Ingredients
Brownies:
12 Tbs (6 oz.) unsalted butter, cut into ½-inch pieces; more softened for the pan
4 ounces unsweetened chocolate, coarsely chopped
4 large eggs
1¾ cups granulated sugar
1½ tsp pure vanilla extract
¼ tsp table salt
¾ cup unbleached all-purpose flour
¼ cup natural cocoa powder
1½ cups pecans, coarsely chopped
Topping:
1 cup granulated sugar
¼ tsp fresh lemon juice
¼ cup cold water
½ cup heavy whipping cream
3 Tbs unsalted butter, cut into 3 pieces
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
¼ tsp table salt
Garnish:
2 ounces bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
1 Tbs heavy whipping cream
½ cup pecans, toasted and chopped

Directions
Make the brownies: Position a rack in the center of the oven and preheat oven to 350°F. Butter bottom and sides of a 9x13-inch baking pan. Put butter and chocolate in a medium heavy-duty saucepan over low heat and stir constantly until melted and smooth. Remove from heat and set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk eggs until well blended. Gradually whisk in sugar and then whisk vigorously until well blended. Whisk in melted chocolate mixture, vanilla extract, and salt. Whisk in flour and cocoa powder until blended. Stir in pecans and then scrape batter into prepared pan, smoothing it into an even layer with a spatula. Bake until a toothpick inserted in center of the brownies comes out with a few moist crumbs attached, 20 to 22 minutes. Transfer the pan to a wire rack and, if necessary, gently press down any puffed areas with a spatula to make the top level. Let cool about 5 minutes. Make the topping: While the brownies are baking, make the caramel. Fill a cup measure halfway with water and put a pastry brush in it; this will be used for washing down the sides of the pan to prevent crystallization. In a heavy duty 2-quart saucepan, stir the sugar, lemon juice, and ¼ cup cold water. Brush down the sides of the pan with water to wash away any sugar crystals. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and cook, occasionally brushing down the sides of the pan, until the mixture starts to color around the edges, 5 to 8 minutes. Gently swirl the pan once to even out the color and prevent the sugar from burning in isolated spots. Continue to cook until the sugar turns medium amber, about 30 seconds more. (Once the mixture begins to color, it will darken very quickly, so keep an eye on it!) Remove the pan from heat and carefully add the cream- the mixture will bubble up furiously. Once the bubbling has subsided, add the butter and gently whisk until completely melted. Whisk in the vanilla extract and salt. Pour the caramel topping over the brownies (it won't be thick). Roll the pan around (or use a spatula) to spread the caramel evenly over the entire top. Let the brownies cool on the rack for 45 minutes and then refrigerate until the caramel topping has set (at least an hour and longer, if possible). The caramel will most likely sink into the brownies quite a bit, leaving a thin layer on top of the brownies. Garnish the brownies: Combine the chocolate and heavy cream in a small saucepan over low heat and stir constantly until melted and smooth. Pour chocolate into a small piping bag fitted with a 1/8-inch plain tip. (Or put in a small zip-top bag and seal the bag. Using scissors, snip off a corner of the bag to make a small hole.) Drizzle the chocolate over the brownies in a zigzag pattern. Sprinkle the chopped pecans over the top. Refrigerate until the chocolate is set, about 30 minutes. Cut the brownies into 36 rectangles. Serve chilled or at room temperature. (Well- covered brownies will keep at room temperature for up to 2 days and in the refrigerator for up to 5 days) . If your kitchen is warm, it's best to keep them chilled.

Makes about 36 brownies.

Directions
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line 9x13-inch pan with foil and lightly spray with cooking spray. Prepare caramel: Mix caramel ingredients in a 2-quart saucepan. Heat over medium, stirring constantly, until it reaches soft-ball stage (230-234 degrees). Remove from heat. In a medium bowl, beat the brown sugar and the next 4 ingredients (through baking soda) until thoroughly combined. Mix in the flour, ground pecans and oats until crumbly. scoop out 1 cup and set aside. Place the remaining crumbs into your prepared pan and press down firmly to coat the bottom. Toss apples in a large bowl with the salt and cinnamon. Arrange them over the crust. Drizzle 1 cup of warm caramel over the top and the sprinkle with the remaining crumbs you set aside.

There's this small town charm you instantly see when you step foot in the small Central California coastal town of Carmel-by-the-Sea. From the volunteer fire station in the city's bustling and quaint downtown shopping district to the scores of boutique shops and art galleries, Carmel-by-the-Sea is what can be described as the perfect weekend getaway spot for anyone who's eager to (at least temporarily) escape big city life.

Who can resist not coming to Carmel-by-the-Sea? Famed actor and director Clint Eastwood loved this place so much that he became mayor of it for a couple years from 1988 to 1990. Maybe it was the abundant art galleries that lined downtown streets that kept artists and cultural omnivores coming back for more. Or was it the eclectic restaurants serving up cuisine from every part of the globe. Many of them use locally grown vegetables from Monterey County in their dishes, so you know the greens are fresh when you order them.

Perhaps what clinched it was the calm sights of the Pacific Ocean from the city's beaches and coastside. Sunsets are magnificent here paired up with a bottle of wine, fruit and cheese purchased from the many fine food retailers in town. Picnics on a Carmel beach are just as memorable.

Carmel-by-the-Sea is comfortably tucked away on the southern tip of Monterey Bay on California's Central Coast. It shares borders with the posh gated community of Peeble Beach to the north. On its southern end, we find the coastal community of Big Sur, where the views of the mighty Pacific Ocean are even more impressive.

Within Carmel-by-the-Sea there are a couple points of interest you must visit:

Stop by Mission Carmel, the "headquarters" of the historic California Mission system that stretches from Northern to Southern California. Fr. Juniperro Serra is buried at Mission Carmel - a place that he always called home even while going up and down Spanish California establishing all the other places of worship. The California Beat's Roy Morlidge has written up a fascinating article on Mission Carmel. Find it here.

Downtown Carmel and the huge (and humorously witty) town map that's painted beside one of the shops. You'll find all the art galleries to your heart's content here. The Carmel-by-the-Sea fire station is staffed by volunteers, and you can get a glimpse inside a working firehouse located downtown!

Other than that, take the time to enjoy the small-town charm that this place delivers. People are amazingly friendly, and if you're from the big city like us, you'll be amazed at just how helpful the locals are here. Life must be good for these folks - why wouldn't it be?

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a classic slice of California located in a setting that just allows you to unwind beside (yes, like the city's name says) the sea.

By Roy Morlidge / Beat Staff Writer

Many people know that there are twenty-one missions in the California mission system. Perhaps the most famous of them all is located in the little town of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Though it is a tourist destination today, Mission Carmel was once the headquarters of one of California’s most well known historical figures and still serves as his final place of rest - Fr. Junipero Serra.

The second of the twenty-one California missions, Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmello was originally founded by Fr. Serra on June 3, 1770 in Monterey. It wasn’t until the next year that it was moved a few miles south to where it is today in Carmel-by-the-Sea. To start your tour of the mission, you must first enter through the souvenir shop. Here you will pay the admission fee of $5 and receive a welcome and informational pamphlet about the mission.

Directly outside, the first thing you will see is a magnificent garden home to flowers of all shapes and colors. Also here is a symbolic statue of Fr. Junipero Serra carrying the cross in one hand and a mission church in the other.

The current church at the mission was completed in 1797. Inside you will find mostly the same items as you would find in any of the missions. However what makes this one stand out are who lie buried near the altar of the church. This is the final resting place of Fr. Junipero Serra himself. Also buried here are Fr. Juan Crespi and Fr. Julian Lopez on his left and Fr. Fermin Francisco de Lausén (2nd President of the California mission system) on his right. Nearby the four graves, you can also find the resting places of Commandante Hermenegildo Sal, of the Presidio of Monterey, and José Antonio Roméu, 5th Governor of Spanish California. Also in the church, you will find a memorial plaque honoring the 1987 visit of Pope John Paul II to Mission Carmel.

Directly outside and to the right of the church is the mission cemetery. Here you can find graves from various times in the mission’s life. Also, there is a large memorial cross honoring all the Native Americans and Spanish buried here.

On the left of the church is a large courtyard. Here you can find several statues, markers, and fountains. Perhaps most interesting of these is the Junipero Serra prayer fountain. On the other side of the courtyard are more buildings of the mission which you won’t be able to see as the mission also serves as home to the Junipero Serra School. Thus if your visiting, try not to make a lot of noise as there may be students in class.

There are three museums here on the mission grounds. Each carry artifacts from various eras of the mission and region’s past. However it is the third museum, and largest, you will visit is the Mora Museum located in the main mission building. Here you will see preserved rooms such as the mission kitchen, dining area, and quarters. Also of note is a sealed room which once was the first library in the state of California. However the most interesting room in the museum is the last one before the souvenir shop. This is the room that Fr. Junipero Serra once occupied and on August 28, 1784, passed away in.

Finally, there is the souvenir shop that you past through when you entered. Here you can purchase a wide variety of religious items and medals.

Mission Carmel is without a doubt the most well known example of place to visit for those wanting to learn about the California mission system. Its architecture, gardens, and most importantly, history make it a great place to stop, visit, and reflect.

The gate through which we entered the 17-Mile Drive was the nearest one to Monterey, and is called the Pacific Grove Gate. The twisty roadway winds through the spectacular Del Monte Forest and poses such scene as to draw out a litany of superlatives. Bounded by the wave-scrubbed Pacific, around each curve is a magnificent scene as land and sea meet in premiere exchange.

They say it is the most photographed tree in the world, and it is considered so precious that it is now guarded by a fence. No longer may casual visitors approach the Cypress tree which for centuries has stood in defiance of storm and raging sea. Understandable, but a bit of disappointment, for Don and Abby on their honeymoon had carved in their initials on the ancient Cypress, and it would have been fun to try to find those marks.

It is golf, though, that commands the area now.

The crown jewel of the golf world, Pebble Beach first shimmered with the completion of the Pebble Beach championship golf course in 1918. The Monterey Peninsula Country Club and Cypress Point Golf Club soon followed. More recently, Pebble Beach Resorts developed The Links at The Inn at Spanish Bay.

We prowled around the grounds, did a bit of window-shopping, then because we were thirsty, and had seen a deli down the way, we walked down to the market, where we drank cokes and ate snacks.

Others were hungry, as well. At one of our stops, from Abby's well-stocked snack bag came chips for the squirrels. Soaring and swooping birds were prevalent, and numerous sea lions lay about.

At a hard lean toward the land, Cypress trees abound, their shapes testimony to fierce prevailing winds. Immense mansions line the highway, their windows and doors strategically perched for splendid view of the sea and its bounty.

It's an ancient, somewhat mysterious land. The brochure handed to us at the gate gives a brief history.

Before the automobile had become a way of life, 17-Mile Drive was navigated by horse-drawn carriages from the famous Hotel Del Monte, now the site of the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey. It was 1881 and excursions through the Del Monte Forest and along its spectacular coastline usually ended up at a picnic spot at Pebble Beach. A couple of landmark dates in the rich history of Pebble Beach are:

-

1602--Spanish explorers discover and map Monterey Peninsula.

-

1880--Hotel Del Monte opens and buys the Del Monte Forest Land.

We finished up the drive, roamed around the streets of Carmel for awhile, then headed back to Monterey. We were hungry and would have dinner there.

This Sterling Shiraz is our choice for this Wednesday evening. We have been so, so busy and have neglected our blog terribly for the first time since we started this. Tonight is the night I get back on track. We actually opened this bottle last night (after finishing a bottle of red wine that was a blend of grenache and shiraz). Tonight, we are finishing this Central Coast wine. It is lovely. This is a big and fruity quaff, with blackberry, cherry, and vanilla attributes. The finish is caramel and oak.

For dinner, I am simply heating up leftovers -- a stew with sausage, chicken, potatoes, green beans, saurkraut and chicken broth. It may not sound good, but it is savory and delicious!

By the way, our son Tony is in Chicago waiting to pick up his Visa so that he can travel to South Korea for his new job. I can't imagine how much I will miss him!

2008 Central Indiana real estate market outperforms other regions of U.S.

August statistics point to areas with improved sales, overall shrinking inventory of homes for sale

INDIANAPOLIS – The Midwest continues to outperform other regions of the country, such as the Northeast and West, beleaguered by real estate challenges. Pending home sales in the Midwest showed a gain of 2.8 percent in July compared to the prior year, according to the latest data from National Association of REALTORS®. The gain is a sharp contrast to other regions of the U.S., which are reporting declines between 7.5 percent and 10.6 percent.

The strongest central Indiana markets are Madison and Shelby counties, both of which reported strong sales in August compared to the same time last year, according to pended sales statistics compiled by F.C. Tucker Company. The number of homes sold in Hendricks County last month was nearly identical to August 2007.

Madison County showed a second month of increased sales, with 132 homes sold for a 10.9 percent increase over the same period last year.

The shrinking housing inventory in the nine-county area is helping sellers by increasing demand, while buyers are enticed by mortgage rates hovering below 6 percent. In August, 18,828 homes were on the market – a nearly 11 percent drop – from 21,127 homes available in August 2007. Madison and Marion counties’ inventory declined more than 15 percent.

The nine-county average sales price was $147,018, which is 5 percent lower compared to the same time last year. However, three counties, Boone, Madison and Shelby, all reported an increased average sales price, up to 5.2 percent higher.

“We are beginning to see more buyers in some areas of central Indiana and we’re hopeful more will follow,” said H. James Litten, president of F.C. Tucker Company’s Residential Real Estate Services Division. “They are showing us what we’ve known all along – Indiana is a great place to live, and now is a great time to buy.”

Yesterday was a great day. We were awoke by the 'Ruggles girls' getting ready for school. I expected it to be much worse. It was actually entertaining. After a quick shower and some breakfast, Brad, Aaron, and I left to tour Westfield/Carmel and the surrounding areas.

Downtown Indianapolis was great! We ate a restaurant called Weber Grill. Great burgers there! (Yes, burgers again). We talked around the mall a bit. Walked to the top of the Monument at the Circle Center, and then took a quick trek out to the new Lucas Oil Stadium.

Once we got back home Brad and Aaron left for a 7 mile bike ride. I stayed home and played guitar and watched the Ruggles Girls try to play. They're not that bad.

Finally, Aaron and I shipped out to find some dinner. We ate at Chilis. Aaron's first time. I think he enjoyed it quite thoroughly. We picked up some ice cream at Kroger and Brad rented Anchorman and we watched that and headed off to bed.

Who knows what exciting things are in store for us today. I am thinking a very smooth relaxing day with our friends...

The morning was clear and warm in the oak forest. Packing took minutes and we were off, traveling do

The morning was clear and warm in the oak forest. Packing took minutes and we were off, traveling down a curvy narrow cliff side road toward the ocean. It was a long drive but we were headed to Morro Bay, where there was a nice coastal climb with a view.

After passing over the highest point in the steep Los Padres range the ocean came into view. It looked different. I squinted my eyes. The Pacific had transformed into a sea of clouds for as far as you could see. The white tops of the puffy blanket reflected the sunshine that warmed the mountain air. It looked like heaven.

[caption id="attachment_418" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="The coast scraped a giant blanket of fog and clouds in the Los Pedros National Forest."][/caption]

After driving for a while and thinking that I spotted a condor at every vulture that flew over head, we broke through the cloud level. The Jeep became submerged into the cold damp coast. I turned the heater on to break the chilly air.

At one point we stopped for coffee and saw a giant German tour bus with little windows on the side for the tourists little sleeping quarters. I had never seen a bus like that. I'd take a Vanagon over it any day.

The drive to San Luis Obispo County seemed like it took forever. We made a brief stop at the Hearst Castle but were unimpressed at the price to see the castle and the tourist trap they called a State Park and Monument. It was a little discouraging because the photos of the castle are gorgeous. The architecture amazing. We hopped back in the car and headed south.

After we reached the Morro Bay state park we used the restrooms and filled up water from a potable spickot. We drove around a few bends and a large estuary with snaking rivers. The turn out to the climbing spot was at our left.

We met a couple people in a gulch that were climbing. They said there were no other top rope anchors.

With disbelief I said " Oh yeah? well I'll check it out anyway."

I climbed up and around to the top of the cliff, leaving Natalie at the bottom of the sandstone. The people below questioned each other as to where I was going to find a top rope and set up. I walked high over a steep ledge with a 70 foot drop on either side. I squinted and peered over toward a wall adjacent to the ledge I was on. There shining in the distance were two anchors just waiting for a rope to be attached.

I scurried over to the ACSA, American Safe Climbing Association, approved bolts and attached my carabiners, slings and rope. The ACSA started as an organization to replace old anchors on climbs throughout America, ensuring safe climbing. The organization also tries to preserve the natural look of the rock where artificial anchors are placed. I threw my harness on and repelled quickly down the ledge with my pack on my back. I ran down the trail and grabbed Natalie from the other climbers.

Natalie tied her figure eight and headed up the wall. At one point she got to a ledge that was just about a foot and a half too tall for her. Natalie went into pure rock climb mode and made the stretch up the steep slope. She grabbed onto a small thin hold and muscled her way up while smearing with her left foot. She had passed the crux and was thrilled. A few moments later and she had topped her first wall. She was happy to be at the top, but even happier to be belayed down to solid ground.

After we climbed for a while I moved the rope over to an overhang and sped up the 5.9 with the foggy estuary at my back. The icy wind blew and I said I had enough and wanted to cruise to Carmel and hit the surf.

The drive seemed fast to Carmel, but I was worried that the setting sun would ruin my plans for a last minute surf.

Cows in big sandy pastures stood stoic across the road from the ocean. Suddenly a few of the cows stood out from the rest. They were white with stripes!

"Zebras!", Natalie yelled.

I pulled the car over and took a few photos of the misplaced animals. It was strange to watch them intertwined with the cattle. They must've been there on a farm, or managed to wander from Africa over the frozen land bridge!

Highway 1 was sunny and beautiful and we made it to Carmel Beach with its white fluffy sand and clear blue waters at around 5PM. I threw my wet suit on and hopped in the water with a few other surfers. I rode for a couple hours while Natalie took photos on the beach. At one point a seal popped his head up and watched me and my ridiculous contraption try and catch waves. He smiled, I smiled back and he dove back into the deep.

Once I had enough of feeling like being in a washing machine with the Carmel rips I packed up the board and we left for Sacramento.

We made a brief stop for food at Save Mart, a stop that would create a mess the following day. But I wouldn't find that out until I reached Vallejo.

The gas gauge beeped after driving into the night and I stopped in Vallejo to fill up. I reached for my wallet and found a hole where my pocket was supposed to be. I flipped.

After searching the car and grumbling for a while, we pulled out Natalie's laptop to search for a wireless signal and a phone number for the Seaside Save Mart.

Luckily a Comfort Inn was right next door. I called the store and sure enough my wallet had fallen out there and was now secured in a safe. I debated on driving back to Monterey, a two hour drive, that night and grabbing the wallet. We made the decision not to, because the store would be closed anyway and left for Sacramento. Thankfully, Natalie lent me some gas money to get back home.

I called my city editor, Andrew, on the way back at around 11 PM and told him what had happened. I made plans for the following day to come into work, do any early assignments and then blast off again for Monterey to get my wallet.

The theme of my photos is....HOW RAD IS PEBBLE BEACH?!

Just another piece of the California experience Fitz and I had during our June trip (a.k.a. engagement whirlwind). Seriously, there are no words to describe how insanely breathtaking the scenery is- photos don't do it justice! You need to take in the whole experience- the smell of the water, the gripping wind swiftly jutting in and out, and the stark contrasts of the sky blues and earthy green colors. It's truly a lovely place.

P.S. We did not actually golf Pebble Beach, just did the 17-mile drive, and had lunch/drinks overlooking the 18th green. It was BLISS. Don't fret- you KNOW I'll golf there eventually. :)

Last night around 7:30 my friend Aaron Foster and I pulled into the driveway of our good friends, Brad and Lisa Ruggles. I could not wait to see them. It has been 5 or 6 months since I saw them last.

We (the guys) were originally going to go camping at Turkey Run State Park, but at the last minute decided to just stay in the Indianapolis area and spend some quality time with our friends.

Last night we ate at Ted's Montana Grill. I don't think I have ever had a burger SO delicious in all my life, and that is saying alot. Thick and juicy and surprising cooked all the way thru, but not burnt. Spending time with friends and engaging in conversation again was a real treat.

Afterwards we walked around Clay Terrance, a shopping center where we ate at and then drove around the area. It was a great way to end the day. Today we plan to go downtown I think and just enjoy the day.

I am hoping spending some time with my friends and the laying on of hands I might be able to stay consistent with my blogging. I truly enjoy it and feel it is important.

School day memories are just not about friends or teachers, it’s also your crushes. Crushes that c

School day memories are just not about friends or teachers, it’s also your crushes. Crushes that crashed. And leave behind a sweet memory for life. It’s a crazy feeling. Scholars, philosophers and even saints have spent years to decode it. Doubtful if they succeeded. So all those high-on-testosterone, confused teens hanging outside Carmel after-dismissal, the puzzle is nothing new!

Misthi (name changed) was my friend’s sister. We met when I was in class nine. You can guess my situation. All my peers had a ‘Gal Friend’ and so I was supposed to get one too! Or else they would say I have strayed. Not that I was really bothered about their opinion. But peer pressure really works!

Lost in her dreams, my imagination would run wild. In a matter of weeks, I was sure that I would spend my whole life with her. I knew where we would live… some where near a river or a mountain. And Bollywood helped me more. Aftab Shivdasani’s debut movie Mast had just been released. The film was about crushes and infatuation. And it also had an angle of ‘running away from home’. So what else was required?! It was a perfect setup. Humming the tunes of the title – un katil nigaho mein, un gaheri adao mein….hua hua hua mein mast... I would stare at the stars from the terrace of our house and plan my elopement with my sweet Misthi! But there was one problem. A small one… which I wish I could solve. I had never spoken to Misthi about my plans. To be honest, I have had never even spoken to her ever about anything. But I ‘loved’ bragging about our ‘affair’ to my friends. What happened next? Nothing. Nancy ma’m told me about the arrival of a new Jeffrey Archer in the library. I was hocked on to it for the next few weeks. Fortunately or unfortunately, Misthi was nowhere there.

Oh… I forgot to tell you I ‘fell in love’ again in Plus two. The connection was again Bollywood. Yash Copra released his mega romantic flick Mohabattein. Boy! It was one hell of an inspiration. I immediately changed my specs frame to the one, worn by Shahrukh aka Raj Aryan. Even the style of wearing the sweater changed. The radar started beeping fast. The search was on. This time it was the daughter of my psychology teacher. Gosh! Just imagine what would his reaction been had he known it then? Well, I think not much would have happened. For I did nothing but let my imagination run wild as the previous time!

Having said all this, I did get a shock few months back. My cousin, who studies in class eleven, had come to Delhi to attend a cultural function on behalf of her school. I knew she had a boy friend but never knew that she had some awesome guts. She landed at my place with her ‘BF’ and happily introduced him to us. I really didn’t know to react. Neither could I suppress my laughter on seeing kids of just 17-19 years posing as a ‘serious couple’, nor could I digest the ‘alliance’. Or was I jealous?

My cousin’s love story seems to taunt my unfulfilled desire to ‘fall in love’ in my teens!
