Finally, at the ripe old age of seventy-five, arguably the most famous chimp of them all has decided to tell his tale (with the help of a ghost-writer- what self-respecting star doesn't employ one, after all?).

Yes indeed the beloved 'Tarzan' star has his us with a book chock full of Hollywood dirt, A- list monkey business (sorry couldn't resist), booze, lechery, drugs- this spoof of the traditional Hollywood memoir has the lot.

Take this quote on Rex Harrison: "an absolutely irredeemable c*** who tried to murder me." Or this enlightening opinion of Charlie Chaplin, "Chaplin is an extraordinarily special human being, a person in whom a multitude of talents and virtues are united, but, as the saying goes, to be human is to be fallible (what a modest species you are!) and not even Charlie's stoutest defenders would claim that he was perfect or even likeable or indeed defensible on any level at all."

Cheeta's obviously not a monkey given to pulling punches, which makes this book all the more entertaining a read. Scandal, scurrilous and malicious gossip, all delivered safe in the knowledge that it'd be pretty hard to sue a 75 year old chimp for libel. I only wish I'd thought of it first.

'Me Cheeta: The Autobiography' is published by Harper Collins imprint Fourth Estate.

In rolul principal, Toma Caragiu.

Griffith, Chaplin a fondat si United Artists in 1919.

Debutul cinematografic si l-a facut in Making a Living, un succes imediat care l-a propulsat imediat in atentia publicului.

The Pawnshop si The Adventurer.

Dupa introducerea sunetului in cinematograf, Charlot a murit, ramanand doar pe peliculele fara sunet.

Ultimul film american semnat de Chaplin, Limelight, a scazut dramatic in incarcatura politica si a capatat conotatii autobiografice. A King in New York (1957), filmul sau european dupa Limelight, a satirizat intreaga persecutie si paranoia politica ce il fortasera sa paraseasca Statele Unite in urma cu cinci ani.

One of my favorite films is Modern Times, a Charlie Chaplin classic. There is a scene where Charlie Chaplin is sitting in front of a machine that holds and rotates a cob of corn. The machine eventually malfunctions and starts spinning at a rapid rate until it completely breaks. Although completely absurb, I couldn't help but find so many correlations with this scene, the industrial revolution, and the current restaurant community. It is shocking to me that a machine exists that injects potato mixed with other products into a mold to form perfectly shaped french fries. Maybe this is the reason a friend of mine recently told me a story about a woman who complained that her french fries were too small. She tried to explain that they cut their fries fresh and used the entire potato, but the woman would have none of it. I am frightened to think that the American public has been exposed to machined and modified things for so long that the sight of naturally prepared fries is an offensive thing. It's like that twilight zone episode where all the doctors have pig noses. There is definitely a growing trend towards naturally grown and prepared food and amidst a dining world where people complain about the size of their fries, but have no problem eating square hamburgers, it is definitely an up hill battle. So to all the pioneers carrying the fire, from the farm to the table, I would like to say thank you, and keep making those fries, they're delicious.

Stunning news from the pulsing heart of global capitalism, the house of cards is in much greater disrepair than we thought. The New York Times reported the most outrageous bailout of the financial sector in history, bar none. Within the last few days the government has taken the following steps to shore up confidence in the basic premise of the current American economy:

They've poured $300 billion dollars into the global credit market.

It lent $180 billion dollars to 'financial markets', according to the article, pretty unspecific to me.

The Federal Reserve injected an addition $100 Billion dollars into Asian and European markets.

However...

"None of those actions, however, brought much catharsis or relief, with banks around the world remaining too frightened to lend to each other, much less to their customers. This forced Mr. Paulson and Ben S. Bernanke, the Fed chairman, to think the unthinkable: committing taxpayer money to buy hundreds of billions of dollars in distressed assets from struggling institutions."(NY Times, Sept. 18th)

Then, realizing that the very pillars of our eco-cidal, predatory version of global trade and corporatism shake around us, our leaders in the midst of raising millions of dollars for and from these institutions leap into action.

“'The Federal Reserve and the Treasury are realizing that we need a more comprehensive solution,” Mr. Schumer said. “I’ve been talking to them about it.”

Still, the evening discussions took most of Washington by surprise, especially since Congress had been trying to finish up its business and head home to campaign for re-election." ....

..."The scale and complexity of the project are almost certain to create huge philosophical differences among the parties, which could make negotiations difficult to say the least."

How many opportunities will we have to retool our economy in a way that provides an economy based on a higher virtue than greed and self perpetuation? Our way of living is dooming our ecosphere, our home, the only one we have. Our way of relating, as nation-states, as races of men and women, as families, as those humble before gods, are contributing to the extinction of modern civilization based on bounty and technology. Let us not turn away from perhaps the most historic moment of our lives, our opportunity to change this flawed paradigm and morph our economy into a tool that serves us, rather than destroys us. Don't sell away your future. We must fight for this goal however we can, with ideas, with actions, with aid, with compassion. Although I repeat myself, take it away Charlie...

what can you do? what can i do?

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Listen, I think he's sexy"][/caption]

Okay, okay, I know what you're thinking, "The man is 20-something years older than you!" or, the ever more popular, "What, really?"

But, I have to confess, especially over the past few days, while I've been developing my new famous-person-who-is-totally-out-of-reach obsession (a post previously filled by men like Charlie Chaplin, Simon Pegg, and the 26-year-old version of Sir Paul McCartney), I would love to skip the romantic dinner, and just get a room with Jon Stewart (in a fictional world where he's not happily married with children).

He doesn't have to do the song and dance. I'm won.

My reasoning is as follows:

5.) I like the funny ones.

We'll start with the obvious here. I wish I could invite you to take a look at the List-I'll-Write-One-Day of all of the famous men I've gone gaga for in the past.

But ... since I haven't written it yet, I'll tell you - most of them are comedians, because face it, ladies like the funny. It shows an air of confidence and intelligence to be able to handle your IQ and self awareness without the snooty smugness that seems to fit so well around the scrawny necks of the upper-sector of smart guys in my generation.

Not to dismiss potty humor, which can be masterfully executed by even those who think "a lot" is one word, but it's the clever stuff that makes me feel all tingly.

4.) The funny ones with a serious side are even better -

When I saw Liberty at The Globe, with Jane, we were discussing the character who was meant to be the play's clown, always making a joke and attempting to lighten the desolate situations that the characters were finding themselves in. It was easy to assume that he had no grip on the brevity of the situations, but it became clear as the story progressed that he was the most intelligent and best informed of them all. This is just so damn sexy.

When it comes down to the point of absolute necessity for the entertainer to drop the façade of humor to make sure we understand something (like Stewart's "You're hurting America" appearance on Crossfire - also known as that time he called a man a Dick on national television), somehow that's just irresistibly appealing to me.

I mean, tell me I'm missing the point, but suddenly it creates this fantasy of getting the guy to drop the façade because of ... you.

This is done really well in Scrubs, in an episode where Elliot (the hot blonde, but slightly dorky friend), for some reason, has to stay the night at Zach Braff's usually very goofy character's house. She's brushing her hair in his bathroom, and he just loses his composure, steps into the bathroom, and basically seduces the hell out of her, without asking permission.

Damn.

The challenge of finding Mr. Serious turns Mr. Funny into Mr. Sexypants.

3.) The man has a passion -

The biggest issue I have with the guys in my generation is their inability to care about (or talk about) really anything but themselves.

They might have a job they kinda dig, or a television show they can quote the entirety of, but they don't actually care about ... anything. I suppose this goes for most of the females in my generation too.

I used to watch movies about college, and see these guys who were too busy to go get drunk, because they'd just discovered something groundbreaking about their science project, and it was really engrossing them. Or, they'd just broken a big story for a publication they were working for. Or, best of all, they get into a heated political debate. Yeah, um, can we say the guy who both has these passions and gets invited out to drink - total myth? Can we say that? Okay.

I lust after Jon Stewart because he seems to be both this myth, and the myth that is #2.

2.) He acts on his beliefs -

I look up to the man. He doesn't just spout his opinion, he confronts the people he has the opinion about. This is appealing to me.

1.) He's just so damn cute -

Okay, so, I know that I'm really in the minority here for liking the short ones (and oh ... oh, do I ...) and my "Asthma is Sexy" tee shirt is often the subject of befuddled head shaking, since people don't understand that I am both sexy and asthmatic. But really ... really ...

[vodpod id=Groupvideo.1571358&w=425&h=350&fv=videoId%3D178675]

more about "Intro - Asthmatic Jon | The Daily Sho...", posted with vodpod

And, to be fair. I found the guy attractive even before I knew he was short and asthmatic, so there. I even thought to myself, hmm, this one's a bit taller than my usual go-to's.

So what do we have here? Yet another small speck of dust added to the blogosphere which observes, ruminates and expounds upon the all-around delight and absurdity of our modern-day life.

Just what the world needs.

The title of the blog comes, of course, from the Charlie Chaplin masterpiece Modern Times,in which he struggles comedically with with coping in the modern world. I can relate--I think most of us can. Life can be many things--crazy, hectic, stressful, difficult, and complex--and it's only our sense of humor and hope that gets us thru to see another day. We're all the Little Tramp, just trying to do the best with can with whatever comes our way. It's not always what we expect or planned for, but we have to deal with with it anyway.

As Jimmy Buffet sings, "some of it's magic, some it's tragic, but I had a good life all the way." That's pretty much sums up the way I see it.

So if a speck of fiberoptic dust can have a purpose, I hope the reader finds some amusement, entertainment and maybe even a semblence of order out of the chaos that comprises our Modern Tymz.

Thanks for reading.

If someone were to come over to your dorm room and excitedly blurt, “We’re watching silent films tonight! Wanna come?” chances are, you probably wouldn’t leap off your chair to go join them. After all the special effects and surround sound we experience today, we just don’t think anything made that long ago would hold any value. Which is where we would be wrong. I’ve always loved old silent films, but it’s been awhile since I’ve seen any, and watching even the montage at DMA the other day was refreshing to me. There’s something very basic and pure about silent film. I think it’s because filmmakers at the time (such as Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton) didn’t rely on explosions and other crowd pleasers to enrapture their audience. Instead, they astound us with the simplicity of humor. The uncomplicated, believably unbelievable plots and predicaments allow us to laugh at not only the characters, but also ourselves. By poking fun at human nature and foolishness, Chaplin and Keaton show us true genius—laughter-evoking fun, while somehow incorporating truth. It may all be subconscious, but each one of us can connect with the endearing Chaplin, or find delight in Keaton’s inventive way of looking at our every day lives. And, of course, there's the fact that they do all of this with minimal dialogue, and we still know exactly what's going on. That is amazing storytelling. We can learn a lot from these “old fashioned” filmmakers, and would do well to study them.

I'm a big fan of Charlie Chaplin and I've done a lot of research on him. Since he didn't do the gutsy stunts like Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd did, it's easy to look at his shorts, especially his early ones, and just see sequences of slapstick with no real point except to make the audience laugh for fifteen minutes. Many of them are that way. But as the years progressed and Chaplin learned his craft, he became much more of an artist than a mere comedian.

I think what sets Chaplin apart from the other silent film comedians is that he loved his medium, much like filmmaker behind those shorts we watched in class the first week, playing around with camera and editing tricks. Starting around 1916 up until his final film in 1967, Charlie Chaplin wrote, directed, and starred in almost every movie he ever made. In the earlier days, he had to edit them too, and from time to time he had a hand in writing the film score to top it all off. If it were possible, Chaplin would have been cast and crew all by himself.

Chaplin got inside of his films--the characters, the story, the actions--so that he could be sure everything was logical and resonated with the audience. His earliest films were basically strings of gags, but as his skill developed, he had a better balance of comedy and tragedy. It's like what we've been talking about, how in grotesque works, for instance, you can either laugh or weep at them, and either reaction would be appropriate. Chaplin wasn't quite grotesque, but he certainly made the audience laugh and cry with his films. Yet in spite of the great sadness his movies contained, he will always be regarded as a comedian.

I suppose one of the great things about living in the vicinity of a major city such as Los Angeles,

I suppose one of the great things about living in the vicinity of a major city such as Los Angeles, is that there are always things going on. More specifically, there is always something going on pertaining to the MOVIES (which makes sense as Hollywood is the movie capital of the planet). In Tinsel Town we are lucky enough to have people around who still care immensely about the preservation of older films--not just physically but putting out a great effort to make sure these films and the people who starred in them are not forgotten by new generations; screening them in old picture palaces, restoring them in new formats such as DVD and Blue Ray, exhibiting these long forgotten artifacts for new people to see.

I remember a few years ago when Turner Classic Movies put on an exhibit at the Grove in Los Angeles. I don't remember what the exhibit was called, but they had a lot of vintage film memorabilia on display--an original shooting script from The Wizard of Oz, one of Clark Gable's old costumes (he had shoulders like a linebacker!), a dress of Elizabeth Taylor's, etc.

Now in Santa Barbara, the Museum of Art has on display a large chunk of the Kobal Foundation photographs. John Kobal, one of the world's leading photograph archivists and film historians (he's dead now, sadly, but his collection and legacy of restoration certainly lives on), amassed one of the largest studio photograph collections in the world.

Most of the photographs in "Made in Hollywood" are vintage silver gelatin prints, rich in their tonality and velvety in their blacks. There are also eight 16-by-20-inch new platinum prints and several giant wall murals made for the show from original 8-by-10 negatives.

The survey's chronological range covers Kobal's own interests, beginning with the rise of the studio system. As the studios worked to perfect their star machinery, still photographs were regularly used for advertising and sent out to magazines and newspapers. Individual pictures were also mailed by the thousands to fans.

Some of the famous faces you'll see at the exhibit include Greta Garbo, Orson Welles, Humphrey Bogart, etc.

"There are also some surprises. A close-up of Vivien Leigh, a publicity shot by Fred Parrish for "Gone With the Wind," depicts her disheveled and looking half-mad. Her face is lighted from the left, with the other side in darkness -- a moment excerpted from the famous "As God is my witness" scene when Scarlett O'Hara is reduced to digging in a field for sustenance. Farther along the wall, in stark contrast, is Leigh in a more familiar pose -- as the beautifully coiffed and controlled Southern belle, captured by Laszlo Willinger."

The exhibit is on display until October 5 so if you live in the greater LA area, it's probably definitely worth the drive up the coast!

More info at the LA TIMES

I also can't wait for the Vanity Fair Portraits exhibit coming soon!!

Nasce così JazzMuto/HUMAN RIGHTS SILENT MOVIES IN CONCERT!

Bal Blog dello zio Beppe:

Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped

[dailymotion id=k3xtkjeAVj3NwK2clt]

Greed has poisoned men's souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical, our cleverness hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost...

To those who can hear me I say, 'Do not despair'. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass and dictators die; and the power they took from the people will return to the people and so long as men die, liberty will never perish...

Soldiers: Don't fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the seventeenth chapter of Saint Luke it is written, 'the kingdom of God is within man'—not one man, nor a group of men, but in all men, in you, you the people have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness. You the people have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.

Then, in the name of democracy, let us use that power! Let us all unite! Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give you the future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power, but they lie! They do not fulfill their promise; they never will. Dictators free themselves, but they enslave the people! Now, let us fight to fulfill that promise! Let us fight to free the world, to do away with national barriers, to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness.

Soldiers: In the name of democracy, let us all unite!
