But we are proud of what we finally selected! The winning entry came from Mrinal Kanti of Fidelity Investments and what tilted the scales in his favor was the originality of expression, structure of presentation and of course, ingenuity of thoughts. Here's an excerpt from the winning essay:
"Here’s how the new age concept of Social Entrepreneurship (SE) looks like- Teach a man how to fish, and in turn ask him to catch two and teach one new guy each day. You get to sell only one, so profits are lower than they could have been, but you also get to alleviate hunger. Sounds fishy, you would say? Agreed, but the message here is that social entrepreneurship has to meet two kinds of bottom lines- profit as well as achievement of the underlying social cause, and not necessarily in that order."

TC-I is rife with examples of how social enterprises work in action, and this week's announcement from the Members Project American Express competition includes yet another success story from India. The Akshaya Patra Foundation was a finalist in the competition, receiving $100,000 towards its goal of feeding 1 million children daily.

The impact of the foundation is described:

For less than $30 a year, a child in India can receive a school lunch for the 220-day whole year. These programs have resulted in greater attendance, reduced drop out and truancy rates, and better cognitive development for children – often by 10-20%. It will also shield many children from the impact of these tough economic times and the rising cost of food around the world.

WIth organizations like this, large-scale solutions to lessen poverty are becoming more and more successful. TC-I encourages its readers to get involved with the issues surrounding poverty, both through Blog Action Day and in countless other ways.

Now several hours later, something hasj ust dawned on me whether I like other peoples art or not doesn't matter, what matters is what art is all about.

It's simple:

Art (in whatever form) gives the viewer the permission to stand an stare at it. Doesn't matter whether you like it or not. In this world how often do we get that opportunity to do that - just stare? We are so busy or so fed up or looking at the ground instead of all around us (where true beauty is every day) we are scolded by our parents at an early age - "Don't stare at the gentleman!" - yet at that age we are prepared to stare, we need to stare to soak everything up, to learn, to build our knowledge but soon we learn its' not polite and so we stop and the words of our elders stay with us for life "Don't stare"

Well, I'm here to tell you that it's ok, I actually want people to stare at my work, not give it a glance and turn away. Look, wait, soak it up SEE what is there, see what isn't there - give it time (not 5 minutes on the clock) but your precious time, time out, space, nothing - just look - you never know you might see! - just like when you were a child and pushed your nose up against the cake shop window to see the colours, textures and shapes to see how good it all was!

So here's to all us artists, we are all in our own way, our own style or genre, giving people the precious comodity of time - and that's not easy in this day and age!

En 2006, le CSB Neufchatel remportait la coupe. En 2007, Quincampoix  gagne, le CSB Neufchatel terminait 3^e. .Nous espérons conserver notre titre.

Cette saison Aumale, Grugny, Neufchatel et Quincampoix souhaitons aligner plusieurs équipes à cette manifestation très conviviale.

A la suite de cette compétition, pour ceux qui le souhaitent   il  y a la Coupe de Seine-maritime  Ne waza (combat au sol)  Pesée : 16h-16h30. C’est une animation très sympathique également.

Gamefishing classes are still available for those interested learning all about game fishing, discuss rules and regulations, along with tips, techniques and knots. Open to any interested junior or adult, these sessions can be arranged by calling Peter on 8987 8333.

Both the Walkabout Lodge John Jones Memorial Billfish Challenge and the XXXX Gold Gove Game Classic have attracted good angler registrations. Avoid disappointment and register early. Entry forms available from Travelworld.

And what with these winds ? Keen anglers are still making the most of early morning sessions. Several Billfish were raised on Saturday morning prior to lunch off Bonner Rocks, but no tags were deployed. However, they are about. A small black Marlin kept the Perkins boys amused last Thursday afternoon chasing bait normally rounded up by the bay dolphins between the wharf and rock island opposite the Perkins facilities. Take care with the breezes and water conditions this weekend with the season still not convinced to have seen the last of the south easterly winds.

On October 4, 2008 Iron Brides Productions LLC held the first of a number of open casting call auditions. The first was at the Holiday Inn Nashua. We had two video cameras and two still cameras working almost full time for most of the day. Lots of pleasant surprises. Executive Producer George Jobel developed and organized a series of improv scripts to bring out the character of some of our host audition applicants and some of our brides. The improv skits were just to evaluate the hosts primarily and to observe their versatility. Needless to say the day was fun and it loosened up folks. We had great comments from the prospective brides and hosts. Even the newspapers picked up on the audition event and stories ran in the Manchester Union Leader, Fosters Daily Democrat, Seacoast Online, Concord Monitor and the Hippo. The Boston Herald subsequently interviewed George Jobel and has indicated it will be running a story on Iron Brides stay tuned. The Wrexham Open is an annual exhibition held at Oriel Wrecsam and is open to all artists whether professional, amateur or students. ALl art forms can be accepted, including sculpture and photography.

This looks really interesting, I have often thought of entering my local open art exhibition with something other than traditional artwork. I had a large (7' by 2') painting displayed at the Williamson Art Gallery in Oxton about 6 years ago but as exciting as it was to have something hanging and on display it really didn't reflect what I wanted to create. The small shell book that I made is not really like the other books in that it is more of a piece of art or even sculpture rather than a book to write or draw in. I have been collecting large shells from the UK and Greece and would love to make something special to enter into the exhibition.

Receiving days are 21/11 10am-6.30pm and 22/11 10am-3.30pm

The dates of the exhibition is from 6th December to 10th January.

All items must have a value for insurance purposes and could be sold. Not sure how I feel about this but I will have to just do it if I want to enter.  How do you put a value on something? A hurdle to get over. Perhaps speak to someone from the fine art department or check out other items similar available on the web.

Her brother, said she died on the 15th August! He had deleted the blog that she owned, everybody thought that she had really died! I am really upset! I had held a party. 

Monoro you are really cruel, nobody will ever speak to you again! I am sure that your sister doesn't trust you! It is very horrible to say someone's dead when they aren't! 

I have now closed the site for some re-furbishment, it should be back soon.

One of the films was called The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and it gave Mr Monkey a great idea. Why not start a League of Extraordinary Perverts, there are enough of them on the local political scene in South Tyneside.

Mr Monkey is busy researching possible members and will be posting on this subject again very soon.

The source of these ads is World Challenge, an annual competition supported by Shell, BBC, and Newsweek that "honors inventive local solutions to our planet's most difficult problems." The winner will receive a grant of $20,000, and two runners-up will each receive $10,000--all for the future of their projects.

The World Challenge Website shows the 12 finalists from India (2 entries), South Africa, Colombia, Nepal, Pakistan, Kenya (3 entries), Brazil, Paraguay, and Kyrgyztan, and it allows anyone from anywhere in the world to vote for their favorite project. I'm still trying to decide which project will get my vote--because they're all equally worthy of that mouse click!--but maybe if you vote too, then I won't have to feel guilty about choosing one over the others.

Please spread the word and make a difference for people from other parts of the globe! Voting closes on 21 November 2008.

5. All cocktails should contain no other competitor rum brand.

These aren't at all surprising - after all, the competition is to provide a drink for the Bacardi Legacy book. There's also a number of rules relating to the format of the comp and things like the copyright of the drink (any entered drinks essentially become part of Bacardi's IP, with accreditation "wherever possible") which are pretty standard too. There are two rules that stand out; they're the ones which are going make my life a lot harder.

7. All cocktails should use commonly available ingredients.

This isn't unexpected but it is annoying, mainly because there's no guidance given on what constitutes "commonly available". I always take it to mean if a bar can't get an ingredient from a supplier, they should be able to get it from a shop, which means no interesting fruits that are only available in one store, in one town.

8. Cocktails with house specific ingredients will not be eligible unless these are easily made and a full recipe is included.

Well, that's helpful. The phrase "easily made" is so ambiguous as to be entirely useless. One of the cocktails (Ben Carlotto's The Lady Wears Red) in the first edition of the Legacy book contains homemade bitters, so that would seem to set the benchmark.

Right now, I'm wondering if my homemade Grapefrucello is eligible, but I suspect it won't be. So, next step? I'm going shopping.

Plan A Students prepare 3-4 memorized pieces by different composers from different style periods.  Plan A is only available for students in grades 4-12.  This is the "national track" plan; competition begins at the state level and proceeds up through regional, division, and national levels of competition.  Only the winner of each level moves on.

Plan B Students prepare 3 memorized pieces by different composers from different style periods.  Students in grades 1-6 may prepare pieces by "method" composers (such as Dennis Alexander, Randall and Nancy Faber, etc.), but all pieces should be original piano compositions and not simplified arrangements of other works.  Students in grades 7-12 should prepare only pieces by classical composers.  Competition begins at the district level.  Each student receiving a "1" rating at district auditions qualifies for state competition.  At the state level, Plan B is a head-to-head competition with a winner, a runner-up, and honorable mentions awarded.  Those students who perform well at state receive a "1" rating, and the best performances are awarded as winners.  Students in Plan B do not advance beyond the state level.

Plan C Plan C is identical to Plan B except that students are only required to perform two memorized pieces.

Plan D Students in Plan D perform two pieces "for comments only."  They participate only at the district level and are not required to memorize their music.  This plan is ideal for those students who are not ready for competition but would like the opportunity to perform and receive a written judge's critique.

The winner is awarded a booth in the New Designer Gallery at the July Jewelers of America Show in New York City. The winner is the focus of extensive media attention. This high-profile competition has successfully launched the careers of past winners such as Zoltan David, Todd Reed, Sarah Graham and Brian Sholdt. The entire jewelry industry eagerly awaits the New York debut of the AJDC's pick. In addition, the winner receives professional support from members of the AJDC on making the step to larger markets. 

The American Jewelry Design Council is a group of over thirty nationally prominent designers whose mission is to promote the art of jewelry. In coordination with the Jewelers of America, this contest has been a major annual success, each year presenting a single outstanding designer to national and international jewelry buyers. 

Applicants must be a designer/owner of a jewelry manufacturing business, produce in the United States and have never exhibited at a JA Show. Selection is based on originality, craftsmanship, innovation, marketability and cohesiveness. The names of all finalists are submitted to the JA selection committee for consideration as a candidate for the New Designer Gallery. Winner and finalists are honored at an awards ceremony during the show.

To further these ideas, for the last three years we have  set a competition for Year Eight students in our local schools to run in conjunction with  their Citizenship studies.

Subjects so far have been:-

*  "Write an essay on how you would like to see Newcastle Town Centre develop over the next ten years”.

* “Design an Eco-garden in your school grounds, to include a survey as it is now, a plan of the  proposed garden and a breakdown of the costs involved.”

* “Produce a scrapbook depicting various aspects of your school.”

We have been delighted in the interest shown by many schools and the enthusiasm and  originality shown by the students.

This year, for the first time, we have set a separate competition for pupils at the Special Schools in the area.  We look forward to examining their entries in due course.

So far, prizes have been awarded to Sir Thomas Boughey School, Wolstanton High School, St. John Fisher School and Maryhill High School.
 
The subject set for the 2009 competition will be to devise a project in which the school can become involved with the local community, to their mutual benefit.

We hope that all those schools who have entered before will again compete. We would be particularly pleased to receive entries from any local schools who have not previously participated.

Max Log - I opened with 290, strict pressed 310, and nailed 330 with more in the tank - 2nd Place

Deadlift Medley - I really enjoyed this event.  Being down in the points I wanted this event bad, and I nailed it perfect - 1st Place

Yoke - This is a great event for me, my only regret is that I set the cross bar too high and didn't have enough clearance from the ground - 2nd Place

Farmers - I get more nervous for farmers then I do for any other event.  Alot of guys were finishing with good times.  I made my turn and started going sideways, but I decided to finish that way rather than wait for them to straighten out - 2nd Place

Stone Load for Reps - At this point I was in first by 2 points and I knew I need to at least tie Chris Canada to get the win.  The good thing is that I was up last, he went right before me and got 6 reps.  I had only got 5 in training but I wanted to win this thing badly.  The reps came a lot easier than they did at Jobes!  I got my 6th rep and then 7 to tie for first place, I knew that was all I needed to win the contest.
