In addition to tours of the just completed chicken coop and plenty of time for everyone to pet and play with the chicks, we served up a buffet of summer patio fare: in addition to the obligatory brats and whole grain rolls, we had salad of watermelon, feta cheese and red onions, grilled tricolor bell peppers, zucchini and yellow squash, grilled polenta cakes, orange cream cheese frosted brownies, a white balsamic custard tart with fresh fruit that went over very well indeed, and cream cheese with fresh chives and garlic from the garden stirred in. The most popular item of the evening, though, appeared to be the chard and onion quiche (I'd made two in the hopes that we'd have generous leftovers to enjoy this week - both were polished off in their entirety, so we will have to cook again tonight - too bad).

1 pie crust

large bunch chard, stems trimmed off and chopped separately, leaves roughly chopped

red onions, sliced - I used several small ones, but I'd say 1-2 large ones would work

grated Pecorino-Romano cheese (again guesstimating, I grated about a saucer full)

3 eggs, lightly beaten

1 cup milk (I used 1%)

1 cup cream (I used table cream that was left over in the fridge)

 a few toasted pine nuts

salt, fresh ground pepper, dash nutmeg and dash cayenne pepper

Directions:

preheat oven to 400 degrees

Saute chard stems in olive oil until softened; set aside

Saute chard leaves in olive oil, seasoning occasionally with salt and pepper, until wilted and tender; set aside

put onion slices in pan with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and a generous dash of sugar; over medium heat let them cook until well softened and beginning to caramelize; try not to stir much to allow the caramelization to begin to take effect

line a pie plate with pie crust and fold over edges

fill bottom of pie with onions

layer chard stems and leaves on top of onions

sprinkle most of the grated cheese over the chard

mix together cream, milk, eggs and season with salt, pepper, cayenne and nutmeg

pour egg mixture into pie crust

top with remaining cheese and sprinkle with pine nuts

bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes

lower heat to 325 and bake for 35 more minutes, until golden brown and slightly crusty

let sit for a while before serving - at least 30 minutes, but quiche will taste fabulous hours later or the next day

I was paid the highest compliment on this quiche when a native French woman had some and pronounced it truly excellent; she commented on people's tendency to overbake theirs until the eggs turned runny, and on the excellent flavor of the vegetables. You might as well just call it "garden quiche," because it could just as well have had any other combination of greens and veggies in it; this is just what was ready for the taking yesterday. I can see by my fast-growing vines that we will soon have the opportunity to try cherry tomato and zucchini quiche, for example. Any good cheese and any tasty combination of vegggies, sausage or other kinds of meat would surely be just as wonderful. Let your imagination run on this one - as long as you have the basic base down, you can't mess up a quiche!

Det betyder att jag, vid första bästa lucka, måste springa upp och skjuta in alla vagnar i varandra för att andra människor dels ska komma fram och dels för att oreda skapar mer oreda (de flesta i det här skedet av handlingen är fullt fokuserade på att komma ut och hem att de gör som alla andra gör och har gjort).

De som gör så här med vagnarna måste vara:
1. Lata
2. Oempatiska
3. Ouppfostrade
4. Stressade
5. Förvirrade
6. Alla ovanstående

Varför inte bara ge vagnjäveln en extra liten push, jag förstår verkligen inte. Loggar de här människorna nästan ut när de har betalat sina räkningar via internetbank, tappar de nästan ut diskvattnet, låser de nästan dörren när de går hemifrån?

There wasn't as much wildlife in Tahuya, but we managed to spot a mother black bear and her cub about 45 yards from us one evening. I also did a stupid thing with nature, while throwing rocks at a squirrel I missed the squirrel and got a bees' nest. And we know the end of that story, but I only got stung once. As for biking well I went over the handlebars twice in one day which probably added up to about 8 bike falls in the two weeks there, so not bad for me. Most importantly I never had to go to the hospital, if you really know me that will leave you shocked.

I won't say we didn't have any setbacks, we endured my companion breaking her bike on the second day and it took us until the fourth day to get it fixed. But all in all it wasn't like two flat tires and pouring down rain, but it was still something to overcome and still find a way to stay on schedule. We both learned that scheduling ahead of time is not always going to lead to a easy job. Its like baseball, pitchers and batters are always adjusting to keep up with the competition. Fail to adjust, and well you get demoted to AAA or get traded. I still tell people climbing Mt Rainier was easier than biking Capitol State Forest.

Right now we're in the process of reviewing our data and using ArcGIS software to edit some of our data to we can present it to our client this week. Essentially, we're preparing an overview of what the client will get from us in our final report. Meeting with the client at this phase is beneficial in many ways. They can offer suggestions now that can be changed easily, it allows them to know our progress in each forest, and helps keep both sides completely in the loop.

Kvällarna här har varit, är jobbiga, hur ska man få ihop det? Tiden räcker ju inte till! Albin är ju så himla trött redan vid halv sex, (kanske pga perioden/tänderna vad vet jag!?)

Vi har börjat med välling för han är för trött när han ska äta sin gröt. Trött och hungrig ingen bra kombination. Men han är inte helt övertygad om att ta vällingen, men det kommer väl.

Oså ska vi hinna äta innan han ska få mat, hur? Eller så får vi äta middag vid 19-tiden och hur kul är det? Inte kul. Nä, det ska gå på nåt sätt.

Men över till nåt annat. Jag fick ett brev på posten idag från Coop´s nya vd. Han ville ha en dialog med alla medarbetare så han kommer att skicka ut brev till alla lite då och då för att man skulle få en uppdatering om vad som händer inom företaget.

Dessutom skrev han om "jättelyftet", en fest till oss till hösten. Tack det låter ju trevligt. Men varför ska han skicka ut ett speciellt brev till alla. Det blir onödigt mycket papper. Tänk på miljön! Det hade väl räckt med ett mail till varje butik istället.

Jaja det är Coop i ett nötskal, hahaha! Kan jag skriva så? Jo, det kunde jag :-)

/ Challe

I'm growing a bit frustrated with the chickens as their current living situation is no longer suitable and their next living quarters will not be occupy-able until next week.

Currently, the four chicks, loud, half-feathered, skittish, are housed in a cage in my front living room. I do not spend much time in this area, so they are not in the way, per se. There is a door to the room to keep the dog out. They are placed under a window to receive natural light (we removed their heating lamp a couple weeks ago) and any breezes that might roll through.

I mentioned before, though, that their messes are increasing in proportion to their size and it is time they were moved outside. We have converted an old rabbit cage that will serve as the chicks' home while they continue to grow. Ultimately, they will move into their rather fancy coop which Stephen built, kitted out with cozy nesting boxes, ornate perches and fancy ladders to get from level to level.

They scratch and peck like crazy, destroying their daily lining of newspaper and taking every bit of their daily allotment of hay and somehow managing to move it to the floor outside the cage. But it's their poop, quite frankly, that's the big bother. Rather, its constant flow. I know it is good for the compost. I know.

But . . . it's time for them to go outside.

This past Tuesday, Lauren, Coop and I met up at Sugarhill for the Tuesday Night Jam. The event is one big jam session backed by a house band, and hosted by the ever so beautiful Joi (you know, Big Gipp's baby mama/wife). In addition to this past Tuesday being the night for Tuesday Night Jam, it was also a BET Awards viewing party, an album listening party for Anthony David's new release which is entitled 'Acey Ducey' (I hope I spelled that correctly...) and an album release party for Hidden Beach Recordings Presents: Unwrapped, Volume 5.0: The Collipark Cafe Sessions.

Needless to say, it was a busy night. We got there a little after 8, and the place was already crowded. It started off pretty slow with 102.5 (which is my favorite radio station) broadcasting live from the spot. It was a pretty chill event. Anthony David came out and performed a couple tracks, and then, some of the guys from Hidden Beach (which included Mike Phillips who KILLED it!) took to the stage, and performed some of the tracks off the CD for us. I'm definitely gonna have to go out and buy all 5 albums because the music was on point.

A little while later, they cut on the B.E.T. Awards. Coop, Lauren & I were chatting it up, laughing and just enjoying the atmosphere. I turned around to see what was happening on the BET Awards, and here's what I noticed:

T-Pain looked like he finally escaped from Wonderland.

All that air humping Chris Brown was doing was COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY. When I say it caught me off guard, it truly did. However, I will say that Ciara could drop it down on me anytime she wishes (Yo Ciara, hit me up on e-mail for my phone number...). Note to Chris Brown: Lauren has an eye on you. You'd better watch yo back bruh. LOL

Everything was going well when the Al Green tribute came on. I was watching the screen when I saw this guy walk onto the stage. Since they showed it from a wide shot, you couldn't really tell who it was, but with me being farsighted as all hell, I said "Hey y'all, that looks like Maxwell...". And sure enough... As soon as it was clear that it was in fact Maxwell, every woman in the place started swooning and fanning themselves. I busted out laughing. Lauren and Coop immediately picked up their phones and started texting whoever and I shot an e-mail to Sixty just to give her a heads up (b/c she's Maxwell's Number 1 Fan), although I had a feeling that she was already watching it.

Around 11, the Jam Session started, and let me say, Joi came on stage and did this funky version of The Eurythmics's 'Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This'. Everything Joi performed was on point. I found myself getting down to the music and just enjoying myself.

During the intermission, Algebra walked in. I bought her album off of iTunes a few months back, but I listened to it for the first time while en route to Atlanta. With the album being as good as it was, I was shocked to see her there (Lauren pointed out that she's at Sugarhill all the time). I was still shocked because back home in Baltimore, you don't see too many celebrities out and about at various nightspots. I had my little 5 seconds of being starstruck and I was ready for her to jump on stage and perform. The DJ put on Afrika Bambaataa's 'Planet Rock' and the whole place started dancing. We ended up having a lil breakdancing battle with the ladies at the table next to us. I had to let 'em know "I might be a big dude, but I can still get down." LOL

Joi came back out (and performed Coop's song 'Lick') and I was minding my own business, just vibin' and enjoying the atmosphere when I heard Lauren and Coop talking about somebody. I was looking around trying to see who they were talking about, and I saw this:

What the Hell!?!?!?!? I shook my head and turned around, and Lauren and Coop just laughed. Looking at that was traumatizing to say the least.  Why the hell would you leave the house looking like that?

As the night went on, some amateurs came on stage and performed with the band. At this point, I was waiting to see Algebra. One after the other, after the other came on stage. The last straw for me was D'Maestro. Dude was trying to hit the same high notes that Joi had been hitting that entire night. Lauren said that he looked like a bigger version of Cee-Lo, to which I replied "You think he'd perform Closet Freak?" I will admit, dude can sing.

After he left the stage another amateur came on, and the three of us made our exit. I wanted to see Algebra perform, but at this point, it was almost 1:30 AM, and the 3 of us had to be at work in a few hours. I definitely had a ball, and I will be back before I leave. Hopefully Algebra will be back the next time. I had fun chillin with Lauren & Coop, and i'm pretty sure that we'll do it again soon.

Het is de tweede tentoonstelling in de reeks 'Cultuur op Onverwachte plekken' (COOP), een initiatief van de bibliotheken van Almelo, Hengelo, Raalte en Olst/Wijhe en KCO uit Zwolle. Deze vroegen landelijk bekende gastconservatoren hun favoriete voorwerpen uit de depots van Overijsselse musea aan het publiek te laten zien. De expositie is vanaf 8 mei tot en met 8 augustus 2008 te bekijken in Bibliotheek Hengelo Beursplein.

Wie nog meer werken van Paul Citroen wil bekijken kan in het najaar van 2008 de unieke overzichtstentoonstelling van het werk van kunstenaar Paul Citroen (1896-1983) bekijken bij De Fundatie. Stukken uit de eigen collectie geven samen met vele bruiklenen een uitgebreid beeld van Citroen’s brede oeuvre.

- Ojdå, jag får gå igenom dem snart, det är bara det att nu så här mitt på dagen måste vi plocka upp varorna, för efter fyra blir det för mycket folk. Vi brukar gå igenom frukt-och gröntdiskarna då, det har ju du och jag pratat om förut.
- Jojo, men jag är här nu, och jag vill inte se en massa rutten frukt när jag kommer in hit.
- Nej, det är klart… jag går på en gång och plockar bort de dåliga.
- Ja, jag vet inte varför jag kommer hit och handlar, jag blir lika arg varje gång jag ser de där ruttna frukterna!
- Nej, inte jag heller.

Jag går till fruktavdelningen och förbereder mig för att fäktas med flugor och mögel, jag har till och med hämtat ett par plasthandskar. I mitt huvud har jag redan lagt upp stridsordningen: nektariner / persikor / plommon / biggaråer / apelsiner / äpplen.

En persika.

Det ligger en ynka persika och gosar sig på en egen mögelkudde, i övrigt är allt glänsande friskt och fräscht.

Jag tänker ut hämndrepliker i nära en timme.

Dei contenuti vi abbiamo già parlato in modo dettagliato nei giorni scorsi; dovrebbero invece emergere alcuni provvedimenti nuovi, stando alle voci che si rincorrono in queste ultime ore. vediamo quali.

Coop e Robin Tax. Della Robin Tax sappiamo tutto, ma per riassumerne lo spirito, l’aliquota Ires salirà dal 27 al 33% per tutte le aziende bancarie, assicurative e petrolifere; inoltre per queste ultime vigerà l’obbligo di mettere a bilancio gli stock a prezzo di mercato e non a prezzo di acquisto (solitamente molto più basso). La novità invece potrebbe essere rappresentata dagli aumenti di tassazione alle Coop, per equipararne in qualche modo il regime fiscale alle aziende concorrenti, con incremento dal 12,5 al 20% di tassa sugli utili e obbligo di destinazione di un ulteriore 5% dei guadagni al Fondo per i più deboli, cioè la famosa carta sociale allo studio per pagare alimentari e bollette.

Innovazione e banda larga. La banda larga e gli impianti wireless vengono equiparati alle opere di urbanizzazione primaria e in quanto tali godranno di facilitazioni burocratiche, come il principio del silenzio-assenso nei rapporti con la pubblica amministrazione, di fronte alla quale sarà sufficiente effettuare una denuncia di inizio attività. Tutto questo per favorire lo sviluppo tecnologico in un settore chiave della comunicazione.

Istituzione tetti di spesa. Le amministrazioni centrali saranno soggette a tetti di spesa che dovrebbero portare un risparmio immediato di 5 miliardi (14 nel triennio), cui aggiungerne altri 20 da pubblico impiego, finanza decentrata, sanità e previdenza. Il risparmio così ottenuto servirà necessariamente anche a contrastare l’aggravio di spesa derivante dall’aumento dei costi previdenziali determinati dal quadro demografico.

Så jag har pillat och pillat. Alltså.. Det är att komma på hur ett smycke ska se ut som är det svåra, inte att sätta ihop det. Här kan ni se vad jag gjort (: Allt går (som det står) att beställa via mail. De som ligger där ska ut på Tradera, antagligen imorn, så håll koll på anan0509 ;)

Näe, nu ska jag sova. Världens huvudvärk! Ska bara uppdatera prislistan först.

Bei "Fishloft" handelt es sich um ein durchsichtiges Plexirohr, das in einen Teich gestellt wird. Die obere Seite wird verschlossen. Dann pumpt man mit einer Vakuumpumpe - z.B. eine Schlauchbootpumpe - die Luft aus dem Plexiglasrohr. Der Wasserpegel steigt und füllt das Rohr bis zur Oberkante. Und nun? Was soll das? Die Fische im Teich können nun in das Rohr schwimmen und aufsteigen! So geniessen die Fische die Aussicht über den Teich ohne zu ersticken! Oder: Die Katzen können sich die nächste Mahlzeit direkt präsentieren lassen :-)

Oben eine Variante mit einem Goldfischglas vom Blog "ParadisExpress". Das Ganze sieht nicht nur genial aus, sondern ist eine ganz einfach umzusetzende geniale Idee. Sofort dachte ich daran, wie ich das nun bei uns zu Hause einsetzen kann. Zum einen im Garten: Dort kommt irgendwann ein Holztrog oder mittig durchgesägtes Barriquefass unter den Regenablauf der Terrasse. Oder in einem der Aquarien: Ja, mittlerweile habe ich drei gebrauchte kleinere Aquarien günstig erstanden. Also notierte ich "Plexiglasrohr suchen" im Hinterkopf.

Nach der Arbeit fuhr ich zum Einkaufen ins "Letzi". Ziel: Im "Jumbo" nach Quarzsand für meine Aquarien zu kaufen. Nur wenige Kaufwillige befanden sich im Einkaufszentrum "um die Ecke". Ich wanderte zum Baumarkt "Jumbo" und schlenderte durch die Regale Richtung Gartenbedarf im Aussenbereich.

In einem Regalgang stolperte ich förmlich über flache "Rollwagerl". Eigentlich heissen die Dinger im Jumbo aber "Möbelhund". Wie im Beitrag "Thairiver" bereits beschrieben, stört mich an den gängigen Aquarieninstallationen, dass die Teile einmal aufgestellt einfach nicht mehr zu bewegen sind. Der "Möbelhund" kam mir also gerade recht; denn die Tragfähigkeit liegt bei 500 kg! Grösse: 60x30 Zentimeter. Kostenpunkt: 37 Franken pro Stück. Ja, ich nahm gleich mal zwei mit, um die "Rollwagerl" gleich zu Hause unter einem der kleineren Aquarien zu testen.

Dann ging ich hinaus in den Aussenbereich, suchte und fand "gewaschenen Quarzsand im Beutel zu 25 kg" (7 CHF), wuchtete einen Sack in den Einkaufswagen und schlenderte zum Abschluss noch durch die Holzabteilung. Dort fand ich Styroporplatten als Unterlage für die Aquarien. Fertig! Dann ging ich zur Kasse und lud die Ware in den Boxster.

Da ich noch Zeit hatte (bis zum Anpfiff der EM-Fussballspiele), wanderte ich zurück ins Einkaufszentrum. Im "Pfister-Einrichtungshop" stehen viele Artikel zum "Ausverkaufspreis". Ich durchsuchte den Laden nach Brauchbarem für die "Waterworld-Projekte". Glasvasen mit verschiedenen Grössen und Formen standen in den Regalen. Ich fand runde Behälter mit schräg abgeschliffenen Öffnungen. Die Preise entsprachen allerdings nicht meinen Vorstellungen. Kurz vor dem Ausgang kam ich dann an der Plexiglas-Deko-Abteilung vorbei. Und fand: Ein einseitig verschlossenes Plexiglasrohr!

Eigentlich handelt es sich dabei um einen "Schirmständer". Aber den Zweck als "Fishloft" konnte es allemal erfüllen. Ich fotografierte den Schirmständer für mein externes Gedächtnis und speicherte den Preis, sowie die Bestellnummer ab.

Dann kaufte ich im Coop noch ein paar Lebensmittel ein und fuhr anschliessend nach Hause. Mike half mir beim Ausladen und ich erzählte ihm von den Fundstücken. Dann testete ich sofort einen der "Möbelhunde" und stellte eines der Aquarien darauf. Die Masse passen ideal - das Aquarium besitzt ebenso die Grundfläche von 60x30 Zentimeter.

Nun lässt sich das momentan nur mit etwas Wasser gefüllte und mit zwei Zyperngraspflanzen bestückte Aquarium ganz leicht bewegen. Gefällt mir das aktuelle "Ensemble" vor dem grossen Süd-/Ostfenster nicht, so wird einfach umgestellt. Links unten steht übrigens "Waterworld I", jedoch mit Garnelen ausgestattet. Auf dem Elefantenhocker tummeln sich rote Neon und das Kampffischmännchen in "Waterworld II". Und rechts daneben auf dem "Möbelhund" - das dient momentan als "ThaiRiver-Experimentalprojekt". Im kleinen schlanken Glas teste ich momentan eine Artemiakultur.

Per molti anni ho pensato che il punto di svolta si sarebbe avuto quando Linux fosse arrivato, preinstallato sull'hardware, sugli scaffali dell'Ipercoop, al pari di un normale PC Windows o di un MacIntosh. A quel punto Linux avrebbe potuto essere considerato un prodotto “maturo”, adatto al mercato di massa, ed il lavoro dei molti “supporter” come me avrebbe potuto considerarsi concluso.

Ieri, con qualche anno di anticipo sul previsto, ho avuto modo di vedere un ASUS EEE PC con Linux sugli scaffali dell'Ipercoop di Ferrara. Per 299 euro (che sono il 50% in più di quanto costa lo stesso oggetto in USA) chiunque può portarsi a casa, installato e funzionante, un Linux del tutto equivalente a qualunque Windows ed a MacOS X. Per quelli come me, è ormai tempo di cambiar mestiere (anche se, ovviamente, supportare Linux NON è il nostro mestiere ma solo una attività “politica”).

Dell, Acer, Asus, Lenovo, etc.

In realtà, questa novità era già stata annunciata da tempo. Da circa un anno a questa parte si susseguono gli annunci delle principali case produttrici di hardware. Ha iniziato Dell, circa un anno fa, dopo aver subito una serie di pressioni molto forti da parte degli utenti sul proprio sito IdeaStorm. Dell ci ha messo un bel po' prima di arrivare veramente a distribuire macchine desktop basate su Linux ed alla fine si è decisa a farlo solo sul mercato USA, grazie ad un accordo con Canonical (Ubuntu). Potete vedere i modelli offerti sul sito di Dell USA. Nonostante questo, Dell è stata la prima grande azienda a iniziare la distribuzione di macchine con Linux preinstallato. Sono seguite a ruota Acer (potete vedere un suo modello con Linux in vendita in Italia grazie a ComputerWorld), ASUS (con il famosissimo EEE PC che potete vedere sugli scaffali dell'Ipercoop) e Lenovo (ex-IBM). Purtroppo, anche Lenovo ha il pessimo vizio di distribuire i suoi modelli con Linux solo sul mercato USA.

In realtà, in Italia c'è un italianissimo produttore che offre PC con Linux preinstallato seguendo la vera logica del mondo OpenSource: MambaSoft (che monta la italianissima ed ottima distro OpenMamba).

Come che sia, al momento è effettivamente possibile comprare dei PC con Linux preinstallato prelevandoli dallo scaffale di un ipermercato od ordinandoli online. L'importanza di questa svolta non può sfuggire nemmeno agli osservatori più distratti.

A denti stretti

Come potete vedere, tutte le grandi case costruttrici di hardware vendono Linux molto, ma proprio molto malvolentieri. Non solo lo vendono quasi sempre solo sul mercato USA ma addirittura, anche quando lo rendono disponibile sul mercato europeo, pretendono di farlo allo stesso prezzo di una macchina Windows (come se Linux avesse un costo di licenza) e di applicare un assurdo cambio paritetico tra dollari USA e Euro. Non ancora contenti di questa assurda guerra intestina ad un loro prodotto, presente sul loro catalogo, accompagnano questa loro offerta commerciale con frasi come:

“ACER consiglia Windows per le attività quotidiane con il computer”

Ce ne sarebbe abbastanza per affossare qualunque prodotto. La ragione di questa apparente antipatia per Linux è ovvia: Microsoft fa sentire il suo enorme potere contrattuale dietro le quinte.

Nonostante questo, la strada ormai è segnata. Se uno dei grandi produttori immette sul mercato una macchina con Linux preinstallato, gli altri devono fare altrettanto per non perdere quote di mercato. Dato che ormai i grandi produttori che si sono imbarcati in questa avventura sono almeno tre o quattro, il meccanismo è chiaramente arrivato oltre la soglia di non ritorno.

Microsoft stessa riconosce che il tempo dei Sistemi Operativi commerciali sta per finire. Lo fa quando dice, per bocca di Steve Ballmer, che il futuro di M$ sta nella pubblicità (e quindi non più nel software).

Se si è arrivati a questo punto, nonostante la strenua autodifesa di M$, vuol dire che la richiesta di un sistema operativo libero non può più essere ignorata. Il mercato (o il “popolo”) lo vuole e le aziende produttrici sono costrette a concederlo. Questo la dice lunga anche su quanto sia realmente amato Windows dal mercato (specialmente dopo l'avvento di Windows Vista).

Android, LiMo, OpenMoko

Il brillante futuro di Linux però non è ancora iniziato. Lo vedrete con i vostri occhi nel 2009 e 2010, quando arriveranno sul mercato i primi smart phone ed i primi PDA basati su OpenMoko, LiMo e Android. Queste piattaforme software per telefoni cellulari di tipo “open” hanno già raccolto il consenso ed il supporto di gran parte delle case produttrici, a partire da Motorola per finire a Samsung ed a Nokia. Questo vuol dire che nei prossimi anni certi chiusissimi gioielli, come l'Apple iPhone e gli HTC, dovranno fare i conti con prodotti molto appetitosi ed aperti.

Come avrete notato, gli smart phone ed i PDA stanno affiancando da tempo i laptop e rischiano di sostituirli in molto compiti. Il vero futuro dell'informatica sta nei gingilli come iPhone, non nelle macchine da tavolo. E Linux è già lì, pronto a combattere con Windows e Symbian ad armi (almeno) pari.

In buona sostanza, nei prossimi anni troveremo Linux dovunque, anche sotto il cofano dell'auto.

L'annosa questione dei driver

Anche l'annosa questione dei driver è in via di risoluzione. ATI ed Nvidia sembrano già essersi rassegnate a rilasciare le informazioni necessarie allo sviluppo di driver open source e/o a fornire driver proprietari di buon livello per Linux. A questa (lungamente attesa) disponibilità, si aggiunge un progetto comunitario per lo sviluppo di driver come il Linux Driver Project. Con grandi nomi come Dell, Acer, Lenovo e ASUS nella lista delle aziende da supportare è solo questione di tempo per avere i driver Linux anche per l'hardware che finora aveva resistito ad ogni tentativo di integrazione.

L'annosa questione degli utenti

Resta invece irrisolto l'annoso problema degli utenti. Questo però è un problema che condividiamo con Windows e con MacOS X. Gli utenti che si trovano in difficoltà con Linux, in realtà si trovano spesso in difficoltà con i computer in senso lato, non importa quale sia il sistema operativo.

Qualunque distribuzione decente dal punto di vista della usability (e quindi NON Ubuntu con Gnome) è ormai quasi indistinguibile da Windows, esattamente come lo sono i suoi principali programmi, come OpenOffice (“clone” di MS Office), Thunderbird (“clone” di MS Outlook) o Firefox (“clone” di Internet Exploder).

Quando tengo dei corsi su Linux, a volte mi diverto ad iniziare con una prima lezione di circa 20 minuti in cui elogio Windows e MS Office. Alla fine della presentazione faccio notare ai presenti che il software che ho mostrato loro fino a quel momento era in realtà una versione adeguatamente”carrozzata” di Linux (Linux Vixta o simili). Ovviamente, non sempre e non tutti ci cascano ma è sorprendente quanta gente che pensava di conoscere bene Windows cada in questo semplice inganno. Cose simili le fanno anche alcuni miei amici con certe versioni di Linux “camuffate” da MacOS X, come DreamLinux, Linux Tiger o come quella che si può ottenere in questo modo: Taimila.

La realtà è che quasi sempre chi dichiara di ritenere “troppo difficile” o “non abbastanza potente” Linux, solitamente non lo ha mai usato in vita propria. Spesso, queste persone non sono in grado di reinstallare da soli il loro amatissimo Windows. Le loro rimostranze riguardo alla difficoltà di installare Linux sono quindi prive di fondamento. Il loro problema è l'installazione (di qualunque sistema operativo), non Linux. Nello stesso modo, spesso queste persone sono in grado di usare il PC per scaricare musica, per fare CD o per scambiare posta elettronica ma devono ricorrere all'amico per qualunque compito di amministrazione, anche semplicissimo come la configurazione del client di posta. Il loro problema non è quindi la presunta complessità di Linux ma la loro limitatissima conoscenza dell'informatica in generale.

Non ha quindi nessun senso tentare di convincere questi utenti a passare a Linux. Questi utenti passeranno a Linux quando qualcuno dirà loro di farlo dall'alto. Lo faranno senza capire e senza discutere, come hanno fatto nel momento in cui sono “passati” a Windows da MS/DOS o da carta e penna. Non sono questi gli utenti di cui preoccuparsi, ormai.

Firefox3, KDE4 ed altre bucce di banana

Piuttosto, sarebbero da evitare certe bucce di banana come il rilascio frettoloso di KDE4 (decisamente orrendo) e di Firefox 3 (che sembra contenere ancora dei bug piuttosto pericolosi). Linux deve gran parte della sua fama alla sua sicurezza ed alla sua stabilità. Vedere il browser che si pianta, vedere il desktop finito a metà o venire a conoscenza di bachi pericolosi in programmi di larga diffusione rischia di mettere Linux ed il suo software (Firefox, OpenOffice, Thunderbird, etc.) sullo stesso piano di Windows. Questo diventa un pericolo piuttosto serio nel momento in cui si cominciano a mettere vari interpreti di linguaggio dentro ai programmi, ripetendo la manovra azzardata di M$ con VBA dentro Office.

Al momento, Linux è ancora un enorme passo avanti rispetto a Windows sul piano della sicurezza. E tale deve restare.

Oltre Linux

Come che vada, Linux è ormai qui per restare. La stragrande maggioranza delle persone non lo adotterà finché non ci sarà costretta (esattamente come non ha adottato Windows finché non c'è stata costretta) ma Linux è ormai una solida realtà di mercato. Le grandi aziende lo sanno e questo è quello che conta.

Per quanto riguarda i linuxari come me, è tempo di godersi una vacanza. Non c'è più nessuno (di “convincibile” o di “importante”) da convincere. I decision maker e gli opnion leader sono già ampiamente convinti della necessità di dare largo spazio al pinguino. Gli altri seguiranno.
