There's just something about the band Electric Six, the band from Detroit that has, on numerous occasions, rocked my face right off. I discovered them whilst downloading large amounts of pirated copyrighted material from the Internet using my college's fat pipes. Among the many discoveries I made that year--Elton John is kind of overrated!--was Electric Six. Since then, my husband, friends and I have followed this band around like lost puppies for years now. We catch nearly every show they have in Missouri, along with many other Midwestern shows. Dick Valentine and the boys had us at "Danger! High Voltage."

Now, apart from recent albums like I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me That Restricts Me From Being the Master--yeah, dig the title--, they've also written and probably performed some of the music for a hip, new viral web campaign.

And who knew the ads would be for milk? Perhaps the milk people didn't know that Electric Six once released a song encouraging nuclear war on the dance floor or proclaiming that they "buy the drugs." But I digress.

The new concept is White Gold, an off-kilter funk-metal band fronted by some dweeb in a bad wig and two sassy ladies on bass and drums. They've released two videos on YouTube and an album on iTunes called All I Can Give is 2%. They were also featured in a short Newsweek blurb about how some middle aged white dudes are trying to make milk hip through viral Internet marketing.

So me, sucker for this band and sometimes-band-guestlist member, decided to check out White Gold. The verdict? I know it's a corporate jingle, in essence, but it rocks. It's got that cheeky Electric Six vibe going on. The vocals are clearly being performed by E6 lead singer Dick Valentine. As for the instrumentation, White Gold is missing the vital keyboards and rich instrumentation that comes with having six band members. No word yet on whether the rest of the band is performing on All I Can Give is 2%. I'll ask them the next time I see them, which could be a while because I hear they're taking a break from touring to work on their new album.

Go buy some Electric Six. You won't be sorry. Also, White Gold's two current music videos can be seen below. Enjoy!

Okay, so after watching those sexy sumo wrestlers on that Subaru commercial so many times, I realized the song on that commercial is so damn catchy. Fire in the disco!! FIRE IN THE TACO BELL! DANGER! DANGER! HIGH VOLTAGE! Superb. Completely random, yet earfully pleasing. I've always been a believer of lyrics that make sense, but I do make exceptions. Sometimes it's just fun to yell DANGER! DANGER! HIGH VOLTAGE! In that distinctive aerosmithish-voice. Anyway, this band is fun to listen too. Like when I first discovered the Cribs, enjoying this! Air guitar safe too. In fact, what I do his, when everyones asleep at home, and the lights are out, I lay on the bed with the headphones on and air guitar to songs I like.

Laying here listening to Electric Six has given me a really fun idea. We'll see how fun I think it is in the morning.

Vendredi, je suis allé voir la présentation du nouveau single des Cocorosie dans une galerie d'art, embarquée à l'improviste par une amie fan. Bon, niveau présentation pouvait faire mieux (passe deux fois le clip (assez étrange d'ailleurs) puis balance de la musique-autre un verre de ponch et hop c'est déjà fini, donc pas de rencontre avec les artistes ect ect...un peu déçue) mais le titre en lui même est pas mal du tout. Un tube tout dessiné ; au bout de deux fois seulement, on l'a déjà en tête, je ne sais pas vraiment si le tube est creux ou non, seul le temps nous le dira. On voit déjà au loin débarqué un album bien plus typé électro que le précédent, toujours avec le style particulier des Cocorosie marqué au fer rouge. Nouvel album à guetter. Je viens de me réécouter l'album de MGMT. J'avoue être un peu passé à coté de quelque chose. A vrai dire j'ai tellement été subjugué par Electric Feel que tout le reste ma paru, certes très bon, mais voilà. Et là j'ai l'impression de devenir vraiment fan mais quelque chose de vraiment profond. L'album de The Bird And The Bees est excellent, ainsi que les EP. Une petite douceur à l'état pure. Ensuite, sachez que PEUT-ÊTRE (et si je le mets en majuscule, c'est pas pour rien) Zack Starkey quitte Oasis...encore un qui s'est fait viré par les Gallagher... Nouvelles chansons pour The Spinto Band sur leur myspace.

Ensuite, pour ce qui est de la Playlist, nous avons bien évidement le nouveau (en bonne qualité!) des Cocorosie, une reprise de Estelle (que pourtant, je n'aime pas tant que ça) plutôt sympathique, un petit air familier et assez intéressant d'El Perro Del Mar, un B-side du single Wondering des Dirty Pretty Things qui serait apparemment dans le nouvel album, lui aussi très sympathique et enfin une petite des Evaporators pour finir un peu en cacahuète.

I was over a friends place the other weekend, in one of his roommate's bedroom/attic spaces watching videos by Gunther. 

I had only become aware of him once before when I was over there. But out of sheer chance it turns out that Boston is the city that is tentatively being considered for the first ever Gunther-Palozza on May 20th (which is ironically my friend's birthday..)

I feel confident that going would consist of me wading through a sea of gay men and college girls whipped up into a Gunther-fervor.

Since i'm entirely out of the loop on popular music I have no idea if Gunther is a social meme for anyone in the 18-22 demograph. While I have a fetish for obscure electronic music centered around out of date image identities from the 80s, I find Gunther to be too far pop for me to actually listen to (even if done for the sake of comedy).

The videos on the other hand are fucking hilarious. I must have watched his videos at least 6 times each since saturday night. Close inspection shows whoever did them has a good hand for pausing on picturesque frames that amplify the cheese as some mock drama goes down, such as two men fighting for the rights to neck a girl.

If Gunther-Palozza actually happens I dont think I can afford to miss it. I'm already missing Cut Copy and I feel that this has the potential to be absolutely horrid. I always have a begrudging respect for those who really lay it all out there to lampoon life as nothing more than the lila that it is, whether its Gunther doing euro-club culture or someone like Electric Six poking fun at David Lee Roth style cock rock.   

A quick wikipedia run through notes that he is actually a model and club owner from Sweden named Mats Soderlund. He portrays himself as a swinger and claims to be 29 on the Gunther website but according to other sources he is actually closer to 40 and has two kids.

...as if cyberspatial hedonism and making out to the Electric Six weren't purpose enough... Nevertheless, here's a shot at an answer:

If we feel okay with self-applying the name "Dumpster Makeout Party" to signify our collective identity, there must be something to that phrase that speaks to us. So, what ties that moniker together? And why does it feel so damn good to be a part of it?

At the intersection of dumpsters, makeouts, and parties, I gather, you have a sort of intentional cultural and political recklessness. The "dumpster" part seems to mean that, on a material level, we try to live cheaply, consciously, and creatively. The "makeout" part has to do with how we conceive of ourselves in relation to one another both physically and emotionally--we love each other deeply, freely, and often. "Party" is what we do; it's the state of Being, the nature/form of the social space we create & occupy whenever there are 2 or more of us in the same place at the same time (see Hakim Bey on the "Temporary Autonomous Zone" - lissathegnairy's post, below). So Dumpster Makeout Party is a phrase that pretty comprehensively describes the way we, as a group, live. It sounds hot, too.

What's the purpose of this blog? To collect and share and discuss the kinds of things that people who live this way find interesting and important--or strange and funny--or outrageous and provocative. It's a blog like any other, but its lens onto the world is us. There are political blogs, food blogs, sewing blogs, personal blogs, technology blogs, music blogs, and at this point there are probably blogging blogs. Well, this is a Dumpster Makeout Party blog. So fuck it, blog on.

Pourquoi les écouter ?

1. Du pur bonheur, c'est vivant, les paroles sont un peu nuls mais à la limite on s'en fout pas mal. La tête fait la poule (vous savez le mouvement de tête ridicule qui nous prend quand l'on écoute de la techno) alors tout va bien. Parait-il que ce fut le tube de l'année 2003, je ne l'ai pas vu passé...Vaut mieux tard que jamais.
2. Je ne sais pas si vous avez vu la fameuse pub de Coca-Cola où l'on peut entendre cette musique composée à l'occasion par les White Stripes. La musique est toute bête mais extrêmement addictive!!! De plus, elle est vraiment courte donc on ne se privera pas de l'écouter en boucle...
3. J'aime ce genre de chanteuse qui apporte vraiment quelque chose, un univers, une voix (proche de celle des Cocorosie, je trouve). L'EP entier est extrêmement bon.Les musiques font environ une dizaine de minutes chacune. C'est sur il faut prendre sont temps pour écouter Joanna Newsom mais cela en vaut vraiment le coup.
4. J'ai récemment vu la Sciences des Rêves (je suis toujours un peu en retard) et je me suis donc procurée toute l'OST qui est vraiment très bonne. Moi qui disais tant de mal des Willowz...j'avoue être conquise!
5. Une petite nouveauté de I Was There, vraiment pas mal du tout, je n'ai pas réussi à trouver une version de meilleure qualité ; j'en suis navrée. ATTENTION, on est vite accro!
6. Charlotte ne poste pas beaucoup sur son blog mais quand elle s'y met on en entend parlé. Merveilleuse chanson de Cocosuma, l'intro me fait un peu penser à du Joy Division en passant par Lykke Li...enfin c'est beau
7. Je m'étais promis de ne pas poster de reprise avant le Cover Me qui sera dédié aux White Stripes mais c'est vraiment trop tentant. A savoir que Loretta Lyn est produit par Jack White en personne.
8. Toujours en provenance de L'OST de la Science des Rêves . Un petit régale, qu'on prend plaisir à chantonner dans la douche, presque sans honte.
9. C'est vraiment impressionnant de voire écrit : "Jack White Feat Rolling Stones" en fait, ca l'est un peu moins. C'est bon mais un peu décevant. J'ai un peu l'impression de passer à coté de quelque chose mais l'enthousiasme n'est pas là...Ce duo reste néanmoins de bonne qualité.
10. J'ai toujours hais les Kooks pour des raisons très douteuse. Je pense que c'est tout simplement le fait que ce soit formule "jeunes, beaux, talentueux, aimez nous!" C'est ridicule, je sais, mais impossible d'écouter plus d'une chanson. A la limite, les couplets de "Ooh la " ne sont pas mauvais, ou encore "Seaside", dénué d'originalité mais sympathique. "See The Sun" quant à elle me parait assez lointain de tous les aprioris que j'ai eue (et que j'ai encore malgré tout) sur ce groupe (et que j'assume pleinement). Ecoutez moi cette GUITARE! La voix d'adolescent muant de Luke Pritchard ne m'énerve presque pas : Une balade plutôt sympa à vrai dire. J'ai du mal à le dire mais les Kooks sont (légèrement) remonté dans mon estime.

Leur nom est sur les lèvres de tous ceux qui voient le talent arriver de loin. Bientôt, leur électro libre sera partout. Pourtant, on ne sait pas grand-chose d'eux hormis qu'ils veulent en dire le moins possible. Ce qui, en marketing moderne, est déjà beaucoup. Fidèles à la tradition d'anonymat (relatif) qui prévaut sur la scène dance, ces trois Australiens estiment, à juste titre, que leurs chansons sont plus importantes qu'eux et préférables aux longs discours biographiques.

On se contentera donc de signaler qu'ils se prénomment Vincent, Andy et Daniel, mais ont décidé, comme les Ramones (avec qui ils partagent un goût prononcé pour les plaisirs immédiats), de tous s'appeler Juggernaut. Vincent et Andy Juggernaut se sont rencontrés à l'école, à Melbourne, et ont commencé par sévir dans un groupe de rock basique avant d'évoluer vers une dance pop qui, depuis quelques maxis et remixes, fait se pâmer leurs pairs et les amateurs du genre.

Depuis plusieurs mois, les Midnight Juggernauts ont attiré l'attention en remixant des titres pour !!! (Chk Chk Chk), The Presets, Dragonette, Electric Six et Damn Arms. Ils figurent aussi en bonne place sur de nombreuses compilations et ont déjà tourné avec Scissor Sisters ou Bloc Party.

Bien inspirés, les Midnight Juggernauts ont récemment abandonné les tenues de scène de leurs débuts (des costumes de dictateur...) pour s'habiller comme leur public, jeune, bigarré et très porté sur la fête. Vincent et Andy ont également fini par trouver le batteur dont ils rêvaient en la personne de Daniel Stricker, devenu Daniel... Juggernaut !

Paru l'été dernier en Australie sur leur propre label, "Dystopia", le premier album des Midnight Juggernauts, réunit une douzaine de chansons pop flamboyantes très inspirées par Electric Light Orchestra mais pas seulement. Au détour d'un refrain, dans un coin d'arrangement, au creux de la voix de Vincent, on constate la présence d'influences diverses et variées : Air, M83, le Bowie de "Low", Can, Bauhaus, New Order, Giorgio Moroder, etc.

Mais au-delà des allusions, c'est la réelle personnalité musicale du trio, qui se dit investi d'une mission galactique (?), qui fait surtout on charme : "Dystopia" auquel, en signant avec EMI France, les Midnight Juggernauts entendent bien donner une exposition mondiale, brille par la qualité intrinsèque de ses mélodies entêtantes, son éclectisme de ton, ses vocaux angéliques et ses ambiances sonores proches, parfois, de celles des films de John Carpenter. A des kilomètres des bidouillages mesquins de certains, ces explorateurs sonores voient grand et osent des suites d'accords en relief, des décharges éclectiques, et des retours vers le paradis. Appréciés par Justice ou Daft Punk, ils en ont la puissance et la grâce.

"Into The Galaxy", "Road To Recovery" ou "So Many Frequencies", même si elles risquent de faire un malheur sur les pistes de danse européennes, raviront également les amateurs de pop et de rock sans œillères qui apprécieront certainement de surfer sur ces vagues bien plus hautes que la moyenne, la tête dans cette disco d'ailleurs un brin nostalgique.
