FOX has been running ad's all week hyping their new show Fringe. One ad in particular uses the song "Walking on Air" by Kerli. We have to say, this song fits in so well with the show. I saw this infomercial a long time ago, and over the past few weeks it has repeatably been playing on TV. Possibly the weirdest infomercial for a product ever. Not only is it on TV everyday, t's almost gotten to the point where you can't ignore it. The announcer for the commercial is quite...interesting. Check it out. Epic Fail? or Epic Win?

Oh Snap! Xbox Live is having a promotion called "Extended Play Download Days" going on. A lot of content has been marked down from price. Games like Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, and even Oblivion have had some of their content marked down for this special. So I urge you to check out the link. Rhyme & Form: A sonnet formation with no break (akin to Shakespeare)

Tone: Annoyed, frustrated yet content (at the end)

Imagery: Nature, Ireland of old

Themes: Loneliness, conflicts, frustrations, rural life

Note his stage in life, this stage being the protesting Dublin Poet.

The poem is primarily focussed on a dispute over a portion of land. Kavanagh contrasts this Irish scene to the 1939 Munich crisis and also to the legend of Troy. In this way Kavanagh not only relates Ireland to ancient Greece and Homer but he also praises both contrasting images.

The interesting thing about this poem is that an epic poem usually recants a heroic tale over the course of some hundred, if not thousand lines. The same poem will cover a range of vast, geographical locations and span over a period of time.

The opening lines are open to interpretation by any reader:

I have lived in important places, times
When great events were decided

Kavanagh refers to Ireland here as he writes after 1922 in a time when Ireland have gained their independence, he also writes from a time of international conflict, having just seen one World War, a second seems imminent. Nevertheless, it is easy to see what Kavanagh is saying here.

He goes on to describe the scene that he witnessed, ‘who owned/ That half a road of rock, a no-man's land' - in short there is a dispute over a portion of land. The next part of the poem injects the reader straight in to the Irish-ness of the situation. We see the Duffys and Old McCabe arguing, the Duffys shout at McCabe, McCabe himself appears ready for a fight as he is ‘stripped to the waist' - we are given a scene of ‘instancy' as we view the action and the movement in this stanza.[1]

Kavanagh brings Ireland to Germany as he recalls the ‘Munich bother' - the crisis in Germany at the time leading up to World War II. Kavanagh wonders which scene is more important, the one he witnessed or the scene on the global stage. Kavanagh, for a moment begins to doubt the importance of Ireland, in particular Irish rural life. In deliberating this notion, Kavanagh begins lose faith in the rural areas of Inniskeen (Ballyrush and Gortin), but only for a moment as we see in the next line that Homer's ghost[2] reassures him. Homer said that he ‘made the Iliad from such a local row', thus Kavanagh sees that epic poetry can in fact be made from local events. It is the work of deities, not mortals, Kavanagh suggests, that endow human action with epic stature. Seen in that light, no event should be considered too humble, no ‘local row' too unimportant - if gods choose to dignify it. Kavanagh seems capable now of aligning himself alongside such gods as it is he who decides what is important. Séamus Heaney said that ‘even though the stage gives itself over to two Monaghan farmers and successfully sets Ballyrush and Gortin in balance against Munich, it is not saying that the farmers and the Monaghan region are important in themselves. They are important only in the light of the mind that is now playing upon them.'

When we compare the lines ‘Which/ Was most important' and ‘Gods make their own importance', we are faced with Kavanagh's hesitation and resolution, and yet we must take in account Kavanagh's frustrated tone of rural life that would last until after his battle with cancer. However, is his tone beginning to change? Whereas before he may have dismissed such a notion regarding rural life, now he seems to look beyond the confines of Ireland for a reason not to disregard such scenes of pastoral life.

If you haven't been to The Crucible in Oakland, I'd recommend looking into it. They teach welding, electronics, blasksmithing, stone carving, fire dancing, and all sorts of other cool stuff. The muse is going to take their glass kiln-casting classes, because there's something specific she wants to make out of gears and glass.

See, if you know her well, she's easy to shop for. Maybe the Crucible sells those outfits too.

What brings me back to this dome isn't shopping, but hopefully some bad sci-fi.

As it turns out, the new Vin Diesel movie is actually not as horrible as the reviewers think it is. I wouldn't make a very good critic. I'd much rather enjoy a sci-fi movie than hate it, and usually that's enough.

The last time I was here, I was above the dome, not below it. Either way, the view is nice.

Back at home, I have a mini-project to do. The muse's new mobile phone charges from USB ports, but only specific ones. It's very picky, which is a pain.

...so I'm building a "no whining" cable for the phone. Using this, it'll charge off of anything.

It works perfectly, and the phone's a lot less fussy now. No matter what you plug it into, it charges right up. It's not 100% safe, but that's not required of anything, ever.

The 2-year-old cat has decided resistors are really (really) fun. (sigh)

...and the 18-year-old cat fell asleep on his face without actually lying down.

Tonight we're heading to Epic Roasthouse. We've been there for brunch, but never for dinner. Good food, friendly staff, and a fantastic table outside.

...and very nearly another seltzer fight.

This image appeared on TNA Wrestling's Website last night. For those that have followed wrestling, its pretty damn obvious as to who it is. He has done all he can do in WWE, and it is time for him to help out some striving promotions, such as TNA. So the question is, Will he feud with Abyss? Many people are already speculating it.

Der Top Favorit ist für mich ganz klar: Martin Falch! Der Schöper der Tales of the Past Reihe hat mit Divided Soul wieder ein Meisterwerk kreiert. Dieser perfekt animierte Machinima handelt von zwei Orks die einst beste Freunde waren doch nun vor einem großen Konflikt stehen. Obwohl er nur 7 Minuten lang ist schafft Falch absolut episches Feeling durch geniale Kampfszenen und gute Musikauswahl zu erreichen. Einfach Perfekt!

Die Wahl des zweiten Favoriten ist schon etwas schwerer: Einen höheren Bekanntheitssgrad und momentan auch die meisten Views hat Olibith (der diesen Sommer schon einen Laptop gewonnen hat) mit Le Terroriste einem Machinima gemischt aus WoW und Mass Effekt. Allerdings finde ich den Film nicht wirklich gelungen da er einen sehr stumpfen (französischen?) Humor hat, wie Bountiful Chest auch aber doch ganz anders. Die Animation ist allerdings gut gelungen, obwohl man den neuen Rechner noch nicht so merkt.

Wesentlich besser gemacht und wirklich alles auf Sieg gesetzt wurde The Way of Life von Johan Vagstedt aka Fireboltpro. Er hat Sound Effekte von Caruu, Musik von Nathan Allen Pinard, Drewbie und Synchronsprecher aus Tales of the Past, dazu eigenen Animationen der Charaktere und ein spezielles Lippenbewegungsprogramm benutzt um sein Machinima so gut werden zu lassen, wie möglich. In der Tat kommt es auch nah an Divided Soul heran und ich weiss nicht wie die Jury da entscheiden wird. Inhaltlich geht es um einen erfahrenen Hauptmann der in Arthas Expedition in Northrend war und nun nach einem  Gespräch mit einem jungen im sterben-liegenden Soldaten (Drewbies erste ernste Rolle? ;) ) dem Weg des Lebens folgend keine Lust mehr zu Kämpfen hat.

Momentan die zweitmeisten Likes jedoch hat ein ganz anderer Machinima nämlich Outlaws of Azeroth von RedEyeLobine. Dieser sehr lustige Film über zwei Goldbettler ist zwar nicht allzu brilliant animiert überzeugt aber durch seinen Witz und Charme und ist außerdem einen herrliche Parodie auf die Welt von Warcraft. Hoffentlich schickt Professor Associate Evil nicht wieder Barneby los um die Begger zu killen, dann haben wir es hier mit dem vielversprechensten außenseiter zu tun.

Weitere Chancen auf eine Platzierung in den Top 10 haben:

Pinkhair (wegen seinem Bekanntheitsgrad und des recht coolen wenn auch im 30er Jahre Kinostil gehaltenen Films The Robber Baron of Warsong Gulch, der wieder viele Zitate beinhaltet vor allem aus Busted)

Mike "Spiff" Booth (wegen seiner Wettbewerbserfahrung und seinem coolen und lustigen Frankenstein Musikvideo Live)

Irdeen und Hendrik Ebert ( weil sie ihre beiträge schon ganz am anfang des monats gepostet haben und über die zeit schon etwas fame angesammelt haben außerdem sind die videos im ersten fall qualitativ sehr gut im zweiten von der story her recht lustig und auch nicht schlecht animiert ( der erste film handelt von murlocs daher kein kommentar zu story))

Und zu guter Letzt als große Unbekannte Mushanga und X-Cross mit auf ihre spezielle Art und Weise sehr lustigen Machinimas. Gnome ftw! Möge der beste gewinnen!

While I'm on the subject RugbyBoy deserves a note of serious gratitude. He lent me his time and his truck to help me move this past weekend and didn't complain. He is such a good friend to me and while I jokingly tell him, "see, this is what happens when you have a little sister," he really is part of my family now. I'm making fudge for him on Sunday as a tiny bit of the giant thank you I owe him. It's the very, very least I could do.

Wednesday night the German, her husband and I went to see The Wizard of Oz. The Dimond Center theater shows old movies for cheap on Wednesday nights and I jumped at the chance to see it on the big screen. So much fun. It's amazing when you watch a movie that you loved as a child, again as an adult, how different the movie is. How you laugh at different jokes, and how you get jokes that never occurred to you. There was also a little girl there dressed up as Dorothy. She had the sparkly red shoes and everything. Awesome.

I have been super busy at work but in a good way. I've absolutely fallen in love with this project and it sucks that I'll have to put it down at the end of November. I'm applying for a couple jobs up here because quite honestly, now that I don't hate my living situation, Alaska isn't so bad. The biggest stipulation is still that I make enough money to go home if I need to. I want to be there for my sister's graduation from college and my grandfather's 90th...and Christmas. Okay, so maybe I should just move home. I'm very conflicted.

I do know I won't be serving as a volunteer again for The Company. The government is cutting the funding for the whole state so the library won't be getting another volunteer as they were promised when they started the program. Lovely. I hate it because it puts the library in the awful position of losing a worker who's sole purpose is this project. I'm worried it will fall by the wayside.

The SC/Vandy game was on ESPN when I was at the gym last night. I was on the bike and listening to it through headphones. This was the absolute quietest I have ever, EVER been during a football game. That is not to say, however, that I was not gesturing, shaking my head and occasionally sitting back and throwing my hands up. When I got off the bike at halftime one of the guys on a treadmill behind me said it was good to see a girl enjoying football so much. I smiled and told him he should move to the South. We do football right.
