Rellenos de papa. Stuffed potato balls. Not for the vegetarian.

I am quite sure that you can get Rellenos de papa many many places here in the 'Yoke. I have had them at the corner of Appleton and High, where they were crispy and a bit spicy (the hamburger inside is sometimes spiced), and at Fernandez Family Restaurant on High (their Rellenos de papa are not spiced at all, and the outer shell is softer).

Just went to the newly re-opened (new owners) Mi Plaza on Main and had some fresh and ultra crisp Rellenos de Papa. The winner? Mi Plaza. Hands down. The outer layer was delightfully golden brown, inner potato goodness was soft and....potato-y. Meat was well seasoned.

Why no pics? Because I was too busy cramming my mouth full. It was also a warm sunny day at Mi Plaza, so we had our snack out in the courtyard. Or plaza.

Hay gritos que por más fuertes y desesperados no escuchamos. ¿Por qué? La indiferencia también nos mantiene presos. Es irónico si pensamos en un mundo globalizado y en los avances tecnológicos en materia de comunicación. Estamos solos.

¿Cuándo debe afectarnos algo? ¿Solo en el momento en que resultamos directamente afectados?

Muchos son los pecados que se han cometido contra México. En la Historia hay tantos capítulos que deberían llenar de vergüenza a los gobernantes de todas las épocas, pero también a nosotros como sociedad porque, si bien es muy cierto que hemos destacado por la solidaridad que nos brota a flor de piel, también lo es que a veces preferimos no saber, callar, soportar… eso es indiferencia: la ausencia de cualquier movimiento, el vacío de acción.

El 8 de diciembre de 1659, Fray García de San Francisco fundó la Misión de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de los Mansos del Paso del Norte, hoy Ciudad Juárez.

Localizada frente a El Paso, Texas, es la urbe con mayor población de la frontera norte y, a partir de 1993, es un lugar donde reina la impunidad, la injusticia, la corrupción y el terror. En Ciudad Juárez ser mujer es la mayor atrocidad que se pueda cometer porque ahí las mujeres son objeto de actos abominables y sus gritos suplicando ayuda no son oídos… todavía.

Bajo Juárez es el título del documental producido por la actriz Vanessa Bauche, bajo la dirección de Alejandra Sánchez Orozco y escrita por ella misma y por José Antonio Cordero.

Antes de que lograra su estreno comercial, este viernes 3 de octubre, fue presentado en el Teatro El Vicio hace un par de años. Ese día, Jesusa Rodríguez dijo: “El escándalo en México es que alguien se atreva a decir la verdad y a exigir justicia. Estamos a cuatro días de las elecciones, frente a un gobierno abyecto y corrupto (se refería a Vicente Fox), que afortunadamente ya se va. Pero sabemos que no se irá impune. Estoy segura que el pueblo de México logrará, en muy breve tiempo, desterrar la tortura a la que ha sido sometido históricamente, y esto no será un logro de ningún gobierno, será de cada una de las personas que no han dado ni un paso atrás en la exigencia de los derechos humanos”.

Con sólo 12 copias –una verdadera burla tomando en cuenta que para otras películas el número es mucho más alto- esta denuncia va más allá del lado morboso y está sustentado, además de testimonios, en largas y profundas investigaciones realizadas por los periodistas Diana Washington Valdez y Sergio González, autores de Cosecha de Mujeres y Huesos en el Desierto, respectivamente.

Sus conclusiones hacen evidente una relación facinerosa entre los dueños de las maquiladoras, hombres poderosos, el gobierno, la policía, por supuesto el crimen organizado y las más de 500 mujeres asesinadas y las mil desaparecidas en Ciudad Juárez.

Diana Washington habla de informes hechos por el FBI en donde aparecen empresarios de Ciudad Juárez, de El Paso y Tijuana sospechosos de estar involucrados y a quienes, por el poder que tienen, han sido inmunizados por el gobierno federal.

Únicamente hace mención de apellidos. No da nombres. De hecho, Bajo Juárez no señala a los asesinos, sino a las autoridades que también son culpables “por omisión”. Entre los apellidos se encuentran Molinar, Sotelo, Hank, Rivera, Fernández, Zaragoza, Cabada, Molina, Fuentes, Hernández, Urbina, Cano, Martínez y Domínguez.

Se habla de algunos lugares que están implicados en los feminicidios: las escuelas de computación ECCO, la casa de música Paraíso Musical (calle 16 de Septiembre contra esquina de la Catedral), el bar Club 15, el Club Marlboro y el restaurante La Sevillana.

Estos lugares forman el circuito de la muerte, de acuerdo al reporte del FBI con fecha 24 de febrero de 2003: “...su jefe Lic. Urbina conjunto con su chalán (un muchacho de bigote, flaco y prepotente), sirven como “Lookout” para reclutar chicas de nuevo. Ellos dos se ponen en contacto con niñas que visitan la tienda de música nombrada “Paraíso Musical” por la 16 de Septiembre, contra esquina catedral de Juárez. Niñas van adentro de la tienda y al salir, se encuentran solas, poco después de ser perseguidas sin que se den cuenta, otros jóvenes les llegan y les piden información personal para una escuela llamado ECCO, por la misma calle. Por alguna manera u otra estas niñas están contactadas para ir al lugar del Lic. Urbina nombrado La Sevillana, cerca del club 16, donde allí dentro del restaurant están amarradas, tape puesto en sus boquitas, y llevadas por afuera en un callejón donde proliferan prostitutas”.

No es de sorprender que nuestras autoridades saben perfectamente quiénes son los asesinos materiales e intelectuales. Incluso, Diana Washington ha declarado que tienen conocimiento de que gente cercana a Vicente Fox está involucrada y es muy probable que forman parte de la lista de los Amigos de Fox, conocidos por haber aportado sumas millonarias para su campaña por la Presidencia.

Son varias las líneas de investigación que se han seguido: tráfico de órganos, crimen organizado, pornografía y satanismo. Como ya es característico en el proceder de nuestras autoridades, también se ha utilizado el recurso del chivo expiatorio en el que inocentes han sido aprehendidos y presentados a la sociedad como los asesinos, además de intimidar y acosar a los familiares de las víctimas para que guarden silencio.

Es aberrante que el gobierno estatal de Chihuahua haya decidido cerrar la Oficina para la Búsqueda de Mujeres Desaparecidas, que dependía de la Procuraduría de Justicia del Estado de Chihuahua.

Lo que sigue sucediendo en Ciudad Juárez, lo que hacen con nuestras mujeres mexicanas, es la imagen de una sociedad que se ha ido enfermando, que con su silencio e indiferencia se vuelve no solo permisiva, sino alentadora del lado miserable del ser humano.

Nunca como en estos días hemos presenciado el esplendor de la lujuria asesina, del sadismo y la impunidad. Por eso es que vuelvo a preguntar: hasta que yo me vea afectado directamente, ¿es cuando debo actuar y escuchar?

¿POR QUÉ A MÍ?

Esta nota inicia con un estracto de una reflexión que escribió Nakarowari Leal Ortiz, sobreviviente. Aquí el texto completo:

Por la novela circulan -muchos bajo otros nombres- Rafael Gumucio, Matías Rivas, Roberto Merino, Eugenio Tellez, Patricio Dittborn, Waldo Rojas, Ricardo Lagos Weber, Max Marambio y el propio Fernández, entre otros. Uno más, otros menos, todos están metidos en una vida irresponsable y facilísima, donde el mayor problema es la infección al pene que sufre -y le encanta sufrir- a Gumucio. El resto es una larga chimuchina aderezada con alcohol, algo de marihuana, almuerzos en el Lomit's y chupe de locos. Y está la historia de Marín.

Marín aparece desdoblado en los personajes de Gastón Miranda y Carlos Iribarren. Ambos son escritores y viejos queribles aunque insoportables, pero que parecen vivir en mundos paralelos. El primero es el de la patota. El segundo, un hombre mayor que viaja a Buenos Aires para reecontrarse con su primera esposa. Es un encuentro clandestino que el narrador decide espiar con el único gran objetivo de escribirlo. Iribarren seguirá la corriente: atontado por su reencuentro -que se alarga por meses-, le relatará detalles escabrosos de éste a Fernández. (Todavía no entiendo por qué Iribarren y Miranda no son el mismo.)

Básicamente, ahí está Los Nenes. 176 páginas que posan de carnavalescas y que, a mi entender, falla: es de una soberbia aburridísima. ¿Por qué debiera importarnos las escenas cotidianas del grupo de amigos de Fernández? Asumo que Jorge Herralde, cabeza de Anagrama, supuso que las aventuras del creador de The Clinic no eran poca cosa. Sobre todo si se trataban de sus noches con la escena literaria chilena, a las que estaban invitados un columnista políticamente incorrecto como Gumucio, el editor del sello que rescata la mejor poesía chilena -Rivas, de ediciones UDP-, el director de Random House Mondadori en Chile -Dittborn-, un pintor de cierto renombre como Tellez y el viejo Marín. Era para confundirse.

Pero Los Nenes no es sobre la escena literaria chilena. La escena, si es que existe, es más amplia y -a favor de Fernández- mucho más fome. Y aunque los protagonistas de la novela tienen su cuento, Fernández no es capaz de demostrarlo. Se corta las manos tontamente al decir que en su patota cualquier atisbo de seriedad está literalmente prohibido y termina anotando una seguidilla de anécdotas de tono irónico donde se mofa de todos sus amigos, menos de él. Lo mejor del libro, porque tampoco es una mierda, es el retrato que hace Fernández de Marín: un mamut infantil insidioso e insoportable, pero que el escritor trata con cariño. Ahí está lo único que hace que Los Nenes importe algo: el retrato de Marín. Un imagen más humana, más cómica, más real y menos literaria que la que Marín podría hacer de si mismo.

Pese a ello, mi duda es por qué Fernández creyó que él podía escribir sobre la vida de Marín mejor que el mismo Marín. Toda la obra del viejo es una crónica sobre su vida y aunque algunos le pese, o les aburra -porque sí, su estilo aburre-, está muy bien escrita. De hecho, la repuesta de Marín a Los Nenes no han sido entrevistas, sino un relato. Se llama Literatura 1, apareció en la nuevísima y recomendable revista Hueders y en menos de una página narra cómo fue que él le contó “asutillos confidenciales” a un joven periodista y éste escribió una novela con el material: “Hay gente en el mundo con más sagacidad”, escribe en la última línea.

Marín tiene lista una segunda parte, que según él, cuenta más o menos esto: “Un escritor que le ha ido muy bien, su novela ha tenido gran éxito, pero bueno, todos los éxitos finalmente se agotan, se secan los laureles. Pasa el tiempo, pasa un año, dos, hasta que le empiezan a decir, bueno y tu próximo libro cuándo. Entra ahí a escribir un nuevo libro sin saquear a nadie, ya no puede estar urgeteando en la vida de los demás y se ve ante el fracaso de escribir. Es la historia de un fracaso”.

Ahora, aclarémoslo de nuevo: nadie le ha quitado el saludo a nadie. Los cuentitos de Marín funcionan bien como respuestas, pero justamente por eso meten el ruido que necesita Fernández para Los Nenes. Sus “balas zigzageantes” son una buena campaña de marketing. Todo queda en familia. La pandilla cierra filas. Marín cuida a sus nenes. Demora el olvido. Trata que esto parezca algo más que una anécdota.

Había otra solución, una mucho mejor y que probablemente jamás habría aceptado Fernández: Los Nenes debió circular exclusivamente entre los amigos, transformarse en un texto clandestino, secreto y despiadado sobre la patota de intelectuales progres enemigos de la seriedad que se enfiestan con Fernández. Un texto mítico que cuenta las infidelidades de Marín y cierta borrachera delirante de Max Marambio. Debió correr fotocopiado. Fernández solo habría aceptado su autoría en privado y borracho. Publicamente lo negaría con una sonrisa irónica. Pero Los Nenes perdió toda su dinamita cuando llegó a librerías, envuelto en las tan respetables portadas plomas de la colección hispanoamericana de Anagrama. Una lástima. Pudo haber sido historia.

Aquel 31 de julio del 2008, casi 50,000 tijuanenses celebraron el cierre de los festejos del 119 aniversario de la ciudad con el concierto de Alejandro Fernández en la canalización del Río Tijuana.
Los miles de asistentes entraron de manera totalmente gratuita al espacio acondicionado en la Canalización del Río Tijuana. Familias enteras entraron al canal que lucía limpio y seguro.
Durante más de 2 horas, "El Potrillo" deleitó al público que coreó cada una de sus canciones.

El detalle especial por el aniversario de la ciudad fueron los temas "El Cachanilla" y "Las mañanitas", que hicieron vibrar a la gente con varios minutos de fuegos artificiales en el cielo.

Las casi 50,000 asistentes lograron enviar un mensaje de unidad al exterior de que hoy más que nunca Tijuana está preparada para enfrentar con valentía los retos que tiene por delante.

Con este exitoso evento se avanzó en la recuperación de espacios públicos seguros para el sano esparcimiento de las familias de la ciudad.

Tijuana está lista para ofrecer más espectáculos de talla internacional en la canalización del Río, un espacio público seguro para todos, donde por lo pronto, ya se planea habilitar canchas y espacios deportivos.

La municipalidad distrital de Chicama y el Programa Nacional de Movilización por la Alfabetización (PRONAMA) iniciaron, el último jueves 25 de septiembre, un ambicioso programa de alfabetización que busca eliminar el analfabetismo en este populoso distrito. Con la masiva participación de los aspirantes a supervisores y facilitadores se dio inicio a las capacitaciones de quienes tendrán a cargo las acciones operativas del programa que pretende dotar a los iletrados de las competencias básicas de lectura, escritura y cálculo.

“Según los datos del INEI y de la Encuesta Nacional de Hogares (ENAHO), en el distrito de Chicama existen mil 153 iletrados que constituyen nuestra meta a alfabetizar, para lo que se requieren 88 facilitadores y seis supervisores”, explicó Sonia Rodríguez Fernández, sectorista adjunta del PRONAMA. La especialista informó que la meta para la región La Libertad es alfabetizar un aproximado de 31 mil personas iletradas, en la provincia de Ascope sólo se han considerado los distritos de Paiján y Chicama.

Conjuntamente con los regidores Elena Chávez de Guibert y Luis Calderón Plasencia, la alcaldesa de Chicama, Mirtha Sánchez Zafra, resaltó la importancia de este programa de alfabetización que permitirá a los ciudadanos que por distintas razones no pudieron hacerlo en su oportunidad, capacitarse en las habilidades básicas de lectura, escritura y cálculo. “Esto les permitirá interactuar como personas alfabetizadas en un mundo cada vez más competitivo. El programa se enfoca de manera integral e intersectorial, no solo desde el punto de vista de la educación sino también a través de programas de salud, nutrición y otros proyectos sociales”, puntualizó la autoridad edil.

El proceso de preselección de supervisores y facilitadores estuvo a cargo de la especialista de la UGEL Ascope, Jannet Ruiz Rodríguez; de la sectorista adjunta del PRONAMA, Sonia Rodríguez Fernández y de la alcaldesa de Chicama, Mirtha Sánchez Zafra. Al término de la capacitación de tres días se designará, en estricto orden de méritos, a los ciudadanos que se encuentren en capacidad de desarrollar las labores del programa por las que recibirán una gratificación monetaria.

"I used to sit there and think, 'Why does everything that tastes good have to be bad for you? Why can't I love butter?' I love spaghetti and meat sauce, and I love doughnuts and candy and chocolate and buttered popcorn -- all those things that are sinful. As I've gotten more wise and savvy about being healthy, I've realized that you don't have to give up any of these things. If you're just a little smart and a little creative, you can have all the things you really love. You just have to learn to prepare them in a really healthy way."

To all those men and women out there who have yo yo dieted for years, lost and then gained again, and falsely think they'll never have the body they dream for... have faith -- you can have the healthy and gorgeous physique you want. I am proof that you can get healthy and fit at any age! I am nearly 45 years old and am in the best shape of my life. It was not always this way -- I was a chubby kid and battled my weight in the most critical and hyper sensitive years as a teenager. But I made a decision and that is what it came down to.. a decision to simply change that!

When I am asked for advice on staying fit, I keep it really simple and really plain. There are no fancy or weird diets, no crazy fasting, certainly no diet pills and zero attention to the "ideal" weight as dictated by some universal weight chart!

To stay fit for me, there are simply five jewels to live by:

• 1. Acceptance first! Accept the body you have! Accept the height you have and the body shape you have -- simply put -- you were born you with the equipment you have -- decide to make the best of it and be proud of it! This requires a change in attitude! Stop saying to yourself constantly, "I hate my thighs," "I am too short," "I hate my skinny legs," I don't like this or that about me.." We all do it. Stop it! And decide to work with what God gave you and make you the best you can be. The negative dialogue is a sure bet way to repeatedly sabotage you and keep you in a place where you feel badly about your body! Acceptance is the first key to success. I used to hate my muscular legs -- before Beyonce and Tina Turner and JLO, muscular legs were not the in thing--being skinny and tall was the only criteria in the magazines for beauty. Nonsense! It took me a long time to realize that each and everyone of us was born with our own magic and package -- accept it and make it the best it can possibly be -- Because when you do this and stop comparing yourself to ideals that don't really exist or have relevance to you, you can start appreciating what you have and then you will have the desire to take better care of yourself.

  Real and inner Confidence comes not from trying to be someone you are not -- trying to fit into size six shoes when you are clearly a size nine... real confidence comes from making decisions that are truly good for you, making decisions to take care of the you, you are. When you embrace the body God gave you, then you can do all in your power to make it the healthiest and most fit body it can be--and this self care and attention makes you feel you are doing all you can with what you got and that is sexy! Being beautiful and sexy has little to do with body size or the size of any part of your body...it has everything to do with an inner confidence that screams--"This is me--I dig it and am taking care of myself because I am in fact worth it!" That is the sexiest attitude you can have and one that spills out from your soul when you dedicate yourself to being all you can be.

  I spent a lot of time on this first step because it is critical to success! Change your mind about your body -- accept what you have and be smart enough to put all you've got into taking care of yourself! Everyday say to yourself--" this is the body God gave me! I'm going to be the best me I can be today--I will not compare myself to anyone else-- there is only one me -- I am unique and distinct and I'm going to do the best with what I've got! And that is enough! That is good enough!

• 2. Step two! Once you have your mind set -- make a decision to commit yourself to some kind of exercise everyday! Like brushing your teeth -- you must move your body! All studies show exercise is the key to fitness -- I don't care if you walk for thirty minutes a day, stretch your muscles, do yoga, pilates, take an aerobics class, hike, play tennis, watch a fitness tape.. do something! I am not one to stay in the gym and work out for the sake of looking a certain way. Gyms to me are really boring! I am a lover of the outdoors and run as much as I can in the hills of Los Angeles. I started out with one mile a day and worked up to five to seven miles and love it! But not everyone is a runner. But there is out there an exercise that is right for you and the important thing is to stay in touch with your body everyday.. work it out in some way, stretch it, keep it limber, keep it toned-- get a fitness regimen into your daily life just as you incorporate brushing your teeth everyday into your routine! For me to tell you what I do to stay fit, is beside the point -- I run every day, do light arm weights three times a week and one hundred situps a day and do pilates three times a week. That is what is right for me. Nothing fanatical just consistent. Find what is right for you. Some experts say you need 30 minutes a day -- others say one hour a day to really get into fat burning. I say just move your body -- commit to everyday doing some form of exercise that gets your heart rate up and strengthens, lengthens and tones your muscles. Simple as that -- just commit to doing something everyday to make your body fit and strong and healthy! Because when you do this, you are connecting your mind and heart with your body -- you are feeling your body everyday-- working out the kinks, stretching it and staying in tune with it -- to be aware of your body inspires you to want to take care of it more -- so step two is another decision -- a decision to keep your body tuned up everyday. I know the pitfalls. I too can be tired, lazy, feel depressed and decide to skip a day. But then I always remember it should be like brushing your teeth -- it's just part of your daily routine. Even if it's lying on the floor and stretching for half an hour -- walking around the neighborhood after work... doing exercises with your kids so you can combine family time with the exercise you need -- whatever works for you and your particular body -- make a decision to find that right routine and to stick to it everyday. Surely you are worth a minimal of thirty minutes a day on your beautiful body -- it's a decision--a dedication that requires determination to treat yourself with care and respect and responsibility. When you do, your confidence builds -- you know you are taking care of yourself from the inside out -- and believe me, it shows and makes a huge difference in your life... not just because your body craves it and benefits by it... not just because it can make you fit into those tight jeans or pretty dress, but because it allows you to tune into yourself and the physical body you live in everyday and make sure the house you live in is sound and strong and taken care of. When you take care of yourself, you build self esteem, you appreciate self effort and the benefits that come from it. When we take care of ourselves, we have so much more room to share and care and be open and loving to others.
• 3. Diet. Once you have made the decisions to accept your body and commit to some physical activity once a day -- combine that with a clean, organic and healthy diet that is right for you and stick to it! Once again, I will tell you how I eat, but this may not be right for you -- what is important, is that you find out what is right for you, what your goals are and then to stick to it! Sticking to a regimen you know is right for you...inspires discipline and commitment and phenomenal results -- you look better, feel better and have so much more energy when you eat right for you!

  Here is my basic and simple diet that I stick to at least five or six days a week. It's really simple...

  For breakfast -- I eat egg whites with one piece of multigrain toast -- a fruit, a cup of coffee with nonfat milk or two percent. I sometimes have a bowl of cereal and a fruit or sometimes have two regular eggs with toast. I eat my only starch in the morning. I have numerous fun recipes for morning egg white meals but for most mornings when I'm on the go, a toast and egg white omelet is my favorite breakfast!

  For lunch -- again really basic -- I have a salad with grilled chicken with olive oil and vinegar.. with salmon or tuna -- Or I have a protein with vegies -- I don't care if there is a little margarine on the vegies..and I don't order my dressing on the side. I just eat a normal salad or protein and vegie meal like chicken or beef or lamb or fish with a salad or vegie. I avoid bread at lunch.. if I want a sandwich, I'll use a lettuce wrap- If I know I'm going to lunch and want starch, then I'll skip my bread or cereal in the morning, have just the eggs or fruit and decide to eat my starch during lunch instead.

  For dinner -- I eat protein and vegies again in a variety of ways and try and avoid butter, creams and sauces unless made really healthy. I eat a fruit as a snack if I'm hungry.. sometimes a handful of almonds or walnuts for energy or a handful of cranberries from Trader Joe's.

  

  That is how I eat almost every day. But I don't believe in anything fanatical! It never works. On the weekends I will have a dirty martini when going out, I will have that delicious pasta dinner and on Saturday night, I might in fact indulge in that sinful chocolate cake. I want to live and enjoy and constant denying yourself of the yummy pleasures is a sure bet way to failure! So have it once a week -- reward yourself at the end of a week with that meal you really crave.. and then the next day.. go right back on your healthy eating plan.

  When people say this is too rigid for them -- I say it works for me. Find what works for you and stick to it. One thing I know for sure from all my years of crazy dieting.. the only thing that works no matter what you chose is something that is truly healthy for you, and being consistent with it everyday. Consistent exercise, consistent way of eating and consistent mind set that taking care of what you've got, is essential for getting fit, staying fit and having a healthy attitude about your body and the way you care for it.

• 4. The fourth jewel in the crown of staying healthy is to find ways to reward yourself every week for your hard work -- set a goal to fit into that dress -- to increase your endurance, to hike up to the top of that mountain-- goals you set for no other reason other than to challenge yourself and give yourself something to strive for always that makes you more healthy and fit. The goal in my mind is never to look like someone else -- never to be a certain weight or size -- it really isn't! My goal is not all about outside looks-- that is way too damaging -- being perfect is not possible because perfect is relative not to mention boring -- make little goals and then make sure to reward yourself with a little treat that only you know has value for you.
• 5. Lastly, but most important -- be bold baby, be bold! Be bold enough to take care of yourself -- be proud of who you are and to strut your stuff with pride and ownership! Be bold enough to get your body into fit and fabulous shape -- the best you are capable of for you, and then get out in the world and be bold -- challenge yourself in other ways... Try something new -- dare to stretch into the life you want to lead -- put yourself out there and dare to fail -- dare to succeed.. dare not to limit your ways of thinking about yourself or what you can do. I don't care what age you are, how heavy or thin you are, what your past has been about, what I care about is your future -- all you have learned, the wisdom and life lessons that you and only you embody.. and dare to make your mark -- your way! Don't compromise your dreams -- don't sell yourself short. Believe in yourself -- don't silence or diminish your dreams or hopes. Be bold and take the strategy for staying fit and apply it to your whole life! You have a unique gift that is yours alone to give to the world -- be bold baby -- and think of your soul as an acorn -- the seed of destiny within you that has all the magic to become a mighty oak -- be bold.

** One last note.. be forgiving of yourself... this is the ideal... we all falter...the trick is to get right back to our regimen as consistently as possible after we fall.... it's all a decision simple as that.

** And to my Latina sisters or anyone who has fuller bodies with delicious curves -- to you I send a special message-- embrace your curves -- embrace your full and beautiful bodies and don't even think about trying to fit into a body shape or size that is not right for you. Commit to getting fit and healthy...and love the body you have!

I was about to wheel my cart past this stranger but instead, stopped in my tracks to affirm her sentiments more for her daughter and mine than anyone else.

'I don't mean to interrupt,' I said, but I overheard what you were saying and I just want to tell you, decency and humanity in our leaders is possible. This election has the opportunity to make it so.'

She smiled and said, 'I think I know who you are supporting; so am I.'

We stood in that produce isle for about 15 minutes with my daughter munching on cool melon pieces and my new friend's daughter listening intently as two strangers became fast friends over shared hopes for our nation.

We railed against the stupidity of Sarah Palin, the ugly lies of the McCain campaign and the passion for this election to right the wrongs of the past eight years. We parted exchanging numbers and saying how nice it was to know we're not alone.

I walked away to the check out thinking how amazing that tiny exchange was. Two moms concerned over what kind of future this country will pave for our daughters, and more to the moment, what they might learn from this shameful display of ugly politics that get you to the White House.

I said to this lovely lady that as a former journalist what disgusts and disappoints most is watching the news 'stars' and teams allow a platform for barbs and mistruths and twists of truth as they use the airwaves to shovel the contrived messaging of the campaigns. God, what has happened to television news? It's a disaster and we have much to repair along with our many other pillars of democracy. It's absolutely shameful how this election is being covered.

On every channel you get a spate of surrogates who are propped up as mouth pieces for the message machines of their campaign. What they blow all over the airwaves doesn't have to have a lick of truth to it, just a solid message stated over and over again no matter its validity.

These folks are given a wide birth to come on and espouse lies and spin. Respectable news organizations are supposed to weed that crap out and hold the messenger accountable for the facts. Instead, the news shows have become game shows where the viewer is left to discern whose spin is most effective as opposed to true. We have to go to the Internet at FactCheck.org to vet the whole thing out and find out who the hell is selling a bill a goods as opposed to who has the goods and is really good inside to be the leader of the free world.

What the McCain camp has done is particularly shameful.  I used to like John McCain. I don't know who the hell he is anymore. He turned over his strategy to the win-at-all-cost Bush whackers and he has sold his soul to the devil in an all out stretch for the White House.

The economic collapse this week at last ripped the headlines away from the Palin farce, thank God, and on to the most critical issue facing our lives -- the economy. And that re-focus has propelled Obama back into the lead in the polls. When you have to stick to the issues and weed out the lies, there is only one road to travel and only one driver, and that is Barack Obama.

McCain's road is a dusty old bridge to nowhere that is tied to the last eight years of Bush, so called wisdom and experience that took us into an unjust war that has taken four thousand lives and counting. His road is paved with the abuses and misuse of power, trust and adherence to the very precepts of democracy that have broken our spirit the last eight years and tarnished our image abroad. Our economy is reaping the colossal failure reflective of an administration asleep at the wheel while millions of Americans are losing their homes, 401Ks, jobs and any ability to afford the basic needs to feed their families and put gas in their cars.

McCain has the nerve to stand up along side his farce of a side kick and try to seriously distance himself from poor judgment not just in his sexist and insulting selection of Palin, but the poor judgment of two decades of service where he is an accomplice to the financial disaster we now face in this country.  He has presided over the most government regulated era I can remember, and with all that supposed oversight, we just witnessed the phenomenal and shattering demise of the titan financial pillars of our economy. McCain is part of the problem. To tout himself an agent or champion of change when he is so inextricably part of the disaster, and was too out of touch to see it coming, is down right absurd.

When McCain called for a new oversight committee to look into this financial disaster, I out right howled. That's what we need, another committee to investigate the ills that lead to collapse. We need solutions, not more committees. We know what lead to this economic melt down, and McCain is on the team that cannot erase his past or complicity in this economic downturn. He is still insisting the 'fundamentals of our economy are sound.' He is fundamentally off his rocker and has been hit in the head with a blunt object if he thinks our economy is sound in any way. We are in a near depression and we are not out of the woods yet.  What we need is a strong mega-dose of truth in Washington. When things hit the bottom in our lives, we have to take stock and get real and then get moving. The time for change is now. Republicans have screwed things up in such a colossal way that there is no painting a smiley face on this portrait. And we do have the brightest, most hopeful choice to make in Barack Obama.

It's not that I agree with him on everything. I don't. But that is not what matters right now. What matters most to me is a solid foundation of decency, true solid judgment and a reverence for our nation's constitution. What matters to me is a leader with true conviction and ability to work with opposing sides and find the common purpose. What's important to me is a leader who will tell the truth and avoids the lies and mud slinging to stay on the issues. We deserve the hard truth now and the best dose of honesty in finding solutions we can trust.

This is a fight between good and evil, and if you think this is just hyperbole, you're wrong. This battle we must win. We cannot allow another four years of the lies, mistruths, broken trusts and financial and moral collapse or our country to continue. We must take our country back. True change is required, and Barack Obama is that leader who has come forth at this most critical hour to be one of history's greatest leaders of all time.

I can only think, despite the chaos of our times and the outrageous and ruthless nature of this campaign, how simple life really is; it all just boils down to having your health, jobs, enough money to buy gas, eggs, milk, bread; enough to send kids to school so they can grow up with the luxury to dream of what they want to be. This is what politics is really about. These are the things Barack speaks of, not whether or not Palin really said 'no thanks' to the Bridge to Nowhere, or had her first dude try and muscle out her ex-brother in law cop.

I just think back to my new friend at the market. Here we were, two moms buying groceries who connect over shared sentiments about politics. We had our daughters with us. Moms with kids buying stuff for dinner, watching our pennies, looking for bargains, worried about our bank accounts. And we connect over politics that will define the way we live the next four years.

After dishing over the absurdity of Palin and the abuses of the Bush Administration, I know what was most important to both of us. Our daughters and their future.

Who do you want them most to emulate from watching these two campaigns? Whose values do you hope they will adopt as their own, as that of their nations? Do we want them to learn lying at all costs to win is right as long as you snatch victory?  Do we want them to learn the power of debate and real exploration of the issues. Do we want them to learn women are truly capable of doing anything they dream or do we want them to see an unqualified woman used for her gender as a token and tactic instead of the right reasons of having true leadership abilities? Do we want our children to believe in a country where all its citizens have access to health care and education? Do we want them to believe that integrity matters? Do we want them to emulate decency, compassion and telling the truth?

When I loaded the car with bags and clicked my girl into her car seat, I noticed a college student getting out of her car. On the window she had a hand drawn sign in multi colors that read, 'Obama for President, A Human Being in the White House? What a concept.'

What a concept indeed.

I had promised not to waste another angry second on that gleeful moose killer/one time hockey mom and the Right's merry marionette from Alaska, as I refused to fuel the flames of stupidity and lend her any more unwarranted credibility by even discussing her absurd placement on the national stage.  But tonight I just couldn't contain myself. Sarah Palin's incredulous interview with Katie Couric was just too juicy a train wreck to let go by without any scrumptious picking of the bones.

In short, Palin was painful. The news nuts couldn't even bring themselves to say much -- nothing needed to be said -- it was that dumb.

On the subject of Russia and its proximity to Alaska, Couric, with a straight face, asked Palin how this proximity in any way gives her the foreign policy  credentials she boasts. Palin earnestly replied that when Russia takes to the air and thinks of the United States, Alaska is right there, and therefore you see, puts Alaska in that special position. They share air space. And yes we do and have had trade missions. As executive of the state of Alaska, these duties are on her big roster. It went something like that and it was totally absurd. Oh my god, I thought, they've let the worms go free -- the lid is off and little Mrs. Sunshine just eclipsed herself at last and shined a big dark cloud on McCain.

On the subject of Israel it got even juicier.  Couric asked if the U.S. should ever second guess Israel in matters of security. Palin said 'no' and then 'yes' and then 'no because we don't want another Holocaust for one, and we don't want to entice Iran either.' She spoke of good guys and bad guys and sounded like Bush with broccoli. I felt like I was watching a political version of 'Fargo,' the movie where Francis just chucked that fella McCain into the wood chipper.

Obviously all her handlers were called on deck to get a handle on this economic crisis in Washington, and Palin un-plugged, lost some that icky charm she's been oozing over her desperate devotees hungry for any reason to anoint McCain. Bad, bad move and even worse timing to let the moose loose now as she shows the world she's a real earnest Bozo.

Yeah, she 'energized' the Right for a couple of weeks, but when real disaster hit and real people realized government again was about to sock it to 'em big time in the gut where it aches, Palin paled and failed to further distract voters from the economy and the big show McCain tried to pull off in Washington.  While all eyes were on the Capitol and all focus on the economic bail-out, Palin blew up her thinly veiled facade and proved for sure she was McCain's first really bad decision.

Watching Palin and the meetings with the President in D.C. was such a bizarre juxtaposition. All I could think of was Chauncey the Gardener from the movie 'Being There.'  He spoke of the seasons and the soil and those who listened and became devotees, projected genius into his supposed metaphors for the economy. But he was just a simple gardener. Lipstick or not, that chick from Alaska is a small town girl with an oversized ego and has no business being a heartbeat away from making the vital critical decisions on digging out of economic collapse, much less war or anything else.

It's so surreal to see the stark duality of real crisis and the contrived crimes of politics side by side. It just seems criminal at a time like this.

We have no business considering or even talking about a Palin when you look at what is unraveling around us. This is no time for dumb politics.

McCain trying to politicize this economic crisis at the meeting with the President, trying to duck out of the debate, is all just a big bad dance when we should be doing everything possible to correct the fix we're in, and not just for Wall Street, but for Main Street as well.

Ten-thousand people a day are losing their homes and will not get any relief from this supposed bail- -- no bankruptcy bill has been passed to ease their pain -- no bail-out for the little guy.  It's too complicated for many of us average folks to put our arms around the largess of this crisis. We can barely save our homes or buy gas or keep our jobs or get jobs, much less figure out whether it is fair or right or absolutely necessary to cut a check for seven-hundred-billion. So what we need in this time of need are really fricken smart people at the helm we can trust to guide us and help us make the right decision, not just for right now, but for our kids and their kids down the line.

This is when you really get it that it's not just the economy that's broken, our sacred trust in smart, decent leaders is broken.  So we are left in the lurch in time of real need.  Instead of trusting our leaders to get it right on our behalf, we have to worry if they're being straight or just 'political.' Are they using, manipulating, twisting the scenario to favor their party's candidate, or are they watching out for the little guy?  This is the real crisis -- the crisis in confidence --  and an inability to trust Washington or Wall Street to do right by its people.

Time to put 'politics' aside and get real. McCain better get his bad ass self to Mississippi for that debate. We the people have a right and a need to see who we can trust, whose got the goods, the character, the ability to grasp this crisis and get us out of it.  Barack Obama will be there

A día de hoy no existe patinador en el mundo que no sepa de España, pero aunque Barcelona y sus spots han hecho mucho al respecto, sin la proyección internacional de patinadores como Jesús, no seríamos más que unos planos inclinados ante los ojos del resto de patinadores del mundo. Jesús es muy bueno patinando y su conducta y forma de ser son tan intachables, que no se me ocurre el motivo por el cual no deberíamos volcarnos en apoyarlo. Politicas y políticos asturianos, si algo es preocupante en la región, es la apolitización constante de la población, por la falta de estímulos de los políticos, y la repetición de caras legislatura tras legislatura, y que si bien, a los partidos mayoritarios como los que ustedes dos representan, no les importa. La masa social que llevan detrás les da seguridad suficiente de un resultado positivo, pero a ALTERNATIVA, le preocupa. No por nuestro resultado electoral, si no, por ese gran segmento de población que ha decidido pasar de la política. Quizá existan pocos políticos asturianos a los que la jubilación no les viniera bien.

Dejen paso, a nuevas ideas, a nuevas personas, a la juventud, porque la ciudad es de todos, no de ustedes solas, ni de dos partidos solos.

La municipalidad distrital de Chicama y la Liga de Fútbol de este distrito, conjuntamente con una escuela de fútbol de Pacasmayo organizaron y llevaron a cabo un campeonato deportivo entre equipos de fútbol de menores de ambas localidades. Juan Montero Fernández, regidor de la comuna chicamera explicó que el objetivo de estos eventos es fomentar el interés por el deporte. “Un evento similar se llevó a cabo el año pasado, en esta oportunidad estamos cumpliendo con el cronograma de actividades planteado por la municipalidad distrital de Chicama a favor de niños y jóvenes del distrito”, subrayó el regidor Montero.

Participaron en esta contienda deportiva el equipo de la escuela de fútbol de la municipalidad de Chicama, en Fútbol 7, categoría Sub 10; y el “Alma Roja” de Chiclín en la categoría Sub 12, los que se enfrentaron a sus similares de de la escuela de fútbol “Semillero Pacasmayino”. En el primer encuentro, el equipo chicamero cayó frente al mejor fútbol de los pacasmayinos por 4 goles a 3, mientras que en el partido de fondo, “Alma Roja” de Chiclín y el representante de “Semillero Pacasmayino” compartieron honores al empatar a cuatro tantos por lado.

El presidente de la Liga de Fútbol de Chicama, Julio Carpio Moya, demandó mayor apoyo al deporte por parte de las autoridades e instituciones, por el bien de la juventud. “Hacemos este evento, gracias a la amistad con entusiastas dirigentes del balompié pacasmayino con quienes realizamos las coordinaciones. A través del regidor Juan Montero Fernández pedí el apoyo de la municipalidad de Chicama y hemos tenido eco por lo que agradecemos a la alcaldesa, Mirtha Sánchez Zafra”, señaló el presidente de la liga de fútbol de Chicama.

Le championnat de France est un des plus faibles d'Europe même si Canal + met 63 caméras autour de la pelouse, qu'on y voit même les doryphores copuler entre deux brins d'herbe et les crampons de nos mignons préférés; le championnat espagnol est plus fort; le calcio est plus fort; "la première league" est plus forte et c'est rien de le dire, le Portugal avec sa filière brésilienne arrive toujours à placer des clubs en coupe d'Europe, l'Allemagne n'a pas un championnat, à priori, passionnant mais a au moins un club qui se hisse régulièrement en finale, voir les gagne; à l'Est, rien de nouveau, dirait Erich Maria Remarque (ah non lui, c'était à l'Ouest) et bien si, ils ont gagné la coupe de l'UEFA...toujours là et on ne peut pas dire qu'ils aient les meilleures conditions du monde; championnat décalés because of the weather, etc.

La faute à qui alors et bien, à l'argent, peut-être, sûrement un peu mais le Zenith de Saint-Petersbourg dopé au Gazprom a certes des moyens mais pas forcément plus que des clubs français. J'avoue que j'y perd mon latin, on dit toujours qu'on a pas de pétrole mais des idées, il serait peut-être temps de les sortir du chapeau ces idées et puis en causer à Miguel notre bon président de l'UEFA, voir ce qui l'en pense.

Pourtant, je le trouve presque sympa ce championnat cette année, Paris aurait un semblant de renouveau malgré les innombrables critiques : club de retraités, maison de retraite, je trouve que c'est plutôt bien de revoir quelques gloires rejouer en France; Bordeaux semble avoir fait des bons choix; Marseille pète le feu pour alimenter le suspens en début de saison, Nantes est remonté dans l'élite, même si le jeu à la nantaise semble être un vague souvenir, ils sont là et pas encore redescendu et Lyon est toujours là même si on attend un recrutement un peu plus flamboyant svp.

Et l'équipe de France, ah, en voilà un sujet chaud bouillant, bon alors là, faut pas hésiter, tirons tous sur Domenech à boulets rouge. Mais en parlant de boulet, je ne suis pas sûr que ce soit le pire, même si c'est vrai que dans la situation actuelle, il faudrait peut-être qu'il arrête avant que ces protégés finissent par regarder la coupe du monde à la télé dans deux ans. On voulait Mexès, il a mis Mexès mais doit bien rigoler en son fort intérieur, mais au moins, le père Philippe va peut-être redescendre sur terre et comprendre qu'on a beau jouer en Italie, la bière, le schnapps et l'escalope viennoise sont plus difficiles à digérer que les raviolis du lundi !

Les explications à ce drame national, et bien premièrement, il faut peut-être se dire qu'on a mangé notre pain blanc et que la génération dorée qui nous a apporté des titres et des finales pendant 10 ans était une justement une génération dorée et qu'un Zidane en France, c'est comme un Maradona en Argentine, il en naît pas un tous les 10 ans, c'est tout.

Et deuxièmement, si Domenech s'en va, alors pourquoi pas les dirigeants des instances du football avec leur grande expérience du haut niveau : Escalette et son conseil fédéral de truffes dans lequel ne siège aucun ancien international ou entraîneur mais qui fixe des objectifs à Domenech; Je vous laisse juger ses réponses lors de l'interview de Luis Fernandez le 3 juillet dernier sur RMC  : CLIQUEZ ICI, c'est époustouflant, comment voulez-vous qu'avec un flan pareil, la FFF soit crédible !

Alors, il faut changer les hommes et bien : je propose Jean-Michel Larqué, l'homme qui critique plus vite que son ombre et devient tout vert parce que Saint-Etienne perd 1-0 contre Lyon : c'est tout de même pas honteux de perdre 1-0 contre le club qui domine le championnat de France depuis des années. Lui qui s'en prend au staff technique de Saint-Etienne et au pauvre Luc Sonor qui n'a rien demandé et est là depuis juin : il a fait le jubilé de Roger Milla, lui, Monsieur et on touche pas aux hommes qui aiment Roger, notre lion indomptable à nous !

Lui qui tire sur Domenech, il n'a qu'à y allait et nous montrer comment il faut coacher avec sa grande expérience parisienne en 77-78 au PSG et au RC Paris en 81-82 : pensez donc !

Je t'aime bien Jean-Michel mais redescend un peu sur terre 5 minutes...

Bon, conclusion, s'il fallait un peu d'air frais sur le terrain mais attention au courant d'air...il en faudrait un peu en coulisse aussi, là voilà la conclusion et la presse ferait bien d'aller demander des comptes à Escalette plutôt que de s'acharner sur Domenech, cette même presse qui s'acharnait sur Jacquet il y a quelques années et qui aujourd'hui nous pond des articles pour nous expliquer les choses en 5 matchs clé sans même évoquer une seule fois les dirigeants : paye ton journalisme ! > CLIQUEZ ICI POUR VOIR LE BOULOT

No queremos finalizar la semana sin mostrar nuestra felicitación pública a las nuevas delegadas de la Junta de Andalucía en Málaga: Remedios Martel (Medio Ambiente), Blanca Sillero (Justicia y Administración Pública), y Dolores Fernández (Obras Públicas y Transportes), una apuesta política que no sólo responde a un perfil profesional admirable de cada una de ellas para las áreas que han ocupado tras este nombramiento sino que pone a Málaga a la cabeza de Andalucía en materia de igualdad con la mujer en el espectro político.

Esta felicitación queremos que sea extensible a todos los demás delegados que han sido ratificados en sus respectivos cargos, especialmente a Josefa López Pérez como nueva titular de Vivienda y Ordenación del Territorio por el estrecho vínculo que mantiene con esta Agrupación tras la puesta en marcha del Plan Integral para Palma-Palmilla. Desde este espacio queremos que la nueva titular de Vivienda sepa que esta Agrupación seguirá trabajando como hasta ahora por la consecución del Plan Integral, aportando el esfuerzo y conocimiento de este distrito y de los colectivos con los que mantiene relación así como trasladando hacia los ciudadanos de Palma-Palmilla los objetivos de este ambicioso plan y haciéndoles partícipes del mismo.

Todo ello para mejorar la calidad de vida de las personas que vivimos y trabajamos por este distrito con el fiel compromiso de que, al margen de tendencias políticas o ideologías, Palma-Palmilla se merece salir del lugar donde se le ha obligado a estar por el abandono institucional que ha padecido en estos últimos años.

Los Nenes, de Patricio Fernández. Se escucha la polvadera. La segunda novela del fundador de The Clinic la publica Anagrama, lo que para algunos significa calidad. No es tan así, pero a quién no le viene bien que Jorge Herralde le tienda una mano. Más importante que eso es la trama: Germán Marín bautizó como "los nenes" a su círculo literario. Su pandilla. Sus protegidos. Sus guardaespaldas. Según él, ahí están -o estaban- el propio Fernández, Matías Rivas, Roberto Merino, Andrés Claro, Rafael Gumucio, Francisco Mouat y Alejandro Zambra. Con los nombres levemente cambiados, Los Nenes se trata de ese grupo. Y especialmente de Marín, que aparentemente se desdobla en dos personajes: Carlos Iribarren y Gastón Miranda. Por lo que sé, a un par de los retratados nos les hizo mucha gracia. En librerías la tercera semana de septiembre.

Synco, de Jorge Baradit. El crédito local de la ciencia ficción se mete en la historia chilena usando el estilo tradicional del género: ucronía. El autor de Ygradrasil y Trinidad, deforma la historia real de Synco, un proyecto ideado por Fernando Flores durante la Unidad Popular. El plan era grande: un sistema tecnológico que permitiera mantener conectado a Chile. ¿Un antecedente de internet? Algo así. Por supuesto, el proyecto no funcionó. Y el golpe del 73 lo congeló para siempre. En la ficción de Baradit, Synco tuvo éxito y Chile se transformó en un país, ya no socialista, sino tecnologizado. Un ejemplo de vanguardia. No hubo golpe. Allende sigue en la presidencia en 1978, Altamirano es un carismático lider de la disidencia y Pinochet -quien fuera un "héroe del pueblo"- está a punto de salir de su vida tranquila y retirada de la contingencia. El Fotógrafo de Dios, de Marcelo Simonetti. Esto es verdad: el único fotógrafo chileno que ha pertenecido a las filas de la poderosa y legendaria agencia Magnum hoy vive como un ermitaño en el Valle del Limarí. Fue uno de los protegidos de Cartier Bresson, retrató a la mafia siciliana, fotografió Valparaíso de la mano de Neruda y en los 70 dejó la cámara. Hoy muy pocos saben de él, excepto su familia. Se llama Sergio Larraín y es algo así como el Salinger chileno. Simonetti no se resistió a la historia. El autor de La Traición de Borges relata la búsqueda de un fotógrafo chileno perdido, no exactamente  Larraín, pero similar a él. La leyenda, en la ficción es que pudo fotografíar a Dios. Vía Norma. En librerías la primera semana de octubre.

Vida en Marte, de Alvaro Bisama. Entiendo que no se trata del título definitivo, pero ese fue el nombre que usó el autor de Caja Negra al participar en el Premio Herralde de Novela. Quedó seleccionado en la lista larga. El juego es ficcionar la historia de un pintor chileno perteneciente a las vanguardias famoso en el mundo entero, que trajó muchos hijos al mundo. Sí, Matta. Esa es la partida. Bisama no se queda sólo en los datos reales, inventa una serie de historias alternativas a partir de los hijos del pintor. Asumo que estarán las dosis pop de siempre. Vía Emecé.
