Un par de orates se abre paso en el mercado musical estadounidense.

Breaking up hurts. But if you live in California, Arizona, or New York you can write your own breakup song, then make a video about it in the self-contained recording studios that are launching in malls across the country. When you're finished with your video, you can upload it to Mystudio.net. Who knows, you could land a recording contract or a reality show based on your efforts. Our favorite breakup video is by Flight of the Conchords from their HBO show. You gotta laugh even when it hurts.

A stream of consciousness story told in video.

A stream of consciousness story told in video.

Yesterday I was lamenting on Twitter the geo-blocking on TVNZ's OD service. Back home I'm missing the [re]debut of my sister, Narelle Ahrens, as Nurse Bernadette Hamblyn on Shortland Sreet :-(

Social PRobiotic, reminded of my kiwiness, then told me to watch the new Air New Zealand advert currently on YouTube.

I liked it, but it doesn't touch my fave NZ ad from a few years ago. This from L&P showcases how funny we can be when do that thing where we just laugh at ourselves (while secretly getting very very upset if you say one mean thing about our beloved country).

Listening to the ad again, the voice sounds suspiciously like Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords. Then I had a thought - now wouldn't that be the perfect brand partnership for Air NZ!! NZ comedians + international audience + name related to flying = Advertising dream, no?

To try and round off this whole ramble, I discovered this old video of Jemaine AND my sis from cult hit Tongan Ninja. Now I don't mean to perpetuate the myth that all NZers know each other it's just, as Air New Zealand says, a kiwi thing.

[And she is gonna freakin' kill me].

Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement (aka Flight of the Conchords) won 4 well deserved awards for their brilliant self-titled album. You must have a look here at their acceptance speeches.

Funny stuff! But then dats how dey roll, eh?

I am sad however, well devestated actually, that The Phoenix Foundation didn't get their props (however they were in the same category as Flight of the Conchords for two of the awards so it would have been a bit difficult for both groups to win!). Lee Preeble did win two awards, one for Best Producer and another for Best Engineer for The Phoenix Foundation album Happy Ending, so it wasn't a total loss. :-)

For a full list of the winners in all the categories go here. (Thanks to Owen's Valley's very own Tomatohead for this bit of info).

Unghh
Girl tonight we’re gonna make love
You know how I know?
Because it’s Wednesday
And Wednesday night is the night that we usually make love
Tuesday night is the night that we usually go to your mother’s place and I teach
her how to use the video machine again
But Wednesday night is the night that we make love
It’s when everything is just right
You’re not too tired from your afterwork social netball team practice
There’s nothing good on TV.
Mmmmm…
Conditions are perfect for making love.
You turn to me and say something sexy like, “I might go to bed. I’ve got work in
the morning.”
I know what you’re trying to say, baby.
You’re trying to say “Aww, yeah. It’s business time.”
It’s business
It’s business time
I know what you’re trying to say
You’re trying to say it’s time for business
It’s business time
Ooh
It’s business
It’s business time
Aww aww yeah yeah
The next thing you know we’re in the bathroom brushing our teeth
That’s all part of it, that’s foreplay.
Foreplay is very important in love making
Then you go sort out the recycling
Which isn’t part of the foreplay, but it’s still very important
That’s not foreplay, but it’s still very important.
Then next thing you know we’re in the bedroom
You’re wearin’ that same old ugly, baggy T-shirt with a stain on it that you got
from that team-building exercise you did for your old work several years ago
“Team Building Exercise ‘99”.
I take off my clothes
But I trip over my jeans ‘cause I’m still wearing my shoes

But it’s okay because I turn it all into a sexy dance.
The next thing you know I’m wearing absolutely nothing
Except for my socks
And you know when I’m down to my socks what time it
It’s business time
It’s business
It’s business time
When I’m down to my socks it’s time for business
That’s why they’re called business socks
Ooh
It’s business
It’s business time
Aww aww yeah yeah
Making love
Making love for
Makin love for two
Making love for two minutes
When it’s with me, you only need two minutes, girl
‘Cause I’m so intense
Two minutes in heaven is better than one minute in heaven
You turn to me and say something sexy like, “Is that it?”
I know what you’re trying to say, girl
You’re trying to say, “Aw yeah, that’s it”
And then you tell me you want some more
Well, uh…
I’m not surprised
But I am quite sleepy
Mmm
It’s business
It’s business time
Business hours are over, baby
It’s business
It’s business time

But I was struck by v1:
King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh's daughter—Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites.

It has been unashamedly lifted by the Flight of the Conchords in their song - "Ladies of the World".

Lost

Entourage

Dexter

Life

Battlestar Galactica

Dr. Who

South Park

Real Time with Bill Maher

Die nächsten paar habe ich ebenfalls lieb gewonnen :-) und werde sie deshalb weiterhin verfolgen, allerdings mit weniger Priorität, sporadisch und nicht mehr sofort:

Heroes

House

Chuck

Scrubs

The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson

30 Rock

The Big Bang Theory

Family Guy

Extras

Nip/Tuck

The Sarah Connor Chronicles

How I Met Your Mother

The Simpsons

Reaper

Raising The Bar

In Plain Sight

Torchwood

My Name Is Earl

Little Britain

Shark

Two And A Half Men

Smallville

Californication

How Not To Live Your Life

Knight Rider 2008

American Dad

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

I've been crushing on Jemaine Clement of Flight of the Conchords for over a year now and in the last few days it's gotten really, really bad. I can't stop watching the music clips on youtube, I'm obsessed. And what do I do with my obsessions, but foist them on you, my innocent readers?

What is it about him, you ask? Well, he is gorgeous, in my opinion, but what really gets me is his sense of humor and willingness to do ANYTHING, including making himself look ridiculous, to make people laugh. That trait reflects my own philosophy with regard to humor. WhatEVER makes people laugh, I do that shit.

If you haven't watched Flight of the Conchords, do yourself a favor and check out these videos. If you like them, there are plenty more on youtube.

On June 1st, I went with friends to see the amazing and talented Flight of the Conchords. I am usually a very hard critic to please, but I have nothing but great things to say about these two, and may I say handsome, men. Their show started at 8 pm at the Orphium Theatre in Los Angeles and went on until 11:28pm which is a lengthy in comparison for comedians. I wish I could share videos of the show on here with you, but the theatre asked that we not take videos or pictures and I respected that. Fortunatly, some individuals didn't hear the memo and posted clips of the performance on youtube which I suggest everyone to check out. All I can say is if you ever get a chance to see them live, and can beat the scalpers to tickets, go see them! You will be laughing all night, and it is perfect for both mature men and women for a wonderful show even if you don't usually see comedy acts. Look for them on youtube as well as HBO with their self titled show.

OUT

Two blondes watch their TiVo and pass judgment on the world of television and the Emmy winners.

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES
Winner: "Mad Men"

JESSICA CHOOSES:
“Mad Men” - I was very torn with this one. "Lost" is one of my all-time favorite TV shows and pretty much any other year, it would be my choice. However, "Mad Men" is truly outstanding and "Lost" has already won this award. Therefore, I'm going with "Mad Men."

P.S. "Friday Night Lights" should have gotten a nomination in this category. Seriously, some of the best programming on TV. "Boston Legal" can't even carry the shoes (or should I say cleats...get it? Because they're a football team...cleats) of "Friday Night Lights."

ALISON CHOOSES:
"Mad Men" - I was very happy "Mad Men" won. But I wish that there could have been a tie between "Lost," "Mad Men" and "Dexter." Those are the three shows that both my TiVo and I worship. I also think "Breaking Bad" should have been nominated.

P.S. I am aware Jessica’s cleats joke is a pun, thus the lowest form of comedy, but it makes her giggle at her own cleverness every time she reads it. Sorry readers.

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES
Winner: "30 Rock"

JESSICA CHOOSES:
“30 Rock” - If I haven't yet made my love of all things Tina Fey-related known, then let me proclaim it now. Tina, I would give up my Sandwich Day-sandwich for you. This show is simply sublime. Episode 210 and Sandwich Day are some of the funniest things I've ever seen on TV. If you're not watching this show, I'm not sure we can be friends.

ALISON CHOOSES:
I agree with Jessica and that is why we can be friends. And if you're someone who has no idea what "Werewolf Bar Mitzvah" is, then I feel sorry for you and think you should take a serious look at your life and your taste in television.

Speaking of taste or lack of, is "Entourage" actually worthy of even being in this category? I'll admit I enjoyed this show the first two seasons, but it's not funny anymore. It's starting to feel douchey at this point.

To the fans of "Two and a Half Men" who helped get it nominated,
Really?
Alison

OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Winner: Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad")

JESSICA CHOOSES:
Kyle Chandler ("Friday Night Lights"). Yes, I realize the academy did not even nominate him, but that is not stopping me from giving him the award.

ALISON CHOOSES:
Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad") I actually furiously clapped when Bryan Cranston won, despite sitting in an apartment with four other people (who were not clapping). I love this show and am constantly surprised and impressed with his performance in it. But if the world were a more magical place full of rainbows and unicorns (like it is in my head), I would also give an award to Michael C. Hall for "Dexter" and Jon Hamm for "Mad Men." I would also give Jon Hamm some kind of award for being kind enough to go with Regis Philbin to surprise his wife, Joy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHctRh8pY9Y

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Winner: Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock")

JESSICA CHOOSES:
Steve Carell ("The Office") - He manages to show the heart of a character that in anyone else's hands, might just seem like a dolt.

ALISON CHOOSES:
Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock") and co-winners Jermaine Clement and Bret McKenzie ("The Flight of the Conchords") – Alec Baldwin deserves to have Emmys coming out of his ass for what he does on "30 Rock." There's no question about that. But I'd also be super happy if Jermaine and Bret got a little notice for their wonderfully hilarious and original show.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Winner: Glenn Close ("Damages")

JESSICA CHOOSES:
Connie Britton ("Friday Night Lights") - Again, I know she wasn't nominated and I know the women who were nominated have either won the award before or are big movie actresses, but I feel very comfortable saying Connie Britton is better in FNL than any of them.

ALISON CHOOSES:
Kyra Sedgwick ("The Closer") – I have to admit I haven't watched "Friday Night Lights," so maybe I would agree with Jessica if I knew otherwise. But I'm a fan of "The Closer" and think Kyra deserves recognition for her work.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Winner: Tina Fey ("30 Rock")

JESSICA CHOOSES:
Tina Fey ("30 Rock") - Did I not make myself clear on this yet? If Tina Fey is eligible for a category, I'm picking her.

ALISON CHOOSES:
Tina Fey ("30 Rock") – Insert constant laughter and joy here.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Winner: Zeljko Ivanek ("Damages")

JESSICA CHOOSES:
Michael Emerson ("Lost") - What I marvel at here is that Michael Emerson is so skillful (with the aid of some pretty amazing writing) that he has not changed the way he plays the character of Ben, yet he has managed to make the audience go from seeing him as a villain to a hero.

ALISON CHOOSES:
Michael Emerson ("Lost") – There has never been a better, more complicated villain than Ben. The writers are due some credit for that, but Michael Emerson always delivers on the material.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Winner: Jeremy Piven ("Entourage")

JESSICA CHOOSES:
Neil Patrick Harris ("How I Met Your Mother") - I would marry him and make lots of adorable, witty babies...if only he weren't gay.

ALISON CHOOSES:
Jack McBrayer ("30 Rock") – If NBC put Kenneth's smiling visage on a pillowcase, I would buy it. There is no other character on TV who gives me the same warm, happy feeling in my tummy as Kenneth does. I feel like he and I would be best friends and warm the world with our positive outlook on life.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Winner: Dianne Wiest ("In Treatment")

JESSICA CHOOSES:
Evangeline Lilly ("Lost") - Admittedly, I'm not sure if she would really be up for this or the lead actress award, but I didn't want to pit her against Connie Britton in my head.

ALISON CHOOSES:
Evangeline Lilly ("Lost") – I'm gonna agree with Jessica.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES

JESSICA CHOOSES:
Jenna Fischer ("The Office")

ALISON CHOOSES:
Kristen Schaal ("The Flight of the Conchords") – She's pure comedy genius in a cute, awkward bottle.

OUTSTANDING REALITY-COMPETITION PROGRAM
Winner: "The Amazing Race"

JESSICA CHOOSES:
"So You Think You Can Dance" - This and "Project Runway" are the only programs in this category where all of the contestants actually have talent and seem to have studied some sort of craft. You can't just walk in off the street, having never done it before, and be a good dancer. "So You Think You Can Dance" is a show tailor-made for me--the dancing, the costumes, my same-sex-non-sexual love for Cat Deely...

ALISON CHOOSES:
"Project Runway" – It's the only reality programming I can stand to watch.

OUTSTANDING VARIETY, MUSIC OR COMEDY SERIES
Winner: "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart"

JESSICA CHOOSES:
"The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" - Come on, like there is any contest here.

ALISON CHOOSES:
"The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” – Agreed.

OUTSTANDING MINISERIES
Winner: "John Adams"

JESSICA CHOOSES:
"Roots" - Um...they still make miniseries? I guess I choose "Roots." That's the last miniseries I saw.

ALISON CHOOSES NOT TO CHOOSE:
They all sounded boring to me.

OUTSTANDING WRITING FOR A DRAMA SERIES:
Winner: "Mad Men"

JESSICA CHOOSES:
"Lost" - I think there is a huge problem with the way this award is set up. Excellent TV writing has to involve both great stand-alone episodes, AND great story arcs that are spread out over a season or more. That fact that they vote on individual episodes only, I feel, can be the only reason that "Lost" hasn't won this award every year since it's been on TV.

ALISON CHOOSES:
"Lost" – Most. Amazing. Show. Ever!

OUTSTANDING WRITING FOR A COMEDY SERIES
Winner: "30 Rock"

JESSICA CHOOSES:
"30 Rock" - You can't be surprised by this at this point.

ALISON CHOOSES:
"30 Rock" - I have six words for you: "Boys becoming men, men becoming wolves."

Oh, John Casey--that single white female would be me.

The story of a big box employee who accidentally uploads a CIA supercomputer into his head, Chuck had an extremely charming first season. With adorable actors crafting lovable characters, silly but fun plots punctuated by cleverly chosen music, and ridiculous jokes, our only concern--other than the less-than-stellar ratings--was that the high-concept setup wouldn't be able to support a long-term show.

The first episode of Season 2, however, seems to suggest that Chuck's creators are aware of these risks, too. The spy plot, while well executed, contributed nothing we haven't seen before, and the typical Buy More antics, while always good for a chuckle, are (happily) more of the same. They even had more brilliant music, using Flight of the Conchords' "Foux du Fafa" to accompany yogurt porn. But floating the possibility that Chuck might be replaced by a new supercomputer provides not only a vision of Chuck's endless potential both in the spy world and spy-free, but also new depth to Adam Baldwin's operative Casey. The idea that Casey has grown to like the nerd he protects has been percolating for a while, and the big streak of humor that finds him apologizing to a photo of Ronald Reagan or eagerly running to watch someone die trying to eat 90 Twinkies has always been part of his appeal. But watching the realization dawn on Casey that killing Chuck is perhaps the kindest thing he can do is the best example yet of our favorite thing about Chuck--its giant heart. They don't have to persuade us to pine for the Beastmaster in the Crown Vic.

I just thought I'd do a search for 2008 in my music collection and got a nice big list of albums I've downloaded this year - a full 31. Have any been worth it? Sure. In no particular order...

Flight of the Conchords - Flight of the Conchords
OK, So I don't know if this really counts - it is essentially just the soundtrack to the first season of their tv show. But the songs are so addictive and unlike any other comedy albums I've listened to on a regular basis - this hasn't turned into one of those annoying gimmicks that need to be skipped the moment it comes on shuffle. Nothing beats a big sing-a-long to 'Business Time'.

R.E.M. - Accelerate
This is the first REM album that I've liked in about 12 years. It completely abandons the kind of soft pop/rock route that had been following for the last decade and instead make their most 'rock and roll' album ever.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!
From one aging 80s rock group to another. This time we move our focus from Athens, Georgia to Australia. There's plenty of stuff by Nick Cave that I don't like. This is one of those albums that just highlight how awesome he can be. Just can't play this album when I'm meant to be doing something... I just get drawn into the lyrics.

DeVotchka - A Mad & Faithful Telling
From the guys that bought you the awesome score of Little Miss Sunshine comes another helping of Eastern European inspired music. This is their most beautiful album yet. Highly recommended for anyone looking for something a bit different.

Destroyer - Trouble In Dreams
For anyone that wishes the New Pornographers would release an album every year. This outing is Dan Bejar's (the guy who writes a couple of songs for each New Pornographers album) solo effort. Very enjoyable.

She & Him - Volume One
This album is one I never expected to be here. This is the combination of that actress Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward. Normally the idea of movie stars trying to use their fame to fulfill their other dream of being a rock star doesn't sit well with me and normally the result is less than spectacular (William Shatner). This album though is a lot of fun. Zooey Deschanel has a unique voice to say the least.

Other albums to possibly make it once I listen to them a bit more.

HBO, god bless it, is trying its best to give me the perfect shows (since the Sopranos, Sex and the City, Six Feet Under) to watch on Sundays...why can't any of them make it to a second season?!

1. Flight of the Conchords - some of the quirkiest humor HBO had ever attempted - of course, I loved it, but I'm not sure anyone watched it except for me. The 'Hip-Hop-A-Potamus' episode was one of the best belly laughs I'd had in a while. Is it ever coming back on, or did they kill it for good?

2. John From Cincinnati - So it was a little odd. What's so scary about odd? It was one of the first shows that was technically about religion (or at least I think it was) that didn't cram it down my throat. The writing was great, the acting was great ... and I miss it like hell already. Let's not forget - they use Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros' "Johnny Appleseed" as the opening them. Could we get any better?

3. True Blood - Humans dating vampires in Louisiana. Good lookin' vampire might I add. And if you get past the somewhat horrible accents (and the fact that none of the main characters are actually from the US) it's a pretty addictive show. Out of the three I've named, it's the only one on TV - but it's the first season, so let's hope HBO doesn't yank it before it has a fan base to stabilize it. (It reminds me of the writing style of Six Feet Under, another HBO great.) The best accent is definitely the Cajun 'Rene' - who, even though he's from Michigan, nails a Cajun accent the best out of any of them.

Think About It

There’s children on the street using guns and knives

Taking drugs and each other’s lives

Killing each other with knives and forks

Calling each other names like ‘dork’

There’s people on the street getting diseases from monkeys

Yeah, that’s what I said - they’re getting diseases from monkeys

Now there’s junkies with monkey disease

Who’s touching these monkeys, please

Leave these poor sick monkeys alone

They’ve got problems enough as it is.

Man’s lying on the street

Some punk’s chopped off his head

I’m the only one who stops

To see if he’s dead

Mmm…

Turns out he’s dead.

And that’s why I’m singing

What…what is wrong with the world today?

What is wrong with the world today?

(Jemaine mumbles)

What…what is wrong with the world today?

You gotta think about it

Think think about it.

Good cops been framed and put into a can.

All the money that we’re making is going to the man.

What man?

Which man?

Who’s the man?

When’s a man a man?

What makes a man a man?

Am I a man?

Yes. Technically I am.

They’re turning kids into slaves just to make cheaper sneakers.

But hat’s the real cost?

‘Cause the sneakers don’t seem that much cheaper.

Why are we still paying so much for sneakers

When you got them made by little slave kids

What are your overheads?

Well, at the end of your life, you’re lucky if die,

Sometimes I wonder why we even try.

I saw a man lying on the street half dead

With knives and forks sticking out of his leg.

And he said,

“Ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow

Can somebody get that knife and fork out of my leg, please?

Can somebody please remove these cutleries from my knees?”

And then we break it down.

This is where we break it down

Ooh

This is where we break it down

Aah

This is where we do the whoa-o-o-o

Break it down

This is where we build it up now

We build it up now

We build it up now

We build it up now

We build it up now

Build it up

And then we stop

Episode two of the fantastic Flight of the Conchords contained another pair of musical gems, but Inner City Pressure was the best of the episode;

Inner City Pressure

Inner city life, inner city pressure

The concrete world is starting to get ya

The city is alive, the city is expanding,

Living in the city can be demanding,

You’ve pawned everything, everything you own,

Your toothbrush, jar, and a camera phone

You don’t know where you’re going

You cross the street

You don’t know why you did,

You walk back across the street.

Standing in the sitting room, totally skint

And your favorite jersey is covered in lint

You want to sit down, but you sold your chair

So you just stand there

You just stand there

You just stand there

Inner

Inner city

Inner city pressure

Inner city pressure

Counting coins on the counter of the 7-11,

From a quarter past six ‘til a quarter to seven,

The manager Bevan starts to abuse me

Hey man, I just want some Muesli,

Neon signs, hidden messages,

Questions, answers, fetishes,

You know you’re not in high finance,

Considering getting second hand underpants,

Check your mind, how’d it get so bad?

What happened to those other underpants you had,

Look in your pockets, haven’t found a cent yet,

Landlords on your balls, have you paid your rent yet?

Inner

Inner city

Inner city pressure

Inner city pressure

So you think maybe you’ll be a prostitute,

Just to pay for your lessons, you’re learning the flute,

The ladies won’t pay you very much for this,

Looks like you’ll never be a concert flautist,

You don’t measure up to the expectation

When you’re unemployed there’s no vacation

No one cares, no one sympathizes

You just stay home and play synthesizers.

Inner

Inner city

Inner city pressure

Inner city pressure

Inner

Inner city

Inner city pressure

Inner city pressure

Perhaps it is because I think I need more structure in my life that I got the urge to have a blog with a "theme". Once I had one at My Cool Job, I felt that there were things I'd like to stay or post that didn't fit the theme, so I started a more personal blog here.

But the question I'm asking myself is...why did I give myself ANOTHER theme on this blog? Fuck that.

I am officially de-theming this blog. It's wide open. Anything could happen at any moment.

I'm free and if I want to link here or post about this -- who's going to stop me?

There. I said it. I feel better now.

Your reward for reading this far is to laugh your head off when you watch this (and who says white guys from New Zealand can't rap?):
