This being the case, Hank Haney, Woods' swing coach and Tiger are going to have to do without that extra yardage for his knee's sake. But will that end Tiger's career? Hardly. Tiger Woods is the best golfer of all time and will continue to rock the leader boards in the future. It has always been my firm belief that 50% of Golf is mental and the other 50% is physical. Tiger is in great physical condition and with his performance at the 2008 U.S. Open, has proved that his mental toughness is his secret.

Twelve years passes, I get old and graduate high school and find myself at the University of Kentucky, and Tiger is still Tiger.  But as everyone knows, Tigers struggle to hunt with torn ACLs, so for the first time since I began to watch golf, a major championship field isn't shadowed by the presence of Woods.  So it makes perfect sense then that the man who dominated the tour before Tiger would dominate the championship in which Tiger's presence is conspiculously absent.

Greg Norman leads the British Open by two strokes with 18 holes to play.  This would be the greatest upset in a major golf championship in, well, maybe ever.  Yes, you could argue for Ben Curtis and Todd Hamilton in the British in consecutive years, or John Daly in the PGA back in 1991, or Jack Fleck in the U.S. Open back in 1955.  But all those men won tournaments in the prime of their careers, or at least with their prime ahead of them (Daly, for instance).  Norman was done.  The man most known for choking in majors won his last British Open (also his last major) in the early days of the Clinton Administration, and Rick Pitino was patrolling the sidelines at Rupp Arena the last time Norman held the lead after 54 holes in a major.  He last contended at the Masters in 1999, falling to Jose Maria Olazabal.  This guy was yesterday's news, but he is today's big story and perhaps tomorrow's champion.

Norman still has 18 wind-swept holes to navigate before reaching the prize, so I'm not crowning him champion yet...not by a long shot.  I believe Padraig Harrington will be the man to beat tomorrow if his wrist holds up, but there's no reason to believe Norman won't be a factor for the entire day.  He will have to play extremely well to win, but a final round comprable to his first three will get the job done.  And if it happens, I'll be ten years old again.

We were supposed to not care much about the next two major championships with Tiger Woods home on crutches. The British Open was supposed to be anticlimactic and lacking for drama.

Uh-huh. Whatever.

After misfiring twice last season -- two guys on my Who Won’t Win list last season won a major each -- I’ve been perfect this year, nailing both Trevor Immelman on the eve of the final round of The Masters and then again knocking it out of the park with Tiger Woods winning the U.S. Open. (I know, I know. Tough call there.)

Now I’m faced with an almost impossible chore with the Open Championship. How tempted will I be with 53-year-old Greg Norman at the top of the leaderboard? What about the weather, which can change in an instant? And is there another major where a no-name has a better chance at shocking the world than the British Open?

But the world doesn’t want to hear about labor pains. It only wants to see the baby. Here are my picks for Who Can Win, Who Won’t Win and Who Will Win the 137^th Open Championship.

Who Can Win

Anthony Kim +7 This guy is as much of an up-and-comer as the PGA Tour has seen in the last decade. He’s won twice on two of the toughest courses on Tour this year, and here he is, tied for fifth entering Sunday. He may in the end become the rival to Woods we’ve all been hoping for. It’s his first look at links golf, which most experts figured would keep him from contending. Well, here he is. He’s got game.

Ian Poulter +8 Any Englishman within six shots can win this thing because they at least have considerable experience in this kind of golf. Plus, Poulter’s good, and he doesn’t have to worry about Woods, whom he blasted in a preseason interview. But he’s going to have to be a post-a-score guy, too,

Ben Curtis +7 When Curtis finished his even-par round early in the day, he was tied for 21^st. By the close of the round, he found himself tied for fifth. He’s a former Open champion, has validated that unforeseen victory with a win on the PGA Tour and seems to have a knack for links golf.

K.J. Choi +4 He entered the weekend in the final pairing for the second year in a row, and even though he shot 75 on Saturday, he’s a world-class player who’s only two shots off. And when the leader is a 53-year-old who rarely practices, let alone plays, and has a reputation for choking, well, the lead may actually be 4 over.

Padraig Harrington +4 The defending champion tried to choke away last year’s Open on the 18^th hole before winning in a playoff, and said on Wednesday that his sore wrist might be too much to handle. But here he is again, in the final pairing on Sunday and only two shots back. The Irishman’s game is built for the Open, he’ll be the overwhelming crowd favorite should the Shark falter early and his expectations are still a shade low because he never knows when the wrist will go on him. A built-in excuse sure is nice in a major.

Anybody +9 Or Under This even goes for the no-names who are within the final few groups, as well as any of the big names (Jim Furyk, Retief Goosen, Davis Love III, Sergio Garcia). No-names can win the Open, though. Paul Lawrie recovered from 10 shots back on Sunday to win. Curtis won. Todd Hamilton won. The Open is unlike any major in that just about anybody in the field can win.

Who Won’t Win

Phil Mickelson +13 He went the wrong way on Saturday. Sure, he got a tough draw on Thursday and finished with a 79 in nearly unplayable conditions. He then came back with a brilliant 68 on Friday to make the cut and move to 7 over. Saturday featured 35-mph winds, and Lefty needed something from par to 2 over to have a chance. But a 76 later, Lefty’s officially out of it.

David Duval +15 We knew this was coming, didn’t we? He can tell us all he wants about how close his game is, but every time he throws an 83 up there, there’s no explanation. Sorry David, you’re done. Two days does not a comeback make.

Viewers Who Like to See Birdies There wasn’t a single round under par on Saturday. Not a one. If you’re one of those fans who likes to see shootouts and players race up the leaderboard, wait for the Wyndham Championship. Unless the weather relents on Sunday, it’ll be a war of attrition.

Who Will Win

I can’t believe I’m doing this.

Greg Norman +2 This has to be a joke, right?

How? How in the world has this been happening for three days? How? He’s 53. He plays more tennis than golf now. This a major championship, not some Shark Shootout.

And yet on a day in which playing the game of golf was near impossible, Norman not only fires a sturdy 72, he plays the last eight holes in 2 under after a double bogey on the 10^th hole. Norman rallied at the end of his round and charged into sole possession of the lead.

But we’ve seen this movie before, right? No professional athlete in the last half century has epitomized “the choke” more than Norman. In my blog on Thursday, when he was initially playing well, I wondered whether Norman was just setting up the golf world for another inglorious fall.

Well, here we go.

I can’t believe I’m picking him to win, especially when Choi and Harrington are sitting right there. But Norman has been through the worst a sport can throw at him, and not only has he walked away, he’s stood upright. His entire legacy in the game could change in an instant on Sunday, or it could suffer further if he tosses up an 82, which could very well happen. (And imagine if he’s standing on the 18^th tee with the lead and blows it.)

But who’s expecting him to win? Anybody? Anywhere? At 53, he would easily be the oldest major-winner ever. It would be even more improbable than what Jack Nicklaus did in The Masters in 1986. Nobody thinks he can do this. He may even feel the same way.

But unlike at Augusta more than a decade ago, there’s no pressure on Norman to win. None. And remember, he’s won this championship before. Twice. This is the only major that harbors good memories in his golfing soul.

Picking Greg Norman to win the 2008 Open Championship is the gutsiest pick I’ve ever made in all the years I’ve been writing these columns.

I could look like a fool if Norman doesn’t prevail.

But like Norman choking away a major, that would be nothing new.

"I don't know why or how it happened," said Wie, who had been crying moments earlier. She took no questions before leaving the clubhouse at Panther Creek Country Club.

According to an ESPN.Com report, Sue Witters, the LPGA's director of tournament competitions, disqualified Wie in a small office in an LPGA trailer at the golf course after asking her what had happened.

"She was like a little kid after you tell them there's no Santa Claus," Witters said.

According to a statement released Saturday by the LPGA, Wie's failure to sign her scorecard was a violation of Rule 6-6b, according to The Rules of Golf and confirmed by the USGA.

The rule states: "After completion of the round, the competitor should check his score for each hole and settle any doubtful points with the Committee. He must ensure that the marker or markers have signed the score card, sign the score card himself and return it to the Committee as soon as possible."

With the area of the scoring tent clearly marked, Michelle Wie "thought it would be okay". Of course, these things happen but it is these mistakes that cost golfers at this level a lot of money and embarrassment.  To make the matter worse, this is not the first time this has happened to Wie either. During the third round of the 2005 Samsung Championship, which was her professional debut, she was disqualified for taking an improper drop.

Brett Myers, whose best year was in 2005 when he went 13-8 with a 3.72 ERA, is back in the bigs after a brief stint in the minors. The former Phillies ace is 3-9 this year with a 5.84 ERA and apparently felt that a 1-3 stint against Double-A and Triple-A ball with a 3.00 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 27 innings was just what he needed to fix his mechanics.

Myers' strikeouts in the minors is impressive while his ERA is good--not great--which scares me because the Phillies expect Myers to be an ace for them in the second half, although he can't do much worse than he did in the first half. That being said about Myers, there is something terribly wrong with the Minnesota Twins managing.

Francisco Liriano, who had three bad starts to begin the season, has been in the minors for four months now. The Twins would probably admit that they should have kept Liriano, who missed the entire 2007 season to Tommy John surgery, in the minors a bit longer to begin the season but now, they are just wasting his talent. The 24-year-old is 8-2 with a 3.34 ERA in Triple-A, has 94 strikeouts in 105 innings and a fastball touching 96 miles per hour.

Liriano's agent claims the Twins are keeping him down there to prevent him from being qualifed for salary arbitration at the end of the year, but the team claims they don't have room for him in the rotation with the team's recent surprising success. Yes, the Twins are just 1.5 games behind the White Sox for the division lead after winning 22 of their last 29, but why won't you improve a team if you can? Perhaps they can win 23 or 24 in that same stretch with Liriano in the mix. And contrary to the Twins saying they don't know who they would replace him for in their starting five, let me give you their season stats.

Livan Hernandez: 9-6 with a 5.44 ERA
Scott Baker: 6-2 with a 3.47 ERA
Nick Blackburn: 7-5 with a 3.65 ERA
Kevin Slowey: 6-6 with a 4.26 ERA
Glen Perkins: 7-2 with a 3.84 ERA

I don't know how you have trouble cutting Hernandez, who has the same agent as Liriano. Heck, I'd do away with Slowey for the young stud too. And what's missing is a solid ace on the staff, someone that only Liriano of the six pitchers has the potential for. Integrate him into the major league level now or prepare to fall short like the past sixteen years.

Wie Finds Another Way to Lose

As if Michelle Wie needed any help losing throughout her pro career, here's another one that caught Wie by surprise. She was disqualified Saturday after failing to sign her scorecard. The 18-year-old was playing arguably her best golf as a pro, just one stroke behind Yani Tseng after three rounds of the State Farm Classic when she left a designated area before signing her scorecard. Wie, who is playing part-time while attending Stanford, was at 17-under for the tournament.

Norman Set to Become the Oldest to Win a Major

Greg Norman, who has been the story of the tournament, is first after three rounds of the British Open. Norman, who last won a major in 1993, is vying to become the oldest player to win a major at 53 years old. (I mean, look how old his picture looks.) At 2-over par, he leads defending champion Padraig Harrington and K.J. Choi by two strokes.

The oldest major champion is Julius Boros, who was 48 when he won the 1968 PGA Championship.

In the meantime both Phil Mickleson and Colin Montgomery sucked it up to make the cut on Friday. John Daly crashed and burned with an 80 on Thursday to be followed by an 89 on Friday.

The most bizarre moment of the Open was at the pre-tournament interview with John Daly where he complained that Butch Harmon had ruined his life. I was surprised as I thought that John had accomplished that feat all on his own.

Regardless, the final round will be interesting especially if the high wind conditions continue. If Saturday is any guide the final outcome will be decided by who backs up the least rather than who shoots the lights out. But then it is golf and you never know.

As most people know by now, golfer Michelle Wie's career has really hit the skids. The one-time teen prodigy has fallen off the map in competitive womens golf.

Saturday Wie completed her best round of the season shooting a 5 under 67 at the State Farm Classic. The score put her in second place at the tournament. That is WOULD HAVE put her in second place. Even on the ONE day of the year that Wie managed to play well she still managed to find disaster.

Wie forgot to sign her scorecard. She was disqualified from the tournament by the LPGA. The now 18-year-old Wie was seen crying after the disqualification.

That's a pretty stupid way to lose a golf tournament for someone with a Stanford education. Actually, it's a pretty stupid move by ANYONE.

Unbelievable performance by 'old' Greg Norman

It seems to be the month for Aussies to shine. Not only is Cadel Evans leading the Tour de France cycling event for the 5th consecutive day, now Greg Norman leads the British Open Golf Championship after three rounds. Amazingly the 53 year old takes a two shot lead into tonight's final round at Royal Birkdale.

I switched over last night just to catch the score after watching Le Tour, but remained glued to the set as Norman handled the incredibly difficult and windy seaside course in a rock-solid two over par to come from 3 shots back earlier in the round and grab the lead as everybody else faltered.

What makes this all the more amazing is that Norman actually retired from professional golf quite a few years ago and is only playing the event by invitation as a past winner. But he's stunned the golfing world by playing some of the best golf of his life.

And now I feel compelled to stay up late again just to see if he can pull off the impossible. This is like turning the clock back and entering a time warp; the last time Norman was a contender in a major golf event was in 1996 when he blew a six-stroke lead in the final round of the US Masters, losing to Nick Faldo. I thought the days of staying up late to watch Greg Norman choke just fail to win in the last round were well and truly over - he better win this one!

Actually I've got a feeling he might. Norman's well chronicled fade-outs were mainly in America but this is the British Open an event he seems more suited to, due to the tougher conditions. He's won it twice before in 1986 & 1993 and if last night's performance was anything to go by he just might do it again.

When I was golfing today in Ropice, I had a hard time deciding what was more fascinating -- whether it was the peaceful mountainous scenery in which the challenging golf course is set in, or the fleet of cars in the parking lot.

I was especially intrigued by two Audi A8 limousines that stood calmly next to each other, reflecting the sun light off their metallic black and sapphire exteriors. Although surrounded by cars of brands that have become synonymous with luxury -- Mercedes-Benz coupes, BMW sedans, or Range Rovers SUVs -- Audi's monumental tail lights in the back, characteristic overlapping rings in the front, and large opaque black windows on the sides signaled self-confidence and even superiority over its neighbors. The aggressiveness the cars possessed under their hoods were hidden under their reserved and majestic aluminum bodies, and when the engine of one went on, on the same time as we were packing the golf bags into our car, the subtle symphony produced by the 4.2l engine sounded almost subconsciously seducing. Look out for this kid over the next five years. He has had a slow and steady improvement since he turned pro 3 years ago and has already earned $382,267 this year - and this week will definitely add to that total. He qualified for the FedEx Cup last year and is currently in 134th place. My bold prediction? He will be at least T30 and possibly T25 at the end of the day tomorrow.
