Não é de hoje que sabemos da reputação do Japão no quesito caça às baleias.
Apesar da moratória à caça comercial vigorar desde 1986, o Japão possui uma cota de captura científica na Antártida que atinge cerca de mil baleias por ano. Tsuyoshi Iwata, diretor-assistente da Divisão Oceânica da Agência de Pesca do Japão, usa vários argumentos para justificar a intenção do país de voltar a caçar comercialmente. Diz que é preciso matar animais "para pesquisa".

Isso de falar em pesquisa não cola mais: 5.000 toneladas de carne de baleia são vendidas ao ano no país.
"Nós temos tradição de comer carne de baleia. E, no futuro, esse uso deve ficar ainda mais importante em razão da crise mundial de alimentos"
Ah claro. Como se as baleias tivessem culpa na crise de alimentos. Daí em vez do Japão ajudar para evitar/diminuir esta crise (afinal, eles também são muito culpados), eles vão é matar as baleias e tudo será resolvido, certo? Menos, senhor Iwata. Menos.

Iwata ainda fiz que "é preciso matar as baleias para ver o que tem dentro, e saber idade e tamanho." Sara Holden, coordenadora internacional da campanha de Baleias do Greenpeace, ironiza esse tipo de afirmação. "O conteúdo do estômago é o mesmo de muitos anos atrás. E é possível saber aproximadamente idade e tamanho sem matar."

Iwata, porém, afirma que, quanto mais baleias forem mortas, mais estatística haverá para provar que é viável voltar a caçar de maneira comercial.
A partir de amanhã, Sr. Iawata, vamos soltar alguns serial killers. Mais estatística haverá para provar que eles realmente são violentos e precisam ser presos.

Mesmo assumindo considerar o abate de baleias natural, os japoneses ainda parecem sentir certo constrangimento com a ação. Leandra Gonçalves, do Greenpeace, seguiu navios na Antártida entre o final de 2007 e início deste ano. "Decidiram não caçar na nossa frente. Perseguimos a frota por duas semanas e impedimos a caça de mais de cem baleias."
Ótimo notícia. Só acho estranho uma coisa, Sra. Leandra.
O Instituto Sea Shepherd Brasil, que luta há mais de 30 anos para a preservação da vida marinha, e que tem como fundador Paul Watson, também fundador do Greenpeace, recentemente pediu apoio ao GP para lutar contra a pesca de baleias no Santuário Ártico. E o que foi que vocês falaram? Nada.

Bom, enquanto isso, na Dinamarca, país superdesenvolvido, acontece todo ano um festival de massacre de baleias. As crianças também participam, afinal, todos tem que se divertir, né?!
Eu fico tentando entender o que eles pensam. Juro que não consigo.
Vou continuar fazendo minha parte, que eu sei que um dia a gente muda isso.

Whole Foods plans to announce today the first comprehensive set of aquaculture guidelines by a major retailer. Wal-Mart has established standards for farmed shrimp and certified its factories with the Aquaculture Certification Council. And Wegmans worked with Environmental Defense Fund on its farmed-shrimp policy to ban antibiotics, avoid damaging sensitive habitats, treat waste water and reduce the use of wild fish to feed shrimp.

This is a good start. But it's only a start. Aquaculture is one of those third- or fourth-tier environmental issues that are more revealing than giant problems such as climate change, because they show why various world systems - natural and manmade - are stressed to the point of breakdown right now. It's a classic case of seemingly benign, yet perverse incentives backfiring. In this case, consumers have good motives for seeking out farmed fish. They want a better diet. They know there's too much fishing going on. They know that some wild-caught fish contain unhealthy levels of mercury and other chemicals. In addition, the global supply of wild-caught fish leveled off some years back, driving demand for alternatives further upward. So, aquaculture production has doubled in the past 10 years.

But fish farming is itself an engine of radical environmental/ecological/social change. What happens when you quickly create an industry that has no pre-existing infrastructure, and do it mostly in remote coastal landscapes of the developing world? You get many, many problems. I'll never forget a trip I took in the 1990s to a shrimp farming region in southern Thailand. A few years earlier, the area had been rice paddies. Then the seafood corporations and venture capitalists arrived, and boom - all the rice paddies were shrimp farms, and subsistence rice cultivators were Thailand's newest entrepreneurs. But there was no environmental oversight. Landscape was ugly and degraded. Shrimp waste was in piles everywhere. Social problems were on the rise as the farmers spent previously-unimaginable sums of cash. Etc.

Scenes like this have been spreading to different areas of the world, as this Greenpeace report documents (warning: pdf file). There are pernicious innovations, too, including tuna ranching, in which bluefin tuna are captured, caged and fattened - something that is driving their low numbers down further. So as the consumers at Whole Foods and Wal-Mart chowed down on their tilapia and thought they were doing themselves and the world a favor, they were subsidizing the futher fraying of the coastal ecologies around the world.

Efforts like the WWF's certification program attempt to use those same incentives in a positive manner, by upping demand for sustainable seafood and marginalizing the bad actors. But it's not clear this type of program will ever do the trick - what's needed, ultimately, is a combination of actual enforcement and responsible business practices in those remote spots. Until that happens, Western consumers will still be complicit in a lot of unneccessary ecological degradation.

Outros 1.096 km2 de florestas foram desmatados na Amazónia Legal no mês de Maio, segundo o Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe), que divulgou nesta terça-feira os dados do sistema de Detecção em Tempo Real (Deter) para este período, em que 46% da região esteve coberta por nuvens. Pelo segundo mês consecutivo, a área de floresta destruída corresponde ao tamanho da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, terra natal do Ministro do Meio Ambiente, Carlos Minc.

No mês anterior, foram detectados 1.123 km2 desmatados na Amazónia, com 53% de cobertura de nuvens. O Mato Grosso, mais uma vez, é o campeão do desmatamento, com 646 km2, sendo que os dados incluem tanto corte raso como degradação progressiva.

"Não basta ficar a discutir todos os meses se os números aumentaram ou diminuíram. A principal questão é: o governo está agindo em tempo hábil, usando os alertas do Deter, para combater o desmatamento na Amazónia? A resposta é: à parte algumas ações espetaculares pontuais, o Brasil não tem feito o dever de casa como deveria", avalia Paulo Adario, coordenador da campanha Amazónia, do Greenpeace.

Para a organização, o governo precisa enfrentara as principais causas da destruição da Amazónia, que são de conhecimento de todos: o aumento da fronteira agrícola, a exploração ilegal e predatória de madeira, a transferência de população carente para a região (por falta de um programa eficiente de reforma agrária em outras áreas do país), a queima da floresta para a produção de carvão (para atender a procura das mineradoras). O elemento comum a todas estas causas é a falta de governança.

"Enquanto o Brasil não resolver as causas estruturais que provocam o desmatamento da Amazónia, ou seja, enquanto não substituir o atual modelo de desenvolvimento baseado na exportação de mercadorias de baixo valor agregado por uma economia de base florestal que beneficie as populações locais, aliada à proteção da floresta, a flutuação do desmatamento continuará a ser notícia", afirma Adario.

Segundo ele, ao invés de apenas discutir números, a sociedade também deve cobrar a responsabilidade do governo em zerar o desmatamento da Amazónia o mais rápido possível.

O Greenpeace destaca que os dados do Deter não são precisos, já que ele não foi concebido para ser um sistema para medir a área desmatada. O sistema utilizado pelo Inpe para medir as áreas desmatadas, desde 1988, é o Programa de Cálculo do Desflorestamento da Amazônia (Prodes), que utiliza imagens de satélite de alta resolução, medidas de agosto a agosto. O Deter começou a ser utilizado em 2004 como um sistema de alerta que tem como principal propósito apoiar o governo para ações de fiscalização e controle de desmatamento.

These turtles are found in very few spots around the world (click here to see the WWF map showing their habitats), and Gahirmatha is the world's largest nesting ground for these poor amphibians.

These turtles lay eggs during April and May every year, and till recently no body seemed to care for them, now however there are a few efforts to help the olive ridley turtles.

In February last year, Tata Steel and L&T Ltd decided to build "an all-weather deep port at a location north of the mouth of river Dhamra in Orissa". That was when all the action started. The project called the Dharma Port project, is apparently a long overdue plan, first started in 1998, but halted due to lots of problems.

Since that time there has been lots of support for the preservation of Olive Ridleys.

An MP requested that the test firing of missiles (that takes place every year during April and May at Gahirmatha), be stopped. The DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) however claimed that missile testing isn't any deterrent at all to turtle nesting (I agree with you they are slightly eccentric)

Now there are two possible reasons why turtles don't come and lay eggs at their favorite spots.

1. This is a very famous hypothesis, though it hasn't been scientifically established yet - lights. Bright lights, say some scientists drive away turtles.

2. People eat the poor turtles and their eggs.

It is illegal to kill turtles and eat them, we all know that. Lots of trawlers (big ships that are used to fish) however have not installed "Turtle Excluding Devices" in their nets.

Okay so what happened next? Next big new about the turtles was that the Orissa State government banned fishing for a six month period. The thing about the turtles that really intrigued me was that they lay eggs in hordes. Thousands of them come at the same time and lay their eggs together, and sometimes scoop out each other's nests to do so (scientists claim that these are their strengths as a struggling species).

The third very interesting thing is that Greenpeace got involved, and the issue took huge proportions. Greenpeace activists, started dressing up as turtles, sent online email petitions signed by many, many people to Ratan Tata, and other varied means of protest.

In reply to all this, the company officials said that the port would not in anyway disturb the turtles

Yes people replied to this too saying the panel's decision was all messed up

What most people don't know is that the entire project itself is a little jinxed. It seems the International Sea Port's consortium, does not like the pace at which the papers are being moved at Orissa, and might decide to pull out of the project. If this happens, the entire project may be stopped

Hmmm, seems like Ratan Tata alone is not responsible for this, but he is the face of the project however and should do something.

En dépit des protestations internationales, le Japon continue de chasser la baleine à des fins soi-disant scientifiques, programme qui coûte chaque année quelque 500 millions de yens (environ 4,7 millions de dollars) aux contribuables japonais.

Ferrero precisa che tali obiettivi devono essere perseguiti all'interno della RSPO (Tavola Rotonda per l'Olio di Palma Sostenibile), il tavolo internazionale e istituzionale costituito a tale scopo, in collaborazione con tutti i suoi membri. Negli ultimi mesi, infatti, Unilever, presidente della RSPO, ha aderito all'appello di Greenpeace per un'immediata moratoria sull'espansione della palma daolio nelle foreste del Sud est asiatico. Unilever insieme a Greenpeace sta sensibilizzando tutti i membri della RSPO e chiedendo lo sviluppo di più efficienti e credibili parametri per garantire la sostenibilità dell'olio di palma prodotto nel Sud Est Asiatico.

"Avevamo chiesto a Nutella di impegnarsi a salvare la foresta e la dichiarazione di Ferrero per un olio di palma sostenibile ci rende felici" - dichiara Chiara Campione, responsabile campagnaForeste di Greenpeace - "Tale impegno però non avrà effetto se le altre multinazionali che aderiscono alla RSPO non smettono di distruggere le foreste pluviali del Sud Est Asiatico. Per questo motivo sostenere la moratoria è così importante."

Proprio alla fine dello scorso mese gli attivisti di Greenpeace travestiti da giocatori della Nazionale degli ultimi oranghi del Borneo avevano chiesto anche agli Azzurri, sponsorizzati da Nutella, di inviare a Ferrero il messaggio "Nutella salva la foresta". La protesta degli oranghi si è diffusa anche online sul sito "www.nutellasalvalaforesta.it" dove i consumatori hanno potuto inviare una lettera e un foto messaggio per chiedere a Nutella "Che mondo sarebbe senza foresta?". A Ferrero sono arrivate più di 10.000 email.

"Ora la campagna di Greenpeace andrà avanti fino a quando tutti i membri della RSPO e le altre grandi multinazionali che utilizzano olio di palma uniranno le forze insieme a Unilever e Ferrero per fermare la distruzione delle foreste in corso." conclude Campione.

The socialism and progressivism that thrived through the 1930s saw farmers, loggers, fisheries workers, and miners as its central constituency along with longshoremen and factory workers. Where did it go? You can see missed opportunities again and again. Some of the potential for a broad, blue-collar left was trampled by the virulent anti-communism and anti-labor-union mood of the postwar era. More of it was undermined by the culture clash that came out of the civil rights movement. By the 1980s, when I was old enough to start paying attention, the divide was pretty wide. And environmentalists were typically found on one side.

I've been thinking about this issue a lot in the last few months, spurred by the challenge that climate change activists represent to the Newcastle coal industry. The city still bears the scars of de-industrialisation. There are abandoned buildings, even on the ostensible mainstreet.  This isn't to say that there isn't wealth; the northern beaches are loaded with conspicuous consumption. But coal exports are the lifeblood of the economy, and if they were ripped away, there is no doubt, in the short term at least, many people would suffer.

I think climate change activists are on the right side of the moral calculus, and that the effects of not acting will be catastrophic, and harm many more people than if we continue as usual. The poor and the working class are almost always the worst affected, even in the developing world. So this isn't about abandoning the fight, or even watering down our demands to accommodate a compromise. But it does mean we have to think strategically about how we work, and build as many alliances as possible. We may be right, but if we continue business as usual we'll be on the back foot here. The environmental movement has been coopted, often willingly, into being a vehicle of class, in which the rich who can afford "eco" and "organic" X,Y and Z, and offsets that allow them to pollute as much as they ever have, lecture the backwards poor. A recent entry in Tim Lambert's otherwise excellent blog Deltiod illustrated this well. Al Gore, a millionaire with ample resources, chooses to use huge amounts of energy in his home, 18 times that of the already profligate average American. Rather than castigate him for not taking basic steps to reduce this consumption, his defenders maintain that with offsets and green-power, no substantial change is necessary, and that the rich can continue to consume vast amounts more than the poor.

Basing how seriously you take global warming on Gore's personal behavior is just silly. On the other hand, Gore's approach to tackling global warming is not some personal matter. His approach is representative of the establishment "green" movement and thus his conduct does indicate that AGW shapes up to be another front in the class war: placing demands on the masses (if not actual sacrifices, at least restraint, and in addition, awareness and political activity) but being merely a business opportunity for the rich.

I think that one of the more important struggles of the next decade will be fighting against "environmentalists", but that will have to wait for another post.

Very often activists wield class-privilege, race-privilege, or educational-privilege without any awareness that they're doing so. Most of us have the option of going back home, to our jobs (or benefits) and lives in other places, once we've protested in other places. We might not be able to fall back on money, but we've structured our lives in such a way that we're not grounded in the place we're trying to affect. Struggling for the place you live in has a lot of moral currency for me. Struggling to keep food on the table has even more, even if to do so you are causing harm elsewhere.

I think Asher's attempts to build solidarity with the miners on the coast, despite being apparently objectively at odds with their way of life is a worthwhile effort.  At the very least, recognising and dialoguing with the people you're affecting is going to blunt some of the hostility.

One of the best environmental campaigns I've seen, although I was very much on the margins, was Greenpeace's work on Dioxins. In Mangere, my community, the local population was brought on board and became a partner, sharing in the struggle to shut down the toxic incinerator at the airport. What this did was effectively demonstrate to the Government that the people would not accept dioxins in their community. I know that others have done similar campaigns in New Zealand, and respect their work. The toxics movement has invested heavily in building with communities for environmental justice.  I also like that the Green Party is connecting publicly their environmental campaigns to the interests of the ordinary New Zealander. These connections have always been there, but are often neglected.

The other significant barrier erected, as Solnit notes, is the cultural divide that activists create for themselves.

[The DJ] would oblige with reggae, mostly, and we’d wave our limbs vaguely, dancing solo and free-form as white people have danced to rock-and-roll since the mid-1960s. Everyone else would sit down to wait this other music out. It was not a great movement-building exercise. How far were you going to get with a community when you couldn’t stand their music or even be diplomatic about it?

Their dress, music, and demeanor stand as markers. You are not with us, and you do not share our interests. And this is completely ridiculous. The environment and animals do not care what you are wearing or what your favourite album is. And yet these are things that I've seen people unwilling to compromise, aware of how they are perceived but willing to discount this as evidence of the stupidity of the people they are challenging. When I last went to Gore, (admittedly to visit their stunning gallery), the friends I told were full of scorn and abuse for its people and country music. I was pleasantly surprised by the city and Southland.  I wished that the self-righteous Dunedinites could put away their animosity and pre-conceptions. They might even enjoy themselves.

Speaking of which, I had a question asked of me today, after offering criticism for the current Labour Government's transparent attempts to coopt environmental rhetoric for their own purposes, the kind that out of touch Labour supporters swallow readily. I was asked if I have a fun life, what with being "perennially angry".

I'm not mad, because a while ago I come to accept that this is how bad things are. It was a very comforting realisation. Now I just get on with the business of opposing things without giving myself anger to deal with.  I did get particularly angry about the immigration bill however, as it is so obviously evil that I wonder how even Labour supporters can live with it. But the last few weeks have proven they can.

Many enjoyable and wonderful things exist in this world, and they exist independently of the political process, thank god, or this world would be a bleak or hostile place indeed.

Greenpeace intercepted one of many boxes of whale meat smuggled off the Nisshin Maru disguised as personal baggage, exposing the fact that choice pieces of whale meat were being given to certain crew members for personal gain and that Japanese taxpayers were footing the bill. Once the Greenpeace investigation had been finalised, all the evidence - including the box of whale meat, was handed to the Tokyo District Public Prosecutor, who began a formal investigation.

The Australian Greens are extremely concerned that these activists are being held without charge by Japanese police; it would appear these actions are politically motivated to shut down the successful Greenpeace campaign. It is hard to think otherwise when the Japanese Authorities sent in forty police to raid the Greenpeace offices and seize all computers and financial records. This is a disproportionate reaction to this matter.

Human rights groups from inside and outside of Japan have commented on the arrests. The Japanese Lawyers' Network for Human Rights Observation around the G8 Summit (WATCH) issued a statement on June 28th in which they write:

“The arrest of the two activists is not only a human rights violation with regard to the unjustifiable arrest, detention and investigation, but also a challenge against the freedom of expression. Police repression against the activists' denunciation obstructs the legitimate activities of both Japanese civil society and international society and is therefore internationally unacceptable and subject to global criticism as an affront to humanity.”

On July 9th, 2008 Transparency International posted a statement on their website which reads:

“Transparency International (TI) expresses its solidarity with two Greenpeace activists detained after publishing a report alleging corruption within the Japanese sponsored South Ocean whaling programme, and asks for clarity about the motives of these arrests. The two detained Greenpeace activists Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki had investigated and documented activities onboard a Japanese whaling ship and the resulting sale of whale meat processed during the scientific research undertaken on board. TI requests to release the two at once because it is unnecessary to bind them any longer. TI denounces attempts - even unintentional ones - to intimidate or silence NGOs and nonviolent civil society actors. TI expresses its concern about the drop by the Tokyo District Public Prosecutor of its investigation into the Greenpeace allegations of assumed corruption published in the above mentioned report. The authorities in charge should take the necessary steps to either reintroduce the investigations or clarify the reasons for abandoning the case.”

Jeremy Hobbs, Executive Director of Oxfam International, wrote in a letter to Greenpeace on July 4th;

“Oxfam International supports calls to the Japanese authorities to release the Greenpeace protestors Junichi Sato and Tori Suzuki, who have been detained for several days without charge. We believe that this lengthy detention is unnecessary and excessive, given the fact that they are protesting about an issue of public interest rather than pursuing personal gain.”

The Australian Greens respectfully request the Japanese Government investigate these allegations and consider whether procedural fairness and due legal process has been pursued in this instance under Japanese law.

We are concerned that evidence was presented to Japanese Authorities showing that whale meat had been used as ‘gifts’, that a significant amount of meat had been thrown overboard and that meat from diseased whales was being processed.

Further, the Greens want to express concern that the people who brought these allegations to the attention of the international community are currently being held without charge. Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki have cooperated with police in Aomori and with the Tokyo District Public Prosecutor, giving written statements and offered to present themselves to the police at any time. Their arrests therefore appear to be arbitrary.

The Working Group on the modernisation of the IWC will convene in September to begin the discussions surrounding the future direction of the commission. At this time, there has been no commitment from Japan to stop its 'scientific' whaling operations. Good faith and trust building has been asked for by all sides, but it is difficult to believe that the Japanese government is acting in good faith given that it has not yet agreed to end its Southern Ocean whaling program. Rather, it continues to hold two of its own citizens without charge for questioning the activities of this tax-payer funded program and has chosen to investigate the whistleblowers rather than the activity itself.

The Greens will be writing to the Japanese Prime Minister, requesting that Japan investigate these allegations, as well as putting forward a motion in the Australian Senate expressing concern over the issue, and urging immediate action.

Perto do templo mais famoso de Tóquio, o Asakusa Kannon, uma loja chama a atenção: tem uma das paredes coberta pela pintura de uma baleia e as prateleiras estão repletas de latas de diferentes tipos --todas contém carne do maior animal marinho. Uma baleia azul de pelúcia enfeita o local, além de inúmeros suvenires desses mamíferos em miniatura.

O dono do mercadinho primeiro expulsa a curiosa ao ver um flash ser disparado. Depois, ao perceber que a suposta turista --uma repórter-- insiste em conhecer a loja e comprar latas de carne, pede desculpas, em inglês, e lhe dá de brinde pequenas baleias de porcelana.

A reação do comerciante e seu receio às fotos reflete a polêmica existente em torno da caça científica realizada pelo Japão e que tem, como produto, a carne vendida em mercados e restaurantes japoneses.

Apesar de a moratória à caça comercial vigorar desde 1986, o Japão possui uma cota de captura científica na Antártida que atinge cerca de mil baleias por ano. O governo japonês reconhece que a atividade resulta na venda de 5.000 toneladas de carne de baleia ao ano no país.

Tsuyoshi Iwata, diretor-assistente da Divisão Oceânica da Agência de Pesca do Japão, usa vários argumentos para justificar a intenção do país de voltar a caçar comercialmente. Diz que é preciso matar animais "para pesquisa" e que a importância da carne de baleia na dieta local tende a aumentar.

"Nós temos tradição de comer carne de baleia. E, no futuro, esse uso deve ficar ainda mais importante em razão da crise mundial de alimentos", diz Iwata, lembrando que o Japão importa muitos alimentos.

Ele diz, ainda, que só matando é possível saber o que as baleias comem (ao analisar o conteúdo do estômago) e descobrir com precisão idade e tamanho.

Matar para argumentar

Sara Holden, coordenadora internacional da campanha de Baleias do Greenpeace, ironiza esse tipo de afirmação. "O conteúdo do estômago é o mesmo de muitos anos atrás. E é possível saber aproximadamente idade e tamanho sem matar."

Iwata, porém, afirma que, quanto mais baleias forem mortas, mais estatística haverá para provar que é viável voltar a caçar de maneira comercial.

"Em nossa opinião, não existe diferença entre carne de baleia e atum, por exemplo. É um recurso marinho que deve ser utilizado, desde que seja abundante." Os japoneses abatem na região da Antártida até 935 baleias minke, espécie que aparece na categoria "risco menor/dependente de conservação" na lista vermelha de animais ameaçados da IUCN (União Internacional para a Conservação da Natureza).

Também estão na cota 2007/ 2008 outras 50 baleias-fin, espécie da categoria "em perigo", e 50 jubarte, da categoria "vulnerável". Sob pressão, o país disse que não caçaria jubartes pelo menos até o meio do ano.

Tanto ONGs quanto outros países, como o Brasil, questionam a matança. Na opinião de Bernardo Velloso, chefe da Divisão do Mar, da Antártida e do Espaço, do Ministério das Relações Exteriores, o número de baleias abatidas na caça "dita científica" não é justificável do ponto de vista técnico.

De acordo com ele, outro problema é o fato de a cota incluir "50 baleias jubarte, consideradas universalmente o símbolo da espécie em extinção".

O Brasil, que só na década de 80 proibiu a caça, hoje defende o "uso não-letal" desses animais, como o turismo para observação de baleias, que gera lucro e está em expansão.

Mesmo assumindo considerar o abate de baleias natural, os japoneses ainda parecem sentir certo constrangimento com a ação. Leandra Gonçalves, do Greenpeace, seguiu navios na Antártida entre o final de 2007 e início deste ano. "Decidiram não caçar na nossa frente. Perseguimos a frota por duas semanas e impedimos a caça de mais de cem baleias."

7) Introdurre politiche che sfruttino un'economia eco sostenibile per salvare l'ambiente
8) Creazione di una partnership globale per la risoluzione dei problemi mondiali (debiti del terzo mondo, guerre, mercati internazionali, ecc)

Il progetto inoltre si auspica un risveglio dei leader mondiali prima di un evento o un cataclisma che, in conseguenza di una forte perdita di vite umane, costringa gli stati a correre ai ripari e ad iniziare politiche a favore dell'umanità invece che della ricchezza dei singoli stati. Sul quotidiano The Indipendent è stato anticipato questo progetto che si avvale del contributo di 2500 esperti in tutto il globo e dell'appoggio di molte organizzazioni tra le quali l'Unesco, la Banca Mondiale, la Us Army e la Fondazione Rockefeller. Il documento presentato mostra i punti positivi e quelli negativi che il mondo sta raccogliendo dalle scelte fino ad ora perpetuate. Tra le note positive troviamo l'aumento dell'aspettativa di vita media, il calo della mortalità infantile, l'aumento dell'alfabetizzazione, l'aumento del reddito medio pro capite, il calo di guerre e conflitti, e in particolar modo l´aumento dell'uso di Internet. Le note dolenti riguardano invece l'aumento delle emissioni di carbonio e del surriscaldamento globale (ringraziamo Cina e U.S.A.), l´aumento del terrorismo e della corruzione, l´aumento della disoccupazione e il calo della partecipazione al voto degli elettori.

Nell'introduzione del documento, scritta dal professor Jerome Glenn, si può leggere: «Il futuro continua a migliorare per la maggior parte del mondo ma una serie di ostacoli possono alterare drasticamente le prospettive globali. Viviamo in un periodo unico nella nostro storia, Internet, i telefonini, il commercio internazionale, hanno fatto nascere un'umanità interdipendente che può creare e realizzare strategie globali per migliorare le sue prospettive. La nostra è la prima generazione della storia che ha dato a molti gli strumenti per conoscere il mondo nel suo complesso, per identificare i sistemi per il progresso, e per realizzarli». Insomma, basta scuse. Siamo nell'era delle telecomunicazioni, dei blog, delle enciclopedie online, dove le risorse digitali oramai hanno spodestato quelle cartacee. Il web diffonde conoscenza, come indicato dal rapporto. E' il mezzo che sta «reinventando le vite dei terrestri, la più potente forza della storia per la globalizzazione, la democratizzazione, la crescita economica e l'istruzione». Come disse Beppe Grillo, il web è il nuovo media, arriva dalla fonte alle persone senza intermediari. Tan solo el transporte es responsable de una cuarta parte de las emisiones de CO2 en España y consume cerca del 40% de la energía final.

Amigos de la Tierra, Ecologistas en Acción, Greenpeace, Jóvenes Verdes y WWF/Adena apuestan por un futuro libre de petróleo. Y el primer paso a dar en esa dirección pasa por una Revolución Energética, basada en el caso del transporte en un modelo de movilidad donde la norma sea usar menos el coche privado y otros medios de transporte más contaminantes, como el avión, y usar más el transporte público colectivo y medios no motorizados, como la bicicleta o el caminar. Los pocos coches que sean necesarios, deberán ser mucho más eficientes y menos contaminantes. De hecho, los turismos actuales podrían ser ya un 50% más eficientes tan sólo con la tecnología conocida. Pero en lugar de invertir en la fabricación de coches menos contaminantes, la industria ha preferido desviar su interés a la construcción de vehículos cada vez más grandes y más potentes.

Hace doce años, los fabricantes de automóviles europeos se comprometieron a recortar las emisiones medias de los nuevos coches que entraran en el mercado europeo de 180 a 140 g CO2/km para 2008 y a 120 g/km para 2012. Sin embargo esta buena intención de poner sus coches “a régimen” de CO2 se ha quedado en punto muerto, aunque sí han conseguido el verdadero objetivo que perseguían desde el principio: retrasar la adopción de normas eficaces y de obligado cumplimiento para la limitar las emisiones de los coches a nivel europeo.

En diciembre de 2007, la Comisión Europea presentó un proyecto de reglamento que pretende limitar las emisiones de CO2 de los nuevos coches que se vendan en el mercado europeo. Este texto debe ser examinado por los Ministros de Medio Ambiente y por el Parlamento Europeo durante el segundo semestre de 2008. Pero gracias al trabajo de presión realizado por los industriales del coche, reagrupados en torno a la Asociación de Constructores Europeos de Automóviles (ACEA), este proyecto de reglamento tiene una grave falta de ambición. Así, el borrador del texto recoge un límite para las emisiones medias de los motores de 130 g CO2/km de aquí a 2012, en lugar de los 120 g/km necesarios. E incluso se está evaluando la posibilidad de retrasar la puesta en marcha de esta medida a 2015, lo cual recortaría su potencial de reducción de CO2 y permitirá a los fabricantes, una vez más, no hacerse cargo de su responsabilidad frente al cambio climático.

Necesitamos una reglamentación europea ambiciosa. Y para estar a la altura del desafío climático, la Unión Europea debe dotarse de una normativa sobre las emisiones de los coches nuevos que comprenda:

* La obligación de limitar las emisiones medias de CO2 a 120 gramos por km de aquí a 2012 y fijar objetivos a largo plazo, de 80 gramos por km para 2020: para poder cumplir con el Protocolo de Kioto y asegurar una visión de futuro a los mercados para que sepan en qué tienen que invertir.
* Un reparto del esfuerzo entre los distintos fabricantes basado en el criterio del área superficial (es decir, la superficie entre las cuatro ruedas de un vehículo) y no en el peso del coche: un sistema como el propuesto en este momento, que diferencia los valores límite de CO2 para los distintos tipos de vehículos en función de su peso, establece un mecanismo perverso que acaba favoreciendo a los coches más pesados con unos límites de CO2 menos rigurosos que los coches más ligeros.
* La puesta en marcha inmediata de un sistema de sanciones disuasivo que inste a los fabricantes a cumplir la norma: 150 euros por cada gramo de CO2 suplementario para cada vehículo vendido que no cumpla el objetivo. EE.UU. tiene ya un sistema de limitación obligatoria de las emisiones de CO2 de los vehículos comercializados en su país, pero con unas sanciones muy bajas. Esto permite a los fabricantes de automóviles gastarse entre 1 y 5 millones de euros cada año en sanciones, porque les sale más rentable no cumplir y pagar las multas.
* Un límite máximo de emisiones para cada vehículo con arreglo al criterio de área superficial (además del límite global para la flota de cada fabricante): para ilegalizar los vehículos más derrochadores.

E infatti per trovare alcune informazioni, devi cercarle in mezzo agli archivi online di alcuni quotidiani. Un esempio lampante è quanto sta accadendo a Cofrentes, vicino a Valencia. Quarto incidente nell'impianto nucleare in dodici giorni. Il ventisettesimo in 3 anni. Greenpeace pochi giorni fa aveva manifestato per far chiudere l'impianto che, data la lunga serie di incidenti, si dimostra obsoleto e quindi non sicuro per la popolazione. Si registra inoltre un incidente anche nell'impianto di Vandellos. Del materiale radioattivo, cobalto 60 e manganese 54, sono caduti a terra nell'area limitrofa alle cisterne d'acqua per il raffreddamento dell'impianto. Nonostante l'autorità per la sicurezza nazionale tranquillizzi personale e cittadini su eventuali rischi per la salute, resta comunque la perplessità di scoprire così tanti incidenti messi magari in secondo piano da notizie come "Melita a Milano Marittima" o "il lato B di Michelle Hunziker". Dato quindi che come al solito i media non fanno i media, ringrazio ancora l'amico google e wikipedia che ci forniscono una lista di incidenti nucleari noti e meno noti dalla metà dello scorso secolo.

Don't you just love it when the religious Zealotry of the eco-nutters falls on deaf ears?

Why is it that these people always seem to use the fruits of the carbon economy like plastic helmets, synthetic fabrics , ropes and harnesses made from hydrocarbon plastics, and you can bet that the paint the used to deface the smoke stack was the product of a paint factory as well.

i wonder if the courts will seek recompense from these idiots for the cost of the police presence to respond to their vandalism and the cost of removing the graffiti. After all they do bill idiots who cause the emergency services to be mobilised as the result of some stupid stunts.
Sadly the courts up here have show themselves to be rather lacking in backbone of late...
