Meine Kinder heißen Luise und Andreas; mein Mann hat den Namen unseres Sohnes ausgesucht, ich den Namen unserer Tochter. Warum diese Namen? - Andreas hieß der Vater meines Mannes, Luise ist der Name meiner Ur-Großmutter - so einfach war das bei uns ;-)

Bei Promis ist es anders. Vor allem US-Promis übertreiben oft mit dem Wunsch, ihrem Nachwuchs einen unverwechselbaren Namen mit auf den Weg zu geben. Und so tauchen auf den Geburtsurkunden Kreationen auf, die Normalsterbliche den Kopf schütteln lassen. Gwyneth Paltrows Töchterchen Apple oder Michael Jacksons Sohn Prince Michael sind nur zwei wohlbekannte Beispiele dafür.

Ein Weiteres Beispiel für eine prominente Namenseskapade: Nicole Kidman und Keith Urban nannten ihr kürzlich zur Welt gekommenes Töchterchen Sunday Rose. Der Name setze sich aus dem Namen der berühmten australischen Künstlermuse Sunday Reed und dem Mittelnamen Rose von Keiths kürzlich verstorbener Großmutter zusammen.

Während weitere Promi-Kids noch halbwegs gut davongekommen sind – wie Nicole Richies Tochter Harlow Winter Kate, Jessica Albas Tochter Honor, Jennifer Lopez Zwillingstöchterchen Emme oder Cate Blanchetts Sohn Ignatius – hatten andere weniger Glück: So gab es eine Zeit, in der sich Stars bei der Namenswahl von der Obstschale inspirieren ließen. Gwyneth Paltrow etwa wählte für ihr Töchterchen den fruchtigen Namen Apple, Bob Geldof huldigte mit Peaches Honeymoon dem Pfirsich. Was aber zugegebenermaßen bei weitem nicht so schlimm ist, wie die Namen ihrer Schwestern Fifi Trixibelle und Little Pixie...

Dass Julia Roberts ihre neugeborenen Zwillinge nicht Andreas und Luise nennen würden, war allen schon lange vor der Geburt der beiden klar - schließlich haben andere Promi-Kids auch ausgefallene Namen: Das Mädchen heißt Hazel Patricia, der Bub Phinnaeus Walter. Doch auch diese Namen wirken fast fad im Gegensatz zu Katie Prices Tochter, die sie Princess Tiaamii genannt hat...

Segundo uma fonte anónima da produção de 24, existem fortes possibilidades da actriz Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman; Erin Brockovich) fazer uma participação especial na 7.ª temporada da série que começará a ser exibida a partir de Janeiro de 2009 na FOX.

A concretizar-se, esta será a segunda vez que Julia Roberts contracenará com Kiefer Sutherland. Os dois foram protagonistas do thriller Linha Mortal em 1990,  onde iniciaram inclusivé uma relação fora do ecrã. O relacionamento dos dois acabou em 1991, e foi Julia quem colocou um ponto final em tudo, praticamente a caminho do altar. Hoje são amigos.

Graças à greve dos argumentistas, 24 não foi exibida esta temporada. O seu regresso está agora programado para Novembro, altura em que será exibido um telefilme que antecipará a 7.ª season.

When discussing musical preferences with people, I can usually tell a lot about a person's musical knowledge by their reaction when I mention that I am a fan of Lyle Lovett. The most common response I get is "Wasn't he married to Julia Roberts?"

Sadly, it is true that Lovett is probably best known to the general public as Roberts' ex-husband. However, for those who know their music, Lovett is known for his brilliant songwriting and impossible to pin down sound. This year for Christine's birthday I took her to see Lovett at Wolf Trap and it was time and money well-spent.

The Large Band took the stage on-time and burned through a jazzy instrumental. At it's conclusion Lovett took the stage along with a 6 man, 6 woman vocal section and broke into the gospel-influenced "I Will Rise Up"; starting the show on a rousing high note. Lovett has always been virtually impossible to categorize by genre. When he broke big in the 80s he was billed as a country artist but over the years he has broadened his sound to include jazz, gospel, western swing, blues, folk, and bluegrass; with his voice in fine form and his band at the top of their game, they brought out all of these sounds on Wednesday night.

Lovett's band lives up to their billing: a fiddle player, a cello player, two lead guitarists, a mandolin player, a keyboardist, a steel guitar player, string bass player, and a drummer (long-time session man Russ Kunkel) all helped to create a big, rich, driving sound. As if that wasn't enough, Lovett brought out local legend Mike Auldridge of the Seldom Scene (arguably the best bluegrass outfit ever to come out of the D.C. area) to play Dobro for a few songs, concluding with the hilarious "Keep It In Your Pantry." A generous band leader, Lovett allowed most of them a chance to shine on their respective instruments and shared lead parts with three of members of the vocal section. The occasional between-song banter and quirky introductions to some of the songs showed that the bone-dry wit of Lovett's writing is also a part of his personality.

Lovett played numbers from just about every one of his albums, and they all sounded fresh. Highlights from the 2 & 1/2 hour set included "Cowboy Man," "This Old Porch" (co-written with his Texas A & M roommate Robert Earl Keen), "If I Were The Man You Wanted," "I've Been To Memphis," "The Truck Song," "My Baby Don't Tolerate," "Church," "Ain't No Cane,""Give Back My Heart," "That's Right You're Not From Texas," and "San Antonio Girl." He encored with the rousing "I'm A Soldier in the Army of The Lord" and one of my personal favorites, "If I Had A Boat."

Without question, this show makes my top 5 concerts, ever. If you ever get the chance to catch Lovett, don't miss it.

Japan gives $50 million to food crisis

TOKYO - Japan announced Friday it will provide $50 million in new emergency food aid to help developing countries cope with the impact of soaring food prices.

Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura said Tokyo will distribute the aid by October, in addition to $200 million it had already pledged.

Rapidly rising food prices are expected to be a top agenda item at the summit of the Group of Eight industrialized nations, which Japan is hosting July 7-9.

The world is grappling with surging prices of corn, wheat, rice, soybeans and other agriculture products. The price hikes are blamed on a range of factors including high oil prices, changing diets, urbanization, expanding populations, extreme weather, growth in biofuel production and financial speculation.

Rising food prices have set off riots and protests from Africa to Asia and raised fears about a food crisis that could cause millions more people to suffer malnutrition.

Yet ... it has a quirky sense of humor that I found hilarious (CavWife, not so much).  I really appreciated the interplay between Hanks and Hoffman.  Philip Seymour Hoffman was just plain over the top in his role as Gus, an old school CIA guy who is on the outs with the new (Carter era) regime).

Useless Rabbit Trails: At one point I wondered aloud about one character- She really reminds me of Amy Adams.  Good reason, it was Amy Adams.  CavWife was astounded at Julia Roberts' daring bikini scene- daring because she was like 4 months pregnant at the time.  But she didn't look 4 months pregnant, or even pregnant.

Back to the Real Deal: And it had a message need to heed, regardless of whether or not you think we should have gone into Iraq in the first place.  Charlie Wilson was able to sell the Afghan War as a great opportunity to "kill Russians" and further the cause of the Cold War.  He was the right guy in the right place at the right time to increase the funding necessary to help Afghanistan defend themselves from the USSR.  You also see that some of interest was generated from the humanitarian angle.  Wilson was won over after a trip to a refugee camp.  And so were other key people.

After the war, and subsequent fall of the USSR, Charlie Wilson tried to do the right thing: rebuild Afghanistan.  But he could get no money for schools, much less roads.  So, we helped destroy Afghanistan but left them to rebuild.  As he noted, there would be no NY Times to remind them that we had helped them defeat the USSR (actually, would the NY Times tell us that?).  With a population in which 50% of the people were under 14, they sorely needed education and attention from us.  But they didn't, and the Taliban turned their hearts against us.  As the movie ends, there is an earthy quote from Charlie Wilson to the effect that we screwed up the end game.

And this is what some want us to do in Iraq- screw up the end game.  I'm not excited about dumping lots of money into Iraq.  But history teaches us that if we don't try to help them, the next generation will be turned against us- not for removing Sadaam, but for not finishing the job.

I thought this an odd message from Hollywood.  I agree with the message, I was just surprised to hear it coming from  that source.

Last week Julia Roberts was photographed with eco-friendly tote bags at the grocery store (Vons, in California). I'm all for this green act, though I do want to give props out where props are deserved: Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, for starting this trend of tote bags. Trader Joe's has always had reusable bags available for purchase and Whole Foods gives a discount. What do you all think about eco-friendly bags?

Erin Brockovich-Ellis is an American legal clerk who, despite the lack of a formal law school education, was instrumental in constructing a case against the $28 billion Pacific Gas and Electric Company of California in 1993. Since the release of the movie that shares her story and name, she has hosted Challenge America with Erin Brockovich on ABC and Final Justice on Lifetime. She is the president of Brockovich Research & Consulting, a consulting firm.

Her investigation into the Pacific Gas and Electric Company case eventually established that the health of countless people who lived in and around Hinkley, California, in the 1960's, 70's and 80's had been severely compromised by exposure to toxic Chromium 6, which had leaked into the groundwater from a nearby compressor station. In 1996, as a result of the largest direct action lawsuit of its kind, spearheaded by Brockovich and attorney Ed Masry, the giant utility paid the largest toxic tort injury settlement in U.S. history: $333 million in damages to more than 600 Hinkley residents.

Her story is the topic of a feature film, starring Julia Roberts in the title role. The film was nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Writing in a Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. Roberts won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Erin Brockovich. Erin Brockovich herself had a cameo role as a waitress named Julia (in reference to Julia Roberts playing Erin)..

Her parents, one-time actors and playwrights, met while performing theatrical productions for the armed forces and later co-founded the Atlanta Actors and Writers Workshop in Atlanta, Georgia off of Juniper Street in Midtown; the two divorced in 1971. Her mother later married Michael Motes and had another daughter, named Nancy Motes who was born in 1976. Roberts' father died of cancer when she was ten. Well, first of all, don't expect her to much of anything this year with Saturn transiting through her 10th house of Career. In fact, don't expect her to do too much next year either. In fact, expect her to do a Julia Roberts and disappear from the spotlight for awhile because let's face it, as much as she likes being in the limelight, she enjoys being a wife and mother more. In fact, the most I see her doing is more humanitarian work. When she finally does return to the spotlight, Nicole will find that all of the good plum roles for women are not available. I see her in about four-five years moving behind the scenes. That's right, unlike her ex-husband, Tom Cruise, she has nothing to prove. Look for her to direct a documentary or two and also move into writing, producing and directing movies by women for women. As for her husband, Keith Urban, he should be very careful when riding his motorcycle or he could spend Christmas in the hospital with a broken leg. Also, she may need to slow down on her career and spend more time with her hubby.  Look for her career to really build momentum around 2011 but she needs to take care that he does not hold feelings of resentment over her being a bigger star than him. I also see him doing a commercial on the dangers of drinking and driving. Next year, he may move into acting and star in one of those Hallmark Movie-of-the-Week Christmas movies but as for her, I definitely see her directing and possibly writing a book to her baby, perhaps a book of poetry or letters but defintely memoir, which as I said, is going to make a huge comeback for movie stars.

The last time I had to worry about a date was prom, which feels like eons ago. Finding a date was a traumatizing experience for me because I didn't have a boyfriend and was always the one doing the asking.

There is something about the association of dates and events that makes me very queasy. It's the situation where you feel like you are required to bring something and if you don't, you feel horribly out of place. Like Elaine on Seinfeld, you don't want to be caught bringing the lesser babka.

But I digress.

Going alone isn't bad, though, if you call it by another name: stag.

"Going stag" has a connotation of being cool, edgy (according to my definition, at least.  Urbandictionary.com disagrees). Stag says, I will not conform to society's rules, I will be independent and accept whatever craziness rolls my way.

So go ahead and raise your stag flag, you will only be judged as being magnificently awesome.

I know some people say that Hollywood must be running out of new ideas when they do remakes but I personally love them. I remember the feeling I got while I was sitting in the theater and 9 squares appeared on the screen with Marcia, Jan, Cindy, etc; I literally got goose bumps seeing one of my childhood favorite series at the theater! I don’t think the writers are lacking creativity, I think they are going by the old saying “if it’s not broke then don’t fix it” so stick with the hits. The most recent remake is Get Smart…the one part I loved is when he’s walking down the hallway of doors and ends up at the phone booth…ahhh, the memories. So don’t ridicule Hollywood because I’m still waiting for Cameron Diaz to play Jeannie, Jim Carey as Gilligan, Julia Roberts as Mary Tyler Moore and Johnny Depp as Mr. Kotter! Lets keep the 70’s alive…peace out!

Pois bem! Por uma feliz coincidência, eu vi “O Caçadores de Pipas” e “Jogos de Poder” num mesmo final de semana há vários meses atrás! Mas por que a feliz coincidência de assistir estes filmes juntos?

“Jogos de Poder” (Charlie Wilson's War, 2007) é baseado no livro do jornalista George Crile, e conta a história real do congressista norte-americano Charlie Wilson, que nos anos 1980, deu armas ao Afeganistão, financiando a guerra dos afegãos contra a União Soviética. Traz três grandes vencedores de Oscar nos elenco: Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts e Philip Seymour Hoffman.

“O Caçadores de Pipas”, romance escrito por Khaled Hosseini, um best-seller que virou filme, traz a história da amizade de dois meninos quase da mesma idade, que vivem vidas muito diferentes no Afeganistão da década de 1970. Um dos meninos vai para os EUA fugindo da invasão soviética no país, e vinte anos depois retorna à sua terra natal para acertar contas com o passado.

O interessante de assistir estes filmes juntos é que, de alguma forma, um complementa o outro. “Jogos de Poder” mostra como as armas americanas foram parar nas mãos dos afegãos, incluindo suas crianças, e “O Caçadores de Pipas” mostra a conseqüência da invasão soviética e da entrada das armas americanas no país.

Não estou defendendo filme algum, até porque “Jogos de Poder” é um filme denso, confuso, mas historicamente interessante, e “O Caçadores de Pipas” é um filme muito bonito, mas TRISTE! Achei mais triste ainda por saber que a história que se passa no filme realmente aconteceu no Afeganistão, não é ficção! Era um país, teoricamente, civilizado, que se tornou um campo de concentração até os dias atuais.

E o mais incrível que aconteceu foi que eu e a Bia não ficamos nos matando sobre cinema americano x cinema nacional.. filmes independentes e afins.. apenas ficamos conversando civilizadamente sobre os filmes!! Isso foi inédito!! O resultado: direto para o blog, claro!
