Software major Satyam Computer Services has reportedly been banned from doing any off-shore work with the World Bank after forensic experts and bank investigators discovered that spy software was covertly installed on workstations inside the bank's Washington headquarters, allegedly by one or more contractors from Satyam Computer Services.

According to a FOX News report, apart from Satyam, two IP intrusions have been reported from China, and there have been six intrusions in all.

Investigators say that the software, which operates through a method known as keystroke logging, enabled every character typed on a keyboard to be transmitted to a still-unknown location via the Internet.

Upon its discovery, bank officials shut off the data link between Washington and Chennai, where Satyam has long operated the bank's sole offshore computer center responsible for all of the bank's financial and human resources information.

"I want them off the premises now," World Bank President Robert Zoellick reportedly told his deputies. But at the urging of CIO De Poerck, Satyam employees remained at the bank as recently as October 1 while it engaged in "knowledge transfer" with two new India-based contractors.

Satyam is publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange and boasts having two billion dollars in sales and more than 150 Fortune 500 companies as clients.

In 2003, Satyam won a lucrative five-year "sole source" contract to design, write and maintain all of the World Bank's information systems. The contract, which began at $10 million, had grown to over $100 million by 2007. This year, the contract was not renewed. Satyam has declined to comment.

FOX News claims that outsiders have raided the World Bank Group's computer network, one of the largest repositories of sensitive data about the economies of every nation, repeatedly for more than a year.

It is still not known how much information was stolen. But sources inside the bank confirm that servers in the institution's highly restricted treasury unit were deeply penetrated with spy software last April. Invaders also had full access to the rest of the bank's network for nearly a month in June and July.

The crisis comes at an awkward moment for Zoellick, who runs the world's largest and most influential anti-poverty agency, which doles out $25 billion a year, and whose board represents 185 member nations.

This weekend, the bank holds its annual series of meetings in Washington, and just in advance of those sessions, Zoellick called for a radical revamping of multilateral organizations in light of the global economic meltdown.

Zoellick is positioning himself and the bank as an institution that can help chart a new path toward global financial stability. But that reputation, more than ever, depends on the bank's stable information infrastructure.

According to internal memos, "a minimum of 18 servers has been compromised," including some of the bank's most sensitive systems, ranging from the bank's security and password server to a Human Resources server "that contains scanned images of staff documents."

One World Bank director told FOX News that as many as 40 servers have been penetrated, including one that held contract-procurement data. It took ten days for bank officials to detect that they'd been invaded. Once they did, they shut down all external servers, except for e-mail, which it turns out the invaders were already using as their entrance point.

What are key loggers?

Keystroke logging (often called key logging) is a method of capturing and recording user keystrokes. The technique and name came from before the era of the graphical user interface; loggers nowadays would expect to capture mouse operations too. Key logging can be useful to determine sources of errors in computer systems, to study how users interact and access with systems, and is sometimes used to measure employee productivity on certain clerical tasks. Such systems are also highly useful for both law enforcement and law-breaking—for instance, providing a means to obtain passwords or encryption keys and thus bypassing other security measures. Key loggers are widely available on the Internet.

A famous blockbuster hollywood movie released on 1998, starring Bruce Willis, featuring as a deep core driller, sent to space and drill into the surface of the doomsday asteroid that was on collision course with the earth, to plant and detonate a nuclear weapon to split the asteroid into two halves. 

Even-though the movie depicts a high tech masala, the ideology of deflecting the course of asteroids and avoiding the catastrophical collision on the earth by using technology is still on course.  The Association of space explorers, an international group of astronomers and cosmonauts released a recent report Asteroid Threat: A call for Global Response, urging UN/International Institutions to appoint a governing body to identify the Near Earth Object(NEO) asteroids, pinpoint the exact location of the impact,predict the potential devastation, issue warnings of mass evacuation to the city or country under threat, deploy technology and devise plans to deflect the path of the asteroid,funding and assigning the job to specific space agency,point finger for accepting liabilities due to failure in technology or wrong predictions. Whether such a governing body will be formed in-spite of the political, technological and economical risks associated with this - an impossible dream or distant reality, only timeline can answer.

The million dollar question is "What is the technology used to deflect the path of the NEOs?" - Is that same as Hollywood Drama by Bruce Willis?

The strategy for such a technology, conceived during a study carried in 2005 by Ed Lu and Stan Love, both astronauts and founders of B612 Foundation, and published in the November edition of Nature. In order to analyze the performance of Gravity Tractor, a B612 contract was issued to JPL in 2008, to conduct a formal performance analysis.A detailed report, facts and figures can be obtained from B612 foundations website

The study shows that, even a weak gravitational pull from a near by space craft is sufficient to change the orbital path of asteroid, as big as 140 meters across, the size big enough to cause a regional devastation if it hit earth. The conceptual design becoming reality in the near future is the Gravity Tractor.

The asteroids or other foreign bodies when approaches the earth, gets attracted due to the earth's gravitational pull and form new unstable orbital path,revolves around the earth and eventually crash on the earth's surface.

In spite of  the vastness of the space, the foreign bodies were to pass through a small region of space called gravitational keyhole, which is a few hundred kilometers, so as to get pulled by earth's gravity.

Even though the chances of a foreign body's orbit path, fall in line with the keyhole is meagre, the use of a device like gravity tractor has to be deployed much advance in time, before the asteroid is nearing the keyhole. The gravity tractor weighing about 1 ton in weight is positioned about 155 meters away from the asteroid surface and exert a very gentle gravitational force, could alter the asteroid's velocity by 0.22 microns/second per day. But on prolonged exposure of force on a long enough time scale, the course of the asteroid will be changed so that it is avoiding the keyhole entry and subsequent bashing on earth. The success of the gravity tractor is due to its precision of exerting the force on to the asteroid.

Suppose if the hypothetical orbit of the asteroid exists on a direct path to impact, then the use of gravity tractor alone cannot do the trick. Instead scientists proposed a second method called two-punch.

Initially a space craft is crashed directly to the asteroid, that would create a much change in asteroid's orbital path, then the gravity tractor will be employed to move the asteroid away from the collision course.

Sounds interesting. The NEO threat in the nearest future may happen on a Easter Sunday, April 13, 2036, in the name of "Apophis". The chances of Apophis hitting the earth is less than 1 in 45000. However, the Apophis will be in close encounters with earth on Friday, April 13, 2029 - 29,470 Kms from the earth, appearing to the naked eye as a moderately bright point of light moving rapidly across the sky.

NOTE: NASA's collision probability calculation of 1 in 45000, is challenged by a 13 year old German student Nico Marquardt, as 1 in 450. His assumptions indicate that, when the Apophis is nearing earth on 2029, could hit any of the 40,000 Geosynchronous satellites positioned around a band of 30,000 Kms from the earth's surface, causing its orbital path to drift and thereby increasing the possibility of hitting the earth on April 13,2036. Although NASA denied this estimations, the fate of the earth remains a mystery until 2013, by then space observers can predict the exact path of Apophis. 

Pity the Poor Paparazzo- Leave it to some low-life, blood sucking photographer to be involved in a stalking case, only this time the stalker is suing the stalkee.  A celebrity photographer wants to make "paparazzo" a four-letter wordduring his upcoming civil trial against Keanu Reeves.  Attorneys for Alison Silva, Reeves' stalker, contend the words "paparazzo" and "paparazzi" are derogatory and would unfairly prejudice jurors against him (Entertainment: Pity the Poor Paparazzo).  Silva is suing Reeves, claiming the actor caused him to fall while he was taking pictures of the "Matrix" star in his car in March 2007.  Silva's lawyers want him identified as a "photojournalist" or "reporter" when the case goes to trial later this month. Reeves' attorneys counter in documents filed in  Angeles on Thursday that Silva has repeatedly identified himself as a "paparazzo" in interviews and on his Web site.  What, now stalkers are being gender specific when it comes to stalking?  That's like calling a male weirdo a lunatic, and a female weirdo lunotic, but well all know it still means whacko.  Papparazi, paparazzo, you say tomato I say tomawto.  It doesn't really make a difference what that fruitcake calls himself.  He's still a bottom feeder who follows celebrity around, takes their pictures when they aren't looking, then sells them off to some tabloid for a few bucks.  On the other hand, if Keanu was a real man he'd just walk over and punch the guy in his face a few times for being a weirdp.  A black eye and a fat lip can really change a man's perspective when it comes to stalking another man.  Go ahead Neo, get Matrix on his ass, just don't get caught on film doing it.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - What a difference a word makes. Republican John McCain's presidential campaign has nicknamed rival Barack Obama "The One" to ridicule what they see as the Democratic candidate's messianic tendencies.

For McCain himself, Obama is simply "that one."

Referring to an energy bill during Tuesday's debate, McCain said: "You know who voted for it? You might never know."

"That one," he said, pointing to Obama.

McCain was criticized after the first presidential debate on September 26 for refusing to look at Obama.

The Obama campaign seized on Tuesday's remark as further evidence of McCain's contempt for his opponent in the November 4 election.

"Last time he couldn't look at Senator Obama, this time he couldn't say his name," Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said after the debate. McCain did refer to his opponent as Senator Obama at other times in the debate.

Obama's vice presidential running mate, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, was more forgiving.  Continued...

In the movie The Matrix, the hero, Neo, is taken to meet a woman called “The Oracle,” a grandmotherly, chocolate-chip cookie baking prophetess. As Neo is being taken to meet her, he questions Morpheus about whether or not the Oracle is always right or not. Morpheus responds cryptically, telling Neo to avoid thinking about the Oracle in terms of right and wrong. Morpheus tells him to think of her as a guide instead. Though the answer leaves Neo disappointed and confused, it ultimately proves true – The Oracle defies his attempts to categorize her in terms of right versus wrong, but what she tells him guides Neo to be exactly what he needs to become.

Sometimes, I think, we are like Neo. We want to classify things into nice, tidy little boxes of right and wrong, of true and false. We want our God and our Bible and our Jesus pinned down like butterflies in a display case, where we can safely examine them. But maybe, when we do that, we take something away from them. There is something about a live butterfly that cannot be captured by staring at a dead one in a display case.

One of the biggest places where Neo’s mistake becomes most clear, for me, is in the way we try to pin the Bible down. Somehow, in our attempts to prove the Bible as “Right” or “True” we end up putting it down on the same level as everything else vying for our attention. Besides that, what we really are trying to do is say that it is historically accurate, or that it is internally accurate, which are entirely different claims than saying that it is “Right” or “True.” The claim of the Bible’s “Right”-ness or its “Truth”-ness seems, to me, to be missing the point. It, like Neo’s Oracle, keeps defying our attempts at categorizing it. Things like the book of Job, for example, are difficult to classify, since Job exists as a poem and a story. So we can ask questions like “Is Job historically accurate?” or “Are the ideas illustrated by Job’s story really true?” and get answers for them. I feel that anything other than a “Yes” to both questions means that we are losing something; that we are killing the butterfly and pinning it into its display case.

When we try to pin the butterflies in the Bible, the thing that we miss out on the most is the overarching narrative. The reality is that those insects that we are trying to pin down are trying to lead us somewhere. There’s something going on here that goes beyond mere categorization and mere systematic theology. While those things are important and allow us to understand more clearly the mysteries, they themselves are not the point. The point lies in the story. The point lies in that we, as people who hold up the Bible as something authoritative, as something to structure our lives around, are missing out when we forget that this authoritative text functions as our guide. It wants to lead us, like the Oracle lead Neo, into becoming the people that God wants us to be, and ultimately to guide us home to its Author.

We wtorek, wczesnym rankiem, mała planetoida zderzyła się z Ziemią - poinformowała NASA.

Obiekt oznaczony symbolem 2008 TC3 to trzymetrowy NEO (Near Earth Object) odkryty ponad dobę temu przez przegląd nieba o nazwie Catalina Sky Survey. Według wstępnych obliczeń, we wtorek około godziny 4:50 naszego czasu, miał przejść najbliżej Ziemi, w odległości 6500 kilometrów od środka naszej planety. Biorąc pod uwagę, że promień Ziemi wynosi niespełna 6400 kilometrów, praktycznie mogło to oznaczać jego wejście w naszą atmosferę.

Orbita takiego nowoodkrytego ciała jest jednak znana z małej precyzji, więc w zasadzie równie prawdopodobne były scenariusze, w którym ciało zderza się z Ziemia, jak i taki, w którym mija ją w bezpiecznej odległości.

Obiekt poruszał się po trajektorii doganiającej Ziemię, więc jego prędkość w naszej atmosferze mogła być mała. W przypadku zderzenia, mogliśmy mieć do czynienia z potężnym bolidem, który zakończy się spadkiem meteorytu.

Wraz z upływem czasu i doprecyzowaniem orbity okazało się, że zderzenie jest pewne i ma do niego dojść 7 października o godzinie 4:46 naszego czasu. Bolid i eksplozja o sile około jednej kilotony TNT miały pojawić się nad niebem Sudanu.

Wiedząc o tym wydarzeniu Jacob Kuiper, meteorolog z National Weather Service w Holandii poinformował pilotów samolotów rejsowych linii KLM o możliwym bolidzie w tym rejonie. Okazało się, że jeden z pilotów znajdujący się około 1000 kilometrów od potencjalnego miejsca zderzenia, w okolicy wyznaczonej godziny, widział wyraźny błysk w atmosferze, co może potwierdzać zaistnienie zderzenia.

Sto lat temu, doszło do zderzenia Ziemi z obiektem kosmicznym, w efekcie czego mieliśmy do czynienia z jedną z największych katastrof ostatnich lat (tzw. katastrofa Tunguska). Naukowcy zgadzają się, że obiekt, który wtargnął wówczas w naszą atmosferę miał średnicę niespełna 100 metrów.

Obecne szacunki pokazują, że do zderzeń z tego typu obiektami dochodzi raz na sto lub kilkaset lat. Powoli musimy więc zaczynać liczyć się z tym, że wisi nam nad głowami kolejna katastrofa. Czy będziemy mieli tyle samo szczęścia co w roku 1908, kiedy to do zderzenia doszło nad praktycznie niezaludnioną tajgą syberyjską? Czas pokaże

Wydawałoby się, że coś takiego powinno pojawić się w głównych mediach, a tu cicho i głucho. A już sama treść tej wiadomości jest w ogóle dość dziwna.

"trzymetrowy NEO (Near Earth Object) odkryty ponad dobę temu" - to naprawdę szybko biorąc uwagę, jakimi środkami dysponuje przecież NASA...

"Okazało się, że jeden z pilotów znajdujący się około 1000 kilometrów od potencjalnego miejsca zderzenia, w okolicy wyznaczonej godziny, widział wyraźny błysk w atmosferze, co może potwierdzać zaistnienie zderzenia" - Może oznaczać, ale nie musi. Nie ma oficjalnego potwierdzenia, tak? Do dlaczego w nagłówku artykuły napisane jest "planetoida zderzyła się z Ziemią"?

Zastanawiam się, czym tak naprawdę było to całe zdarzenie. W głowie się nie mieści, że podają ludziom tak szczątkowe informacje, w tak przecież ważnej kwestii. Ciekawe co tym razem starają się ukryć.

Karakteren Neo, i filmen The Matrix, blir også oppfordret til å "følge den hvite kaninen" i en av filmens metafysiske oppvåkningsscener. Den hvite kaninen dukker opp i begynnelsen i historien om Alice i Eventyrland, der Alice følger etter kaninen ned i kaninhullet som leder til Eventyrland - et eventyrland som sangeren Grace Slick i Jefferson Airplane, bruker som metaforer om doppåvirkede opplevelser. Herlig, herlig...

Grace Slick ble forøvrig nektet adgang til det hvite hus i 1969 da hun var invitert til et kaffeslabberas (det blir vel den nærmeste betegnelsen man kommer tea party på norsk?), og hadde med seg den politiske aktivisten Abbie Hoffman. Hun hadde planlagt å putte LSD i fascistlederen Richard Nixons te, men de ble dessverre gjenkjent av sikkerhetspersonell før de kom så langt...

So the movie, sucked, it did, which is sad, because the first one was so great. Now, it so happens I have been doing some thinking on how the movie could have been made not to suck, and I believe I have come up with something. Of course this is all sadly after the fact - I very much doubt that Larry and Andy Wachowski will read this post and remake the movie. I mean, let's face it, nobody is reading my entries, let alone the Wachowski brothers (they are too busy speed racing and making movies about letters).

But I did promise you when starting this blog that I would be reducing ten percent of the world's problems, so consider this as an indication of my problem-solving powers. Enough preamble - here is the non-sucky solution:

See, the first Matrix was great because it created a world in which the reality we think we perceive is not really reality at all. It played with the whole idea of what reality is, and we, the audience, really liked that. So, instead of pointless punching, here is what they should have done. The Matrix Reloaded Sugar Pea Edition starts with the Neo/Morpheus gang deciding to upload a virus into the Matrix. The virus will prevent agents from entering the Matrix and allow them to begin the process of deprogramming the people of the Matrix world.

But what happens about 20-25 minutes into the movie (thank you Syd Field of Screenplay), is that the virus doesn't work as it should. The entire Matrix, with the gang caught in it, becomes destablized, and the characters begin to not know where they are and what is real. They get split up, some get killed, everything loses balance - thus recapturing the good stuff of the first Matrix. Then, at the second turning point of the movie, during which Neo is being subjected to a number of classical Greek mythology tortures (having his liver eaten away by vultures while he is tied to a rock, only to have it regrow the next day to be eaten again) - he wakes up in an insane asylum. The doctors tell him he has been there for five years, ever since his wife and daughter died in a car accident with him at the wheel, something like that. He has been there ranting about the Matrix for years until he was given a medication that apparently brought him out of his psychosis.
