Indie Rock Festival é adiado por tempo indeterminado

Pois é coleguinhas, quem estava animado pra assistir The Dandy Warhols (ou qualquer uma das outras bandas que iam estar por lá) no fim de Agosto, pode esquecer.

Por problemas de verba com um dos patrocinadores, a organização achou melhor adiar o festival.Com isso o Indie Rock foi adiado para o fim do ano ou para o começo de 2009.

Agora resta saber se todas as bandas já escaladas e confirmadas terão disponibilidade para a nova data, porém, na minha humilde opinião o line-up dificilmente continuará o mesmo.Mas quem sabe, talvez isso possa dar espaço para outras bandas legais virem pra cá ~~tipo The Kooks~~

When your biggest co-sign is coming courtesy of the late J Dilla, you've got an awful lot of hype to live up to. Fortunately for hip hop, Detroit's Guilty Simpson does exactly that.

With a gravelly voice and hard, slow, sometimes monotonous, straight-to-the-point flow, Guilty doesn't waste any space in his bars, with every word furthering the imagery he's evoking or the slick punch lines he's tossing around. There's a reason Dilla co-signed this cat, and from the very first track we can see why. Madlib takes us back to the Beat Konducta in India on 'The American Dream' and fuses it with gospel and blues as Guilty absolutely bodies the only verse, giving us his take on life with some slick wordplay: "To get paid some go to every extreme, one black will leave another red for green."

Dilla posthumously supplies one of the album's standout beats in I Must Love You, where Guilty accompanies the beat's soft snares and disembodied voices with an unusual-for-him sing-songy hook and some playful vitriol towards the women in his life. The rest of the album's production is handled by Madlib and his younger sibling Oh No andDilla's Detroit beatmaking counterparts in Denaun Porter and Black Milk, who laces the album with it's best track in Run. Guilty and Sean Price (filling one of only a few guest spots) trade verses over a superb adrenaline-inducing beat sandwiched between Black Milk's chorus. Dilated Peoples's DJ Babu provides a track towards the end of the album although Guilty lets us down, showing his one weakness by being tired with the subject matter.

On an album where Detroit beats it's chest with some excellent production and Madlib and Oh No come correct, Guilty never lets a beat overshadow him. The ingenuous wordplay and hardest-out-there flow remain intact on every track, and it's not hard to see why hip hop's prodigal son named this man as one of his favourite rappers.

In the early morning of July 1st 1908 in Siberia, there was a great explosion. Eyewitnesses close to the explosion reported the loud thundering sound moving east to north. The sounds were accompanied by a shock-wave that knocked people to the ground and broke windows hundreds of miles away. The explosion knocked over an estimated 80 million trees over 830 square miles. Estimates of the energy of the blast to be about 1000 times as powerful as the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. It is estimated that the earthquake from the blast would have measured 5.0 on the Richter scale, which was not yet developed at the time. Since there was no discernible impact zone, meteor impact was ruled out, theories for the cause range from black holes, anti-matter, to a UFO crash. Today the more popular theory is whether it was a comet or meteor, it exploded 8 or 9 km over the earth's surface, from immense built up pressure from traveling over 21,000mph into our atmosphere. Later in 1966 Guiness book of world records calculated that if it were to hit earth 4 hours and 47 min later it would have completly destroyed St. Petersburg, Russia! They say the earth gets these mid-sized hits once every 300 years or so. 100 down 200 more to go!

Health update

I had a little visit with my doctor today and I didn't exactly get the news I wanted to hear. She had done some little tests last week and there is a possibility I may have a heart condition. I am not going to go into all the details at the moment as I have to have more tests done etc. But it could be to do with a genetic defect as my mum has had three heart attacks and has heart disease. My cholesterol is through the roof but my diet is very good and I stopped smoking before Christmas. I have been having bad palpitations this past few months and I have been very worried over a few things going on in my life at the moment and other people have been causing me worry too. They have basically made me feel that these health problems I have, don't actually exist. Can you believe how low and selfish that is? Thank god I will never be letting those people into my life ever again. My doctor said the results were actually very bad for someone of my age and that she is extremely concerned now. She gave me a high dose of cholesterol reducing pills for now and I will be having more tests soon to try an identify any problems that may exist. I don't know what's going to happen with me next but its safe to say I feel pretty fucking down at the moment. For the more sensitive blogger, please excuse my bad language. Its just been one thing after another with my spine and now this too. As soon as I know more I will keep you all posted.

Phonte y Big Pooh nos traen su reciente placa "Y Justus para todos", el dúo de Carolina del Norte e integrantes fundadores de The Justus League, hace un buen tiempo (desde el 2001), ya están dando que hablar en el ambiente del Hip Hop norteamericano y también mundial. Pero fue en ABB records cuando "tomaron vuelo" para no detenerse más.

16 tracks con beats característicos de ellos, esos que se pueden denominar "levanta cuellos" y para quien son seguidores, es un disco con una buena producción y una lista de raperos importantes en las colaboraciones para hacer aun más categórico el álbum y que por lo menos a mi, me gusto bastante.

Little Brother "...and justus for all" @@@1/2

Au premier trimestre 2007, les Little Brother avaient sorti, avec l’assistance de DJ Mick Boogie, And justus for all, une mixtape téléchargeable gratuitement et légalement (aussi paradoxal que cela puisse paraître) en vue de leur 3^e album Getback (commercialisé en Octobre). Le but implicite de cette tape digitale était surtout de préparer le public à l’absence de 9th Wonder à la production, puisque Phonte et Big Pooh s’en étaient séparés quelques temps auparavant suite à un divorce artistique. Je me souviens que Phonte avait d’ailleurs raconté dans une interview que l’enregistrement de The Minstrel Show s’est déroulé principalement sans 9th Wonder et qu’ils avaient utilisé ses beats pour poser dessus et les réarranger à leur façon, tout ça sans lui.

Grâce à cette mixtape, la transition stylistique ne s’est pas du tout faite brusquement, c’est ce que nous en avions retenu en gros, et Getback a montré par la suite que les deux MCs ont été capable de conserver leur identité sonore en choisissant divers producteurs comme Khrysis (DJ, producteur et ingé son de la Justus League), Illmind, Nottz, Hi-Tek, etc… Le tour de force était plus que réussi, je m’étais permis de ce fait d’affirmer que le départ de 9th Wonder était la meilleure chose qui soit arrivée aux Little Brother et leur éviter de stagner. Pour marquer le coup, le duo originaire de Caroline du Nord réédite ce mois de Juin …and justus for all en street-album, autrement dit une version ‘no-DJ’ en format CD, avec des modifications par rapport à la tape d’origine.

Ce qui part. Vu qu’il ne s’agit plus d’une mixtape, Mick Boogie n’a plus lieu d’être (et c’est tant mieux remarquez), ni les interludes, ni les freestyles utilisant des instrus existants ou dont les droits n’autorisaient pas l’édition en support physique. Parmi les titres suivants qui ont fini donc à la corbeille : « Bring It On » feat Ray Cash, « Without You » avec Bishop Lamont, « Grown Man » avec Talib Kweli, le « Rise and Fall » feat AZ, « Let It Go » avec les Black Star (ça c’est dommage par contre) produit par 9th Wonder et « One Eleven » de Big Pooh et O Dash qui reprenait un beat de J Dilla (ça aussi c’est dommage de l’avoir jeté). Si jamais vous avez encore cette mixtape sur CD gravé ou quelque part sur votre disque dur, gardez-les s’ils vous ont plu, c’est juste un conseil de ma part.

Ce qu’il reste. Une bonne grosse dizaine de titres dont les très bons « Delusional » avec Oddissee (le MC/producteur de la maison Low Budget), « Can’t Stop Us » feat Chaundon et le street-single « The Pressure ». On y retrouve aussi des tracks ‘stratégiques’ comme « Do It To Death » feat Supastition et Rhymefest produit par Focus (l’un des sbires de Dr Dre) et « Best Kept Secret » feat LEGAGY et produit par RJD2, ainsi que les remixes de « Back At It » feat Cormega, « Life of the Party » avec l’excellent couplet de Skillz (produit par Nottz) et « Cross That Line » avec Kardinal Offishall (qui reste le seul instru de 9th Wonder). Pour rappel, les versions originales de ces trois titres se trouvent sur la compilation (moyenne, faut dire) Soldiers of Fortune du Hall of Justus. Il reste des résidus d'ad-libs qui traînent par-ci par-là, où les artistes balancent des 'shoot out' destinés à Mick Boogie, ils n'ont pas été récurés pour l'occasion pour effacer toutes traces de ce qu'était la mixtape initialement.

Les nouveautés. Une meilleure qualité de son ! ça saute aux oreilles que les sons ont été remasterisés, ça redonne un gain de fraîcheur. Sinon, cinq titres supplémentaires et inédits comblent ceux retirés. C’est là l’intérêt majeur de …and justus for all. On a le droit d’entendre les capacités de chanteur de Phonte sur « Too Late For Us », produit par DJ Spinna et feat Tiye Phoenix des Polyrhythm Addicts (elle aussi au chant et rap). « Cool As A Fan » passe tranquillement, pas comme les beats de Khrysis qui se prend pour Madlib sur « Losin’ It » feat Jozeemo, et sur « Stylin’ » histoire d’épater Oh No qui pose dessus en featuring. « Time of Your Life » achève ce street-album par un morceau légèrement soulful de toute beauté, avec Carlitta Durand (la meilleure chanteuse de la Justus League) et à ses côtés Phonte en mode « Ladies Night » des Kool & The Gang.

This Article appeared in the mail on Sunday with regards to the furore surrounding the vile Iris Robinson.

Northern Irelands first Lady is now being investigated by the police following allegations that she committed a hate crime by launching a withering attack on homosexuality. In an outburst on a live phone in on BBC Radio Ulster on Friday, the 57 year old wife of Northern Irelands First Minister Peter Robinson referred to gays as 'disgusting, loathsome, shamefully wicked and vile' She called homosexuality 'an abomination' but said she knew of a cure. 'I have a lovely psychiatrist who works with me and his Christian background is that he tries to help homosexuals - trying to turn them away from what they are engaged in' she said. Now Andrew Muir, a 31 -year old co-ordinator of gays and lesbians across (county) Down, has made a formal complaint to police. He said last night 'they were reluctant to pursue the matter until I told them it was covered by the hate crimes legislation and I would not be leaving until they took a statement from me'.

Andrew Muir should be applauded for making this official complaint. And maybe the nasty Mrs Robinson will not mind if we borrow her own words to describe herself. Disgusting, loathsome, shamefully wicked and vile!!!!

Listening = pay attention. Yupz bener banget! Hargai orang yang lagi ngomong, maka lo bakalan dapet [baca: megang] apa yang dia maksud ‘n gak bakalan lagi tuh ada yang namanya miskoni alias miskomunikasi. Jangan sampe deh kejadian gw Rabu kemaren ke-ulang lagi..

Bangun pagi.. Hoamph masih ngantuk banget ! Rasanya guling & teman - teman [GuMan] masih manggil - manggil gw buat ngelanjutin tidur.

GuMan : Mitaa.. Jangan tinggalin kami.. Peluk kami.. Peluk peluuukk... Lagian kan ini masih pagii...

Gw : Wah, sori teman - teman! Gw hari ni kebagian kelas di layo. Gw mesti buru - buru...

Sekedar inpo nih, buat ke layo gw harus naek bus dari rumah gw, truz nyambung bus laen. Lama perjalanan kalo lancar kira - kira 50 menit. Itu pun kalo lagi gak apes! Kalo lagi apes, bus-nya udah penuh ato malah dapet bus tua yang sepi peminat, so, bakal lama banget tuh bus jalan kalo nunggu semua kursi ke-isi..

GuMan : Udah deehh nyantai aja.. Tidur 10 menit lagi gak masalah koq..

Gw : [Mulai terpengaruh] Iya juga yaa.. Tidur bentar lagi ah..

Begitu seterusnya.. Akhirnya gw bangun jam 6 kurang. Itu pun setelah bertempur dengan rayuan maut GuMan..

Gw lalu siap - siap, mandi, dst dst... Karena jam gw udah nunjukin jam setengah tujuh kurang [hari ni gw mandi bebek] dan gw belom mulai makan, akhirnya gw mutusin buat sms Tia [temen gw yang biasanya pergi bareng gw ke Layo].

Inpo tambahan, gw biasanya baru nongol dari rumah kalo Tia udah miskol gw karna biasanya kita janjian dulu gitu deh jadi bisa naek bus bareng. Tia juga perginya pagi, jadi gw gak enak kalo hari ni dia harus nunggu gw kelamaan. So, gw sms dia kalo gw belom siap, jadi dia bisa jalan dulu gak pake nungguin gw..

Begitu gw kelar dengan segala macem urusan di rumah. Gw pergi..

Yaa! Di sini lah gw. Di bus Indralaya - Palembang. Ternyata bus udah ampir penuh, begitu dapet bangku, gw berinisiatip buat nelp Tia [gw mikir, koq tuh anak blom dateng yaa..]

Akhirnya gw berhasil nyebrang, setelah ngucapin makasih gw langsung ngacir. Jangan sampe tuh adek inget ma muka gw.. Alesannya simple. Gw malu kalo sampe dia inget "Wah, kk yang gak bisa nyebrang itu kan?!". GW DI-SEBRANG-IN SAMA ANAK SMA!!!

Hmm.. betapa panjang perjalanan ke Madang hari ini.. Padahal biasanya dari rumah gw paling 10 menit juga udah nyampe.. Gak lagi - lagi deh...

Foreign Beggars - stray point agenda

The Second Installation from the Beggar Camp, ‘Stray Point Agenda’ has a more introspective tone than their debut ‘Asylum Speakers’. A darker, edgier beast than its predecessor, with featured production by Stones Throw protégé, Oh No and Ninja Tunes DJ Vadim, the release re-establishes the Foreign Beggars benchmark, but with a lyrical maturity that puts the album in a more progressive context. With rappers Orifice and Metropolis dealing with a variety of subversive topics from conscious socio-political realism to sci-fi horror core, the listener is confronted with their typically schizophrenic approach to life, love, spirituality and death. With featured guest spots from Dr. Syntax, Skrein, Dubbledge, Graziella, Wildchild and Dudley Perkins, the album spans the spectrum of rhyming styles from straight punchline to complex multi-syllabic flow patterns, doing justice to Dag Nabbits trademark versatility of dark electro synthesized basses, intricate sample work and filthy drums on futuristic soundscapes…disgusting!

Il y a une vie après les Lootpack. Après les innombrables coups de génie du producteur Madlib (qu’on ne présente plus), Wildchild le MC a vécu ces dernières années au travers d’apparitions sur les divers projets de chez Stones Throw et des maxis réservés aux spécialistes. Mais les assidus qui suivent l’actualité du label californien et les artistes qui y gravitent autour attendaient tranquillement ce Jack Of All Trades (On The Corner/Nocturne), qui cache une surprise pour nous européens : un second opus bonus, Intellectual Intellect. Cool !!!

L’album qui nous intéresse, Jack Of All Trades, est produit par Madlib dans sa majeure partie, son frère Oh No, mais aussi la figure montante de Detroit Black Milk, puis Kev Brown, Georgia Ann Muldrow (sur les psychédéliques et funky « Fresh Air » et « Day N’ The Funk »),… « Aïe aïe aïe » se diront les fins connaisseurs en voyant les participants à la réalisation, et même chose après avoir écouté Wildchild dessus, parce qu’il fait mal au micro ! Les coups d’éclat s’amplifient avec la multiplication des guests, comme les mythiques Souls of Mischief sur le planant « How We Do », les Frank N Dank sur la connexion « Ox to the D » et l’extraordinaire « The League » qui réunit les légendes vivantes Masta Ace, MC Lyte, Percee P & Special Ed. On en restera avec le remix signé Kev Brown, le fantasme que cette association puisse pourquoi pas déboucher un jour sur un super groupe, et l’impression d’avoir écouté un disque vraiment à part. Préférences particulièrement pour sa performance solo sur « Love At 1st Mic » et le « Rest N' Beats » en hommage à J Dilla.

Place au gâteau à la cerise avec Intellectual Intellect, la ‘face B’ spéciale réservée uniquement pour la sortie européenne. Et l’on comprend mieux l’objet de ce privilège en tendant l’oreille et en se penchant de près sur le tracklisting qui décrit ses passages dans les divers pays de notre cher Vieux Continent, avec un passage nusoul par Paris avec « French Connexion » (feat Lehahia). Ces escales musicales jouent surtout avec les ambiances soulfuls et jazzys, des anecdotes racontées en rimes. Voilà pour le tour d’horizon de l’Europe décrit par Wildchild.

Black Milk presents "Caltroit" @@@1/2

Suite au succès viral de la mixtape téléchargeable Caltroit, la rencontre entre Bishop Lamont et Black Milk A.K.A. la nouvelle génération arrivant respectivement de Detroit et Los Angeles, le petit label underground Fat Beats a saisi l’opportunité de distribuer cette mixtape-mp3 (à l’origine mixée par DJ Warrior) sous forme d’un CD audio classique.

Est-ce qu’il est vraiment utile de présenter à nouveau Black Milk des BR Gunna, l’étoile naissante de Motor City qui a fait connaître son talent de rappeur/producteur avec Popular Demand, et Bishop Lamont, la nouvelle coqueluche de Dr Dre qui génère un buzz incommensurable sur le marché des mixtapes depuis des mois (grâce à Nigger Noize et Pope Mobile). La réponse se trouve dans la question.

Les hip-hopers avertis qui ont downloadé la tape sur le Net remarqueront plusieurs changements minimes par rapport à cette version album CD : en premier lieu, le titre sur la pochette (devenu Black Milk presents sans le nom de Bishop Lamont), et secondement une tracklisting remaniée logiquement sans le « Movie Star » de Focus (un des producteurs de l’équipe Aftermath) et « Ret 2 Go » (featuring les rappeuses Ms Jade, Lady of Rage) produit par Oh No.

Tour d’horizon de ce best of both worlds de la scène hip-hop de Californie et de Detroit, avec en complément une pléthore de rappeurs, que ce soient des figures mainstream ou des MCs underground à la réputation sans faille. La liste de featurings est incroyablement hallucinante : Busta Rhymes, Stat Quo, Guilty Simpson, Royce Da 5’9, Guilty Simpson, Illa J (le frère de J Dilla), Elzhi et T3 des Slum Village, Phat Kat, Planet Asia, Ras Kass, Ya Boy, Glasses Malone, Mistah FAB et bien d’autres encore.

Comme convenu, c’est Black Milk qui gère la majeure partie des productions de Caltroit, en nous entrant directement dans le sujet sur le morceau éponyme « Caltroit » (feat Indef et Chevy Jones), un mélange entre le son californien (des pianos à la Dr Dre) et un beat typique de Detroit. Évidemment, Bishop Lamont éclipse son comparse dès qu’il s’agit de cracher les rimes, on comprend mieux l’engouement autour de ce jeune prodige qui a remplacé The Game dans le cœur du bon docteur.

D’ailleurs, parmi les autres producteurs présents ponctuellement, on retrouve la clique d'Aftermath Records avec Focus à la production de « Bad Girl », où Bishop fait la différence encore une fois face à Black Milk qui essaie d’imiter le flow syncopé de T3. DJ Khalil quant à lui livre un instrumental carrément énorme, aussi puissant que celui que « I Still Kill » qu’il a livré à 50 Cent. Stat Quo (dont on va finir par en avoir marre d’attendre son Statlanta) lâche dessus un couplet du tonnerre et le trop rare Dr Dre en personne achève le titre par une brève outro en guise de ‘shoot-out’. Mo-nu-men-tal.

Là où Black Milk excelle, c’est naturellement au niveau de ses productions. Le très lourd « Goatit » (feat Phat Kat et Elzhi), s’achevant crescendo sur des BPM accélérés bouncy à souhait, enchaîne sur un autre morceau encore plus lourd, « Go Hard » avec ses caisses claires qui défoncent littéralement, tout comme les perfs monstrueuses de Ras Kass et Royce. La règle du ‘jamais deux sans trois’ s’applique ici puisqu’arrive après le banger « Mouth Music » : beat léger très ‘fuck music’ hyper-efficace, du xylophone pour donner un soupçon d’exotisme, des nappes de synthés plongeant dans les graves, chuchotages indécents, les apparitions dans le club de Busta Rhymes et Guilty Simpson là pour choper de la femelle.

Dans la seconde partie, il y a du bon, du correct et du moins bon. « Juggernautz » (feat Young Dre, Glasses Malone & 40 Glocc) n’obtient que de maigres suffrages et Ras Kass rappelle pourquoi il manque de goût pour choisir sur quoi poser ses vers (« I Need It »). Le producteur hétéroclite Jake One se fait remarquer sur ce Caltroit en conviant un casting spécial San Francisco all-starr (Ya Boy et Mistah FAB et Planet Asia) et le petit frère de Jay Dee fait une bonne apparition sur « If You Ready » aux côtés de T3 des Slum Village. Dommage que Kardinal Offishal vienne tout gâcher, il aurait fallu peut-être remixer ces tracks (voyez-là une simple suggestion).

Pour le reste, les beats et les couplets passent sans mal (« Bang This Shit Out », « Ape Shit »…). On retient particulièrement « Not The Way » qui apporte une touche de nusoul et le « Spectacular » finish, où Busta Rhymes et Illa J reviennent rejoindre Black Milk et Bishop Lamont pour notre plus grand plaisir. Grosse, grosse mixtape, que dire de plus.

Peanut Butter Wolf "2K8 B-Ball Zombie War" @@@@

Au tour de Peanut Butter Wolf, producteur et patron du label indépendant Stones Throw, de s’occuper de la bande-son de la franchise NBA 2K8, en partenariat avec Decon et 2K Sports. Avis à tous les férus de hip-hop alternatif et de genres nouveaux, 2K8 B-Ball Zombie War est la soundtrack de jeu vidéo de basketball la plus décalée et la plus zarbi qui existe. Qui plus est, si vous êtes un abonné de la maison Stones Throw, vous aurez droit à une ration d’exclusivités signées Guilty Simpson, MED, Madlib,, Percee P, J-Rocc... enregistrées ou compilées spécialement pour l’occasion.

Je crois que le mieux pour détailler ce disque, c’est de dévoiler le tracklisting en y rajoutant des annotations. (J’avais déjà utilisé ce schéma pour Peacemaker 2 de Tony Touch en 2004 mais la chro n’a jamais été publiée ni sauvegardée).
