Assalaamu ‘alaikum wr. wb.
Yth. Pak Toto Isteri saya, usia 23 th, sedang hamil muda sekitar 1,

Assalaamu 'alaikum wr. wb.

Yth. Pak Toto Isteri saya, usia 23 th, sedang hamil muda sekitar 1,5 bulan.

Guna menetralisir asam lambung, minumlah madu.

Thousands of research studies have documented how the oils known as omega-3 fatty acids can benefit

Thousands of research studies have documented how the oils known as omega-3 fatty acids can benefit the cardiovascular system, particularly among people diagnosed with coronary artery disease. The incredible volume of research on this topic creates difficulty for many physicians and patients to stay current with findings and recommendations related to these oils.

In the March issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, contributors briefly summarize current scientific data on omega-3 fatty acids and cardiovascular health, focusing on who benefits most from their protective effects, recommended guidelines for administration and dosing, and possible adverse effects associated with their use.

Two omega-3 fatty acids that have been associated with cardiovascular benefit, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), are found in fish oils. The best source for DHA and EPA are fatty coldwater fish such as herring, mackerel, salmon and tuna. Fish oil supplements or algae supplements also can provide omega-3 fatty acids.

Author James O'Keefe, M.D., a cardiologist from the Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, Mo., cites the results of several large trials that demonstrated the positive benefits associated with omega-3 fatty acids, either from oily fish or fish oil capsules.

"The most comelling evidence for the cardiovascular benefit provided by omega-3 fatty acids comes from three large controlled trials of 32,000 participants randomized to receive omega-3 fatty acid supplements containing DHA and EPA or to act as controls," explains Dr. O'Keefe. "These trials showed reductions in cardiovascular events of 19 percent to 45 percent. Overall, these findings suggest that intake of omega-3 fatty acids, whether from dietary sources or fish oil supplements, should be increased, especially in those with or at risk for coronary artery disease."

How much fish oil should people attempt to incorporate into their diets? According to Dr. O'Keefe, people with known coronary artery disease should consume about 1 gram per day, while people without disease should consume at least 500 milligrams (mg) per day.

"Patients with high triglyceride levels can benefit from treatment with 3 to 4 grams daily of DHA and EPA," says Dr. O'Keefe. "Research shows that this dosage lowers triglyceride levels by 20 to 50 percent."

About two meals of oily fish can provide 400 to 500 mg of DHA and EPA, so patients who need to consume higher levels of these fatty-acids may choose to use fish oil supplements to reach these targets.

Dr. O'Keefe also notes that research supports the effectiveness of combining the consumption of fish oil with the use of cholesterol-lowering medications called statins. Combination therapy with omega-3 fatty acids and a statin is a safe and effective way to improve lipid levels and cardiovascular health beyond the benefits provided by statin therapy alone. Blood DHA and EPA levels could one day be used to identify patients with deficient levels and to individualize therapeutic recommendations.

Dr. O'Keefe found little evidence of serious adverse effects associated with fish oil consumption. "In prospective placebo-controlled trials, no adverse effects were observed to occur at a frequency of more than 5 percent, and no difference in frequency was noted between the placebo and omega-3 fatty acid groups," he says.

The most commonly observed side effects include nausea, upset stomach and a "fishy burp." Taking the supplement at bedtime or with meals, keeping fish oil capsules in the freezer or using enteric-coated supplements may help reduce burping and upset stomach symptoms.

I decided to post about Nordic Naturals Arctic Cod Liver Oil because I’ve tried many different

I decided to post about Nordic Naturals Arctic Cod Liver Oil because I've tried many different types of oils and pills to get more omega-3 into my diet and this is the first one that's not only decent-tasting, but doesn't upset my stomach. It comes in two sizes: 8 fl.oz and 16 fl.oz, and four flavors: Lemon, Orange, Peach & Strawberry.

I buy the 8 oz. size. It comes in a dark blue bottle, which I like - more harmful light-blocking. I also like the fact that I finish it faster. I think if I had a family and wanted all my kids to take it each morning in their O.J., I'd buy the 16 oz. size to save a bit of money, but the savings isn't big enough to make me buy the larger size now, when it's just me taking it... [$18.99 vs. $33.99 on average]. I use the orange-flavored one as part of my 'mud' in the morning and because I also add unsweetened cranberry juice and orange juice to the mix, I don't taste the cod liver oil at all. I've taken it on it's own, too, and was surprised at how well the fishy taste is masked by the orange and rosemary they add to it. It's a far cry from the stuff my mother used to make us take when we were little! lol...

So far the quality has been consistent [I've tried taking gel caps before and it would be hit or miss on quality - some would be fine, other bottles would make me physically ill]. I store my cod liver oil in the fridge and it's still liquid at that temperature, so it's still easy to take and I feel better knowing it won't spoil as quickly. I also take a full tbsp vs. the tsp they recommend and it lasts me about a month - so if you only take the tsp they recommend, it'll probably last 2-3 months. I don't think any of us get enough omega-3 from diet alone. I don't know about you, but I can't eat cold-water fish at every meal. That would get way too expensive.

Now that I know there are more flavors out there, I'm going to try them. If any one of the other flavors happens to be repulsive for some reason, I'll post again and let you know.

A lot of patients come in trying to lose weight by doing low-fat diets which at first sounds logical

A lot of patients come in trying to lose weight by doing low-fat diets which at first sounds logical. BUT… fats are essential for optimal brain function. What we really need to be focusing on is the type of fat we eat. There are two main families of fats- saturated and unsaturated. The saturated oils, in general are detrimental to health and should be avoided. The unsaturated fats break down further into four major subcategories: Omega 3, 6, 7, and 9. These four subcategories are in a fine balance in the body. In general, the average American’s body is way out of balance- too high on the omega 6, not enough of the omega 3. Meat products are really high in the omega 6 oils leading to inflammation in the body. Inflammation has in recent years been found to be the underlying cause of heart disease and cancer—the two main causes of health-related deaths in the US. Not to mention other inflammatory conditions such as arthritis being on a steady rise. In order to shift the balance, we need to be eating way more of the omega 3s (flax oil is an excellent source!) and less of the omega 6s (meat, dairy, and olive oil).

The other thing that needs to be said about healthy oils is: the temperature makes a big difference! Oils are stable only up to certain temperatures and above that, they become rancid and hence toxic to the body. For example, olive oil which is now thought of as the best oil is actually good at low-medium temperature cooking but at higher heats as in for stir-frying, deep frying, high heat baking, the oil becomes unstable and hence causes more problems in the body. Flax, hemp, and pumpkin seed oils (all high in omega 3s) are no-heat oils, which means you cannot use them for cooking, instead they are best on salads. Coconut oil is actually one of the most stable oils and can be used in everything. It is great for high heat cooking and also for low-medium heat cooking. It is one of the most versatile oils known and some of the eastern cultures (like that of South India which use it in abundance, live long healthy lives.

7dpIUI#2 - Distracting myself by researching prenatal vitamins

Well, the first 5 days after my IUI went quickly - probably because of work and the weekend trip, bu

Well, the first 5 days after my IUI went quickly - probably because of work and the weekend trip, but now I am impatient. I don't want to take a HPT because I know it's too early, but I feel twinges near my right ovary and also had this sense that AF was about to appear - so I don't know what's going on. It is fairly typical that maybe 3-4 days before AF, I start to feel more full and more pressure in the abdomen. I've been doing things to distract myself, including doing research online about prenatal vitamins.

My main question is whether there any major benefit from using prescription prenatals to over the counter. My sense is only from a cost perspective. If you can charge prenatal vitamins to insurance, then that's a financial benefit. But otherwise, you seem to be able to get the same things in OTC as prescription. I found this article here: http://pregnancy.emedtv.com/prenatal-vitamins/prescription-prenatal-vitamins.html Basically, prescription has greater folic acid content (you need a prescription to have 1mg folic acid in a pill), stool softener, and Omega-3's (specifically DHA). All of these things, you can get separately and increase the dosage to bump up whatever you need. I suppose the other thing is quality of vitamins (this is an issue no matter what you put in your body, prescription or OTC) and how it affects the child/your body. I suppose you don't want to get any ole stool softener. I guess the one in a prenatal is designed not to have any ill effects on child development.

So anyway, last night, I was on a mission to get Omega-3's. I ended up going to Whole Foods in search of an Omega-3 vitamin pill. In my reading about prenatal vitamins and pregnancy, I saw that Omega-3's are needed for brain, nervous system and retinal development. I'm a vegetarian so don't get Omega-3 fatty acids from fish and must be extremely deficient in this area. I'm taking New Chapter Every Woman pills and also a folic acid supplement - so I think I have the basics. The other key pieces are calcium (I think I eat enough cheese to cover that) and iron (I should increase my leafy greens).

Anyway, I went to Whole Foods and looked at their vast selection of Fish Oils (cod liver, gross), Flaxseed, Omega-3 pills (from fish, flaxseed, borage), etc... Normally, I avoid salespeople, but I had no idea what to look for. I had seen one brand, Coromega, that claimed to have greater absorption and taste better. I definitely want to avoid fish burps. A saleswomen came up to me and asked if I needed help - and I said YES! She was very helpful, had a good attitude, and recommended Nordic Naturals. She was a wealth of knowledge. There are Omega-3, -6 and -9 fatty acids. We get Omega-6's from all types of oil (sunflower, olive, etc), so those are not as crucial to supplement as Omega-3's.

The two active ingredients of Omega-3 fish oil are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). [Flaxseed oil has ALA's, but the body has to convert it to DHA and EPA, which is not efficient.] Studies say that you should get more EPA than DHA in a pill, and that you should get at least 300mg (the one I'm taking has 330mg of DHA and 220mg of DHA). I don't know if there is a better/worse time in the day to take these pills or any complementary foods you should/shouldn't take them with. I probably should run to the herbalist/vitamin store just down the street to ask them.

This afternoon, I was really tired. It's Labor Day, so I spent part of the day kind of screwing around, and the rest of it here at home. I was SO tired around 2pm. My legs were sore - like I had done a big hike, which I hadn't. I took what I thought would be a short nap, but then woke up around 6:30p. I think the weekend trip took a lot out of me though it didn't feel strenuous at the time. I have been eating the crappy snacks that we bought for the roadtrip (Wheat Thins, etc), so I'm thirsty because of all the salt.

Drinking my herbal tea and trying to catch up on work before tomorrow. Watching the Murder, She Wrote marathon on the Hallmark channel :) I will do more research on Calcium and Iron needs later: http://parenting.ivillage.com/ttc/ttcprep/0,,r45z,00.html

Sometimes people wonder about the health benefits of the black walnut versus the more common English walnut, so I'm going to provide you some quick info.

The English walnut contains more omega 3 fatty acids per ounce than the black walnut (2.6 grams versus .57 grams). To promote heart health, increasing your omega 3 fatty intake is a good step to take, so opt for the English walnut (which is easier to find anyway).

Another component to keep in mind:

The type of omega 3 fatty acid contained in walnuts is ALA (alpha linolenic acid). The conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA (the two types of omega 3 fatty acids linked to health benefits) is inefficient.

It's Labor Day weekend. BF and I went away for a Friday/Saturday trip. It was a nice distraction. I have been feeling some twinges on the right side of my abdomen - near my ovary, but I don't want to read too much into it. Of course, that is easier said than done. There are various websites where women posted what their "symptoms" (if any) were during the 2WW and I'm comparing what I'm feeling to what they felt.

What I should be doing instead is gardening or cleaning the house or going for a walk. Anything! My latest "obsession" is trying to figure out what vitamins I should be taking. I am on New Chapter Every Woman vitamins and also folic acid. But then I read that Omega-3 and -6 fatty acids are good too. I went to the vitamin store to buy some, but wow there are so many varieties. Flaxseed oil. Fish oil. Some other kind of oil too. I have no idea.

My cousin's wife is pregnant - just about 6 months now. She is very relaxed, which is great. She's been wanting to have kids for a while, so she is quite happy. We went to a kid's clothing store today, and she was commenting how much cuter girls' clothes are than boys'. She did say something that surprised me: she thought she could drive herself to the hospital once her water broke! I'm sure that's *possible* but really not ideal. Well, I don't know how you "learn" these things except talking to others and being practical. Okay, off to pull weeds. :)

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are a responsibility in everyone’s diet, for both manlike and ani

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are a responsibility in everyone's diet, for both manlike and animal. However, the embody cannot display EFAs on its own, so it staleness be additional to the fasting apiece day. The digit most commonly famous greasy acids are finish 3 (linoleic acid) and finish 6 (alpha-linoleic acid). The diets of our pets, same people, run to allow more finish 6 greasy acids kinda than finish 3. This is an disequilibrium that needs to be reinforced upon.

Omega 3 greasy acids are primary as they support with the comely manufacture of radiophone membranes, cardiovascular functions, supply the covering of the digestive tract, and impact to ready your pet's wound and cover smooth, fleecy and shiny. Another primary duty of finish 3 greasy acids is that they impact to turn inflammatory problems in the body. If you encounter your pet's cover is dulled and breakable or if he/she tends to hit parched wound and irritate a lot, it haw be owed to a demand of this portion greasy acid.

There are assorted types of primary greasy Elvis supplements that are available, ease which category you opt to attach your canid or cat's fasting crapper be a taste of a dilemma.

Pure existence oils much as flax oil, daytime herb oil, herb lubricator or a combining of existence oils is a beatific deciding to seek omega-3 fats. These should be "cold-pressed" oils, as anti to oils that are typically extracted with chemical solvents. The difficulty with existence oils is that animals hit a harder instance converting the greasy acids to a modify prizewinning utilised by the animal's system.

Fish oils, much as salmon oil, flatfish liver oil, or owed liver lubricator are more easily regenerate and utilised by an animal's body. The downside is that seek oils ofttimes allow noxious toxins, including broad levels of chanceful PCBs, dioxins and noticeable levels of mercury. Farmed salmon is the poorest for dirtying and contains inferior finish 3 acids than disorderly salmon. At inform nearly 30% of every seek are farmed, with salmon existence in the 90% farmed range. As well, farmed salmon are ofttimes carriers of disease and parasites. When supplementing your pet's fasting with seek oils, opt oils that become from disorderly sources, not farmed.

There are also amalgamated seek and existence lubricator supplements available. These ofttimes allow a variety of salmon or owed liver lubricator and flax, herb or another much oils that wage a variety of 3 to 4 parts finish 3 oils to 1 conception finish 6 oils. Giving your birdlike a compounding fish/plant attach haw be a beatific deciding to consider, as they should allow less toxins since they are not strictly seek oils, ease still should be meliorate assimilated by the animal's embody than straightforward existence oils.

Getting decent primary greasy acids is grandness in parcel acne. It’s these greasy acids that support curb the creation of androgens – the hormones that inflate during the teen-age times, which causes immoderateness sebum lubricator to foul your material follicle and advance to creating your acne.

The threesome greasy acids you requirement regular are omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9. You requirement more finish 6, olive oil, than finish 3.

When you are nonstandard in the primary greasy acids, you module have,

*  Sebaceous glands filler increase

Eating primary oils is needed to wage the correct oils that are utilised in the sebaceous glands. These oils crapper become from straightforward seedlike oils or from oils in limited foods much as nuts and seeds.

Use flax cum lubricator (omega-3 oil) and olive lubricator (omega-6 oil) in your salad. These are the prizewinning oils to verify and are titled polyunsaturated greasy acids. The another lubricator that is modify meliorate for you is titled monounsaturated greasy acid, omega-9. This lubricator is institute in avocados.

Most diets grouping hit include an immoderateness of omega-6 oils, so mostly probable you requirement to centre on effort more omega-3 oils into your diet.

You crapper intend omega-3 lubricator from,

*  avocados

*  benni seeds

*  squash seeds

*  walnuts

* Stygian foliaceous naif vegetables (spinach, condiment greens, kale)

*  Graminaceae germ oil

*  salmon

*  sardines

*  tunny tuna

Or, you crapper verify digit to 4 containerful of flax cum oil, omega-3 oil, apiece day. This module provide you the turn of omega-3 lubricator that your embody needs to turn or decimate acne blemishes.
*  benni oil

*  pecans

*  pistachio nuts

Taking around 1 ฝ containerful of olive lubricator per period module provide you the omega-9 lubricator that your embody needs.

Fish Oils

In constituent to supplying your fasting with omega-3 and omega-6 oils, you requirement to attach your fasting with seek oils. Fish lubricator contains EPA and DHA greasy acids.

Normally, enzymes in your embody fortuity downbound omega-6 into EPA and DHA greasy acids.

*  Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA)

*  Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA)

These digit greasy acids yet modify into prostaglandins.

What are prostaglandins?

Prostaglandins are chemical hormones that become from omega-3 and omega-6 oils and that help,

According to investigate accumulation publicised by the dweller Journal of Clinical Nutrition, indiv

According to investigate accumulation publicised by the dweller Journal of Clinical Nutrition, individuals that allow lawful lawful intake of Omega 3 crapper turn the venture of hunch move (coronary thrombosis) by up to cardinal percent. Such hortative programme has generated a beatific tending of welfare in Omega 3 of late.

What is Omega 3?

Omega 3 is, in fact, a polyunsaturated greasy Elvis which, as it passes finished the limentary supply (digestive biome finished the manlike body), breaks downbound existing cholesterin and deposits a minutely anorectic obstruction to preclude its reformation. Omega 3 entireness to fisticuffs again the capital cholesterin offender that causes action of the blood. These clots then country murder vessels feat hunch attacks or, if they accomplish the brain, strokes.

Omega 3 is most commonly related with the oils institute in fish. Best famous sources are mackerel, trout and salmon though the oils crapper be extracted from albescent fish; and the liver of the Cod is specially flush as well.

The dweller Heart Association recommends a lawful intake of 1000 mg. of Omega-3 for mensurable upbeat benefits in cardiovascular care. There are different structure of including Omega 3’s in your fasting so you requirement not vexation if you are not a bounteous follower of fish.

Sources of Omega-3’s

The most manifest method, intake fit seek regularly, isn’t applicatory for everybody, as again – not everyone enjoys fish, whatever grouping are modify hypersensitised to it and, of course, vegetarians and vegans don’t take fish. Fortunately there are a panoramic arrange of supplements on the mart for those people.

The most ordinary modify of attach is the capsulise formulated from amassed oils derivative from those seek that hit the broad Omega 3 levels. Generally, the paper module allow something around banknote proportionality from that maker (fish) with the equilibrise prefabricated up of another sources of greasy acids.

Omega 3 greasy acids are not limited to seek oils - they crapper also be institute in a sort of existence extracts as well. The prizewinning maker of Omega-3 is alpha-linolenic Elvis (ALA) which includes oilseed (linseed) oil, rapeseed (canola) oil, chia seeds, walnuts and walnut oil, the sea plant, purslane, grass-reared meat, and Stygian naif foliaceous vegetables. These items are widely institute in upbeat matter stores and in uncolored upbeat markets.

The beatific programme of Omega 3 upbeat benefits goes global

Omega 3’s crapper also be institute in a panoramic arrange of another foods including vegetables and computerized foods; however, the levels are worthless and wage no momentous upbeat benefits. Vegetarian Omega-3 supplements are available, commonly as oilseed (linseed) oil.

EPA and DHA Omega 3 are institute nearly only in flora plants and animals. They are synthesized by phytoplankton, which are exhausted by fish, mollusks and crustaceans and thusly amassed in the flora matter chain.

Alternative sources of Omega-3 ALA and Omega-3 EPA and DHA are existence unnatural for viability. ALA from perilla is already acquirable in whatever countries and krill, shrimp-like creatures galore in the polar Ocean, are existence targeted by a river consort as a forthcoming Omega-3 source. Krill lubricator contains 25% Omega-3 EPA and DHA. Genetic change is also existence explored, with digit research inserting genes which module display long-chain Omega-3 polyunsaturates into existing oilseed varieties. Another uses factor designate profession to direct modify Omega-6 polyunsaturates to their Omega-3 counterparts.

As the upbeat estimation of the Omega-3s grows, matter manufacturers hit explored the possibleness of invigorating routine foods with Omega-3s. Omega-3 foodstuff are progressively available; for example, clams secure with 13mg of Omega-3 DHA per swing is today acquirable in New Sjaelland and Australia. Malaya has a pyrotechnic secure with vitamins, minerals and both Omega-3 and Omega-6 EFAs and a similarly secure marge serves as a dustlike accompaniment.

In Sweden, a baritone fruitful liver upside is enriched with Omega-3, shackle and vitamins. The land crapper acquire production juices secure with milk, fiber, vitamins and Omega-3, and probiotic nutrition equal bars, soups and milkshakes with Omega-3s. Finns mart a blackcurrant humour with additional Omega-6 and Omega-3 as ALA. This itemize is by no effectuation comprehensive, specially as it does not allow the crescendo sort of infant milks, foods and supplements with additional Omega-3 DHA.

As the advantages of lawful intake of Omega 3 embellish more acknowledged in North America, the matter processing and caregiver industries will, no doubt, place more try and resource into making these different supplements more pronto available. The benefits of Omega 3 module move to acquire in grandness as the accumulation ages and looks for structure to reassert flourishing and astir lifestyles. Currently, Omega 3’s are cushy sufficiency to acquire from online companies and special pharmacies but it sure won’t be daylong before Americans module be healthy to opt the attach that suits them prizewinning from the shelves of topical supermarkets and lavatory stores.

SMA - Gruppo Auchan - Via Anagnina - Ore 18.00
Tuuuu - Tuuuu - Tuuuu

Omega-3 fatty acids are a family of polyunsaturated fatty acids that provide the basic building bloc

Omega-3 fatty acids are a family of polyunsaturated fatty acids that provide the basic building blocks of cells in the body.

Omega-3 fatty acids contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is processed by the body into eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

EPA is very effective in combating inflammation and protecting against cancer, as well as preventing and managing cardiovascular disease.

DHA plays an important role in vision and brain function as well as keeping the heart healthy.

The best sources of EPA and DHA are cold water oily fish such as wild salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies and sardines.

Benefits

Allergies – Omega 3 can interfere with the development of pollen & mold allergies in young dogs

Arthritis – Omega 3 can help manage arthritis by suppressing the inflammatory reaction that occurs in arthritic joints.

Brain function – DHA is instrumental in the function of brain cell membranes, which are important for the transmission of brain signals.

Cancer – Omega 3 inhibits tumor growth and metastasis (the development of secondary malignant growths).

Circulatory and heart health – Omega 3 are known to decrease levels of triglycerides & cholesterol in the blood and improve general cardiovascular health.

Diabetes – fish oils can increase insulin sensitivity, while ALA may slow cataract development.

Glossy coat – Omega 3 fatty acids are essential for a shiny, glossy coat.

Healthy skin - Much veterinary research shows that Omega 3 fatty acids help manage skin allergies and itching by stimulating the production of natural anti-inflammatory substances in the body. It can help counteract negative effects of allergic dermatitis by producing specific hormones which are known to reduce and control skin inflammations. Yeast infections of the skin and ears can also be improved by Omega 3 supplementation.

Injuries – Omega 3 reduces inflammation in joints and muscles.

Kidney – Omega 3 can help dogs with kidney disease by increasing prostaglandins that reduce inflammation in the kidneys and improve blood flow to them.

Supplementing your dog's diet with Omega 3

Giving your dog an Omega 3 supplement can benefit your dog whether he is healthy (glossy coat, protection against cancer, circulatory health, etc) or fighting disease (management of skin conditions, allergies, inflammation, etc).

NOTE: If your dog is on blood thinning medication, you should consult your veterinarian before commencing Omega 3 supplementation. Follow directions per bottle.

If buying at regular pharmacies, please follow directions and give dosage per weight. Regular supplements for humans are based on 150lb person. Give supplements as per the weight of dog. ie. dosage on human supplement container states 3 per day, for a 50lb dog, give one per day.

It will take 8-12 weeks to see the benefits of Omega 3 fatty acid supplementation.

Last night, a friend from Minneapolis confessed to me that a mild case of plantar fasciitis has limited his jogging. Not wanting him to "one-up-me" with his life problems I replied, "Welcome to the old age club. My ankle's been killing me too." After reading an article in in the Feast, a weekly food magazine of the Nassau (NH) Telegraph, I was reminded that old age may not have been the my problem; it might have been what I've been eating.

Now, I've previously posted about how some foods like flax are good for reducing the pain caused by inflammation in joints and muscles. But I forgot all about that last night when talking to my friend; Lucky I stumbled across the Feast article titled "Reduce pain by eating anti-inflammatory foods."

As I read and reflected on what I'd been eating lately, I realized that many of those "good summertime foods", which have invaded my diet lately, were on the list of pro-inflammation foods. For instance, the article talks about how "processed meats such as lunch meats, hot dogs and sausages contain nitrites, which are associated with increased inflammation and chronic disease. " It also mentions foods high in sugar and fats as foods that can contribute to inflammation.

The article goes on to recommend foods high in omega-3 (like flax, pumpkin seeds, and walnuts) and then provides the most complete list of foods that help fight inflammation that I have ever seen.

So where does this take us? I guess what I'm trying to get at is that don't just assume that old age is causing your ailments. Look to the foods you eat, and see what you can do to help your body without just resorting to medications.

Estimates show that between 5 percent and 10 percent of the U.S. population uses nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for pain relief. While NSAIDs are effective in treating both acute and chronic pain, they also may cause a myriad of complications, ranging from headaches and stomach ulcers to dizziness, constipation and diarrhea. A new study indicates that omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil may be just as effective as NSAIDs in treating pain, without causing the same side effects.

In this study, scientists evaluated 250 patients who were suffering from nonsurgical neck pain or back pain, and who were taking NSAIDs for pain relief. The patients were asked to take 2,400 milligrams of omega-3 supplements per day for two weeks, and then to reduce the dosage to 1,200 milligrams daily. Approximately one month after starting supplementation, the patients were mailed a questionnaire asking them to document
their level of pain, use of NSAIDs, and any side effects caused by the supplements.

One hundred twenty-five patients returned the questionnaire, an average of 75 days after taking the supplements. Seventy-eight percent were taking 1,200 milligrams of omega-3s; the remainder had continued taking 2,400 milligrams. More than half of the patients (59 percent) reported they had discontinued using NSAIDs for pain control; 60 percent said their overall pain levels had improved; and 80 percent stated that they were
satisfied with the improvement in pain. No adverse side effects were reported.

As the results of this study show, omega-3 fatty acids appear just as effective as NSAIDs, if not more so, in relieving certain kinds of neck and back pain. That said, there is no better form of natural back pain relief than an adjustment from your local doctor of chiropractic. If you suffer from neck or back pain, make an appointment with your DC today; they will find the source of your pain and treat you accordingly -- and they might even recommend some omega-3s.

"The authors concluded that in combination with standard treatments, consumption of omega-3 fatty acids may provide a nontoxic means to improve cancer treatment outcomes and may slow or prevent recurrence of cancer; they added omega-3 supplementation may constitute a useful alternative therapy for patients who are not candidates for standards toxic cancer therapies." (Journal of Nutrition (134, 12: 3427S-3430S, 2004)).

In another observational study published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," (December 2004) scientists examined the effects of food supplement on cognitive aging on subjects born in 1936, were tested for mental ability in 1947. The same subjects were followed up in 2000 and 2001 at which time cognition, diet, food supplement use, and risk factors for vascular disease were assessed. Fish oil users were matched with nonusers, and cognitive function was related to erythrocyte omega-3 essential fatty acid (EFA) composition. The scientists found that the subjects, at the age of 64 years, had cognitive function higher in the food supplement users than in nonusers before adjustment for childhood IQ. After adjustment for childhood IQ, digit symbol (mental speed) test scores also were higher in food supplement users. Fish oil supplement users were also found to have consumed more vitamin C and vegetable and cereal fiber than did nonsupplement users. "The scientists concluded, omega-3 supplement use is associated with better cognitive aging. If associations with omega 3 content are causal, optimization of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acid intakes could improve retention of cognitive function in old age."
Many commentators of food and nutrition claim that grass-fed beef offers more health benefits than

Many commentators of food and nutrition claim that grass-fed beef offers more health benefits than their corn-fed beef. The argument goes that eating grass (as well as flax) increases the amount of omega-3 fatty acids in the meat and produce a leaner quality meat product. Thus grass-fed meat is better for you and me.

Stephen Smith, a meat specialist from Texas A&M, is not so confident about these claims. In an Ag Weekly story he argues that the fat in meat (often called marbling) is not as bad for people as some nutritionists claim, and questions whether the amount of omega-3 found in grass-fed beef is enough to make a difference. The article reads:

While promoters of grass-fed beef often mention that it has "more" conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and omega-3 fatty acid than other beef, there are other ways to look at it.

Trans-vaccenic acid (TVA) is the precursor to CLA, and it comes from the rumen breakdown of forages as well as from the oil in grains. Feeding flax seed can also boost TVA. However, research shows that just 20 percent of TVA goes to CLA in the human diet. "The other 80 percent is still floating around, and it may be acting as saturated fat," Smith says. "We don't yet know what TVA does to cholesterol levels. We do know that the more marbling in beef, the less TVA."

Whether the topic is CLA or omega-3, Smith says science has not yet identified cattle or management strategies that can accumulate enough to make a significant difference. "Beef is simply not a reasonable source of these," he says. "It just doesn't work."

I must admit that I have become a fan of grass-fed beef and that I am probably not qualified to disput a meat specialist. But I do think Smith misses two points. First, although the amount of omega-3 found in beef is small compared to fish and flax, we still need need all the omega-3's we can get. Second, if we adhere to the argument that the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 is an important health factor, then we need to consider how the amount of omega-6's found in corn-fed beef. I think the evidence shows that its much higher.

If you want to learn more about the amounts of omega-3s and omega-6s in food, I'd recommend checking out a post on the Weight of Evidence blog. And don't forget to scroll through the comments. You'll find lots of good information.
