Columbus 5 - Dallas 4

Man it was great to get the hockey season going again. What a game, course it would be nice to see more consistency but then again it was 1 game. At times the Stars looked good and the young stars, like Neal, stepped up and performed, then there was times I felt we where still stuck in preseason mode. Good to see us steal a point down by 2 with less than 4 minutes but again we need to find consistency. We have to remember we still have a lot of young defense men and hopefully we wont have to suffer through a little "sophomore jinx". Just take it out on Nashville tonight...

When expositing the sinfulness of the wicked in Psalm 36, Boice recalls Edwards' 'eight deceptions of the wicked':

1. Some flatter themselves with a secret hope that there is no such thing as another world.
2. Some flatter themselves that death is a great way off.
3. Some flatter themselves that they lead moral and orderly lives and therefore think that they shall not be damned.
4. Some make the advantages under which they live an occasion of self-flattery.
5. Some flatter themselves with their own intentions.
6. There are some who flatter themselves that they do, and have done a great deal for their salvation.
7. Some hope by their strivings to obtain salvation of themselves.
8. Some sinners flatter themselves that they are already converted.

After hearing Dr. Josh Williams' lecture on Proverbs and Ecclesiastes tonight at First Baptist Euless, I decided that I want to be a Proverbs 31 man.

The characteristics of a P31 man:

not a womanizer (v. 3)

does not crave strong drink (v. 4)

speaks up for the mute and the unfortunate (v. 8)

Men

I’ve been amazed at the depth of scholarship in many pre-1900 commentaries. Since we live in

I've been amazed at the depth of scholarship in many pre-1900 commentaries. Since we live in a day where we sometimes think we're smarter than those before us who had no laptops or cell phones (have these made us less intelligent?), I think it is necessary for us to encourage one another to read "old" stuff.

Since this blog is about reading theology/Bible, let me encourage you to utilize (among other sources) Google Books. Below I've listed just a few of the pre-1900 commentators you'll find on Google books (just type author name in "full text search"), with many of their English commentaries completely scanned online, free to read, study, and print. Note: as with all commentaries, you have to read the following ones critically sometimes. Some of the following are better than others.

B. F. Westcott (1825-1901) is the "Wescott" in the "Wescott and Hort" NT. Go here for many of Wescott's works. His commentaries/writings include studies in the Gospels, John's Gospel, Jesus' resurrection, Sermons on the Cross, Paul and Justification, John's Epistles, and so on.

August Tholuck (1799-1877) wrote many commentaries, including Romans, Sermons on the Passion, John's Gospel, Hebrews, and the Psalms.

J. B. Lightfoot (1828-1889) wrote on the Apostolic Fathers, the Christian Ministry, Galatians, Philippians, John's Gospel, Colossians, and more.

Frederic Godet (1812-1900) penned studies on the OT and NT, commentaries on Romans, Luke, John's Gospel, and so forth.

Alfred Plummer (1841-1926) wrote on John's Gospel, John's Epistles, the Pastorals, Luke, the Church Fathers, and so forth.

C. Ellicott (1819-1905) wrote many commentaries, especially of Paul's epistles.

H. Ewald (1803-1875) was an OT scholar who wrote on the Psalms, Job, OT history, etc.

J. Bengal (18th century; a.k.a. Bengalius) was a NT scholar who wrote several pieces on Greek Grammar, as well as an interesting commentary on Revelation.

J. J. Griesbach (d. 1812) was a NT scholar whose did a lot with NT translation.

H. C. G. Moule (19th century) was also a NT teacher who wrote on Colossians Philemon, Philippians, and Ephesians.

D. Kimhi (way back - 12th century) was a Jewish OT scholar who commented on the Psalms and Zechariah.

E. W. Hengstenberg (1802-1869) wrote much on the OT and NT, including the messianic aspect of the OT, the Psalms, the Pentateuch, Revelation, Ecclesiastes, and so forth.

H. Meyer (19th century) was also an able Bible scholar. His works include commentaries on Romans, Matthew, John's Gospel, Corinthians (1 & 2), Philippians, and so forth.

J. Eadie (d. 1855) wrote commentaries on Philippians, Ephesians, Isaiah's prophecies, and so on.

F. Delitzsch and C. Keil (19th century) - the well known OT commentaries - are also on Google books.

S. R. Driver (1846-1914) was one of the editors of the original ICC series. He wrote commentaries on Joel, Amos, Job, Daniel, Samuel, and so forth. FYI: he is the "D" in BDB.

Patrick Fairbairn (d. 1874) wrote on typology, hermeneutics, as well as commentaries on the Psalms, Ezekiel, Peter, Jesus' parables, and so forth.

Moses Stuart (1780-1852) has commentaries on Ecclesiastes, Proverbs, Hebrews, Daniel, Revelation, and a few more.

Finally, many of the old International Critical Commentaries (ICC) are not only on Google books, but also here (at the Internet Archive Search).

Also on Google books, as I mentioned before on this blog, you can read commentaries and sermons from the church fathers, including Cyril, Cyprian, Chrysostom, Augustine, Tertullian, and so forth. And of course, Calvin, Luther, Bullinger, and other Reformation era commentators can be found there as well.

Please, take advantage of these excellent resources! I'm sure you can add many to the above list, so feel free to note in the comments if you wish.

I like the idea of farming characters–alts for fairly serious players who exist just to farm g

I like the idea of farming characters--alts for fairly serious players who exist just to farm gold or mats for production professions. My personal farming character is my Hunter, Marsala. I'll give you a couple minutes to peruse the armory and /point and /laugh at her bad gear and sort of goofy spec.

Done? Good. Now I'll defend myself. She's a farming character, so yeah she's wearing crafted or quest blues and not a whole lot of instance gear. I was just getting to 70 without concern for instancing. It's not her focus, so I never really bothered to learn how to properly play a Hunter in instances. Second you'll notice she's specced Marksman without hardly any HKs or Arena experience. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I roll MM for farming in PvE. So sue me. I like the MM tree and I feel it does just fine for knocking out some dailies and farming leather and ore. I like the other trees too (leveled mostly as BM, am loving the way Survival is looking for WotLK) but this was just what I was screwing around with when I had to stop playing.

Anyway, back to the point. I made Marsala as an alt to level with my good friends Euripedes and Flirt. They fell behind on their respective alts and I stuck with mine. I trained her in skinning and mining because Oliveta was a Leatherworker and around the time I made Marsala, I made Oliveta a Blacksmith as well (for the Dragonstrike--see the Beef Blender post). Marsala was, and continues to be, a purely farming character and there's nothing wrong with that. She does well at it. Hunters and Warlocks are the most popular farming characters, mostly due to the no-brainer nature of them in solo PvE (even big boosters of both must admit this--mastering either in raiding or PvP is an accomplishment, but any idiot can control a Hunter or Warlock in solo PvE with some degree of success). And actually, an Enhancement Shaman with say, some S2 weapons via honor grinding and craftable and quest gear can make a pretty good farming character. DPS out there with that sort of gear is respectable, survivability is high, and down time (when using a proper rotation) is very low. So yeah, if you're leveling a Shaman as an alt, consider putting a little time into PvP and make him or her a good farmer.

Back to the Hunter class: my Hunter role models are my good friends Uncas, Nisko, and Ghostkid. We all used to be in the same guild together and raided together fairly frequently (I was the most inconsistent of the bunch--Uncas and Nisko were very regular raiders) and all three are quite good at the Hunter way in both PvE and PvP (well, Ghostkid is just as clueless as I am in PvP, actually). I've picked up quite a few good tips from all three of them and if I ever were to seriously consider Marsala as an actual character I wanted to play beyond solo PvE farming content, they would be the first I would go to in learning rotations, enchants, macros, etc. (and Nisko is starting his very own WoW blog--exciting!!--link incoming, it'll be on the blogroll once he gets it going)

I enjoy the Hunter class for the most part, and as tedious as farming can be, I find it rather enjoyable on Marsala because I get to mess around with a style of play and a mindset that I don't get to experience much when healing or dpsing on Oliveta or tanking on Soleia. It's very casual and very relaxing, particularly with some good music in the background.

Words can't describe how helpful a farming alt can be--particularly when your main character is a tank or healer and has very little solo viability. So yeah, Oliveta says if you don't have one already, roll one and get to farming!

no he paradao de soñar contigo

no he parado de soñar contigo

Okay, so I do realize that this is off-topic, but I had to write this somewhere and show it to an audience. This is the iPhone Telescope 6X Zoom Camera Lens. It will increase your spying capabilities by six-fold. I find this hilarious because a) it defeats the whole purpose of the thinness of an iPhone and b) yes, nobody will notice that giant scope while you take inconspicuous pictures of them. Can you imagine someone with that at a baseball game trying to take pictures of players??

With an ultimate view toward building a comprehensive understanding of Mark's dependance on and use of the Hebrew Bible, I'm writing now to just quickly record the various locations Mark quotes from. Be forewarned that the following quotes come only from the most superficial survey of the book. So, while I am sure that Mark's dependance extends far beyond the present listing, I figure this is at least a start.

Hebrew Bible Passages Quoted in Mark:

Genesis 1:27, 2:24; 5:2

Exodus 3:6; 20:12-16; 21:17; 23:20

Leviticus 19:18; 20:9

Dueteronomy 4:35; 5:16-20; 6:4-5; 24:1, 14

Joshua 22:5

Psalm 22:1; 110:1; 118:22-23

Isaiah 29:13; 40:1; 56:7

Jeremiah 7:11

Daniel 7:13

Zechariah 13:7

Malachi 3:1

Hebrew Bible Quotations as They Appear Throughout Mark

Mark 1:2-3 (Ex. 23:20; Mal 3:1; Is. 40:1)

Mark 4:12 (Is 6:9-10)

Mark 7:6-7 (Is. 29:13)

Mark 7:10 (Ex 20:12; Dt 5:16) and (Ex 21:17; Lev 20:9)

Mark 10:4 (Dt. 24:1)

Mark 10:6 (Gen 1:27; 5:2)

Mark 10:8 (Gen 2:24)

Mark 10:19 (Ex 20:12-16; Dt 5:16-20; 24:14)

Mark 11:9 (Ps 118:25-26)

Mark 11:17 (Is 56:7; Jer 7:11)

Mark 12:10 (Ps 118:22-23)

Mark 12:19 (Dt 25:5)

Mark 12:27 (Ex 3:6)

Mark 12:29-30 (Dt 6:4-5; Josh 22:5)

Mark 12:31 (Lev 19:18)

Mark 12:32 (Dt 4:35)

Mark 12:33 (Dt 6:5; Leve 19:18)

Mark 12:36 (Ps 110:1)

Mark 14:27 (Zech 13:7)

Mark 14:62 (Ps 110:1; Dan 7:13)

Mark 15:34 (Ps 22:1)

Any good understanding of the Gospel of Mark that we come up with will inherently make room for Mark's perspective of the OT, including questions like: "Why does Mark draw so much from the Torah?" "Why start with the Isaiah/Exodus/Malachi quote he starts with in Mark 1:2-3?" etc. Hopefully this post helps us all become better readers over time.

I finally got my wish.

Last friday the taxi driver told me KPE is faster than ECP for my journey home. But I did not choose the route that night.

Last night, I decided to try the ECP-KPE-TPE combo. Really faster and the cab fare was two dollars less. But there was nothing to see inside the KPE and the journey was quite boring. Also I didn't know there is still a long way from TPE to my house.

I was so bored that I tried to come out with a business plan for the government. Look at the walls of the tunnel - if they were to rent out that advertisement space, guess how much they would earn?

Maybe I should 环岛追追追 in future, on company's expenses. LOL

Update: I am back in office to check on my previous receipt. It appears there is NO significant saving from the KPE route. Whatever saving is written off by the boring journey. If they will just have tunnel billboards or tunnelvertising. Till then.
