As many of you may have heard me talk about or read, I grew up surrounded by music - loud, pulsing, rock music! My dad was (and still is) a rock guitarist, so I probably began rocking out at festivals and stadiums in the womb! I also soaked up a lot of music from my other family and their friends, and began performing at a young age, so have a lot of music memories from my childhood to choose from. Here are a few choice few...

1. Hearing Money for Nothing by the original or a cover band on a sunny weekend with my mother at a picnic. Age 2

2. Front row "pit" area watching my dad shred a strat with his waist-length hair flying and women all around me screaming (seriously). Age: 3

3. Memorizing the Muppet Show song played exactly at bedtime. It was the special nights when I was allowed to stay up long enough to watch the actual show! So the opening, "It's time to get things started..." was a musical memory filled with joy, hope, and disappointment! Age 4

4. Singing "I Gotta Crow" for an audition for Peter Pan in front of much older kids because I got the audition dates mixed up. Wow was that scarey. I wanted to be Wendy, of course. I was cast as a little lost boy, but cut my shorts too short and looked more like a wanna-be Daisy Duke. Age 6

5. Dancing around in my aunt's living room with my little cousin Sarah to Bob Seager. Age 7

6. Listening to my sister's copy of Joshua Tree in her room decorated floor-to-ceiling with Loverboy paraphernalia, all black and red. Age 7

7. Assembling a small lipsynch rock band called the Rock Cabbages (the Cabbage Patch Dolls were causing riots that year). Age 8

8. Watching the Potterville High School marching band play in my elementary school cafeteria and knowing I wanted to be a flag girl (which I indeed, later became!). Age 10

9. Falling in love with the music of They Might Be Giants via my father's long-time friend, Ray. My younger brothers and I would go through the house singing Particle Man over and over. Age 12

10. Listening to my mother's copies of old-school Tracy Chapman after she left my father... and us. Age 13

I did this in January of my senior year of high school. This scan is actually only half of the painting- it was too large to fit on my scanner and I lack editing software to properly paste two scans together. I am still proud of this one, which is saying something since I'm looking back on it from three years distance.

I heard something funny today, ok maybe mildly amusing..... browsing my friends facebook profile I came across someones political Views... It simply said "Every time Obama speaks, an angel has an orgasm."

Not a pretty thought, and kind of vulgar. but heres a rebuttal. playing with J. M. Barries Peter Pan.

Every time Obama speaks, there is a fairy somewhere that falls down dead.

We wouldn't want that now would we kids??? So help save a fairy. Listen to McCain??? Uhh.

"Igual o do Caldeirão, papai?"

- Sempre fui e sempre serei.

- Exatamente.

- Isso não lhe soa mal, perverso, maquiavélico?

- Isso me soa: sobrevivência, sabedoria, excelência.

Sod’s Law has it that every time I have a nice dinner lined up, the TV rings and asks me to do

Sod's Law has it that every time I have a nice dinner lined up, the TV rings and asks me to do a live Press Review -- but I can't complain, as they pay, and I know that if I said 'no' they would only ask someone else... So, I missed the middle bit of the Biographers' Club prize-giving dinner at the Savile Club earlier this evening, at which the accolades went to Michael Bundock of the Johnson Society for his work on Samuel Johnson, whose tercentenary falls next year. I don't think this is the same Michael Bundock who wrote an erudite tome on shipping law, but I can't be sure. Infuriatingly, I was seated at the same table as him, but alas, by the time I had returned from the TV studio (the Savile had kept a dinner warm for me, bless them, maybe because I used to be a member), he was up and gone. Similarly, I missed hearing the main speaker, my old chum Simon Callow, who has written on fellow thespians Charles Laughton and Orson Welles. However, I did get a chance to have a good reminiscence with him (mainly about Laughton's next-door-neighbour in Santa Monica, Christopher Isherwood, whose biography I wrote). And as a penance for missing Simon's speech, I promised that I will go to see him in the pantomime 'Peter Pan' in Richmond this Christmas. Sigh.

Contained within was a link to a US version of "Rock and Soul Revue". My first thought was that Steve had gone off and started a "Rock and Soul" franchise, but when he replied to my query with a "Peteee, Peteee, huh?", I knew that this was sheer coincidence.

They look like a pretty fun kind of band with absolutely no personal space issues if their homepage is to be believed.

I'm pretty happy to give them a plug here considering they are on the other side of the world, and what the heck, I think I might even send them a link to our website and blog in an attempt to establish a brethren, coven, cult, whatever, of "Rock and Soulers" across the world. Maybe we could even tour together one day!

Grazie Manuel Frattini.

"When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me." 1 Cor 13:11

Love requires maturity. I don't think it is coincidence that this scripture is at the end of a whole passage on love. I have a 2-year old niece (whom I absolutely love more than words can describe!!) and one of her favorite words is 'myne' (mine), next to 'nog' (more). Children behave like that: selfish and self-absorbed until they learn to share and learn to love.

It applies to us as well. To truly love one another the way God intended requires of us to give up our agenda, our own wants and desires, it requires humility and selflessness. And this is also what is needed for us to truly love and serve God... LESS OF ME LORD, MORE OF YOU... LOVE ABOUNDS.

What actually prompted this post was that PETER PAN is the most searched for term that generates hits on my blog (433 searches vs. 'olympic opening ceremony' in 2nd place with only 14!). I have found this quite interesting for a while and have wondered if there are a lot of adults out there who just simply don't want to grow up- which immediately caused the scripture above to pop into my head. Today I realize it's probably just kids searching and that Peter Pan is a popular guy, but the thoughts were there and reminded me of the importance for me to continuously work to be mature in my actions and in love.

To love the world
For me is no chore;
My only real problem
Is my neighbor next door.
(C.W. Vanderbergh)

Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13

-Are you a Peter Pan fan, do you wish you were still a child?
-Do you get any strange search terms that bring people to your blog?
-Would you lay down your life for a friend...?

Who says subliminal messaging in media

.authored by something.of.substance.

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="160" caption=".get "Hook"ed."][/caption]

Who says subliminal messaging in media isn’t real? The jam band Blues Traveler explored this concept, tonally and satirically, in their 1994 song “Hook”. The hook mentioned throughout the nearly five minute song references both a musical “hook”- the catchy musical element, phrase, or riff of a song which makes it distinctive and keeps the listener’s attention - and Capt. Hook, the arch-nemesis of eternal boy Peter Pan. And, because this song is fourteen years old, it has faded to an accepted obscurity within pop-culture. We all recognize it without ever having realized what it was saying.

The most surprisingly element of this song most people would not recognize without it being pointed out. For a song whose words go on to sing about diversity in music and how this particular band doesn’t need a “hook” to draw-in listeners, they structured their song, musically, around one of the most popular hooks of all time! The entire song is based, tonally, around the chords of 17th Century classical composer Johann Pachelbel’s very famous Canon in D (song included below with "Hook" for comparison purposes). Without knowing it, listeners are attracted to the song because they faintly recognize the tune. The tonal hook is catchy and popular; it brings you back.

The verbal hook in this song announces itself with the repeated line: “the hook brings you back”. Adamantly against following the “formula” of a successful pop song, Blues Traveler admits it “could be financial suicide” to produce the types of songs they came together as a band to sing rather than those songs- the “hip three minute ditties”- which are reliable album sellers. And, in an attempt to educate listeners about really paying attention to the politically-correct tunes they are being force-fed on the radio and MTV, Popper “desperately” wants to “sing to thee of love sure but also rage and hate and pain and fear of self” but also acknowledges that he worries that if he does, he will lose his career. He is required to abide by the “hook” for financial gain and public notoriety. But, instead of exploiting their ideals, Blues Traveler satirically exploits us and our love of conformity instead.

The Peter Pan reference, while obvious, is more subversive. In the second stanza, John Popper sings:
“…To confuse the issue I refer/
To familiar heroes from long ago/
No matter how much Peter loved her/
What made the Pan refuse to grow…”

No matter how much Peter cared for Wendy, he didn’t want to permanently leave Neverland until he defeated Capt. Hook; his rivalry with Hook kept him returning to Neverland, therefore preventing him from ever moving on. This acknowledgment of what is “accepted” in pop-music could be Blues Traveler’s comparison of itself to Peter Pan. Jam bands are known for not following standard three-minute song formats complete with choruses and hooks and catchy pop-beats the kids want to bop to. However, by incorporating the structure of Canon in D (with only a minor variation in chord progression), the song’s hook, much like Capt. Hook, keeps you from moving on (to another tune).

Blues Traveler produced a song which, by subliminally-incorporating a hook, rallies against having to produce catchy popular music. What is both hypocritical and genius about Blues Traveler’s “Hook” is that it manages to be both accepted and insubordinate at the same time. The band readily admits they must amalgamate some of their ideals with those of pop culture in order to be successful. And, while they do this, they do so with a big middle finger in the face of the industry and the listeners. They managed to produce a song with a very satirical depiction of pop culture and a very successful hook, all without having to write one of their own. Blues Traveler subliminally catches your attention with their tonal “Hook” and keeps it long enough to feed you their very anti-“Hook” message. A band that creatively made the smallest of concessions to stay true to their form while gaining in popularity and success: it sounds like Blues Traveler found away to defeat the Hook after all.

A bit delayed, as usual. But here it is, my response to the challenge! I'll try to get versions of the songs, but I do have ninty percent of them on my iTunes, so if you really want I can send you the MP3 via email or which ever method you choose. Now, the Mix(tape) It Up Challenge!

1. A song with an impressive intro: Stronger- Kanye West.

Who doesn't love some good Kanye West? Especially with a nice collaberation between him and Daft Punk? This makes for a lovely intro.

2. A song with a literary allusion: Peter Pan- Patrick Wolf

Patrick Wolf and Peter Pan, what a combination. Peter Pan was a book before the Disney Movie, but I'm sure you all knew that. So, this is my literary allusion. Patrick Wolf's music fits the part, I believe, with the violins and the beautiful melodies he manages to produce.

(I couldn't find this one, so, good luck with that. Sorry!)

3. A song released 20+ years ago: Guns of Brixton- The Clash

There were so many options for this one, but this song came on my iTunes when I was talking to Paul about it. Who doesn't love a little bit of The Clash? I know I do. The song was released in 1979.

4. A rap song that fits within the realm of hipsterness: Good Friday- Why?

Yoni Wolf once again produces a great song that manages to fit perfectly in this category. This song is a perfect blend of rap and hipsterism, sweet music to my ears. This song has racked up the plays on my iPod and my computer, so give it a listen.

5. A song by the first band you saw in concert: Take Me Home Please- Reggie and the Full Effect

I'm not going to comment. I could have gone the more embarrassing route and picked a My Chemical Romance song, but I have some pride. I was young and, surprisingly, it was a decent concert.

6. A song that mentions or alludes (clearly) to a historical figure: Cape Canaveral - Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band

Don't get me started on Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band again. I would have used this for #14, but I ended up using the Mystic Band and Bright Eyes by the time I got there. In this song, Socrates is mentioned and a Greek philospher, though in a different way, still counted.

7. A song employing a foreign language either in part or whole: Qué Onda Guero -Beck

When we decided on this track, I thought this would be difficult. But then I remembered good old Beck. So, Beck was chosen for this track.

8. A song that describes your hometown: Devil Town- Daniel Johnston

What a perfect song to describe my hometown. This song just fits everything that is my hometown. It was covered by Bright Eyes and is featured on his album, Noise Floor Rarities. Daniel Johnston's original is wonderful, but the cover is almost just as good. I recommend both.

9. A song that mentions fruit: Lime Tree- Bright Eyes

I surprisingly had many, many options for this one. I was going to use "Peach Plum Pear," a cover by Final Fantasy, but I decided on this one. There was also another Bright Eyes song, "Bowl of Oranges." Fruit is clearly mentioned in the title.

10. The most heart wrenchingly sad song you know: Trouble (Cover) - Elliott Smith

There were so many options for this one, and I think I had to change it at least five times. This one won it though. Elliott Smith's cover of the Cat Stevens song is brilliant and heart-wrenching, but you can't help but listen to it. It brings tears to my eyes every time.

11. A song containing alliteration: On the Bus Mall- The Decemberists

The alliteration varies in this song, switching between verses. I read the lyrics and found the examples and the pattern seems to be two or three words with the same letter. Makes for lovely alliteration, if I do say myself.

(I only could find covers and since I didn't feel like listening to them all, you can find it. Plus, a cover is hardly ever as good as the original.)

12. An unlikely cover: Hurt- Johnny Cash ( Originally a Nine Inch Nails song)

Nine Inch Nail's song, "Hurt" is a great song to begin with. Then, Johnny Cash comes and makes it incredible. He took the song and changed it, for the better. It is beautiful and full of emotion and one of the best songs, ever.

13. A song that name drops another artist: Grace Kelly- Mika

Another song that gave me some trouble, but then I thought back and this song popped out. Freddy Mercury is name dropped and this is a fun little tune that gets stuck in your head.

14. A song by the band you most swoon over: Music When the Lights Go Out- The Libertines

Conor Oberst would be in this place if I didn't use him already. However, The Libertines are a close second, as the whole band is lovely. So, Pete Doherty may be a heroin addict and doesn't hang out with the best people, and maybe Carl Barat was a bit hypocritical when he kicked Pete out of the band as he was on coke, but lets face it: they are some of the most attractive men in the world. They both earned a place on the Top 5 in my book. You may argue, but this is my opinion. They're hot, and their music is great, even in the spin-off bands, Dirty Pretty Things and Babyshambles.

15. A song about endings: Casimir Pulaski Day- Sufjan Stevens

Another song that almost made it into the saddest song category, but I decided it was fitting to be here as well. This song is beautiful and sad, pretty and meaningful. A classic example of Sufjan Stevens, and if you haven't heard this song, you better listen.

So, there it is! My response. Man, that was fun. Sorry that the videos are iffy, but most of the songs are there! Have a ball, folks.

I was Peter Pan for Halloween three years in a row. The fourth year, I went to a “Hallow Him

I was Peter Pan for Halloween three years in a row. The fourth year, I went to a "Hallow Him" celebration at church instead of trick-or-treating; Mom glued leaves on my Peter Pan costume and I was Adam. But I was so Peter Pan. I own Hook, the Disney cartoon, Finding Neveland, and the 2003 version on DVD, and I can tell you just why each of them is wrong. For my final project in Dr. Dixon's Oral Interp, I read Captain Hook's death scene. When I visited the UK in 2003, I separated myself from the group and circled Kensington Gardens until I found J.M. Barrie's estate. Of course I have my picture by the famous statue (which took me another long while to find).

So when I tell people, "yeah, I'm going to be in Peter Pan at the Beck. Sure it's not the greatest of shows, but I'm glad to get my foot in the door," you'll know it's a lie. A bold-faced lie.

This Holiday Season I will be playing the pirate Bill Jukes. And I couldn't be more excited unless I was playing Hook himself (or Rufio, but that just can't happen). There are two interesting things about Jukes concerning his appearance. First of all, the book describes him with, "every inch of him tattooed." I'm meeting with the costume/makeup people in a couple of weeks, and you bet your sweet bippy I'm inquiring on this point.

*To be clear, I think that would be awesome.

The other thing is that I'm not allowed to cut my hair until January. This will be the first time I've ever let my hair go that long. Even in college, when I was feeling free-spirited and slightly rebellious, I couldn't bear having that much hair. My hair doesn't get long. It gets big. So when I look like Sideshow Bob, I'll just have to find an excuse to wear a hat.

There will be a smattering of Sandhams in the production as well, including Brendan as Smee and Lincoln as John. Clay will be one of my fellow pirates. Good times. Some other people I also like will be in it. Overall, I'm thrilled.

Oh, apparently Lindsey will be Older Wendy.

There comes a time in every man and woman’s life when they realise they are no longer the youn

There comes a time in every man and woman's life when they realise they are no longer the youngest person in the room.

As a teenager, all you ever want is to grow up, to be 18, and to know what it's like to be free. To be able to drive, drink and have the same options as everybody else. Once you become 18 however, you realise that maybe you were trying to get up to the top of the hill a little too fast, because when you reach it, you look out and realise that it's a long way down on the other side.

It sneaks up on you so quickly, because it's something you've never experienced before. You can never be older than you are. You have quite literally spent your whole life being young. It seems hard to understand that the very large majority of my life so far has been as an undeveloped minor.

For me the realisation has happened over the past few months. Whenever I go out, I still feel as young as everybody else around me, but the fact is, I'm not. I've reached that awkward age of 22 where I'm starting to feel too old for the youthful clubs, but still too young for the established pubs.

Then there are the clothes.

Nowhere is it more obvious than at university. In my classes, aside from the occasional mature-age student, most of us are around the same age. Suddenly though, the clothes are changing. Some people still dress like teenagers - the surfy clothes, the bright colours, the dyed hair. But some are dressing more like adults - collars, more conservative shoes, $15 haircuts.

Is there a time you are just supposed to jump ship? When does it become pathetic to wear skate shoes and pierce your eyebrow? When do you trade in the late nights at the clubs for the early morning walks in the park with the dog? When do you stop drinking Red Bull and start drinking caffè latte?

Is there an age? Is it when you start working full time? Is it just a myth? If Neverland exists, would somebody please give me the directions because I am quite literally running out of time.

From season 1, episode 14 of The Muppet Show. Australian horror director Greg Mclean uses a great performance of this classic Disney song (originally written for Peter Pan) to accompany the end credits of his awesome croc movie Rogue (which was recently released on DVD in the US).

While in Vegas for our super awesome, once in a lifetime, fun filled Dusty Girls Road Trip, we all chose names to give to random club/street men in order to shield our everyday identities (okay, and feel a little superior).

I chose the name Gwen. Partially because I like Gweneth Paltrow in all of her tall, blonde goodness; partially because I really, honestly like the name. Mostly because it was all I could think about at the time.

Shortly before the trip, then-fiance confided to me that he was engaged previous to going overseas, and the bitch broke his heart by cheating on him and subsequently dumping him. Her name was Wendy. And now he refuses to let me have the option of the name Gwendolyn on the table for a future child, which is extra horrible because I have always loved that name since Peter Pan.

I'm sure in time the want for that particular name will fade because we have talked about so many other beautiful names, Gwen just pales in comparison.
