Der Game-Designer David Jaffe (God of War, Twisted Metal) wurde heftig kritisiert, weil er in seinem Blog criminalcrackdown die republikanische Vizepräsidentinnen-Kandidatin Sarah Palin als Milf ("mother i like to fuck") bezeichnete, einem Fachbegriff aus Teilen unserer Popularkultur. In diesem aktuellen Video verteidigt er auf sehr intelligente und sympathische Weise seinen Standpunkt: Dass er selbst nicht gegen irgendwelche Ansichten, Religionen, Weltanschauungen sei, jeden Mitbürger respektiere, kein Sexist wäre und Sarah Palin, wenn man sie so ansieht (und die von ihr vertretenen Standpunkte betrachtet), nur für eines gut sei: Zum Ficken. Ich denke, das ist seine ganz persönliche Meinung, und er hat wie jeder Bürger eines zivilisierten Staates das Recht, diese zu äussern.

Zumindest zwischen Grönland und Kanada. Das Ellesmere Island ist das nördlichste Stück des nördlichsten nord- amerikanischen Landes und hat diesen Sommer schon weit mehr Eis verloren, als die Klima- forscher erwartet hatten. Vor 100 Jahren lagen da noch 9000 Quadratkilometer Eisshelf herum, jetzt sind es 800. Erst im August machten sich 55 Quadratkilometer vom Markham Ice Shelf davon. Davor am Ward Hunt (43 qkm) und am Serson (120 qkm). Die Eisflächen wären seit 4000 Jahren stabil gewesen, sagen die Forscher, jetzt sei Schluss mit der Stabilität.

Das seltsame Trio Statistisches Bundesamt, Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie und Mineralölwirtschaftsverband (?!) lieferte Zahlen, die dann von der Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband (vzbv) zusammengerechnet wurden (PDF). Somit würde ein durchschnittlicher Vier-Personen-Haushalt (was ist an vier Personen durchschnittlich?) 13 % mehr für Benzin, 57 % mehr für Heizöl und 7 % mehr für Strom ausgeben. Ach. Hartz 4 Empfänger haben in Deutschland übrigens ein Recht auf volle Energiekostenerstattung, auch wenn manche Behörden das vergessen.

SciFi-Autor und BoingBoing-Blogger Cory Doctorow stiess im Zug seiner Recherchen auf eine Studie von Robert H. Frank, Thomas Gilovich, und Dennis T. Regan, mit dem vielsagenden Titel "Verhindert das Studium der Wirtschaftswissenschaften die Zusammenarbeit?". Darin zitieren die Urheber der Studie verschiedene Quellen aus der Grundlagenforschung und finden, dass durch eine Ausbildung im ökonomischen Bereich die Bereitschaft des Einzelnen zur Zusammenarbeit, zum Beitrag für gemeinnützige Aktionen abnimmt. In einem Experiment wurde der Einfluss des Studiengangs nachgewiesen. Darin wurde jedem Versuchsteilnehmer ein bestimmter Geldbetrag übergeben, den dieser auf zwei Töpfe zu verteilen hatte. Der mit Aufschrift "Privat" wurde am Ende des Experiments an den Einzahler 1:1 ausbezahlt. Der andere mit Aufschrift "Öffentlich" wurde mit einem Faktor grösser als Eins multipliziert und dann unter allen Versuchsteilnehmern gleich verteilt, was die effizientere Strategie widerspiegelt. Die Ökonomen unter den Teilnehmern verteilten ihr Spielgeld 80 % privat, 20 % öffentlich. Muss das etwas bedeuten? Auf jeden Fall, dass in einer ökonomischen Ausbildung auch ethische Fragen eine Rolle spielen müssen, wenn unsere Gesamtgesellschaft nicht unter der gegenwärtigen Wirtschaftsentwicklung leiden soll.

first day of class

well, i had my first day of classes today. it wasn't my first day back at school, though - yesterday i spent the day standing in lines for things like texkbooks and lockers and free ice cream. :)

anyways, today was spent sitting in lectures as well as standing in lines. i've got two math classes, which seem like they'll be fun (yeah, i like math), and the dreaded cmpt 275, a project course that nobody likes - group work and "deliverables" and we don't even get to choose the groups, ugh.

it was a bit disconcerting being reminded of how windows-centric the world still is. i spent the summer in a nice happy kde bubble and now i have to deal with courses where it's assumed everyone uses windows... i was somewhat relieved to find out the cmpt 275 teacher will accept assignments in .odf format as well as .doc. *sigh* most of these people don't know what kde is. i don't think i've ever seen anyone use it, despite the reasonable percentage of CS students with linux installed.

i miss kde. i miss having a laptop, too, although this n810 is really handy on campus. i haven't had time to install ssh or anything like that on here, the default software's not so good for following mailing lists or rss, and my desktop comp is being weird (plus there's a guest sleeping in the computer room), so i've not got much idea what's going on in the community lately.

the good news is, i have ordered a laptop (dell m1330, dunno when it'll arrive), and since i have no class tomorrow i'm planning to spend the day dealing with software and data recovery n'stuff. :)

Das Atommüll-Zwischenlager ("Versuchsendlager") Asse im Landkreis Wolfenbüttel enthält nicht nur 126.000 Fässer mit insgesamt 46.900 Kubikmetern teilweise hochradio- aktiven Atommülls (Brennstäbe), sondern auch grosse Mengen von schwach radio- aktiver Lauge, mit Strahlungswerten von bis zum Elffachen des gesetzlichen Grenzwerts. Täglich dringen bis zu 12.000 Kubikmeter Wasser in das löcherige Salzbergwerk ein und vermischen sich dort mit vorhandener, radioaktiv verseuchter Flüssigkeit.. Diese wurde ohne atomrechtliche Genehmigung in die Tiefe gepumpt. Das Problem war intern seit Jahren bekannt und konnte jetzt nicht mehr weiter vertuscht werden. Bundesumweltminister Sigmar Gabriel: "Sämtliche Befürchtungen über den Zustand der Asse haben sich bestätigt". Na, danke.

Major ice-shelf loss for Canada

Ward Hunt is the largest of the remnant ice shelves

The ice shelves in Canada's High Arctic have lost a colossal area this year, scientists report.

The floating tongues of ice attached to Ellesmere Island, which have lasted for thousands of years, have seen almost a quarter of their cover break away.

One of them, the 50 sq km (20 sq miles) Markham shelf, has completely broken off to become floating sea-ice.

Researchers say warm air temperatures and reduced sea-ice conditions in the region have assisted the break-up.

"These substantial calving events underscore the rapidity of changes taking place in the Arctic," said Trent University's Dr Derek Mueller.

"These changes are irreversible under the present climate."

Satellite images show the loss of the Markham Ice Shelf over the last year

Scientists reported in July that substantial slabs of ice had calved from Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, the largest of the Ellesmere shelves.

Similar changes have been seen in the other four shelves.

As well as the complete breakaway of the Markham, the Serson shelf lost two sections totaling an estimated 122 sq km (47 sq miles), and the break-up of the Ward Hunt has continued.

Cold remnants

The shelves themselves are merely remnants of a much larger feature that was once bounded to Ellesmere Island and covered almost 10,000 sq km (3,500 sq miles).

Over the past 100 years, this expanse of ice has retreated by 90%, and at the start of this summer season covered just under 1,000 sq km (400 sq miles).

Much of the area was lost during a warm period in the 1930s and 1940s.

"Long meltwater lakes" were imaged on the Markham shelf in 2005

Temperatures in the Arctic are now even higher than they were then, and a period of renewed ice shelf break-up has ensued since 2002.

Unlike much of the floating sea-ice which comes and goes, the shelves contain ice that is up to 4,500 years old.

A rapid sea-ice retreat is being experienced across the Arctic again this year, affecting both the ice attached to the coast and floating in the open ocean.

The floating sea-ice, which would normally keep the shelves hemmed in, has shrunk to just under five million sq km, the second lowest extent recorded since the era of satellite measurement began about 30 years ago.

"Reduced sea-ice conditions and unusually high air temperatures have facilitated the ice shelf losses this summer," said Dr Luke Copland from the University of Ottawa.

"And extensive new cracks across remaining parts of the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf mean that it will continue to disintegrate in the coming years."

Loss of ice in the Arctic, and in particular the extensive sea-ice, has global implications. The "white parasol" at the top of the planet reflects energy from the Sun straight back out into space, helping to cool the Earth.

Further loss of Arctic ice will see radiation absorbed by darker seawater and snow-free land, potentially warming the Earth's climate at an even faster rate than current observational data indicates.

Wie peinlicherweise bekannt wurde, hat der brasilianische Geheimdienst Abin Telefonate des Obersten Richters Gilmar Mendes mit Parlamentsmitgliedern abgehört und aufgezeichnet. Kurzentschlossen schickte der Präsident des Landes, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, die gesamte Chefetage der Spionagebehörde nach Hause. Eine Chance haben sie noch: Falls sich nämlich herausstellt, dass alle unschuldig waren. Womit aber niemand rechnet. Jetzt müssen wir dieses rechtsstaatliche und ausgesprochen demokratische Prinzip nur noch in anderen Ländern anwenden.
