Recently, I emailed Chick-fil-A to complain about our experience in one of their restaurants. I feel some sort of loyalty to CFA, so it was weird filing a complaint.  But I felt it was my duty to do so.  I emailed CFA through their web site and received a quick reply apologizing for our experience and thanking us for letting them know.  And they mailed us some coupons for free food.

I also received a letter from the owner of the CFA in which we had the bad experience.  He apologized and said he would talk with the crew that was working the night we were there. He asked us to give his location another chance.  And he offered to give us free food the next time we came in.  All we had to do was find him or tell the manager who we were and what happened and our meal would be free.

Now, trust me.  I did not set out to see how much free food we could get out of this. We love CFA, and we’ll be back (not to that one location) over and over. But, in my mind, we got two totally different responses from CFA.

The corporate offices made it easy for us. They sent us the free food coupons for us to use at any CFA we choose.

The local restaurant made it difficult for us. They offered free food, but said we had to work to get it. And not just work for it, but come in and publicly confess to being the ones who complained.

Free food is nice. HOW you give someone free food matters a whole lot.

Chompies is three separate entities all in one convenient location. The bakery, deli and restaurant all have an extensive menu. It includes things like omelets, skillets, sandwiches, salads, breads, cakes, pastries, bagels, just about anything you can imagine. The menu even offers items that cater to a gluten-free diet, which is a rare thing to come by.

The New York style restaurant has a very laid back feeling. It seems like a place where people can have a quick lunch or even hang around and drink some coffee.         Alhamdulillah kita masih diberi kesempatan mengecapi nikmat kemulian Ramadhan. Semoga amalan kita di Ramadhan ini lebih baik dari Ramadhan yang lalu dan semoga kita bertemu dengan Lailatul Qadr.  Saya tulis perkara ini setelah satu pertanyaan oleh rakan saya berbangsa Cina yang mempertikaikan kenapa restoran mamak masih dibuka pada siang hari pada bulan Ramadhan.  Susah juga nak jelaskan, nak dikatakan perbezaan mahzab, pening pulak member ni.  Jalan mudah, saya minta di buka blog saya dan baca pada hari ini tentang pertanyaan itu.

         Seperti biasa di bulan Ramadhan ni, semua kedai makan, gerai makan Islam tutup pada waktu siang dan buka sebelah petang bagi menyediakan juadah berbuka bagi umat Islam.  Jika ada yang engkar dan buka pada siang hari, peniaga dan pelanggan yang beragama Islam akan diambil tindakan dari pihak berkuasa terutama dari Jabatan Agama Islam negeri. 

          Tetapi keadaan berbeza pada sebilangan kedai makan atau restoran mamak atau India Muslim.  Kebanyakannya berniaga sepanjang siang hari di bulan Ramadhan.  Malah ada yang dibuka 24 jam.  Sama seperti bulan-bulan lain.  Malah tiada tindakan dikenakan pihak berkuasa terhadap restoran India Muslim ini.  Adakah pihak berkuasa  mengklasifikasikan restoran India Muslim sama seperti restoran franchise yang lain seperti Mc D, KFC & lain-lain dan ada imuniti untuk berniaga di sepanjang hari bulan Ramadhan ini. Bila ditanya, alasan yang diberi, kerana mereka terpaksa menyediakan makanan sarapan i.e roti canai, teh tarik dan makan tengahari buat pelanggan  bukan Islam. Padahal banyak lagi restoran dan gerai makan bukan Islam boleh dituju oleh orang bukan Islam.  Restoran fastfood pun ada. Bagi yang tak puasa, jadikan restoran mamak sebagai port untuk dapatkan makan minum.  Bak kata seorang rakan saya restoran mamak ni papan iklan terpampang kalimah Bimillah. Frame khat ayat suci di kebanyakan restoran mamak lebih banyak dari restoran makanan Islam yang lain. Tapi itu semuanya hiasan semata.

        Sebagai pengguna Islam, marilah kita renungkan.  Jika Ramadhan yang mulia ini tidak dihormati peniaga-peniaga sebegini, seolah-olah memperlekeh Allah  hendakkah kita pekena roti canai dan teh tarik restoran mamak yang engkar ini.  Jika kemuliaan bulan Ramadhan tidak dihayati, bagaimana pula dengan kemuliaan dan kesucian makanan yang dihidangkan kepada kita?  Bak kata orang hukum Allah boleh langgar, dengan sesama manusia apakan lagi. Boh saja la. Apa ada hal. Kepada pengusaha-pengusaha restoran Mamak tolonglah hormati bulan yang mulia ini. Tutuplah sebelah siang dibulan yang mulia ini.  Jangan hanya mementingkan keuntungan  dan jangan sampai DIBOIKOT baru nak berubah....wasalam..ajid vip boys.

1. Wenn du in Fenwick lebst, kannst du dir Kissen, Decke und Bettwäsche leihen. Dies ist zumindest für die ersten Nächte praktisch. Aber Achtung: Keine sagt dir das, du musst explizit fragen und wenn du nicht zu den normalen Öffnungszeiten ankommst, gib vorher am besten bescheid, dass du diese Dinge benötigst.
2. Lunch in der Kantine ist zwar ganz gut, aber auf die Dauer eintönig und teuer. Viele Studenten bringen sich was mit, Sandwiches etc. In vielen Büros, Fluren, stehen auch Mirkowellen in denen sich die Studenten und Profs Fertiggerichte warm machen.
3. Freitags ist immer Geek Beer im Computer Science Building. Bier ist günstig und ab und an gibt es auch umsonst zu essen. Empfehlenswert für den Start in den Freitag abend oder wenn man nix vor hat.
4. Erscheint pünktlich zu den Kursen. Wenn da steht 9h anfang, dann ist das auch 9h.
5. Besorgt euch ein Notebook. WLAN gibt es überall und auch Arbeitsplätze mit Netzwerk und Strom sind in Hülle und Fülle vorhanden.
6. Bleibt ihr nur für ein Semester, sorgt dafür dass ihr nur für ein Semester Versicherung und BusPass zahlen müsst.
7. Lest die Flyer, oft gibt es Essen irgendwo umsonst. Super zum Geld sparen und Leute kennen lernen!

I previously wrote about Sawyer's in June. At the time, the restaurant was only open for lunch and dinner. Beginning Labor Day weekend, they will now be open continously from Friday morning at 7AM to 3PM at Sunday.  The restaurant has also expanded their breakfast and lunch menues while added a select number of entrees for dinner service.

In an effort to increase lunch traffic, Sawyer's is also creating a lunch express option. Certain items can be ordered with a guaranteed delivery time of 10 minutes, or less.  The express menu is only available 11 AM to 2 PM during the week.

Since the speed of service was one of my reasons for not making Sawyer's a regular lunch spot, I'm looking forward to checking out the new and improved menu.  Don't get me wrong, I don't want to be rushed and I didn't think they were overly slow but when the place is hopping and many things are made to order, you can't expect a quick in and out for lunch.

Helvetica appeared on both the packaging and menu (and after further investigation, most of their printed collateral material). While "Mmmmm...Toasty" is a thing of Quiznos' past, the use of Helvetica in their designs is in.

Quiznos, well known for its tasty toasted sub sandwiches, has (in my mind) done a fairly decent job of keeping their designs (print, web and commercials) clean, simple, readable and appealing to the masses. And these 4 points (coincidentally enough) are very similar points that are made for designers who are Pro Helvetica (it is clean, simple, readable and appealing to the masses).

While using Helvetica isn't much of a typographic risk (in this instance), the use of it here is quite conceivable. Some designs might require a unique typeface to get dominate the space and get the emotional message across. However, using Helvetica on this menu compliments the design and keeps the focus on the tasty photo (minus the meat) and message.

There is a time and place to use Helvetica, and Quiznos has landed on theirs.

I decided she should have a happy paper serving day dinner. (Plus, since I've known her, weekends have been off-limits. She had to spend her time with him.)

I invited her to go eat with the babies and me at Cheddar's. So, she brought her two boys, and after a loooooong wait outside, our brood of seven (with two high chairs and a sling) finally got seated.

We had an adorable waiter. I think his name was Austin or someting like that. I'm sure he was around 18....way too young for us, of course.

That did not stop Jo from getting her flirt on! I was impressed to say the least.

I, who haven't had a boyfriend in like two years, have only dated a handful of guys in those two years. I have zero self-confidence when it comes to meeting random guys. I feel like I'm not attractive, too fat, plus who finds attraction in a woman crawling under the table (baby and bottle in arms) to retrieve the plastic train her two-year-old has thrown down for the twentieth time? I am so out of practice in terms of flirting.

Still, I thought Jo, of all people, would be even more out of practice and akward with it than I! She's been out of the scene way longer.

I was wrong. She's a natural.

We need to go out to eat more often. I think I could learn a thing or two from her!

In a previous post, I've mentioned Magushi on Peel Street, a new yakitori restaurant which found its niche through offering a wide selection of sake (rice wine) and innovative yakitoris. Yakitoritei, on the other hand, took a safer approach, offering a very solid selection of traditional yakitoris; you won't find some fancy beef rolled into balls marinated with stuff you've never heard of before. Rather, you'll find the usual beef, chicken, lamb, etc. in their "original" form.

Anyway, my buddies and I wanted siu yeh and so we decided to visit Yakitoritei's Tin Hau branch the other night because they have a Late Night Special Menu (available from Mondays to Sundays from 23:00 to 02:30, except eve of special holidays and special holidays). The deal is HKD 10 per skewer of a la carte yakitori, but at least 2 skewers per item.

Don't expect to find lamb racks for HKD 10 though, the "a la carte" menu serves a reasonable, but small list of items to choose from; if you still want lamb racks, that'll still set you back HKD 30-40 per piece!

Even with a supposedly good deal, the bill ended up to be about HKD 150 per head with drinks (in our case, a bottle of Asahi Beer each). Definitely not cheap especially if you are going during regular hours, but frankly, Yakitoritei is quite the setting to be chit-chatting with your buddies over beer and some great beer food.

Saturday is my favorite day, you get up late do some shopping and cleaning up and then you head for a nice lunch. The restaurant Schuetzenruh is a really rustic swiss place near the Albisgüetli. It has a lovely garden and serves swiss food. Since I've already tried half the menu I opted for a vegetarian dish. A mixed salad to get started followed by a picata courgette with safron risotto and one of those well-loved warm half tomatoes. Salad isn't worth discussing, it was normal. The picata courgette was really nice, it lacked a bit of salt but otherwise was cooked nicely, the light batter let you still taste the courgette, an excellent veggie dish. The risotto tasted like it came straight out of the Knorr Risotto "Just-add-water-and-shake" package. It was dry, lacking any creaming consistency and tasted strange. I will be back, since prices are very fair (check bill), the garden is nice and a large part of the dishes are good standard swiss fare.

It's located in RTP, which should be seriously exciting since there are very few nice places to eat in the park.

Anyway, I have yet to go myself, but a friend went with her husband for their anniversary and they were disappointed.  Regardless of the how the food was (reportedly just ok), it also sounds like they missed an incredible opportunity to springboard off the whole green thing.

Anybody been there and want to comment?  As of right now, I'm not that motivated to go.

In the Middle Ages, the charming building was part of the famous Trinitarian Monastery. Completely restored, the hotel offers 30 comfortable rooms, a restaurant and garden-terrace, a garden, an old-inn, private parking and a garage for motor-bikes.

The hotel is open from 20 March to 3 November 2008.

Sono ovviamente esclusi dalla lista tutti gli pseudo ristorantini a caro prezzo vicino a piazza Dam, noti per i loro prezzi esagerati e la scortesia.

I rezzi variano dai 15-20 euro per i ristoranti etnici ai 60 per i buoni ristoranti un po' chic.

Diciamo che l'arredamento non è di norma un elemento discrimitario in Olanda: non si può normalmente evincere più di tanto il prezzo dall'apparenza. Ci sono diffatti locali molto eleganti dai prezzi contenuti (sui 25 euro a testa) e locali che all'apparenza sembrano dello stesso livello in cui si paga oltre 50. La differenza la fa, la maggior parte delle volt, il cibo. Bisogna andare un po' per conoscenza oppure se non dispone di cotali conoscenze, di recensie, di recensioni.

Di norma i ristoranti di Amsterdam sono tutti gezellech (cosy, accoglienti, carini, caldi)

Il ristorante, un po' particolare, Nomads. Cucina marocchina. 10-40 euro pp.

Le ciel bleu, 2 stelle Michelin. Prezzo non riportato :)

Café Americain. Fino a 25 euro per uno spuntino (non è propriamente un ristorante). Vicino a Leidsplein, il Cafè Americain è uno stupendio esempio di Art Noveau. Contrariamente all'Italia, prendere un caffè seduti costa sempre 2 euro (per buona pace di Luigi che quasi non voleva entrare), così come in piedi e in qualsiasi cafè e ristorante della città.

De Ondeugd. L'atmosfera è sempre molto pacata, velata da luci soffuse tendenti all'arancione, rosso. Una palla da discoteca anni 70 non è una cosa che stupisce un popolo che è abituato a fare e a dire quello che gli piace.

Il ristorante Caruso. Fino a 40 euro pp.

Tout d'abord il ne faut pas s'y méprendre: Sushi Ba est un tout petit corner où on va pour dejeuner sur le pouce. Vous ne viendrez pas chez eux pour feter un anniversaire avec une quinzaine de potes...

La décoration est tendance avec une peinture verte pomme et un bar tout blanc. Bon, les aller-retour incessants des livreurs n'est pas forcement des plus agreables, mais on s'en accomode...

La carte est tres 'nouveau resto japonais avec plein de trucs tout nouveau'. Le poisson est frais, meme si le choix n'est pas fou. Les sushis sont correct, bien qu'ils patissent du principal défaut de toutes les chaines de ce genre: la quantité de riz est astronomique !

En entrée, les classiques salade de choux (un peu fade), soupe miso (meilleure qu'avant), mais aussi des nouveautés telles que les tartares de saumon ou de thon accompagné d'avocat, assez bourratifs.

Les menus sont assez classiques, avec des yakitoris, des makis, des sushis, des sashimis, .... Mais il y a aussi des préparations innovantes. J'entends déjà les puristes crier au scandale, " ouais le jour ou je te verrai commander ca, j'egorgerai ta mere...". Un peu de changement de temps en temps n'a jamais tuer personne. On a testé en exclu mondiale le maki "poulet mayonnaise" sans nori: tout un programme! On nous sert d'ENORME maki blindé de riz (et quand je dit blindé c'est un bien faible euphémisme), avec au centre de petit morceaux de poulet mélangé à de la mayonnaise. Pour être honnête, la quantité de riz écrase un peu le goût du poulet, et on pourrait presque nourrir tout une famille pendant une semaine tellement il sont bourratifs... Mais s'était sympa quand même.

En conclusion, Sushi Bâ est un petit sushi sympa quand on à la flemme de faire à manger le week end. Les plats sont corrects, les prix aussi. Dommage que les cuisiniers (pour ne pas dire sushi ya) aient eu une crampe sur le riz. Bon ca ne vaut pas un Kilala ou un Yamamoto pour leur produits d'une fraicheur incroyable ou leur ambiance, mais tout le monde n'habite pas rue Saint-Anne...

Ces nouvelles bouteilles arrivaient au Canada cette fin de semaine. Mais elles ne sont pas disponibles partout, seulement dans des restos et bars branchés. Parce que boire du coke, dans une bouteille d'aluminium qui plus est, c'est en voie de devenir branché.. ça l'air.

Personnellement, je les trouve affreuses.
