The Dark Knight has opened to rave reviews, many have argued solely because of Heath Ledger’s

The Dark Knight has opened to rave reviews, many have argued solely because of Heath Ledger's portrayal of The Joker. Whether or not you agree, however, one thing is clear to me - Heath Ledger gave the performance of his life in The Dark Knight.

Actually, I'll have to rephrase that, and paraphrase Kevin Smith - he didn't so much give a performance as he did disappear into the role of The Joker. He nailed him perfectly, making all those subtle contradictions Joker is known for come alive.

There are things Joker does that are not supposed to be funny, that on paper look sick, or disturbing, that Heath managed to make the audience laugh at - for instance, telling Batman "you complete me." That sentence is probably the most important sentence in the film. The theater I was in was filled with a bunch of jackasses, and they laughed at it like it was a joke, but he was serious. Other examples stick out as well, such as his delivery of the line "No, I'm not crazy" when asked by a mobster. There's no real way to describe what Ledger does, other than to say it's simply the greatest performance I've ever seen. The way he carried himself, his history (which is "multiple choice") little things like his voice, the psychology of the character, in particular the things he wants Batman to do ("I want it, I want it... Come on... hit me!") all harken back to the comic character. (It helps the script was clearly top-notch, with influences by Loeb and Sale, Alan Moore, and, the one that really sticks out to me, Frank Miller.)

Ledger went to great lengths to get to that point. He locked himself in a hotel room for a month, in order to become the character. He kept a journal of The Joker's thoughts, which boggles my mind. For the shooting of The Dark Knight, he was The Joker, and that probably had a hand in his death. for a long time, he couldn't sleep, his mind was racing - he would take two Ambien, which would work for "about an hour," and then wake up "mind racing."

Heath Ledger has never been one to act conventionally - on break he'd spend most of his time with the crew of The Dark Knight, not the cast. It's been rumored he didn't really enjoy spending time with other actors, who, let's face it can be elitists at times. He also took up the role of The Joker, which was, at the time, incredibly controversial. Heavy hitters were vying for that role, Adrien Brody, Robin Williams, even Steve Carell jokingly, and, oddly enough, The Joker becomes the super villain equivalent of what has been Ledger's career. This anarchic interpretation of The Joker, this world without rules, is all more deserving of an Oscar than anything else so far this year, bar no film, no actor, no performance, and if he doesn't get an Oscar for this role, it's the Academy admitting they don't take certain films seriously, devaluing the art form they're supposed to represent.

This is the culmination of his life's work. The only thing dissapointing about The Dark Knight is that the true star of the show never got to see his final masterpiece complete.

This post is dedicated to Heath Ledger.

A Robin Williams comedy called, The Worlds Greatest Dad. Hmm… ordinarily, I’d recommend you run for the hills in order to escape the impending tsunami of schmaltz. But look again. For this Robin Williams comedy is directed by Bobcat Goldthwait.Yes, the Bobcat Goldthwait who lit up two Police Academy movies with his unique blend of punk-meets-fingernails-down-blackboard comedy. The Bobcat Goldthwait whose directorial career began with the cult favourite, Shakes The Clown, The Bobcat Goldthwait whose last movie, Sleeping Dogs Lie was about a woman enjoying carnal knowledge with a dog. Yeah, it’s fair to say that The Worlds Greatest Dad is not going to your average Robin Williams comedy. In fact, it’s fair to say that it’s going to be as black as midnight. Williams will star as a high school teacher who finds his son dead after what appears to be an autoerotic accident. He fakes a suicide note in an attempt to give his son some dignity in death, only for the note to leak to the school paper.

Ouch. Dark stuff, indeed. Goldthwaite wrote the screenplay, too, while Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly is one of the producers, through his newly-formed production and financing company, Darko. Sounds great to me. Williams gets a bad rap these days, with a lot of comedians imitating his manic style of delivery, but when the man’s on form, he’s one of the true greats. And when he underplays, it can be something special indeed. I’ve got high hopes for this one!

the debate between menteri penerangan malaysia dato Shabery chek and the de-facto leader of pakatan rakyat (DAP,PKR,PAS) coalition, Dato seri Anwar Ibrahim took about 1hour last night. live broadcast(TV3, TV9 ) anwar originally challenged najib or badawi to the debate but they declined the invitation politely.

the debate is entitled DEBAT : Hari Ini Membentuk Kerajaan, Esok Turun Harga Minyak
stop subsidy okay fine with me, but tell 'the rakyat' where did the subsidy money go?

i know many people would want some summary points so here you go. its debated in bahasa melayu but i will put it in english language. i dont guarentee it to be 100% accurate summary but i will try my best.

anwar : the great hike in fuel oil price is very burdensome and somewhat not that necessary, furthermore it will hurt the economy, as you can see its slumping now

chek : the rise in oil price is a global issue, its not only malaysia that is facing this problem. some countries have prices more heftier than malaysia. if we take that into consideration , ours are still given at a privillaged rate by comparison

anwar: yes, i know. but as a net exporter of petroleum country, we should compare with other oil exporting country. did you know that amongst exporter countries our price is currently most expensive with the great removal of subsidy ; by comparison

chek: we malaysians can handle this oil crisis, our economy growth is about 6% this year. our economic growth only marginally affected by the oil hike if any; and not bad compared to venezuela,somalia..( listing all the 3rd world countries) this slump is also a universal issue, all nations are facing it. economic growth is on a slowdown. furthermore, inflation in our nation is well controlled below 6%

anwar: can handle it, those BN-puteras(not bumiputera) and those well off can handle it. how about those low income wage-earners(RM below 2000) the least the government can do is to tier up, by rising it slowly. instead of these steep rise.talking about inflation 4.8-6% ? i think that is outdated, if you go out to the streets to buy fish and rice ,grocery ...etc i am afraid that saying even 30% inflation is a underestimate.

chek : dato seri, you're saying this as if its only malaysia's problem, and put the blame on the ruling party's shoulder, this fuel thing is a global phenomenon, the food crisis/shortage is also a global problem. we are not the people that make the oil price 140USD,its the increased in demand and the conflicts in the middle east and sabotage works in sub-saharan nations.many countries some have oil prices subsidised to cost around 15-27 cents by the government but still having inflation problem.

anwar: yes, at least they have low oil price and high inflation, we malaysians suffer a double blow from high oil price and high inflation. and food crisis is not a exactly global problem unlike fuel price if you checked properly.lets move to petronas, being a country that currently still produces impressive tons of oils daily for export, what makes the govt. unafforable to sustain subsidy. i suggest the rise shouldnt be this drastic. if i am the president of malaysia tomorrow, insha-allah, i will lower it by 50 cents from the current RM2.80 p/L. this is my promise.

chek: petronas is a company earlier founded by tuanku abdul razak in the 70's if i am not mistaken when the oil price rose from 10 usd a barrel to 40 usd per barrel. at that time the whole rakyat(citizen) supports his bold move, and tun mahathir have expanded it to 33 countries in exploration(cari-gali). something to be proud of. and i heard from your hollars and speech to your supporters bashing petronas. there's the patriotism. petronas now holds about 40% of the total control and subs contracts to exxon and shell.

anwar: you're carried away there and you have misunderstood my concerns. petronas has now somewhat become a private company, with government getting royalties only from it just like foreign exxon and shell. from a county/government owned company , it has somewhat being owned by the elite fews, (BN-puteras? no evidence but suspected) getting royalties? i thought the petroleum belongs to the countries to all malaysian citizens. how do you explain that? transparency? accounting? shouldnt the profit be distributed to all malaysians in the form of subsidy. btw the oil price hike to 140USD have made it more profitable, since we are selling at a better price and with the greater earnings we can subsidize with the same percentage of total profit without the so called 'increased burden' which i believe is a myth. before we run out of oil, we should improve our infrastructure and transport system, which is not yet fulfilled from the promise the government gave when rising 30-50 cents last year. and still nothing have been done to our transportation system, no improvement, today in 2008. not to forget the government promised to more fuel hike in the year 2008 as promised before election until 2009. a promise is not kept.

chek: its easy for you to say now that you're the oppisition and not holding the government. i could to the same with empty promises, i can even say i will give free fuel oil , free! but we have to be realistic. what would you do when one day we run of petroleum, we are going to run out of oil by 2015
what will you do then, when we are net importer of petroleum at the moment.

anwar: first of all, we have to read the reports from petronas carefully, it says if we havent find new oilwells by 2015 we will be net exporter. well Fine, 2015 you say? so since the government is aware of that possiblity just like me , what have the government been doing with the extra funds taken away from the subsidy. its more than billions i heard. but i have not heard any plans done by the government, no new infrastructure, better facility for rural areas, for the kampungs ? NO. hospitals , new hospitals upgrades and facilities? NO. abolishment of TOLL. NO. and what does expanding LRT in kl do to help people of other states. they dont get the benefit. govt spending is too centralised. at least half subsidized , half elsewhere, so all malaysians can get the benefits, instead of mega projects in cities to cronies and favoured few, what nelayan (fisherman) and rural people get, can they taste the help from government ? and the cancellation of PORR(penang outer ring railway -LRT) recently. so where the heck is all the funds going, at least back in the mahathir days even post 1997 , there are new things coming up, nothing. we hear no plans, and there are no announcement made, nothing, where are all the money taken from subsidy and all the rest of the money, taxed money? bocor? ( leaking) thats the problem with the current government. taking and sucking up all funds and taxpayers money and nothing have been done,no plans, no roll-out of new projects , new schools or whatever, mismanagement, corruption, and bad governance ... if the government is continually led in this fashion and manner, mark my words that the government will fall into a greater slump in just 2-3 months. thats what the pakatan rakyat is here for , sabri chek . its to give a better offer to all malaysians that deserve better.

whoever you think is a winner of this debate, live-debate of politicians is a milestone in malaysian democracy. hurrah.here is what malaysians think of the government

there's some merit in not subsidising and using this money for something else. but what is the something else?

better transportation?- no new LRT lines, nothing for sabah and sarawak and other states besides selangor. its too centralised. PORR is cancelled. the bus thing by skomi is not reaching its outcome of boosting transportation.

better facilities? newer projects? newer industries? other subsidies in schooling and university? hospital equiptment? NOPE. nothnig is heard from the government yet. where did all the 'fuel subsidy money' went then? accountability please.

analogy : if your dad says he's not going to give you RM5 for your daily allowance, then replace it with something else. home-made packed lunch, food from home to be brought to school. dont just take away the allowance dont tell your kid what else you're going to provide in compensation for the deduction in allowance to RM2. if you still cant understand the concept, well =.='' YOU F***ING IDIOT.
i'll qoute lewis black and robin williams in Man of The Year '' politicians are like diapers, after a while it become SO full of shit" so it has to be changed from time to time. we are wearing the same 'diaper' for 51 years now from 31st august 1957 to present day 2008. dont you think its about time to change, especially when it smells so bad, especially after Tun Mahathir handover his power.

Robin Williams just signed a deal to star in a dark comedy titled "Worlds Greatest Dad", the film was written and will be directed by comedian/actor Bobcat Goldthwait. You probably remember Bobcat Goldthwait in the early "Police Academy" films.

The synopsis is about a single dad and high school teacher who finds his son dead after an autoerotic accident. In an effort to give his son dignity in death, he pens a suicide note that is accidentally leaked to the student paper.

Variety Reports:

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117988990.html?categoryid=13&cs=1

It's about time Robin's found a decent role for a change. He's been choosing horrible films as of late. His movie "RV" is probably the worse he's ever done.

Today on yahoo, I saw a report on Eddie Murphy movies. The main point of the story was that even though his last ten or so movies have been critical duds, they have still done very well at the box office. That is until this past weekend. His last movie, “Meet Dave,” bombed. Not only did it bomb, but it bombed like it was London during World War II. So, in what I feel is a public service I am about to perform, I am going to share with you this open letter I wrote to Eddie Murphy himself.

Dear. Mr. Eddie Murphy,

Hello Mr. Murphy. My name is Johnny. I run a semi-below average in popularity blog known as Johnnyism. I’m sure you’ve maybe heard of it. I want to start off with saying how much I enjoy your work Mr. Murphy. You have glimpses of comedic genius. I could not picture anyone else doing the voice of donkey in the Shrek movies. But Mr. Murphy, it’s time to pull yourself together. Your last handful of movies have been..well…they’ve been worse than being forced to watch a full season of The OC. So for your benefit, I am going to list you a few reasons why your star has fallen so very far.

1. You insist on doing movies in which you play numerous characters.

At first this was sort of cool. It was rare. Heck, it was sort of comical. But then you did it again. And again. And again. I half expect that if I am ever invited to meet your family Mr. Murphy, then I would only meet you and you in eight different costumes. You have the ability to be funny without dressing up like a woman. Leave that for the British.

2. All your movies are “family” movies.

Most of your movies lately could be considered either family movies or movies geared toward teenagers. Anyone that tells me they enjoyed Norbit I automatically loose a touch of respect for. And it’s not you Mr. Murphy. I like you. I just don’t like the stuff you’re making this decade. You have so much talent and you waste it. If you’re going to do a family movie, do one that’s actually funny and smart. While I will admit to sort of liking Dr. Doolittle and Daddy Day Care, I don’t own those movies on DVD and I feel quite all right with that.

3. You seem to choose money over movie

I dunno if this is true, but to me it seems that you, Mr. Murphy, choose movies that will probably make you some money. But what happened to taking a chance? You have enough money now that you could afford to. You could be an amazing actor for all I know. But how would anyone know with the movie choices you are making. Look at Robin Williams. Sure he has done some over the top comedies. But he’s also done some stuff that shows he can act (see the movie “One Hour Photo”). Same with Jim Carrey. I know you have that in you Mr. Murphy. You can do good comedy. It doesn’t even have to be rated R comedy. You are powerful enough that you can make your own choices as to what movies you get involved with. So why Norbit and why Meet Dave?

So you see Mr. Murphy, I just worry about you. You have so much talent yet don’t use it. Please do not waste what was given to you.

So that was my letter to Eddie Murphy. I have faith in him. I know he can make a great movie. He has that ability.

Also today, President Bush lifted the executive ban on offshore oil drilling. This is a response to the rising gas prices. Don’t you love how presidents always seem to actually accomplish things in the last year of their presidency? Maybe we should change it to one year terms so things would get done. Now am I saying that by lifting this ban that it would solve everything? Oh no. But it’s a step. He has put the pressure on the democrats, who have yet to give a concrete answer on why congress won’t lift their own ban. Now, I rarely come out and write on here my own views on politics. That’s not my area of expertise. I’d just be giving you my opinion on things that you’d either agree or disagree with. With that being said, what would opening up drilling there hurt? I know the environmentalists are up in arms over it. Claiming that it will hurt the environment and coastal areas. There has never been a major disaster involving oil over water. Ever.

EDITORS NOTE: The author wishes you to overlook the Exxon Valdez incident.

So the real question is apparent. Are we willing to risk the lives of thousands of innocent penguins and fish to drill for oil so we can drive to Wendy’s to get a jr. bacon cheeseburger? The answers is yes. Now, don’t get me wrong. I love penguins. But if they come between me and my vanilla frosty, then I say put all those cute little butlers in peril. We must drill. For if we do not take every precaution necessary to ensure that we will always have gasoline, then there will come a day when there will be no more gas, and we will no longer be able to enjoy Wendy’s delicious new milkshakes.

So today you had it all. You had my plea to Eddie Murphy to start making better movies. And you had my very small report on the President opening the ban on drilling. Now for those of you who are fans of my ongoing series Getting To Know The States, do not fret. They will continue from time to time. Is there a state you wish for me to tackle next that I haven’t already? Let me know.

THIS BLOG WAS BROUGHT TO YOU BY WENDY’S. It’s waaaaay better than fast food.

This man really has had an illustrious career. Before his ultimate masterpiece graces all of our brainsicles this weekend lets take a quick look back at the only director to, quite impressively, not direct a single disappointing movie in his entire career. I’m thinking the chronological breakdown would be the most appropriate.

The Following - 1998

Chris not only directed his first official feature, but he wrote it as well. This under-seen gem portrays a man who likes to follow strangers around London with harmless intentions, until he breaks his own rules and follows a subject more than once, intertangling himself in a web of lies and murder. Despite being shot in black in white, this film won’t be remembered as a classic, but it is an incredibly impressive debut from a young director and should be checked out by all those Nolan enthusiasts who never had the pleasure.

Memento - 2000

I can vividly remember seeing Memento in theaters for the first time. It changed the way I thought about films and is largely responsible for the media whore I’ve become today. With twisted non-linear plotlines (the pieces shot in color are going backwards and the pieces shot in black and white are going forward) this thriller cemented Chris Nolan in my mind as the director to watch for in the new millennium. Memento follows Lenny, a man with no short-term memory trying to pick up the pieces of the puzzle to find the man who killed his wife. Nolan puts the viewer right in Lenny’s shoes experiencing scenes with no preface except the notes written down in Lenny’s pockets or tattooed to his body. When the black and white scenes fade into color and the two stories meet to reveal a horrifying truth, Memento’s ending ties up every loose end and satisfies like few films manage to do. When watched a second (third, fourth and fifth) time, Nolan’s genius can truly be appreciated as you can follow each intricacy of this backwards tale. Nolan penned this script based on his brother Jonathan’s short story, and it truly is a masterpiece in every sense.

Insomnia - 2002

After all the praise Nolan received for Memento the big wigs gave him some serious heavy hitters for Insomnia. Starring Hilary Swank (only one Oscar at this point), Al Pacino (Scarface, enough said) and Robin Williams sitting in as the villain, Insomnia took us on a little journey to a small Alaskan town where the sun don’t go down and murder is afoot. Despite being my least favorite of Nolan’s outings, although I’m not surprised since neither Chris nor his brother had anything to do with the script, Insomnia is a great film worthy of at least one viewing.

Batman Begins - 2005

After Joel Schumacher completely destroyed Batman with George Clooney and his pointy nipples my boy Chris Nolan came in and did the unthinkable. He completely reinvented one of the most iconic characters in movie history utilizing Christian Bale and directed / co-wrote the best comic book movie ever made: Batman Begins. If you haven’t seen it yet then you are out of your mind and running out of time. The Joker is coming to Gotham City in a week and you best not be caught in the sequel asking the person next to you who Morgan Freeman’s character is, or you might end up getting punched in the nuts.

The Prestige - 2006

The Prestige is most definitely my favorite Nolan family film from the whole catalogue and will always remain one of my favorite movies of all time. Penned by the Nolan brothers and starring Hugh Jackman and Batman (Christian Bale) as rival magicians, this film takes the high points of every previous Nolan film and bundles them all into a perfect package. Like Memento, the story is nonlinear darting between the present, where Batman is to be hanged for murder, to different pieces of the past sewn together by two rivals reading each other’s diaries. While the supernatural does come into play before the end credits roll the answer you were looking for is in fact quite simple and has been paraded right in front of your face the entire film. The movie opens with Bale’s character asking, “Are you watching closely?” Despite watching incredibly closely the twist eluded me until the final moments of the film when it was spelled out explicitly. When seeing this movie for a second time (*SPOILER ALERT*) with the knowledge that Bale’s character is actually two twin brothers, I could tell in each and every scene which brother was sitting in the room. Bale’s acting job here is simply amazing. To be able to play two characters and make them seem like one persona on a first viewing, yet clearly separable as two distinct personalities on a second viewing, is a feat I’ve never seen accomplished in a film. If you’ve only seen The Prestige once I really suggest sitting down for round two, only in multiple viewings can it all be taken in.

The Dark Knight - 2008

Appropriately taking the title of the best of the Batman comics “The Dark Knight Returns” by Frank Miller, Nolan’s sequel will no doubt match its namesake’s quality despite sporting an entirely different plot that has been kept under wraps locked up in a basement in a secret location in Maleriabekestan. Unlike Begins, the Nolan brothers wrote Knight so I’d expect a non-linear plot line filled with thought provoking bumps along the way. Much of the talk of the town is about Ledger’s Joker, which I’m sure will be haunting, but the idea for this twisted version of a psychopath sprung out of the heads of the Nolan brothers and is as much their child as it is Heath’s. I expect great things, and apparently I’m not alone. Despite theaters adding 3:00 and 6:00 AM showings on Thursday night many are still sold out. It seems that The Dark Knight could shatter all records to become the biggest opening of all time. I’m glad the Nolan brothers are finally getting the respect they deserve, because I think they are both brilliant and the best filmmakers in the industry.

This certainly fulfills the subtitle of my blog. Over the years I've been plagued, plagued by the existence and the ineffable experience that is Popeye. As I was too traumatized by my initial viewing to ever be able to endure more than two minutes of the film at a sitting, what follows is description and analysis from a safe remove; imagine the people hunkered and bunkered miles away during the A-Bomb tests.

On paper, it seemed like a dream.Robert Altman was the director. The casting was impeccable: Robin Williams as Popeye, muttering that distinctive Popeyese to a T; Shelley Duvall, so verisimilous as Olive Oyl it's as if she sprung from the pages of syndication. The rest of the players were solid: Ray Walston as Popeye's father (although I think Burgess Meredith might have been a better choice); the actors portraying Bluto and Wimpy certainly looked the parts and were more-than-adequate performers, and so on. The script was by the imminently competent writer and cartoonist Jules Feiffer, the songs by two certifiable (and I mean that in both senses) geniuses, Harry Nilsson and Van Dyke Parks. The set, constructed on Malta (it's still there and is a popular tourist attraction-- the trivial things my mind retains!) was picture-perfect.

Yet somehow Popeye accomplished whatever is the inverse of synergy, that is, it's less than the sum of its parts. Far less. Kind of like the Grateful Dead. When I inadvertently catch even a few frames of this concoction, the fine hairs at the small of my back go up, a chill pervades my entire body, and I start to feel nauseous, physically ill. The sensation is so immediate and intense, you'd think little 10-year old Pannie was molested and raped in the movie theater when she saw it. It was the single most distressing and powerful cinematic experience of my life. (Now, the way media works, that's the part that would be excerpted and blurbed on the advert or the DVD case:)

It was the single most ... powerful cinematic experience of my life -raves pannonica!

Rave is right. In fact, I think I'm starting to foam at the mouth.

You trust the Nanny with your kids, but what about your husband in the same room with your nanny? Behind closed doors maybe? Look in your lingerie drawers - has your someone been in your lingerie drawer - look again. It's possible the nanny is modeling your silk lingerie for your husband during the children's naptime?

It is crazy to see the multitude of headlines regarding Nannies and husbands hooking up or some accused of hooking up I should say. If worrying that the Nanny is treating the kids well isn’t enough? Now you have to worry about your man too! There is quite a list of men that have done the deed with Nanny…Robin Williams, Jude Law, Michael Jackson, David Beckham, and the list goes on.

The latest headline tells us Ethan Hawke is planning to marry his pregnant (with his child) former Nanny who cared for his children with Uma Thurman, his now ex-wife. That is definitely a juicy scoop but shouldn’t we, “real” women start worrying if these glamorous, movie star women are cheated on with the Nannies? I wouldn’t let it keep me up at night but I would give it a second thought.

This is just one more brick in the wall reminding us to use extra caution when selecting someone to live in your home and care for your children. You really need to not only know this person’s entire history but also trust them and get a good read of their personality. Take advantage of the tools recruiting companies and the online placement agencies are offering. For example, Citinannies.net, an online recruiting network that connects prescreened nannies and caregivers with family employers has an excellent set of professional recruiting tools from the propreitary prescreening process to intensive background checks and recently, pre-employment testing. That extra step just might keep a naughty nanny out of your bedroom!

As much as I hate to admit it, I grew up listening to Bill Cosby. I would listen his stand-up tapes

As much as I hate to admit it, I grew up listening to Bill Cosby. I would listen his stand-up tapes over and over again. Innocuous, but funny, well crafted, and well told. His routine didn't have a subversive bone in its skeleton. Robin Williams would have been next, and when he lets himself go and doesn't rely on stereotypical voices he can still cut it. Early Williams exposed me to a little bit of boundary pushing and prepared me for stumbling upon Richard Pryor's genius. I could see a little of Cosby in his mannerisms, but the content was as edgy as you could get at the time. There are many other influences such as The Goons, Monty Python, John Clarke and, more recently, Joe Rogan, but the passing of George Carlin has brought two into focus for me: the great Bill Hicks, and the aforementioned Carlin.

Aside form Hicks I struggle to think of a comedian that has left such an indelible impression on me. What first grabbed me was his wordplay. I found his banter about phrases like 'near miss' meaning 'near hit' endearing, but then there were things like this:

The Seven Words was brilliant. It fosters a little rebellion, which is to be encouraged.

His movement into Stuff was the precursor to discussing the ills of consumerism. You could tell, in hindsight, that he was working through his own formation on interpreting society. It was great where he was heading.

And this is where he was heading.

Hear the audience mood change? Fantastic! As he got older he became the de facto poster-man for the atheist movement. I don't really get sick of this body of work.

In his last performance he looked, well, not right. But he still had it. With age, he had become blunter, but the message was still there. Misanthropic as all buggery, but sharp as a tack. I wonder who will eventually replace a comic of his stature and be turning over rocks onstage into their 70s? Can't see it, in these times of instant gratification.

The exorcism of Emily Rose (Rete 4, 27/04/08, 23.35): 6 e 1/2, perché non c'è solo L'esorcista.

By Amy Sondova While August Rush is definitely a cool name for a musician, it’s a terrible movie.

By Amy Sondova While August Rush is definitely a cool name for a musician, it’s a terrible movie. Maybe I’m just not into feel-good films that have a limited grasp on reality unless they’re in the sci-fi/fantasy genre. I’m not sure how to classify August Rush except to reemphasize the fact it wasted two hours of my life.

The plot revolves around Evan Taylor (Freddie Highmore), an abandoned 11-year-old boy who has lived in an orphanage in New York his entire life. He hears music in the world around him and believes that his parents are going to come fetch him up one day. Everyone he meets thinks his idealism is crazy, but are impressed with his natural musical ability. In fact, he’s some sort of musical prodigy composing his first piece of music only minutes after learning how to read notes.

Understandably, there are kids who will take to music like a fish to water. However, I doubt a kid who just plucks on a guitar for a couple of hours is going to sound like Carlos Santana shortly thereafter. The story gets more and more ridiculous as it goes along. Evan changes his name to August Rush under the direction of Wizard (Robin Williams), a bitter hoodlum who takes in runaway children and exploits their musical talents to make a buck.

Throughout the movie, August says that he must play his music so his parents can find him. Ironically, his parents are both musicians—Lyla, (Keri Russell), the classically-trained cellist and Louis, (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), the Scottish rocker. One starry night, Lyla and Louis meet, procreate, and are parted. After getting hit by a car, Lyla delivers early and without her knowledge, her father forges her signature, signing away her parental rights. Her father confesses his sin on his deathbed causing Lyla to search for her son 11 years later. Meanwhile, Louis, (who doesn’t know he has a son), can’t forget about Lyla and decides to make contact with her after 11 years. In a bizarre twist of events, music brings them all together and a family that was torn asunder is reunited.

I know I should just suspend my disbelief, but I can’t. I can’t get past the fact that Lyla would have needed a witness to watch her sign her baby away and that there haven’t been orphanages in the United States for over 30 years. A baby put up for adoption has a great chance of being adopted, not institutionalized. Not only that, but Lyla would never be able to extract the information about Evan’s whereabouts from his children and youth caseworker. If the plot is this shaky from the beginning, how are we supposed to believe that Louis loves Lyla after a one-night stand? How can we accept that August is really that talented?

If you want to see more of Keri Russell, rent Season 2 of Felicity. Watching her navigate through the perils of college life is much better than trying to understand this messy plot.

Print copy of review.

Distributie: Robin Williams, Ethan Hawke, Josh Charles

"Oh Captain! My Captain!"

Intotdeauna am trait cu senzatia ca lui Wiliiams i se potrivesc roluri ce imbina tragicul si comicul (Mrs Doubtfire, Jack, Bicentennial Man, What Dreams May Come, Good Will Hunting).
