The Clevelander is a sandwich of mythical quality amongst my circle of friends. My friend Lawrence passed on the tale of the sandwich to me, and I decided to track one down.

The first time I ate a Clevelander, I couldn’t contain myself. The package sat there on the passenger seat of my car, begging to be opened and consumed. Driving 37 miles an hour down East 55th Street, I reached over and peeled the foil wrapper away, revealing the most beautiful sandwich I had ever seen. Buttered, grilled rye bread, lettuce, tomato, raw onion, white and yellow cheese, a beef patty and CORNED BEEF! Sweet lord, it was a vision I couldn’t resist. I reached over and grabbed a half; grease, cheese and some kind of special sauce began running down my hand. I muttered some kind of apology to the gods of car cleanliness and crammed a full quarter of the sandwich into my mouth.

Mmmm … It reaffirmed something I’d known all along: Cleveland is one hell of a place to live. The Clevelander is available only at Biggie’s on the corner of East 55th and Cedar. Look for the painting of the Incredible Hulk on the side of the building. — Clint Holley, guitarist and vocalist, Hayshaker Jones

He cooked this for lunch today. I guess it takes him back to his childhood. This is true Southern Food.

This is really not the healthiest thing in the world, however I have a feeling this is something that Paula Deen would love. It tastes pretty good, but I feel guilty if I eat more than 1/2 a sandwich because I know how much I’d need to work out to work it off. But for the every so often snack, why not try the Fried Potato Sandwich. J

Once again our house was freezing cold this morning. I had to make my breakfast with a blanket wrapped around me, even though I was wearing about 6 layers already. How long is it till summer?

For breakfast before church I had a bowl of quinoa flakes made with soy milk and topped with part of a crumbled blueberry granola plank:

After the first service while sitting outside on the patio I had a Clif Nectar bar for a snack. The flavor of this one tasted weird to me. I don't think I'll get it again.

While my sister went to the high school class for second hour, my mom and I headed over to a couple book stores to find another copy of Around the World in 80 Days for our meeting tonight. Thankfully we found one. I also found a nice Piccadilly notebook on the bargain shelf. It's just like a Moleskine. I love those, and they're not cheap!

On the way home we stopped at taco bell to pick up some food for the rest of the house. It took FOREVER, my mom said, because a new girl was working at the register (I waited in the car).

FINALLY for lunch at home I made a turkey sandwich with the last of the Vegenaise, almond cheese, and some salsa because we were out of tomato. :-) I also had carrots and grapes.

I almost have all my homework finished. Just a few more questions!

I knew the time to take a break from blogging would come some day. It's not a long break. It is a much needed break. Well, until Midterms are over with (about a week or two). School comes first above every other luxury, even blogging. I know ya'll understand, since many of you are students yourselves. Between now and then, I wish you all well

Will be back soon!

Did someone say Velveeta!? I ate a TON of this! Later...I guess it would be called dinner (?), I ate the rest of the package. Not as good as Vegan Mac Un-Cheese from the other day though.

And once again I am back home. It's 4:21 and just now the sun has come over the house far enough to start shining in my bedroom window. I'm soaking in the warmth. :-)

After I got to work this morning, I snacked on this half of a banana with almond butter:

For lunch I had a pita sandwich, grapes, and carrots. I got all this together last night and packed it in my Laptop Lunchbox.

My sandwich contained the last of the hummus, turkey, lettuce, and almond cheese. I microwaved it before I ate it, so the cheese got all melty.

When I got home I had some Kashi Heart to Heart cereal with soy milk. Yum!! I love cereal!

And some more grapes. So sweet, they're just like candy.

Now I have homework to do to prepare for book club tomorrow. Ugh. I better get to it...

As I mentioned, I'd been on the road for business these past few days. I was promoted some time ago, and my company has a policy that newly-promoted managers must attend mgmt. training. As a multi-billion dollar international aerospace defense corporation, my company's people are scattered all over. As a result, such training brings in quite an interesting assortment of folks.

Several times during training, when we were discussing terrible employees or difficult scenarios, a gentlemen in the back of the room would offer up advice in a deep Texas drawl. Each time, he said the very same thing: give'em a Bologna & Cheese Sandwich. This elicited chuckles from those beside him and raised eyebrows from the rest of us. For those of us (the majority) with military backgrounds, oddities such as this are fairly common.

The first day of training concluded with drinks and dinner at a very nice restaurant. After three tall Tanqueray & Tonics, I found the Texan and began to chat. During the conversation, I mentioned some trouble I'd been having with a very obnoxious customer. To be clear, this customer is borderline evil, with sadomasochist tendencies. When I finished, "Bob" looked at me with a blank stare and said, "Give'em a bologna and cheese sandwich."

Okay, I have to know.

Bob explained that, growing up in west Texas, his neighbors were a family that raised hunting dogs. These prized dogs were bought by hunters from around the world, and so they sold for top dollar.A lot of training went into teaching these dogs to hunt, which meant a lot of money was spent on training these dogs.

But, once in awhile, no matter how much time or money was spent, some dogs just won't hunt. Hence the phrase, "That dog won't hunt." This is a problem, because dog trainers don't keep dogs as pets. Dogs are business. Four-legged lines of business.

Okay, so what's the deal with the sandwich?

When a dog won't hunt, the trainer went inside the house and fixed himself lunch. It was always bologna and cheese sandwich. After lunch, he'd fix a sandwich for the non-hunting dog. Behind the house was a field, a big, wide-open field. The kind of field that dogs love to romp around in. The dog trainer brought the non-hunting dog into the field, threw him the sandwich, and said goodbye. As the dog stooped to eat the bologna & cheese sandwich, the trainer shot him in the back of the head.

Morbid.

But Bob looks at me and says, your trouble customer, the one who treats you like shit. The one who makes you feel like a failure. The one who you spend so much time and money on and still he won't do his part . . . throw him a bologna and cheese sandwich.

I know myself. So I know the look on my face was a blank stare that hinted that I was frozen somewhere between total disbelief and life-changing epiphany.

There's a pause, and then Bob tells me that I should be wary of offers to take a walk in the field with my customer. That big, wide-open field, it's littered with corpses. Justifiable homicide in the name of business.

Bob says, "You have to make the sandwich for him, or he's gonna make it for you."

The next day I'm at my desk and the phone rings. It's someone waaaaaay up the food chain. This disembodied voice tells me that our customer, the borderline evil one with sadomasochist tendencies, he's requested that I come work for him, at his location.

The boss on the phone tells me, "He says you would be perfect, and that you'd love the place. It's right on the water, surrounded by forest and very remote. He says it's very peaceful."

a [mostly true] story

Last night a friend and I went on a bit of adventure. We rented the Zipcar Mini and drove out to Langley to the Drive-In. It was a repeat of a thwarted summer adventure and turned out to be a spectacularly awesome evening, but you can't have a proper adventure without snacks and that's where La Grotta comes in.

An Italian deli, La Grotta del Formaggio is a central point on the Drive for all kinds of olives, pastas, spreads, imported dry goods and (of course) cheese, but possibly their best kept secret is that they also make kick-ass sandwiches.

The sandwiches are fully customizeable and can come Meat or Veggie, with your choice of bread: full foccacia (huge), half foccacia, Portuguese bun or baguette. The meat selection ranges from salami to turkey to prosciutto (for $1 extra) and cheeses vary but popular options are provolone, havarti and cheddar. Then you have to decide on the condiments, and this isn't Subway, ok? The condiments are the best part. Hot pickled eggplant, marinated red bell peppers, artichokes, green olives, banana peppers, fresh onion, lettuce and tomato.

I don't really like warm lettuce and tomato, so a typical sandwich for me is half-foccacia on white with prosciutto and provolone cheese, all the fixings minus the lettuce and tomato, and then grilled. It's delicious. This one pictured here is a turkey and swiss cheese sandwich and I did actually get fresh tomatoes on it, just to try something different. Still delicious.

So after having decided in the late afternoon that we were planning a road trip to Langley, I rushed to La Grotta, hoping that they were still open and breathlessly ordered 2 sandwiches. In fact I still had half an hour before they closed (at 6 PM), but the staff is always so genial and friendly that I'm sure I would have still had dinner for the road even if I'd been later.

(Please excuse the shoddy quality of the photographs. I had to take them with my phone.)

I came home today from work and was starving and realized I hadn't use my panini press in awhile. I, of course didn't want just ham and cheese. So I looked in my fridge trying to figure out what kind of sandwich I wanted. With so much talk of fall I was thinking of when my mother made Thanksgiving dinner, she always put onions and apples in her stuffing. I decided on a turkey sandwich with apples....hmmm. I Incorporated the onion by taking some mayo and mixed in just a little Lipton onion soup mix and a pinch of sugar. I spread the mix on some 12 grain whole wheat bread. I then peeled the apple, cored it and cut it into thin slices. I assembled my sandwich turkey first, apples and then a slice of provolone. Sprayed my press with butter spray and pressed my sandwich. I ate it with well a few apple wedges and a glass of green tea. I was quite satisfying.

Hi, my name is Maggan. Welcome to Maggan's kitchen!

Finally (and thankfully), I can enjoy a Subway sandwich any day I want. I pass by it 5 times a week. Today for lunch, I had a foot-long veggie delight with chipotle southwest dressing. Everything but onions, please. My bread was oat-honey. After lunch, I then walked back to work feeling light and satisfied.

Today was my second time there. My first time was the day they opened. Tuesday. It was a soft opening. No frills, no noise, no people, no line. Suited me. I ordered a foot-long steak and cheese on dark bread with oil and hot chili sauce for dressing. My drink was on the house! Thanks to the owner who was the one serving. Ain't that sweet?

Why do I like Subway? Aside from the sandwiches, it reminds me of the time when a friend (Hello Teens!) and I shared a foot-long veggie delight, not for health reasons but because we were saving on our food allowance. Veggie delight is the most affordable of all Subs and ordering a foot-long is cheaper than ordeing 2 separate 6-inch sandwiches. This was many years ago. On second thought, what's fun about tightening the food budget? Personally, surviving it is a victory and I should add that the company of Teens during that period put some fun in the challenge.

Although I'm not promising anything, I can almost guarantee that I'll be eating at Subway a few more times. I have yet to try the parmesan oregano bread. In the meantime, I can think over what to have in it. Maybe roastbeef. That was a quickie. Maybe I'll change my mind (I'm quick in this too). I hope I don't get tired of Subway like a number of places I used to go to because I'm running out of food places to go to.

Oh, Subway has macadamia cookies and I'm just nuts about macadamia. If I decide to get a Subway meal (Sub + 15 bucks) I get a drink and chips or a cookie. And when I do, I'll most certainly choose the macadamia.

Personally I think it's okay to have more than one kind of meat in a sandwich.

If you're an avid reader of the food blog Midtown Lunch, you would've known that AQ Kafe has given out sandwiches for free today. I wouldn't mind schlepping crosstown for a free lunch.

It's not a secret...

Arriving there around 11:25, there was a line out the door but it moves quite briskly (about seven minutes from standing on line 'til receiving my sandwich.) There's a sign at the registers listing the free sandwiches: Black Forest Ham, Roast Beef, Vine-ripened tomato, and Wild Tuna Salad.

Black Forest Ham Sandwich

I opted for the ham just because it's supposedly filled with red cabbage, apple, sauerkraut, herb mustard, and it's encased with onion rye bread. When I actually bite into it, it's missing apples and it's on the smallish side. But I'm not complaining for something that tastes good and it's free. Normally, this baby would cost me $8.95 (about $9.70, including tax), which I wouldn't pay for unless I know it's earth shatteringly awesome. At least I know... Probably I'll drop in another day for their pastries and cakes, which did look enticing.

lunch: seven-eleven junk. i was in such a rush, so i only got to eat one onigiri (rice ball) and these little sandwiches.
dinner: another onigiri (not pictured) and veggie sticks. both leftover from lunch. i also had some chikuwa (fish sausages, not pictured).

I had the checkup appointment with my gynecologist (who is such a passive-aggressive kind of bitch. I hate her more every time I go see her.) this morning. Since I was at the general hospital anyway, I thought I might as well stop by the otolaryngology department there to ask for a second opinion about my screwy ears, which turned out to be one of the best choices I've made in a while. They tested my hearing as well as eardrums and eustachian tubes, which all came out more or less normal. My ears are fine!?! I can't begin to tell you how fucking relieved I am. I mean, they are still all weird, my ears. But I just have to teach myself to go on with my life without worrying too much about them. So anyway, whoever is reading this, please please take care of your ears because they can make you go absolutely crazy. Basically, no loud music or loud noise, and no stress. Catching a cold is also bad. When things such as your hearing or any of your sensory functions that you take for granted go wrong, it totally throws you off in all sorts of directions. And you certainly don't want that to happen, though sometimes it's just out of your hands, isn't it?

So I had a beer tonight at the G. Love & the Special Sauce gig. Man, that felt good! And we hugged after the show, and that felt good, too. Japan, we need to incorporate hugging in our culture! Now, that wouldn't hurt, would it?

You know I'm watching The L Word now. But I need to sleep as tomorrow is a working Saturday...

On nights when I am way too tired for anything that might take more than two minutes to fix, my tummy relies on a fried egg sandwich. It's my mother's fault really she started me on the grilled cheese. The famous grilled cheese, my husband is really good at making these. My mom used to make these famous grilled cheeses for me too, did you know you get addicted to cheese? You do. I heard it on Ellen. A doctor said it so I know it's true something about opiates. It has opiates or you have opiates that get released. I don't remember, but you get addicted. Anywho, I am addicted to cheese and egg sandwiches.

Last night, I fell asleep right after work. Crashed out. Oops. For 2 hours. Woke up long enough to watch Ugly Betty and Grey's and make my fried egg sandwich.

I use 2 eggs, I'm not sure if that is healthy, but it fills the bread better than just 1 egg. Crack the eggs into the pan, like you would if you were cooking them sunny side up, but then break the yellow part. So, it's fried eggs. Then add 2 pieces of buttered bread, with a slice or two of cheese. Then you grill the sandwich like a regular grilled cheese with the egg in the middle, until the cheese has melted around the egg and the bread is done. It's so good, and it's so fast I didn't miss a minute of Ugly Betty.

"I need your advice," I say to the guy behind the counter at Jo's on Second Street. "Veggie burger or veggie sandwich?"

Without a second's hesitation, almost before I've finished talking, he says, "Veggie sandwich."

Ok. Let me pause here and say that I don't really like sandwiches. Most of them have too much bread and not enough filling. When I order a sandwich, I generally take off one of the pieces of bread to eat it. (And then if it's good bread, I eat the un-sandwiched piece by itself, so clearly this isn't for dieting reasons)

Back to Jo's. I take the guy's word, sub in whole wheat bread, and am good to go. I carry the sandwich around for an hour or so before I get a chance to eat it, but it's a "cold" sandwich anyway (that they still pressed in the griller thing), so no worries. I sit down at my desk, unwrap the sandwich, and take a bite.

AMAZING!

This effing sandwich knocked my teeth off. It was so damn good I stuffed almost the entire half in my mouth at once before realizing that if I did that, I wouldn't get to spend as much time with the sandwich. So I tried nibbles, though I was fairly ineffective at it, as I wanted more more more of this veggie sandwich.

The wheat bread had those little nubby berries in it and was toasty on the outside but squishy on the inside. It was slathered in bright green pesto sauce. Thinly-sliced grilled zucchini, yellow squash, and eggplant were piled high. And havarti cheese--havarti! I love you!--was smushed into the mix. I couldn't even take the top off, the ratio of filling to bread was so perfect. The pesto + havarti + grilled veggies were perfect. The whole thing was perfect.

Sigh. I'm so full. Talking about it has brought it back and made me full again.

Jo's on Second Street. You are my new friend. And thank you tall nameless counter guy, for recommending the veggie sandwich. You too are my new friend.

My eating schedule is all wacky from working so late, so this is what I've been eating if I get home & am starving. It's an onion-poppyseed bagel with Tofutti cream cheese, smoked Tofurky, sprouts & tomatoes. Pretty much heaven!

I also re-read a book that I haven't read in sooo long!

19.) A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'Engle

For some reason, it seemed super religious to me this time around, but wasn't gaggy. At least I wasn't as shocked as when I re-read Narnia! I was way too young to notice the Christian subtext the first time around, so I thought it was such an awesome book that appreciated animals' intelligence & agency. Um, no.

I think we can all agree that recycling is a good thing. With that in mind, many of us make a strong effort to do so with aluminum cans and paper and plastics. What better way is there for this blog to show its support of recycling than by reusing older blog entries from the past 3 years that some of you might have missed the first time around? Without further ado, welcome to our semi-regular feature: Throwback Thursday.

So, here it is, a bit of balladry from my hand for your enjoyment and maybe, just maybe, my words will inspire you to greatness. Without further ado…..

Ode to the Bologna Sandwich I Made For Lunch Today

What will I have for lunch?
Leftovers? Macaroni?
Aha! There it is!
A sandwich of bologna

This small circle of meat
A delicacy most divine
Though it comes from the
Unmentionable parts of swine

But not just pieces of pig
That a dog wouldn’t eat
Add some chicken scraps
And beef for this treat

Tho’ it’s origin may not
Evoke a pleasant yearning
With it’s peculiar odor
My gut starts a-churning

With these facts in order
There’s not much more to say
I think I’ll go out
For my lunchtime today

I stood outside the cafe eating a banana and wondering what was keeping A. so long. Did they bury her in the instruction lab? Turned out the meeting went long, which I sure hope is a good sign. We ended up with matching sandwiches--didn't even plan it that way!--and sat and talked, she in her suit, me in the casual wear of the employee-with-a-union-contract. I could sit and talk with a fellow librarian until the end of time (taking a break to talk to someone in a different line of work about professional sports, of course) and it was just a delight to chat with A., comparing horror stories and happy stories and everything in between. I was due back in the library for a class and A. probably wanted to get out of that jacket, so we parted ways at the gate and I surged with hope that this might be the first lunch of many.

Misdeeds are legion in offices. Here's a workplace confession that I'm sure is just a beginning.

In my office, there is one fridge. Everyone who brings their lunch to work leaves their food there. A while ago I started checking out what kind of stuff people make for themselves. When the coast is clear, I open up the tupperware and inspect last night's leftovers. Sometimes I stick my nose into their brown bag and figure out what the sandwich filling is. I even help myself to samples, so overwhelming is it. Some days I start thinking about this on the way to work, which I know isn't right.

(Name withheld by request.)

***

Dear Foody Snooper

Think not that you are on your own with your surreptitious snack frolics. At some point in their working lives, everyone finds themselves with the desire to use the lunch room fridge as their own personal smorgasbord, especially when the 4:00 pm slump hits. It occurs to us that a forkful of stolen leftover lasagne at the right time can rival anything Gordon Effing Ramsay can pump out.

Notwithstanding, condoning this activity with such potential for office destabilization (Jessica, did you take a bite of my brie and cress on wheat sandwich? Did you? DID YOU????) won't happen here. For your penance, we prescribe a month of cleaning that object of your desire, the fridge. Every second day for the next thirty, you must tidy, clean and organize that fridge to everyone's satisfaction, and not so much as sniff Bob's Asian chicken salad.

As we all know, no-one ever thinks to do this. Most office fridges are petri dishes for exotic microfauna. Facing all the rotting remains from weeks ago, all those years-old yogurts and moldy oranges will act as aversion therapy, and should go some way to ameliorating your transgressions.

Have a yummy day!

I found some leftover broccoli in the fridge and decided it would be a nice little addition. Has anyone ever dipped broccoli in guacamole? It's pretty great.

Got my haircut, which went well. I haven't talked much about this, but I did lose a significant amount of hair due to my low weight over the past year, and it's finally thickening up again. My stylist was proud :)

After therapy, I came home feeling a little better, but also I left with a lot to think about. First, my weight is back up, which I KNOW is a good thing, but it can be scary at times to think that I've once again reached my maintenance point. I am determined to keep it here this time, I want my health to remain stable, and I know that's not possible if my weight continues to fluctuate. I ate dinner with my mom, and we talked more about my weekend plans. My mom is against me going to my friends b-day mainly because she does worry about that environment affecting me, and also because she doesn't want me to hurt my new relationship. But she really tends to express her opinion too forcefully, and I eventually came back to school pretty confused. I was exhausted after yesterday and went to bed at a nice 9:40pm.

I also had a mini Chocolate Brownie Clif bar before bed. I think all three flavors might be tied right now, more testing is needed to determine results ;)

I awoke this morning to a new little twist on breakfast:

Kashi oatmeal, made with almond butter this morning, instead of my usual peanut butter. I was afraid that I'd miss my peanut butter too much and be disappointed, but the almond butter was truly a nice little addition to the Kashi vanilla-flavored oatmeal packet. Good stuff.

I ended up just telling the boy that my friend was celebrating her birthday instead of telling him that I had decided one way or the other. He of course responded by telling me there was no reason to miss my friends birthday for his game, and that there were others. I still feel bad, and I'm not exactly sure what his feelings are. I just know that whether or not I have a great time with my friends, skipping out on her birthday this weekend would leave me feeling guilty. I just hope I haven't done damage to the new relationship. We have plans tomorrow night, so hopefully I can talk to him more then.

I hope everyone's Thursday has been less complicated than mine so far, I'll be back later with a "Thoughtful" post! ;)
