Dave Reske (NowSpeed Inc.) & Jennifer Brady (uMass)

Dave Reske (NowSpeed Inc.) & Jennifer Brady (uMass)

76% of advertisers use organic SEO and 71% use ppc advertising

85% of all internet sessions involve a search engine

Why is SEO/SEM vitally important to higher ed marketing?

Cost to generate one lead is averating $55 CPL in our industry (some paying $100 CPL)

This means to generate an average of 2,000 leads per month, it would cost $11,000 per month - or $1.3 million and up annually

Search provides opportunity to engage with the prospective student from point of first interest aka "the search" (rather than waiting until they get in touch later in the funnel)

Organic SEO

The actual search results (rather than sponsored top or right bar)

Google has 50.8% of market share; yahoo has 24%, MSN 8.4%, AOL 6.1%, Ask 2.1%

Goals: increase search engine rank on selected keywords; increase overall traffic to the site.

Spiders index everything (not pictures

Listings appear beneath paid results, ranking cannot be controlled

Free

natural ranking is based on the quality and quantity of relevant site data indexed and the number of quality inbound links to the site

Results displayed based on a match between the search terms used

SEO Steps to Good Rankings

Keywords: High traffic, low competition, good fit for business

i.e. don't rely on Catholic if you are a Catholic college - too much competition

Content: must be relevant to search term and contain quality information

Page Elements: body copy, title tag, meta keywords, meta Description, Alt Tag - make these all what search engines want to see

Link popularity: directory submissions, press releases, blogging, article submissions

Make it easy to crawl: clean HTML, no "black hat" techniques (can get you blacklisted)

Keyword Strategy:

Start with a wide universe of keywords

Select keywords with the right combination of low competition and high traffic

select keywords that are relevant to your site and to your business

Broke site into sections (i.e. title tag) and made sure keywords were mentioned within each section

Embed keywords in outgoing content - press releases etc. You get a link, and keywords!

measure by visibility score and organic search traffic

KPIs

Visibility Score, Traffic, Link popularity

Visibility of keywords by search engine

You can get a lot of this data from google adwords reporting - can see exactly which keywords are getting clicks etc - mmbc

Paid Search

At the top/side

Google has 74% market share of paid search marketing. Yahoo! 19%, MSN 6%

Placement: Determined by CTR and how much you bid - you can't just bid your way to the top

Cost: bidding for a spot, bid for position against others buying the same terms; you pay $0.01 more than the next highest bid

Some thoughts on AdWords: find a lot of keywords have a required minimum bid unlike facebook. These are crazy high - $8, $12 - but you end up paying much less. Have to raise the bid to the high amount or Google simply won't activate your keyword - mmbc

Google

Search Network & Content Network (1000's of extra websites were Google places ads - if your search word appears in the text of that website or gmail message than your ad will be displayed, can target by site, time of day, geography, age)

You control the budget, demographics, keywords - everthing

Adgroup - groups of keywords (100's of 1000's keywords at no cost)

Paid Search campaigns

Build comprehensive keyword list

Create Adword groups for similar words

Select offers

Best landing page practices

Clear headline and compelling copy

picture of the offer

minimal navigation

appealing image

Example:

Made a very specific, page - took CPL from $300 to $40.

Then did custom pages for each degree and certificate program - took CPL to $22.74

battery is dead!

Search engine success starts with SEO copywriting. It’s the most cost-effective marketing to

Search engine success starts with SEO copywriting. It's the most cost-effective marketing tool around. You'll see a clear and rapid return on your investment in the shape of higher search engine rankings and more website traffic.

For REAL immediacy, of course, there's Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising. Whether this counts as SEO copywriting is a moot point, although PPC does rely heavily for its success on good keyword selection that relates to tightly configured AdGroups, well-optimised landing pages and keyword-focused small ads.

It hardly matters, but PPC is firmly rooted in the search engine marketing (SEM) stable. For purists who see SEO copywriting solely as a way to achieve higher website rankings, we have to be talking about optimised website copy, complete with appropriate keywords, meta tags and smooth, semantic syntax!

Other link-building tools which also draw on SEO copywriting skills include online PR and article marketing although, in this context, their SEO uses are focused on improving a website's search engine rankings.

For businesses looking to generate sales and qualified leads in the most straightforward and cost-effective way, SEO copywriting and the improvements it can make in organic search engine ranking make it an essential secret weapon in any marketer's armoury.

A bit of debate going on between SEO compatriots. Just how much of a difference do certain inbound links make to a search engine ranking? Well it depends on a variety of factors, but there is some debate on whether (in the UK) a .ac.uk domain is "worth more to Google" than say your average .com or .co.uk.

.com and .co.uk addresses can be bought for a few dollars, whilst an educational or governmental domain cannot be just bought from your average registrar. As a result, search engines like Google place great merit on a link that comes out from such a domain. As a result (and opinions vary), an outbound link from an educational domain may well produce a higher ranking (by a factor of 10 according to some estimates) than that coming from a regular .com style domain. This is because a link from such a site is considered reputable and to have some significant credibility. Suddenly having a bit of real estate on a .ac.uk domain becomes an interesting proposition.

What does this mean for Blackhatters? Well - I can see an increased amount of persuasion by SEO specialists of .ac.uk domain participants to somehow link back to their own domains. As the participant in a number of .ac.uk domains (with the right to create content on public space on University web sites), I can imagine that subtle pressure will be applied to get me to endorse commercial propositions through linking. The same will apply to civil servants (some of whom earn the minimum wage), medical staff and other publicly funded employees with access to public web space.

I can see what people are trying to achieve, but there are significant numbers of people with access to space who do not realise the consequences of this. And when it starts to affects rankings between competitors, I imagine that a lot of whistle-blowing will occur. Someone fairly innocent is going to get a kicking.

The use of forms from SEM imaging is prolific in today’s architectural schools and in cutting edge built structures. Dr Swanson’s seminar on his work using SEM and taxonomy emphasizes to me that these images are not just pretty forms to be copied into large scale architectural structures. Through taxonomy; the capturing, identifying and study of microscopic forms enlightens us of a whole new world. With only 2/3 of all species categorized, our knowledge of what is possible can still grow. This is not to find forms not yet conceived, but to understand how these forms work: the movement of a spider’s knee, the cutting barbs of a sand fly, the formation of a spider’s web. The now possible three dimensional images with the understanding of why these shapes exist, can lead to meaningful architecture.

Promowanie strony na jakąkolwiek frazę ogólną prowadzi do poprawy pozycji strony w wynikach wyszukiwania wszystkich fraz "pochodnych" (zawierających to słowo ogólne).

Pozycjonowanie stron www regionalnie

Just passed 10,000 views this month (with more than 11 days to go)...

I would have never imagined close to 10,000 people a month would visit this blog. The keys: a bit of controversy stirred up by a little unfortunate event that happened a couple weeks ago, posts about Korean women & Korean music videos, a few posts about some handy Korean language phrases & an image about a dog that was attacked by a porcupine. Oh, and maybe the other 450+ posts over the past 18 months.

With recent averages and about 11+ days to go, I'm thinking I'll be surpassing the 15,000 mark by the end of the month. That almost eclipses the previous high of close to 8500 views when a few posts about Facebook hoaxes took this blog to reaches unknown in the winter of last year.

It's been an interesting online ride thus far...

So I think I’ve made enough references to the fact that I work in the search engine marketing

So I think I've made enough references to the fact that I work in the search engine marketing space at Microsoft, but I thought I'd put a little clarity around what that means.

In a nutshell, I help agencies set up, manage and maintain their pay-per-click campaigns on adCenter, the platform Microsoft built a couple of years ago in answer to Google's Adwords and Yahoo's Overture. Not familiar with either of those? I'll try to summarize.

When you go to a search engine like Live.com and enter in some keywords, your search results page will display two types of listings: organic and pay-per-click, or "sponsored" listings. The organic ones are the larger ones to the left -- these are the results that the search engine's algorithm brought back based on the relevance of the page to the keywords searched on. The pay-per-click listings are the smaller ones off to the right, they also appear based on relevance to the keywords searched on, but these are paid for by advertisers who bid on keywords relevant to the products/services they're trying to promote. Much like Ebay, the top bidder gets the higher positioning.

On the back end of getting those paid ads to appear is a web-based platform where advertisers create their campaigns, ad groups, ads and keywords. AdCenter is that platform for Microsoft. You can learn more about adCenter by visiting the adCenter Community site.

I'm going to refrain from delving much deeper than this on any SEM topics as whatever I could say has most likely already been covered a thousand times over on innumerable sites dedicated to search engine marketing. In addition, anything that I write that's going to be worth posting will be going up on the adCenter Community site.

Just kidding about the ‘greatest debate ever’ part of the title, by the way, but it

Just kidding about the 'greatest debate ever' part of the title, by the way, but it's an interesting one. Before I get started here I want to offer this disclaimer: *I'm NOT a search marketing expert and fall much closer to 'idiot' in the knowledge spectrum of SEO than 'guru'...but I think I'm clearly in the majority here*

I understand the stated pros and cons of both paid and organic search strategies, but am really struggling to say that paid search is a "necessary" option and that marketing budget, or at least that much of it, should be dedicated to paid search and not reallocated to other programs. *I will note now that I'm speaking specifically about the use of paid search around Quest's products of the SQL Server BU.*

Here's why:
1. Quest has been in business with a web presence for about twenty years - so what? Well, the point here is that we have a web site that has been a destination for hundreds of thousands of visitors (customers and prospects) so that simple traffic shouldn't be a concern in terms of contributing to our search ranking
2. We have a pretty large telesales team that is constantly driving traffic to our site - everyday
3. Our customer marketing team helps promote activities that we're doing by using email marketing tactics (they blast customers and prospects who can forward on the ecards that are used to promote specific activities)
4. We have a dedicated web team that is in the process of redesigning our website and shaping content and usability to be optimal for visitors to the site and its pages
5. This one actually builds on number two, but again, our internal web resources are able to ensure proper use of keywords, meta-tags, title tags, and meta-descriptions which are good ways to improve SEO

So, as you can see here by these five examples, we have ALOT of people performing tasks that at the end of the day are helping push the popularity of our website UP and are not part of a paid search strategy. I understand that a truely smart search strategy will blend organic and paid elements, which is probably great for a small business or business that is relatively 'young' in their web presence. BUT, I don't know that for our BU that paid search is an area where a large investment should be made - especially if we can use that budget to do more varied activities for raising awareness and lead generation.

The head scratching continues....

I decided to try my hand at interviewing…(let me know what you think). A friend of mine recently went into business for herself and her most recent project is working for a non-profit here in the Bay Area. I recently met with Elizabeth May, of eMay Services, to learn a bit more about non profits and online marketing.

NorCal SEM: Hi Liz, thanks for taking the time to speak with me.

Elizabeth: Thanks Clay for speaking with me.

NorCal SEM: I remember a year or so ago you told me you wanted to work for yourself, and last time we spoke things were picking up for you.

Elizabeth: Yes, a year ago at this time, I signed on my first independent contractor position with a start up called www.eldr.com. It was so enriching to use my background in online marketing to really help a new company get some traffic and measure their results. In fact, I kept talking about the online marketing visions I had for consumers and companies, and as a result, people in my network consistently referred more business my way. Clearly it was my passion for matching online consumers to what they were looking for through keyword centric paid traffic that allowed others to identify me in the industry as a good resource for search engine marketing in particular and online marketing in general. Eventually, after taking on a few more clients I had enough business to quit my full time job and work officially as a self-employed person. Working for myself has been truly rewarded and equally challenging.

NorCal SEM: I understand you're currently working with a local non-profit; who are they?

Elizabeth: The local non-profit I'm working for and that I am chairing is the Marin Wine Auction hosted by Keiretsu Forum Charitable Foundation, the charitable arm of Keiretsu Forum, the largest angel investor network. Keiretsu Forum focuses on bringing angel investors together to invest in early stage companies in the high tech and consumer goods industries. I love that one of the four tenants of membership is PHILANTHROPY! In the past, the major annual philanthropic event has been a golf auction, and this year, to celebrate the launch of Keiretsu Forum's North Bay chapter, we decided to showcase the Marin wine industry, who will be pouring together for the first time ever at our event, and help some wonderful North Bay 501 (c) 3 organizations. Complete list of beneficiaries and participating wineries at our website.

NorCal SEM: That sounds really fun, but also like a lot of work. How have you incorporated SEM into your marketing efforts for the auction, or I guess, more importantly, what is your overall online marketing strategy for raising awareness for this event?

Elizabeth: It is a lot of fun! The event will raise about $250,000 for local charities which makes me feel really good...so...I'm plugging for everyone who can to buy tickets to do so and make the Marin Wine Auction part of your 2008 giving plans...ok, no more shameless plugging. SEM for non-profits is difficult, but easier than for profit companies. There are plenty of companies that are willing to help.

Nonprofit organizations and events can benefit from using savings discounts on the following helpful sites:

My marketing strategy for Marin Wine Auction was to build the site, include all of our information, include my contact information, make site navigation simple, and post our news. I like to write interested news and blogs in the local & wine communities to see who will write an article about our event or better yet, post our event flyer. A few best practices:

Get to the Point: Polite, brief, and informative communication is key to win links to your site.

Start a database: Keep good records to track how many people you've asked, and how many people have accepted to link to you or write an article about your site or event. This database will assist you with all future communications (creating your own PR listserv effectively), but it will also help you track conversion ratios.

Make data-driven decisions: Use this conversion ratio to test different language in Press Releases or conversations in emails to improve your results.

This experience has taught me that there are countless online marketing resources available to nonprofits. There is the opportunity to create strong partnerships between nonprofits and online marketers. What is great about online marketing is its transparency of results. Tracking results means that performance and efficiency can improve for profit in the case of regular businesses, for increased funds in the case of nonprofit businesses.

Elizabeth: I wish I could say that I am a pioneer in the "online marketing for nonprofits" space, but the idea is neither new nor unique. One of the best sites on the internet for nonprofits is Common Grants. Common Grants seeks to use the "common application for college admissions" process and apply it to simplify the grant application process for nonprofits. Effectively setting up nonprofits to find, win, and increase funding and eliminate the painstaking time and energy that goes into each new grant application.

SEO or search engine optimisation, as it is also known, is performed by industry experts that will try to achieve top ten listings on the major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN.

To stand a chance of succeeding you need an SEO expert or SEO company that can implement a strategy that will deliver targeted leads and enquiries to increase sales and revenue.

Where competition is high, you will not succeed unless you choose an SEO specialist that has proven success in search engine marketing services.

Depending on your location, Google can provide around 80% of the internet's search requests, so it is vital to find a consultant or company that can get you top rankings for your chosen keywords or keyphrases. Do not be afraid to ask for previous experience and proof of current rankings to determine the level of expertise.

One of the key elements for a rock solid internet marketing plan is good quality content focused on your business and it's industry. Literally the more quality and unique content there is on your site, the better off your site will be, in terms of rankings.

Another major factor for your marketing plan is the coding and search engine optimisation of your site. Whether you have an html, dynamic or a flash-based website, there are important steps that your SEO expert should take to ensure your site is search engine ready.

Flash animation web design may look good but are notoriously poor for top ten search engine rankings, thankfully there are steps you can take to still get your site listed and ranked on the major search engines. The same applies to dynamic web sites that are written in programming languages such as PHP, ASP and .NET.

Once your site is search engine optimised, your internet marketing strategy will can commence and you can then start to work on one of the other more important factors that search engines look for, which is the trust factor of your site. This can be achieved by partnering with other web sites that are regarded as trusted and have a good rank on the search engines already. This will give you that all-important page rank that will start to increase your website's listings in the search engines.

After performing all of these steps, your internet marketing agency or SEO consultants will have your site well under way to achieving a top ten search engine ranking and you can sit back and watch your website receive targeted enquiries, leading to increased turnover and ultimately increased profits.

Going organic can benefit more than your health. A sweeping trend in the SEO/SEM world is organic search engine optimization. As new marketers, communicators and new media folks emerge so too has the realization that SEO/SEM can be a low cost solution to getting your brand recognized. SEO/SEM organizations charge thousands for what could be manipulated for free. Here's how.

The key to optimizing your searchability is through linking. Search engines like Google and Yahoo send out "crawlers" that screen the internet for related subject material. Think of your page as a building; the more roads leading to your location the easier it is for people to access it. One of the easiest ways to link to other pages and get recognized is through blogging. By consistenly posting on blogs you are not only carving multiple paths through cyberspace, you're also developing a name for yourself in the blogosphere. Make people want to reference you as an authority and deepen the significance of your links.

Ever heard the term "consistency is key" (?). No where is this more true than in branding. And when it's search engine optimization you're after, it's all about delivering a consistently branded message. If you're taking advantage of the blogosphere, make sure your messages match and so too do your screen names and personal information. The goal is to build as many paths to your page without too many forks in the road.

Next to linking, the second most important factor in organic SEO is tagging. Tags are the code through which search engines and web pages communicate. By manipulating the meta tags to incorporate keywords that reflect your brand, you can boost your searchability. A few important things to keep in mind:

1. You can't include every key word on the planet. Search engine's are intelligent enough to label these type of meta tags as spam.

2. Your web content must be reflective of these keywords. This is where great writing comes into play. Make sure all copy (particularly the home page copy) contains the key words embedded within it. Note: This is also true for optimizing a press release. Include keywords in the first few sentences of the release.

Try these sneaky tactics and squeeze your brand into the limelight for less.
