Holy crap. I grew up on Terry Gilliam films. This is nothing short of win to me!

Pe 5 octombrie `69 se transmite pe BBC primul episod din Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Dupa 4 sezoane ale serialului de comedie, cei de la Monty Python (doi absolventi de Oxgord, doi de Cambridge si un american) mai fac 4 filme (And Now For Something Completely Different, The Holy Grail, Life of Brian si The Meaning of Life).

Americanul trupei, Terry Gilliam, care in `68 obtine cetatenie britanica, renunta in 2006 la cetatenia americana in semn de protest fata de George W. Bush. A facut initial animatii, apoi a jucat in roluri marunte, a scris si regizat pentru Monty Python. Mai tarziu, Gilliam face cateva filme de vazut (Brazil, The Fisher King, Twelve Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas si Tideland).

Fear and Loathing e povestea ziaristului hipiot Hunter S. Thompson, care dupa ce l-a vazut pe Johnny Depp, a hotarat ca doar el il poate juca. In plus, l-a ras in cap si i-a imprumutat hainele lui din anii `70. Filmul e despre o calatorie prin America, o decapotabila, droguri, mai multe droguri si un oras cu lumini.

Pe coloana sonora apare un cover dupa Viva Las Vegas, melodia lui Elvis. Aceeasi melodie e si pe soundtrack`ul de la The Big Lebowski, cu Jeff Bridges in rolul principal. El joaca si in Tideland`ul aceluiasi Terry Gilliam.

Som om man inte skulle ha något att frukta om man inte är en terrorist.

Så då är det bara skyldiga personer som sitter i häkte, som blir utvisade, som får sina tillgångar frysta, som sitter på Guantanamo, som torteras..?

Skulle inte tro det.

Och ja - detta är inget unikt för USA och deras utrikes- och försvarspolitik. Både vår förra och vår nuvarande regering samt vårt eget försvar har paranoida dårar anställda som tror att bröllop betyder terrorverksamhet. Bland annat...

Åsiktsregistrering har lett till att folk nekats arbete och fått sina tillgångar frysta eller blivit utvisade - utan förklaring - även här i Sverige.

Och hur försvarar man sig mot det?

En av de personer som fått sina tillgångar frysta - svensk-somaliern Ahmed Yusuf:

Regeringen i Washington presenterade inte några konkreta anklagelser eller bevis mot al-Barakaat och dess medarbetare. Den behövde inte göra det.

Lagstiftningen i USA tillåter presidenten att preventivt och utan rättslig prövning tillgripa ekonomiska sanktioner mot organisationer och enskilda som anses utgöra hot mot den nationella säkerheten.

Bevis skulle komma i efterhand, hette det.

Det kom inga bevis.

Tvärtom.

FBI kunde efter en av sina mest omfattande undersökningar någonsin konstatera att det inte fanns några belägg för att al-Barakaat skulle ha understött al-Qaida eller andra terrorister.

Ahmed Yusuf avfördes utan skäl från listan i augusti 2006. SR:

Efter knappt ett år avfördes två av männen från listan. Men den tredje, Ahmed Yusuf, har stått kvar ända tills nu, i snart fem år.

Men nu har hans advokat fått ett fax från de amerikanska myndigheterna där det står att Ahmed Yusuf inte längre finns med på listan, men någon motivering finns inte med

– Vi har ju inte fått någon motivering till varför han hamnade på listan, så vi hade kanske inte förväntat oss någon motivering till varför han avfördes.

En av de två egyptier som på ett förnederande sätt utvisades från Sverige på - som det skulle visa sig - ytterst tvivelaktiga grunder - har kompenserats. Mohammad Alzery fick tre miljoner i skadestånd av Sverige. Men om svenskarna inte hade varit så lyhörda inför USA:s nycker så hade det aldrig hänt.

Ahmed Agiza har nyligen fått samma summa. Eller "fått" - han sitter fängslad i Egypten - dömd till 15 års fängelse. Straffet har redan sänkts med tio år. Ursprungligen skulle han fått 25 år. Han uppger att han torteras i fängelse. En uppgift som det finns anledning att sätta tillit till. Fängelserna är hårda i Egypten och regimkritiker behandlas mycket hårt.

Något som den egyptiska läkaren och författaren, tillika regimkritikern Nawal El Saadawi också berättat om.

Fångtransport på Guantánamo

Lyssna också på programmet om de sju uiguriska män som suttit oskyldigt fängslade på Guantánamo.

På Guantanamobasen på Kuba finns i dag drygt 400 fångar. Omkring 100 av dem betraktas inte längre som farliga eller som NLEC, no longer enemy comabatant. Många av dem har överhuvudtaget aldrig varit krigare. De är oskyldiga män som kom i kläm under kriget i Afganistan 2001.

Rätt läskigt att man hittar USA och dess underrättelsetjänsts inblandning i så mycket världen över. Verkligheten är ju värre än mina värsta fantasier.

Min morfar - som bland annat arbetade som fotograf på det svenska försvaret - och hade hand om ytterst hemliga kartor - fick en gång kopiera militärens hemliga negativ - i sällskap av två vakter som skulle kontrollera att han inte kopierade något för egen räkning.

Han kände sig kränkt och hämnades. Morfars överordnade fick sin beställning och negativet. Men i morfars lab på försvaret satt ytterligare en kopia av det hemliga negativet uppsatt på väggen över dörren. Bilden var försedd med en text:

Detta är en kopia av ett negativ som kopierats i endast ett exemplar - varav detta är nummer två.

Morfar menade att om man inte litar på sina medarbetare så ska man inte ha dem anställda. För det spelar ingen roll hur hårt de kontrolleras - vill man fuska eller stjäla hemliga uppgifter - så går det bra - även med två kontrollanter i labbet.

Och det stämmer ju in på samhället i övrigt. Lita på medborgarna - övervakning går alltid att fuska sig bort från - om man är riktigt skicklig - och har något att dölja. Och de som inte har något att dölja behöver inte övervakas.

FRA-kramarna säger: Den som inget har att dölja behöver heller inte frukta övervakning.

Nej - men den som inget har att dölja vill inte bli övervakad. Bara för att man inte fruktar övervakningen så behöver det inte betyda att man gillar den.

Eller vill de gärna ha övervakningskameror i hemmet, på toa och i sovrummet också?

Är man trogen sin partner, slår aldrig sina barn och låter bli att ägna sig åt hembränning - så kan man ju lika gärna ha kameror i hemmet. För man har väl inget att frukta - som laglydig medborgare..?

Idag tillkännagav Disney tre projekt de har planerade med Johnny Depp. Han ska reprisera sin roll som kapten Jack Sparrow i Pirates of the Caribbean 4 (Har Depp sett den tredje?!), även spela Tonto i The Lone Ranger och sist och därmed inte minst, en karaktär som Depp är född att spela, The Mad Hatter i Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland med beräknad biopremiär 5 Mars 2010. Jag tror vi alla har samma fråga på tungan. Hur fan har han tänkt hinna med The Man Who Killed Don Quixote? Pålitliga rykten sa att de skulle göra ett nytt försök med Terry Gilliams drömprojekt (hur det gick första gången kan - och bör - du se i Lost in La Mancha) efter Gilliam regisserat Brothers Grimm och Depp gjort sina piratfilmer. Nu några år senare är hoppet nästan ute för The Man Who Killed Don Quixote och jag vill personligen bara se Gilliam regissera Depp igen. Tacka vet jag Depps kommande framträdande i The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus om även bara i ett par scener. Och ärligt talat, Alice i underlandet i regi av Tim Burton som tröstpris? Booya, I think I just came.

Yes, I'm a nerd, but, seriously! Twitchfilm.net has posted behind-the-scenes footage for Terry Gilliam's Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, a.k.a. the film Heath Ledger was making when he died. I'm totally excited about this movie, especially to see this character, named Tony, that Ledger - and later Jude Law, Johnny Depp, and Colin Farrell - played. It all sounds very mystical and strange and Fisher King-like. Gilliam's notorious bad luck always makes for interesting backstory to his projects (Lost in La Mancha was so good and so instructive on the hazards of working in Hollywood).

I am wearing, for your pleasure, my Masaki Sakai Monkey Magic T-shirt. The classic Chinese legend-novel Monkey's Journey to the West given a Japanese roller-disco makeover in the late '70s, then dubbed into English and broadcast at confused kids. Marked me for life.

Insomnia watch, day 5! Got up feeling slightly rough, then realised it was because I'd slept. Probably for about an hour, hence my disorientation. I won't make that mistake again. Took a shower, and my room-mate Mehar, in the next cubicle, suggested that there was no hot water. I ascertained that hot water could be summoned by turning the dial to the right, and said, "You have to turn the dial to the LEFT." He thanked me, but was probably freezing his nuts off. In my defence, I must say that binary choices lke Left and Right are much too tricky when you're in a state of advanced sleep deprivation. Why did Mother Nature give us two sides?

Last time I was here, after a week of no sleep, I heard a kid on a bus and thought to myself, "Hey, what a clever kid. He can speak Italian."

I probably have a headache but the part of my brain that would process it is no longer working.

Been catching bits of the brilliant TV show The Last Machine, exploring the Victorian roots of cinema, and presented by Terry Gilliam. The whole show seem to take place in a wondrous clockwork toy theatre, with the only glimpses of external reality being provided by the excerpts of Lumiere, Feulliade etc. Quite good to watch in a semi-conscious state... but even better if you're alert.

Terry Gilliam's MIRACLE OF FLIGHT is an early animation of his, pre-Python, in which his cut-out figures plunge to early deaths smothered in feathers or wielding cardboard wings. A little predictable at first, although the proportion of hand-drawn figures to art book cut-outs is slightly higher than usual. Then we get a gag recreated later in live action on Monty Python's Flying Circus: a goggled aviator, majestically sailing through the air with his strap-on eagle wings, a rocky horizon scudding beneath him, until he's abruptly flattened against a vast wall. Rotate 90° to reveal that the horizon was a sheer cliff face and the wall he's hit is the ground.

Then a parable in which a king gathers together the finest scientists and philosophers in his land to solve the problem. His approach is to kick each of them off a mountain, on the assumption that one of them will be clever enough to invent flight on the way down.

Then Gilliam quickly shows us the invention of in-flight movies, stewardesses, airline tickets, and airport terminals. A representative passenger goes through baggage check-in and passport control, gradually approaching the gate, is instructed to board...

...and is kicked off the mountain.

Ah sim, tem o lance de ser o último filme que o Heath Ledger fez e tal. Ele morreu no meio das filmagens e o seu personagem é 'substituído' por Johnny Depp, Jude Law e Colin Farrell (o que parece que faz sentido na história). Provavelmente vão encher o saco com esse assunto na época que o filme for lançado.

Aliás, como o Terry Gilliam é cagado de urubu de tanto azar em filmagens. Ele tentou filmar "The Man Who Killed Dom Quixote" mas todos os problemas possíveis aconteceram, desde tempestades destruindo sets de filmagem a cortes de orçamento. A equipe que filmava o 'making of' desse filme conseguiu gerar um documentário sobre a tragédia chamado 'Lost in la Mancha' que vale a pena baixar. Saca só:

A little behind the scenes look at Terry Gilliam's latest project 'The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus'*. From the look of some of the scenes and special effects, if your a fan of Terry Gilliam's past creations, such as 'Time Bandits', 'Bravil' and 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' you're not going to be disappointed.

Set in the present day the story centres around the character Dr. Parnassus (who has lived for a thousand years), his traveling imaginarium and a bet he's made with the Devil (Mr Nick).

This is the last Heath Ledger film, not "The Dark Knight". This was the film that Heath was still working on before his death. Remember that now.

Terry Gilliam is a great film maker.

While I only worked a short couple days on the actual project, I had been working along side them in studio from the get go here in Vancouver. Curious as I am, I snuck around their set. It probably didn't hurt that I knew a tonne of their crew, and anyways, I helped them out when I could. Tee Hee. I love mischief.

So, I will not give anything plot wise away. That is not what I am about; I don't want to disrespect the fine work of the director, actors, or crew. What I will say, is that the set pieces were absolutely beautiful and strange in their detail. The costumes were sumptuously gorgeous and strange in their features. There will end up being a tonne of greenscreen, and I can't wait to see just how Mr. Gilliam brings it all together.

Speaking of Mr. Gilliam, the man is a great director. They say that the director sets the tone of the set; be it anxious, mean, or in Gilliam's case, jovial. I think that's true. Anyways, there is no doubt that the man absolutely loves what he's doing. He sits behind the monitors in video village giggling away. He really does have a bit of a twinkle in his eyes. He's got such an amazing imagination, and apparently he knows how to work with his art department, wardrobe, camera people, etc to get the best out of everyone. I was awed to meet one of my heroes, and he was polite, down to earth, sweet, quirky, and funny.

I got to see a few other heroes as well, Tom Waits being the main one. I remember that I saw him, and ran to tell a fellow PA about it, only to get "Who?" in response (The same PA did the same thing in response to my seeing Terry Gilliam for the first time-sacrilegious!). The only people on SGA that seemed to care were my Grip brothers, and some of first team. Actually Mr. Waits and Mr. Gilliam were the only people I really cared about meeting (I'll admit Christopher Plumber was pretty neat to see too...edelweiss, edelweiss), though funny story; when I caught a 0.2 second glimpse of Johnny Depp one day, I got asked what he looked like, to which I could only reply "He looked like Johnny Depp."

I guess that you can't really mention this movie without mentioning the tragic death of Heath Ledger. I think that it is a shame that he died, but in a sense I think that his spirit would probably be happy that his last film is still on par with his other work. And when I say other work, I don't mean "A Knight's Tale" or "10 Things I Hate About You." He was incredibly talented, and the entire crew felt his loss (while most of the crew was from Vancouver, a lot were from the production in England, and had met and worked with Mr. Ledger).

I suppose I am at the end here; I don't really know what else to say about this movie, except that here is the teaser trailer. I know that there are more of his past films shown in it than "Imaginarium," but it's still a decent look into how the final product is styled. Enjoy, and please let me know what you think of it.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Gilliam is the most complete retrospective of Terry Gilliam's work ever assembled, here in Milan. They even have the excellent TV show The Last Machine, on the origins of cinema, which Gilliam presented.

In case of bumping into the reformed Python and BRAZIL auteur, I boned up by watching TIDELAND at last before I came out here. It was quite impressive, and made up for the rather sour taste left by the Weinstein-Gilliam "collaboration" THE BROTHERS GRIMM. I identified with TIDELAND's child heroine, since she has a collection of dolls' heads, like me. Here's mine:

Festival organiser Ben ushered me into The Presence of Greatness and I shook the mighty hand (Gilliam has a mighty head, shaped like a dodgem-car, and mighty gnarled and chunk hands. If Ernest Brgnine was a pair of hands, he would be these. "You were pointed out to me in your T-short and shorts," he said, "They said, 'He's from Scotland, he thinks this is NICE weather.' I do too!"

We discussed the Filmmakers' House, which I recommended he visit. A leaking art-deco meat market ("The film business!" he chortled) seems like a Gilliam kind of place. So maybe he'll show up to party later (he has more stamina in his 60s than I do at 40, it seems).

And in other news, they're showing my film in the park by the castle tonight at 10.45. The weather seems to have been improving slowly all day so I hope it's a sunny night.

The Castello Sforzesco is a castle populated by tourists, cats and pigeons. The cats aren't afraid of the tourists and the pigeons aren't afraid of the cats. Everyone lives side by side in peace and harmony like ebony and ivory on the piano keyboard, pausing occasionally to lick their privates or peck stuff off the ground. And that includes the cats and pigeons.

I passed some kind of Harley Davidson rally outside the castle. Many many bikes, plus fifty girls in halter-tops and hot pants. So many asses hanging out actually came to seem slightly gross, which surprised me. I pictured all those asses heaped together and wondered what they'd weigh.

Insomnia watch, Day 2! I think I may have actually slept last night, for ten minutes or so. Having failed with the sleeping pills, I tried tranquilisers. Not bad.

Terry Gilliam calls Italy "the sexy country" and it's true. Asides from the legions of Claudia Cardinales haunting the streets, there's a huge amount of public necking going on, plus ass-squeezing etc. Feel a little lonely.

I get into the meat market hostel at midnight, ahead of the other filmmakers, and rise at 9, ahead of the other filmmakers. I have only met one filmmaker. But hey, you can meet filmmakers anywhere. You can only meet film festival volunteers at a film festival.

The rain yesteday washed my sun-block off in streaks, then the blazing sun came out, so that I feared I might burn in vertical stripes, ironically just as scientists have published a study showing that such patterns are not, in fact, slimming. But I seem to be evenly brown -- either tanned or just dirty.

Had a nice chat with Amy Gilliam, Terry's daughter. It seems possible I may meet the man himself. Of course I'll fail to find anything to say. Had a business card printed up for Shadowplay so I gave one to A.G. Briefly discussed THE BROTHERS GRIMM and the excellent making-of book which the Weinstein Bros tried to suppress. Well worth reading, and if you found the film disappointing, as I admit I did, the book will make you altogether more sympathetic to Gilliam: it's a miracle the film that got made is at all watchable.

Terry Gilliam's films are very much like Marmite, you either love them, or you hate them! I have to say I fall somewhere in between if that's possible I love his visual style and feel he's a true auteur, unique to the extreme and whilst it makes his films always a pleasure to look at, it doesn't always make for a good film.

As most film fans should know, Gilliams latest film The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus was the late great Heath Ledger's final performance. Incompleted before his death, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law stepped in to complete the role. Not alot, other than this, has been revealed about the story or anything else regarding it's troubled production.

So it is with pleasure that I point you in the direction of this, whilst not a trailer as such it does give some insight as to Gilliam's vision and some plot developments.

Feast your eyes Gilliam-ites and lets see what you think...

I just had to stop everything I was doing and write something after salivating over the piece below, a "first look" at Gilliam's 2009 film (and Heath Ledger's last), 'The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus'. The teaser reminded me of what a brilliant and visionary mind Terry Gilliam has. Sure, he has gone super "loco" on us a couple of times, but when he strucks on gold, oh boy...he elevates himself to demi-God status. 'Brazil' and '12 Monkeys' prove this. It's sad that I still day-dream about his cursed 'Don Quijote' project, though.

So, what will you see here? Apart from a few ridiculously impressive selections of painted and moving concept artwork, you will watch and listen to the man himself declaring that this might be one of the best things he's worked on. I can't say I disagree with him on that statement. The story sounds unconventional enough and fueled by powerful imagination, and the troupe of actors and actresses is a dream, the likes of Johnny Depp and Jude Law included...all of which bodes well for the prospect of this film being a return to form for the legendary director.

La malédiction qui suit Gilliam depuis ses débuts en solo dans la grande industrie qu'est le cinéma ne s'est (toujours) pas estompée et comme vous pouvez vous en douter il a eu évidemment de (trés) gros problèmes sur le tournage avec la mort non programmée de Heath Ledger qui était en première ligne du film et qui n'avait pas encore fini toutes ses scénes.

Le tournage ayant dû être stoppé, tous les fans du maître ont cru à une nouvelle annulation comme ce qui était déjà arrivé à The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, mais heureusement Gilliam et son imagination complétement folle ont réussi à trouver une solution pour remplacer Ledger et ainsi terminer le film.

Le tour de passe-passe en question est d'avoir fait jouer le personnage de Ledger par 3 autres acteurs bien connus que sont Johnny Depp, Jude Law et Colin Farrel. En effet le personnage change d'apparence au fur et à mesure qu'il voyage à travers les dimensions. Mission accomplie.

Et voici donc un petit teaser/trailer/first look du film qui met vachement l'eau à la bouche ! Y a pas vraiment d'image mais une petite intro sur Gilliam et des dessins de production. Je suis complétement fan du production design. Un "vrai" trailer devrait suivre prochainement.

Terry Gilliam påminner oss om varför vi ser på film. Han utforskar och stimulerar fantasin. Ger oss vackra tillflyktsorter och gör oss till barn igen. Jag välkomnar The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus och Gilliams återvändo till sina tidigare filmer med hela mitt drömska hjärta.
